Japanese egg salad sandwiches are my jam. So I had to try this place at least once. We came when it opened and the wait to get food was rough. Have been desperate for an Egg Salad Sando since my trip to Tokyo years ago. This is a solid let down. Their egg salad has no flavor, and worst yet, it has a chemical taste. There seems to be no salt as well. The chemical taste possibly comes from the plastic wrap, or the processed sliced bread- I'm not sure. Couldn't finish my sando. This place gets it wrong on many different fronts. Their "wagyu curry" is literally gravy. There's no carrots, potatoes...or meat, like none. What it does have is plenty of sodium, aka salt bomb. I also made the mistake of ordering a second gravy...I mean curry...only to dump it later. They didn't clean their pork well at all. The very first bite was very flabby, which instantly grossed me out. The initial smell, too, was extremely off-putting. No doubt their oil isn't "clean," as the pork katsu reeked of seafood. The aftertaste of the residual grease was grimy, too, and left a yuck feeling afterwards. I dislike writing negative reviews, and had it been a "meh" experience, I would've just said nothing, but instead the summation of my poor experience at Katsu Sando lingered many days afterwards, much like their odorous katsu oil. Today came to Soft Opening Day 12pm-5pm. They will be doing Soft Opening this Saturday and Sunday. I arrived at little after 1:45pm and just missing the crowds of people. The staff was super friendly and the congrats to the owners!!! I ordered the Menchi Katsu Sando, Australian Wagyu. This was the first I had this, last time I was at the location in Chinatown and I ordered the Pork Katsu Sando with curry dip. The Menchi was juicy and tasty with Katsu Sauce. Love how they get the finest ingredients and also use fresh panko bread crumbs from Japan. Also I took home a Egg Sando, and that was delicious too. I might have to order those in bulk to have in my fridge, but you can get these grab and go Egg Sando from the coolers with their wide range of drinks and snacks. Katsu Sando has officially landed in the SGV! I came on 2/23/23 for their soft opening. They are located next to Bonchon. The location is bigger than the Chinatown location and has more seating. It's also very bright inside (thank you for the good lighting for pictures). I picked up an Egg Sandwich from their ready-to-eat fridge near the door and ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando. I saved the Egg Sandwich for a later snack, but the Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando was so delicious fresh. The Shrimp patty paired so well with the katsu sauce in the sandwich. I didn't take any photos, but my friends got the Fruit Sando, the Miso Pudding, and Menchi Sando. They absolutely loved everything they got. The friend that got the Fruit Sando said that she actually prefers this one more than the ones from Japan! The other friend that got the Miso Pudding loved it and said that the miso flavor was surprisingly not overpowering, which was her original concern when she was debating about whether to get it or not. This is not a place that I was itching to try because of the price and photos. Well, I was right. The Yelpers are a bit too generous for this place. Katsu Chicken Sandwich was good not great. Wish it was a bit crispier. Chicken was not as juicy as I had expected with the 5 star reviews. Bread was soft. I appreciate that the sandwich was cut in half. Slaw was not overstuffed/oversauced which was nice. The dipping sauce it came with was a bit like a spicy thousand island? They had lots of orders. It is a bit of a wait. They have limited hours which is why it took so long to try. Sometimes they close at 5pm. I probably won't be back unless I have guests who really really insist. this review is solely for the items I had: so I had the honey walnut shrimp plate + Sando , fries, & potato salad . loved the shrimp plate and Sando I appreciated the flavor and crunch. Came out fresh and served to my friend and I. The fries were delish and If you order the plate you can have it with curry, will try next time ! But it also came with side of slaw , katsu sauce and some sort of pickled side dish or was sweet but pretty tasty. The Shrimp sando my friend enjoyed it and she said it was good but requires big bite. The potato salad was EH just because I don't like apples in my potato salad , but it does add a little sweetness and freshness to it, but just not for me . Not bad though. When I come into the office on Fridays I look for someplace fresh and new. I'm a pescatarian so my choices are narrowed. I saw this place and the sandwich honey walnut shrimp sounded good with box of waffle fries. Can't go wrong. I was shocked at the portion size of the sandwich and fries. All for $20.00 I was only going to eat