Kawawa Ramen is separated from Kawawa Japanese Restaurant. First of all, they have separate menu. Although these two restaurants are attached, and they are likely owned by the same owner, but let's make it clear and be fair when rating them under the correct account. The food was a 3 to 3.5-star while their service has improved over the last few years (4-star). No doubt the location is very convenient (a solid 5-star). I was there a couple times this month. Lunch was busy on a weekend. Dinner was not busy at all on a Sunday. Lunch: - Roast Pork - Shoyu Ramen The roast pork was marinated on point and the meat was very tender. If it was on bone, it would've fallen off the bone. I was surprised. However, it was a tad dry, but it didn't affect the flavour. Shoyu ramen was quite standard. It was the most basic and economical ramen on their menu. The flavour was not bad. Nothing was over seasoned. The half soft boiled egg was nicely marinated and cooked. I enjoyed the soup, which didn't leave me feeling thirsty. The one slice chashu was on the thin side. The ramen was a little al dente. Overall, it was an enjoyable meal. Dinner: - Gyoza (Pork and vegetables) (5 pieces) - Fried Chicken Ramen (Chicken broth base) - Beef Tongue Ramen (Pork broth base) The gyoza (pot stickers) skin was nicely pan seared on one side. The flavour of the stuffing was good on its own while dipping on the gyoza vinaigrette sauce tasted even better. The one critique was that the temperature was only lukewarm and not hot enough. Fried chicken was set on a side bowl while the while ramen was on a separate bowl in the chicken broth. The fried chicken had a nice umami flavour, yet the skin was soggy. The soup was creamy white with light flavour. The ramen was on the soft side yet not bad. They were generous on the corn and bamboo shoot. The beef tongue ramen was nice as per my friend. Hidden GEM alert!! You gotta eat here and you are missing out if you haven't! You can order any 30 items from a set menu for only $19.95! And these 30 items are like good filling items! It's remarkable because in any food court or any other restaurant, you cannot even get half the amount of food for this price! The salmon nigiri was very fresh and the chicken wings were amazing. The gomae was also tasty. Sure some items were meh but for what you pay you really can't complain. The service was good once you got it but they are understaffed for sure and the lady working there was scurrying around as fast as she could. Sometimes your orders are dropped but as long as you keep track and remind them they will bring you the food. Plus since it's any 30 items pseudo a la carte, you can pack the leftovers to go. I was in the mood for ramen or soup noodle when in Metrotown, and against my better judgement, I decided to give this place a try. Bad decision. The ramen was really really not nice, as what the reviews indicated. I decided to get the Kawawa ramen as I thought it might be better since it was more expensive. No difference. The broth was towards the bland side. I doctored it with the chili flakes. There were also fresh raw minced garlic and chili oil sauce on the table. That should be a clue --- not really Japanese ramen. The saving grace was the pork belly. That was flavorful but fatty. I scraped the layers of fat from the meat. The egg was also good. As for the rest, it was meh. The diners at the next tabled joked it was like eating instant noodle. I disagreed as at least the soup for instant noodle had more taste than this. The restaurant has a larger section that serves sushi, and a smaller space that serves ramen. This review is only for the ramen section. The menu is small, with a selection of ramen and some appetizers. Got their signature Kawawa ramen which had three pieces of roast pork, half an egg, some kimchi(?) in the darker, saltier soup base. Portion was pretty decent, the meat was good, and the whole thing tasted decent enough to me. Also tried the chashu from someone else's chashu ramen, and no complaints. Prices are not too expensive. I decided to go with the original (like a shio ramen). I honestly was disappointed, the ajitama egg was overcooked at didn't have that lovely custardy yolk. The temperature was lukewarm, not piping hot. The broth was so thin and it lacked that layers of flavor that I crave from a good ramen. The noodle was not springy. A decent ramen place, especially for a mall. It fulfills the craving and it's $10 for a bowl. Ramen comes in hot, and the consistency of the noodles is a good in-between for people who either like chewy or softer noodles; it's the kind of noodle that works for everyone. It isn't too hard & doesn't