Katana's delicious, creative rolls are my current food obsession. My significant other and I visited this low-key Japanese spot in Midlothian on a recent Friday and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Upon being seated, we received some complimentary edamame and fried dumplings which were a tasty way to whet our appetites for the sushi feast to come. Our friendly, attentive waitress took our order card and the four rolls we chose arrived at our table in a timely manner. These "chef's special" rolls each cost $10-15 and the quantity of the rolls was relatively generous, as my girlfriend and I were completely stuffed with four. Each piece of fish tasted fresh, had a great texture, and was skillfully cut. Furthermore, the rice had the appropriate consistency and seasoning and the saucing of the rolls complimented rather than overshadowed the flavors of the fish and rice. Our total was about $50 which was super reasonable for four rolls of that size. Decent prices, good quality fish, and great service earn Katana a return visit, even if it is a little out of the way. read more

I love this place... easily the best and freshest sushi in the Richmond area. Consistently high quality food and service. Besides the friendly staff, my favorite thing about Katana is that they use very generous cuts of fish. Highly recommended!! As an aside -- I had a chance to layover in Japan once and spent a few hours venturing into the city to binge at local sushi spots... the way they prepare sushi at Katana always reminds me of that trip. A hidden gem, for sure. The sushi is as fresh as it gets, so well prepared and a great selection of unique rolls. The service is outstanding. I do not live in the area, so I can not compare this to other sushi spots in Richmond, but it is certainly one of the better sushi places I've been to anywhere. I'd recommend it to anyone. One slightly odd feature of the ambiance...hip-hop playing (which I personally love) but it seemed out of place in the dining room. Perhaps though it's what makes this place so great...on top of the stellar food and service, it's also a little quirky, not the norm. Gotta love it! read more

Enjoyed our late lunch here. It is not a fancy modern place but still comfy and more contemporary. Nice menu selection and prices very reasonable...especially with lunch specials. I tried a baked salmon sushi roll which is something I had only once before in another city. I enjoyed. I also had an order of salmon sushi. The salmon sushi were two generous portions of salmon each on a tiny bit of rice. This is something I get every place. This was good but my first piece was not as succulent as the second. Hubby tried the seafood tempura. It was disappointing. The fish inside the tempura was mostly dried out. The scallop was a tad smelly and the squid was chewy and mostly a lump of fried breading. We would not get that again and we do not recommend. It was a generous lunch portion. We started with the gyoza which were delicious. Service was friendly and wanting to please. We were the only ones in the place at 2pm-ish. Maybe the seafood tempura would be better at a busier time. Overall I kinda get the 5 star rating but I have been to 5 star sushi restaurants and this in my humble opinion is 3.5. Still I would stop here again if in the area. read more

We ordered the omakase ( chef's choice) and firefire roll (if you like spicy). I've been to a lot of sushi places in the area but this one is the best! The sushi is big, fresh, and really authentic. Surprisingly good considering the location. There have been several businesses in the same shopping center that have folded over the years, but I think this place gets it. The fish was extremely fresh, and their lunch bento box comes with a TON of food. Even though I ordered a second roll, it's enough to keep you full for the afternoon. Pretty cozy with generic Asian decor, but friendly owners and quick service. I'll definitely be back. B+ read more

The special sushi/sashimi special is the best deal as the slices of fish are HUGE and extremely fresh. Friendly service. They made a mistake on one of my rolls so made a special accommodation on another which was nice of them. Cozy place and sushi is well prepared/fresh for a small shop in the middle of no where. The rolls do not have exorbitant amounts of rice and have a decent amount of filling. The regular rolls (spicy tuna, California, etc.) are kind of small where you get 6 pieces. Definitely would recommend just ordering larger specialty rolls instead. Brown rice offered as well. I am so glad my husband and I chose this to be our date spot that one busy Friday night since other restaurants were too packed. It was quiet and inviting. We were the last two to be served before closing. The waiter was awesome! He took his time to explain the menu and offered to customize our sushi with our favorite ingredients. I had baked sushi with salmon, eel, cream cheese, and avocado (I forgot to ask for cucumber). It was topped with eel sauce and spicy mayo. DELICIOUS!!! So delicious that I didn't even realize my salmon was raw rather than cooked as I expected. It didn't matter because the flavors burst into my mouth and hit the right spot in my belly. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his baked sushi as well. We are returning in the next few days. I'm sure we'll become regulars as long as the food and service remains A1. read more

Yum! After trying two other subpar sushi joints in Richmond, I didn't think I'd find legit sushi here until I happened upon Katana. So fresh, so good. I've had high quality sushi in Japan, NYC, SF, etc. and this place is on par. Really. I was a happy customer with buttery salmon sashimi and light yellowtail. I also appreciated the free small plate apps before the meal - some edamame and a fried Rangoon type of thing. Worst Japanese food we've ever had. Warm sushi on a tablespoon of soggy loose black rice,room temp Miso tasted like old leftover salty water. We tasted, pushed aside hoping the main would be better. Eating plain warm fish with almost no rice bed was nauseating. Poorly compacted soggy black sushi rice bed made it impossible to eat sushi in any traditional manner. Tablespoons worth of rice beneath room temp fish just crumbled apart. Not normal sticky sushi rice. Friendly wait staff- do not inform guests you will not be served traditional sushi until Serving it at the table. That's very unprofessional. No sticky rice bed for sushi, no options for traditional sushi offered. Order was taken and served TO the table before telling us "we changed the rice, its a mixture of white and black rice, its healthy for you". Well that would have been fine but it was so poorly executed, it fell apart and was grossly wet and barely there. It's sickening to eat sushi with hardly any rice beneath. Im From NY & NJ. dined at the best Japanese eateries. Never had such an awful experience. Put a great damper on a pre-planned special evening. Would NEVER return. read more

Finally real sushi in Midlothian! Our entire family is die-hard sushi lovers and we have been underwhelmed with the suburbanized sushi in the area (re: steak rolled in rice then fried with mayo). Katana is the real deal; they even have toro sashimi on occasion. My personal favorite is spicy chiroshi bowl which is tons of sashimi with spicy red pepper Korean sauce (omg). Great value and they are very toddler/preschooler tolerant. read more

I cannot say enough about this place. Stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday with my wife while out running errands. From the minute we walked in until we walked out the service was spectacular! Water glass was never empty. Service was fast and friendly. The sushi might have been the best I have ever had! Beautiful presentation and some of the freshest and tastiest fish.