half the sandwich as the cut it for you but I ate the whole dang thing and most the fries. I'm so full! Saw that Katsu Sando opened up near me a few weeks ago, but decided that I would give it a wait since newly opened restaurants tend to be difficult to judge (plus the plaza that it is located in is absolutely terrible for parking). Finally I passed by and busted a round a bout to find parking and try this place out. Wasn't too busy for Saturday lunch, and I waited about 15-20min for my takeout order. Fruit Cream Sando - Being a avid fan of these things when it first popped up in Korea and Japan, I was excited that I could find it here in the States. First impression, looked so tiny, compressed, and sad. Traditionally, these should be whole or half fruits in a pillow of fluffy fresh cream between fluffy slightly sweet white bread, but these were definitely the malnutritioned version. 5.95 before tax for this I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Fruit was bleh, bread was just plain white bread with absolutely no fluff just there to hold everything in, but had a nice chew, and the cream was not a light fluffy fresh cream (left a very noticeable fatty oily texture in my mouth). If this hit all of the checkmarks I wouldn't mind the $6+tax, but this is definitely a no for me. Chicken Katsu Sando - Chicken Katsu was nice: crispy, light, moist, and not greasy. My issue here is the other components of this sando. The coleslaw was bland; it adds nice fresh crunch, but no flavor or nice acidity that coleslaw should add to a sando. The katsu sauce, I am guessing is what is on the bread, was also lacking. Places where the sauce is more abundant you get a ketchup-esque taste, but that's it. The bread is the same white bread, lightly toasted with the crust still on. Here the bread is okay, but is still there to just hold everything together. A fluffier bread with a nice sweetness would add wonders to this. Too steep of a price for just mediocre Sandos, but I believe there is room for improvement. Maybe if adjustments are made I would come back. read more

I only ate half for my lunch. I waited about 10- 15 minutes for my sandwich to come out but didn't mind since there were other people that had ordered before me. Inside is super aesthetic. While the pork was a fairy thick and tender it really lacked flavor and the breading completely soggy and without any flavor or sauce to tie it all together. The walnut shrimp sando had more flavor but more sweetness vs yummy. Also a no crunch situation. Overall I would not order a sandwich here again. Perhaps try the plates? As for the fries it was ok. This place is very popular but the shop is very small. We tried to get in, but the the line was really long and we couldn't find parking. The parking lot is small considering that it's being shared by multiple restaurants in the plaza. In my opinion, there is not enough parking space to accommodate the number of shops there. Also, the seating area is very limited. But the plaza has some open eating area by Paris Baguette. So the following week, we got there just right before they opened at 11am and the line was really short. We ordered the classic chicken katsu sando, pork katsu with rice and menchi katsu with rice. Bread was super chewy and just requires a lot of work for my teeth. Lol. The slaw was disappointing too. Not much flavor and very little slaw. To start with the mushroom katsu sando ($12), I am impressed with the thickness of the toast and it was toasted perfectly. Chicken katsu curry ($16), the meat was dry and the curry tasted fine, just like those premade curry blocks from S&B. Lastly, the pork katsu plate ($15), the meat is close to spoiled, almost sour imo. Didn't defrost the meat properly which gives you a dry and chalky texture. First of all. I been following Katsu Sando since they launched the original store in Chinatown and I'm soooo happy they opened one up in SGV because it's closer to home for me! Everything is great, but my GO TO is the honey walnut shrimp. I have eaten a lot of sandos and this is the first time I've seen someone take something iconic like the honey walnut dish and turn it into a patty. It's literally sweet and salty and has a crunch to it because of the walnuts. I can go on and on, but also the CURRY. You can not leave the store without trying the curry. Get the curry fries. The curry plate. Get a side of curry. I literally will take my left over curry and put it on things I'm eating throughout the week haha! It's THAT good. We got the mushroom sandwich, chicken katsu plate, and a 12 oz diet coke can. All total it was almost $34.00. The portion sizes were small and the ingredients were not of the best quality. Cheap rice, cheap sauce, chrap ingredients, and $2.50 for a canned soda. The seasonings fell short and lacked flavor. The chicken was very dry.
