I've been meaning to try Kaviar for quite some time now but it never happened until a few days ago. Now that I wished we had tried it sooner. Set on the second floor, you were immediately greeted by three giant warrior statues donning their samurai outfits to the right of the entrance. We didn't make a reservation but were seated within 10 minutes of arrival. We ordered the wagyu tacos (delicious!), toro roll which was phenomenal with the right amount of truffle oil drizzled on top, amberjack blue gin tuna roll, some nigiri sushi and some hot sake for sharing. Everything came out quickly, service was attentive but not overbearing. We had a great time and will be back soon. read more

Came here for dinner with a party of 6 and was able to make a reservation the day of. Generally dim lighting and very nice decorations. The menu is quite large and has a mix of hot and cold apps, full entrees, sushi/sashimi, and rolls. We tried a variety of rolls all of which were nice and tightly packed and didn't fall apart as soon as you picked it up. Since there were 6 of us, we were each able to try a piece of each roll since they generally came with 8-10 pieces. All the fish tasted fresh and the combinations were unique and tasty. Only complaint was the service at the end. Once we stopped ordering rolls, the server never came by to check if we wanted dessert or the check and we finally had to flag someone down. I would have liked to see the dessert menu since other people got something that looked like cheesecake but oh well. With no drinks, it came out to roughly $60 a person. read more

This restaurant has decent food, but for the price point the service was somewhat unjustifiable. You can simply get much better food with much better service for these prices. Service was either extremely slow or totally rushed (take 10 mins to bring some beers & then bring 8 dishes to the table at once). No sense of pace or thoughtfulness. What we loved: amazing quality of fish (from the unagi to the summer hamachi), really good starter staples like garlic edamame and gyoza, lots of sake options, and stellar service from Nick. What we disliked: the interior lighting is LOW. Like, distractingly so. We were seated in a very dark corner near the kitchen that felt unnecessary given that the restaurant was pretty empty. Also, found the rice for the nigiri to not be cooked properly and was extremely gummy. I'm hoping this was just a fluke. I think with the prices I rather go to a more authentic omakase restaurant. I'm not saying the food isn't good, but I don't think its worth the price. The fish was fresh and the service was very good. It was very quiet and dark during 7/3 lunch. I want to say only 4-5 tables were dining when I was too. Just tried Kaviar for the first time! And for Valentine's Day. It was a bit hectic that day, but the service was very kind and offered us free champagne for the few extra minutes of waiting. I did the prefix valentines menu with my partner and also ordered the uni pasta. Everything on the list was super tasty, light and very flavorful. They did not skimp out on the kaviar in each plate either. The uni pasta had a large portion of uni on it, which personally I really enjoyed. The pasta was creamy and soft, and the kaviar and small egg really brought the dish together. The drinks were tasty and light, it is mostly sake and not hard alcohol based, so it was unique. The ambiance is what really made the experience great. It is dim snd romantic, and they had cool Japanese decorations, samurai suit and a tree! The staircase going into the restaurant makes you feel like you are going to a different destination. Would definitely go back again! Kaviar is an upscale restaurant located in the heart of downtown Pasadena. In my opinion, it's expensive and bougie, but definitely worth stopping by at least once for the amazing food, service, ambiance, and experience. There wasn't a wait when we stopped by for lunch on a Saturday, but you'll have to make a reservation beforehand on their website. Parking is always a struggle because it's Pasadena, but I like to park at the old Pasadena schoolhouse structure (near color me mine). It's the cheapest I've found around the area and not too far from Kaviar! I came to Kaviar wanting to try one of the most luxurious sounding dish ever, the Truffle Toro: Otoro (Fatty tuna), caviar, and gold flakes. A three-in-one glamorous experience! This is the first time I've experienced this type of bougie foods. The presentation was stunning! It looked like it sparkled under the lights and had mist surrounding it from the dried ice. Taste wise, it was actually pretty good! I've had Michelin star Ootoro in the past, this dish tasted very similar: the fish melts in your mouth like butter and the salty caviar enhances the flavor- the gold flakes just looks cool. We also got the Uni Pasta, which was super creamy from the rich sauce, savory egg, and fresh uni (Sea Urchin). In addition, the Tonkatsu Ramen (it tasted different than traditional Tonkatsu) I actually prefer the traditional version. One of my favorite dishes was actually the appetizer, the marinated Edamame! It came to us hot and fresh, and full of flavor :) I couldn't stop eating it! Overall, if you want to celebrate a fancy occasion or want to try out their glamorous and unique Truffle Toro like I did, I recommend stopping by Kaviar. The service was 10/10 our server was attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. We ordered the Wagyu Tacos (20/10), the Unagi Sushi, (20/10), the Garlic Albacore Roll (20/10), the Blue Crab n' Salmon Roll (20/10) and the Shrimp Tempura Roll (20/10). Each dish was fresh! We heard about this restaurant before but it looked too upscale for us (students), so we were wondering whether it was worth the price. To make long story short, it was definitely worth it!!! She was in charge of our table and all the foods she recommended were all really really fantastic. She had a great taste for foods and we value her opinions. It was so so so nice, incomparable to the cheesecake factory, desserts there are joke compared to the one we had here haha At the end of the dinner time, we all agreed that this was our BEST DINING OUT EXPERIENCE ever since we came to US. (; Although honestly, I can't compare to those in Korea or Japan, because there one can get high-quality foods in a cheaper price unlike in US.) I've been in Pasadena since 2021 fall, and as a foodie, I've been to quite a few restaurants -- including most of the Japanese restaurants in Pasadena area since I looove sushi. I thought the other one in old town was the best near here (the one starting with O...) but now I changed my opinion:) It's never enough to comment about foods and how nice our host was but for those who are curious, I'll also leave a short comment about the ambiance of this place. We were pleasantly surprised at how great this place is- didn't even know it existed and found it by chance searching. It's a little too dimly lit for my tastes but each table had little lamps for you to adjust the lighting you wanted so that was a plus, otherwise for the elderly like myself, you basically can't see anything. =) In any event, all of the servers, staff, just everyone in the restaurant was all friendly and kind. A smile goes a long way and for quite some time, I've encountered a bunch of really snobby and pissed off servers who showed impatience and smiles that were forced (I think my bad luck) in Pasadena restaurants. Nick Bryant was my server and he didn't make me feel rushed and made great recommendations. He was ever so pleasant- repeatedly checked in on us to make sure we had everything we needed, the food was coming out correctly, our table had enough space, we had enough beverages. The restaurant ran out of uni and he immediately let me know and recommended great substitutes. (Ah, and he takes great pictures, he's not the guy who snaps one picture and done, he took multiple pictures from different angles so we can get a good picture. He kept going until he felt he got the best shot and that's the first time I've seen anyone do that.) I think service makes the restaurant even better and Nick certainly was quite perfect. The food quality- excellent. The only item we didn't like was the tempura- the oil was used too much and not fresh so the tempura came out brown. The blue crab handroll was excellent. We tried the Caviar (beautiful presentation and the little pancakes, butter with the caviar was a nice touch), mussels, Wagyu tacos, oysters, sunomono wakame, sushi was excellent, lobster roll, baked salmon roll, rock shrimp tempura roll, amberjack bluefin tuna roll, tataki crispy onion, miso glazed black code, uni pasta, spicy miso ramen, bonzai brownies, gojira cheesecake- we tried it all and it was all EXCELLENT. We're definitely coming back and will ask for Nick to take care of us again. It's been awhile since I found a new restaurant that we all loved so much.
