When I heard Katie's had Rosemary Fig ice cream, I knew I had to make it a priority on my Cape Cod Cones list! Unfortunately, the weekend we had chosen to spend at the Cape (Labor Day weekend) was well past Rosemary Fig season :(. The girls behind the counter told me that this special flavor was only available from June-August, so we settled on a scoop of half Lavender Honey and half Sand (one of their signatures) instead. The Lavender Honey was just as expected and on par with other lavender sweets I've tasted--flowery and fragrant. The Sand, notorious for being a mystery flavor, reminded me of Lorna Doone's shortbread cookies--somewhat buttery and somewhat Vanilla-y. Its texture was grainy, which I'm sure was intentionally done as a tribute to the sand for which it is named. The chocolate specks and ribbons added visual contrast and flavor. In all, the Sand was a way more intriguing flavor just because it was so unique. Still, I wished they'd had the Rosemary Fig. Their waffle bowl, while beautifully crafted, was also a little stale. If I were to return, I'd time my visit to catch Rosemary Fig. Otherwise, the I'd say the Sand would is the only flavor worth making a special trip to Katie's for! read more

The streets of Hyannis were packed tonight, a Boston Pops concert had just let out, and there were hundreds of people roaming Main street with their lawn chairs and coolers in tow. A lot of them had the same ideas as we did, as a good percentage of the crowd peeled off into Katie's for some good old fashioned ice cream. Katie's is a cool place, with a dozen young friendly workers dishing out all varieties of "made on premises" frozen treats. Over 40 kinds of ice cream, 24 types of soft serve, yogurts, smoothies, sorbet, sherberts, gelato, even non-dairy soy ice cream. I had a small cone of chocolate-coconut soft serve, and it was one of the biggest "smalls" I had ever inhaled. And one of the tastiest, too. All in all, a very, very nice place. read more

Ok ice cream. Got a single scoop on a cup and it was tiny. Sometimes you go places and a single scoop is huge and you're glad you didn't get larger. This was not the case at Katie's. A toddler could handle the single scoop for almost $6. Service is terrible and very disorganized. One person taking orders, at least 20 people in line and no one filling the orders and serving guests. At one point the person taking the orders left the register to start putting together what was just ordered and no one took over waiting on guests. Then a few more workers came out and all started putting together the orders and no one waiting on anyone else. So 20 people stood in line and waited while 3/4 employees scooped ice cream for other guests. And THEN I get my order and it's microscopic and it's $6. read more

Now this is what I'm taking about! We went to cape Cod Creamery the other night and it was nothing special. When I eat ice cream, I want to remember it. This ice cream was good -- really good! The variety of flavors was on point (even when it's their off-season and they have less flavors than the peak season). The combinations were unique enough that you wanted to try them all but not so bizarre that they weren't tasty. My sister in law and I shared the pumpkin Oreo and the s'mores. The s'mores was creamy and fluffy (thanks to the marshmallow) and the Oreo chunks in the pumpkin ice cream were very hearty! I only wish they had their Cape Cod Sand to try. Not the best ice cream on the cape. They have a "cape cod sand" flavor that is a secret recipe and won't tell you what's in it, just "try a sample". I asked if it had peanuts because of an allergy, which should be a simple yes or no and she just looked at me and said sorry, it's a secret recipe and I said I'm only asking because of an allergy and she just looked at me. At that point I didn't trust ordering anything else even if they are "allergy friendly". If you can't tell me if the one flavor of ice cream has my allergen I don't want to order from you. A member of my party did get a cone but ended up throwing it away because of how bad it tasted. Who knew you could mess up strawberry ice cream?! Came here on a Sunday night. The wait was LONG out the door to the street. It's definitely worth the wait though. I asked the server what "Cape Cod Sand" was and she said "It's a secret recipe I'm not allowed to tell you what it is but you can try it" so I tried it and I'm sold!! All I know is that there's chocolate pieces inside and it's creamy and smooth. We also had "lavender honeycomb" and it is my absolute favorite :) We actually came back 2 days later in attempt to try some of their interesting soft serve flavors. But it most definitely did not taste like salted caramel. And the hot fudge was thin and barely room temperature. Love, love, love Katie's! Has been a terrific part of every summer for family and friends for years. The quality, variety (love me some Sand!), and great service by the young people that work there every year have made it something to look forward to each season. One recent change that makes no sense, though, and, frankly makes it's not nearly as much fun, is that they've blocked off the tubs of ice cream with their huge blackboard menu. You literally can't see the tubs of ice cream and who doesn't at least partially make their selection based on what looks good? You have nothing to rely on other than the name. Or a taste which is now doled out by one person. When the counter area was open, there were several servers, each helping a different group of customers who would then move to the cashier. Now, each group goes straight to the cashier and, if they want a taste, one person runs back behind the menu board to grab it. This new, completely nonsensical system means they've moved from serving several groups at once to one group at a time. In the summer, it's not uncommon for large families to come in and, if they all want a taste - and that's part of the fun - the lines will be huge and slow. They had a great system for years and why they decided to mess it up like this is anybody's guess. Again, it's amazing ice cream but the wait's going to be a bear. (Finally, it think having most of the staff work unseen behind this ridiculous menu board will serve to reduce the amount of tips these kids receive. There won't be nearly the level of interaction and visibility and, let's face it, in food service places, it's not usually the cashier we're tipping). read more

We have been here for the past 4 days. Even with the health restrictions Due to COVID 19 they keep the lines moving quickly and safely. There are marked areas to keep customers 6 feet apart.