get soggy. I'd say it's the noodles that pulls the dish. Broth is alright, nothing special. The pork is of decent texture & taste, but you pay extra for two more slices. I got the kimchi ramen this time - it's literally just the regular ramen with kimchi in it, so that's the only other flavour change. The kimchi was good though, crunchy and flavourful. I don't like how crowded the seating areas are, though. There's this section by the wall where all the tables are squished together & you literally have to squeeze your body between your table & the other party's table. If you're looking for privacy, those seating areas won't help you, but I'm sure you can sit on the other side of the restaurant if you're lucky & there are seats available. read more

They have lots of choice on the menu, but then I decided to go with negi ramen. First of all, when the food come out, it is not HOT. it was like warm to cold which make me think... I thought the broth will be savoury but it turns out it goes to sweet side (probably of the corn). Noodle texture is good, but other than that it's a NO. The meat is so little(probably 1tbs), lots of green onion that I feel the green onion is not fresh. I rather eat fast food in food court rather than this ramen. Service was worst (0.5/5)! My father and I ate at the AYCE sushi side of Kawawa once, years ago, and it wasn't very good. However, this review is specifically for the ramen side of the restaurant. Malls aren't generally known for their excellent restaurants, so I'm surprised by how much I like this place. I always get the Tan Tan Men, and it's great. Lots of stuff in it, lots of flavor, and a good-sized portion. I'm also grateful this place has a meat option that's not chashu, because I dislike chashu, and a lot of ramen places don't offer any other options if you want meat. I also like the small, almost cave-like layout of the restaurant itself. I find it comforting somehow. It's simple, but pleasant. I've come here a few times and will probably keep coming back, especially in winter when a bowl of soup is just what you want. read more

They have a late night all-you-can-eat menu, so you feel like "I might as well." Recently went here for the second time and I really question why I came back. Firstly, I love oysters, so being one of the better items (in my opinion) on their late night menu that's worth eating, we ordered quite a bit. They started giving not exactly the amounts we ordered till at one point, when we ordered 15, they gave us 5 oyster motoyakis. The motoyaki isn't even that good, since it's not a full oyster and it's a tiny piece of oyster buried in a tin cup of mayo. Anyway, the cold tofu we got was really cold. As in there were still shards of frozen ice inside. The beef and chicken teriyaki was too salty, but was alright if you scraped off the teriyaki sauce. I ended up eating tempura, which did not make me feel the $16 was worth it. They seem to have pretty cool blended fruit drinks and slushes, but I didn't want to add $6 to my bill for a try. Let's not kid ourselves and admit that most Japanese restaurants in Vancouver are owned by the Chinese. That said, the food served at Kawawa is EXACTLY what you'd expect Chinese-cooked Japanese food to taste like: over-seasoned with MSG, cheap in quality, and tasting more like Chinese food than Japanese. I had ordered their katsu-don (fried pork chop rice bowl). After my first bite, I paused for a moment with a thought that arose in my mind. I then quickly went on to eat two more mouthfuls to verify what I was thinking: "o. 0 this is just soggy pork chops on soy-sauce-rice..." I forced my way through 1/4 of the bowl before I gave up because, well, it's soy sauce and rice. I reiterate that it's obvious that the place is owned by Chinese but they should at least give an effort to conceal it ; It didn't help that we sat near the entrance and could constantly hear the annoying teenage waiters chat in vulgar Cantonese. I'm going to state my conclusion at the beginning first so that I can save all readers from entering the same disastrous experience I had: If you're at Metrotown late at night after a movie, I guarantee you to have better service at McDonald's downstairs on the ground floor than at Kawawa. Maybe it was because it was Labour Day and the staff was forced to work on this statutory holiday, maybe all the girls that worked there are simultaneously experiencing PMS...but the service we received was very bad. My party and I stood at the entrance of the restaurant for approximately 10 minutes and we did not get any response from any of the servers/hostess. All we got was one 3-second glance in our direction, no acknowledgement that they knew we were waiting for a table, and certainly no assurance that they were going to work on getting a table for us. We noticed a few tables were clearing up, and the waitress still has not bothered to ask us how many people are going to be at our table. Finally, one of them came up to us and told us to come in. Come in? What about the fundamental question of asking how many people are going to be at the table? What happens if I'm expecting more people to come? During the entire meal, none of the servers like to make eye contact, so it was hard to get anything extra. My cup of tea was never refilled. Servers definitely lack social skills. Hospitality score: 0/10 So this is a ramen place. A bowl of ramen costs at least $6.95 plus tax. The menu is a disgrace: Some items are described so specifically that you know they will only give you THREE slices of meat, and others are as vague as "Luxury goods, to satisfy your hunger." Yes, that is a direct quote from the menu. Oh and their "Beef Tough" is actually cow's tongue (I found out from reading the Japanese/Chinese characters)...and no it's not a one-time boo boo, I think whoever wrote this menu honestly believed that the English term for a cow's tongue is "Beef Tough". Here's the message to Kawawa customers at the back of the menu to seal their coffin: "Dear friends Thank you very much for a long time to give KAWAWA Ramen support and care. KAWAWA Ramen will continue to maintain the enthusiasm to continue to operate Ramen definitely let you feel the taste of each bowl of Ramen KAWAWA's intentions. In particular, KAWAWA of soup and noodle quality requirements, because the KAWAWA Ramen believe there is life, and the soup is the soul of ramen. Our pot of soup, which is equivalent to 200 bowls of ramen soup, with dozens of pounds of pig big bone as raw material, boiled 10 hours with the fire in order to achieve KAWAWA Ramen the basic requirements. In order to ensure the taste and quality of noodles, We do not provide take-away and packing services, nor does it recommend the visitors to the bargain." Seriously, word for word, comma for comma...that's their message to customers. Even local restaurants in Mainland China had some traceable rationale to their menu's English translation, but this really takes the prize. Side dishes (ingredients to add to your ramen) are outrageously overpriced - $3.50 for ONE spare rib? I might as well go down to Superstore and buy myself a Value Pack of spare ribs. $1.50 for a small bowl of corn niblets....the only thing that made sense was $1.00 for a bowl of rice. Menu: 2/10 (sympathy point included) My cha shu (barbecued pork) ramen arrived with (count this) 1, 2, 3...3 slices of thinly cut fatty pork. The fatty pork was to be expected, but I never knew pork could be cut so thin. The ramen was obviously overcooked, and had that soggy noodle texture to it. The soup base was obviously not the "dozens of pounds of pig big bone", I could only taste the MSG. Overly oily. I've eaten ramen before, and the soup definitely shouldn't be as oily as this. I've been to four AYCE sushi joints in my entire life. I just don't like the idea of stuffing yourself until you want to barf. I decided to take my siblings there since we were in the mall and were really hungry after arcading (it is a real word). So pretty much it goes like this - you sit down, write how many pieces of what you want from their pretty extensive menu and give it to the server. About two minutes or less later, you have a table full of food. They have all the food already prepared so don't be too shocked when it comes at lightning speed. You can order two rounds, but mind you the portions are extremely small so you should plan well. I ordered forty orders of one thing and it still wasn't enough. They have sushi, sashimi, robata, meats, veggies - you name it pretty much. Quality is well... AYCE quality, but you can really stuff yourself and try new things or try a large assortment of foods. Service was nice, whole feeling of the restaurant was morbidly rushed, probably wouldn't go back anytime soon. They do have comfy booths though. read more

Ewww.. I hope you're reading this Yelp review before you walk into this restaurant and sit down .. as it could save you for being utterly disappointed, and money to take and spend else where. If you're already seated.. but haven't ordered.. And you're not shamed of getting up to leave: DO IT! There's a reason why the place is so empty! Other ppl sit down, pull up the review, get up, and walk out again :P Please read comment below "Henry B" for rating. The best thing about my ramen, was my side dish of corn.
