They did offer to keep trying different polishes but I didn't have time and honestly they should have you choose the bottle rather than the sample nail that looks nothing like what the polish in the bottle is like. Finally I just decided to go with a boring neutral rose color that mom would choose just to be finished with it. The sample nail and the color from the bottle were the same drab shade.

I went in for a mani pedi with regular polish (I have been trying to stop getting gel since it weakens my nails). The pedicure was fine, done by a woman (although she left bits of my old polish on my nail and the polish she put on has already started to come off). My manicure was absolutely HORRIBLE. First off, I had a bit of gel polish remaining from my last manicure and so the guy doing my nails (blonde hair) had to file it off but was being too harsh and staying on one area so long that it started to BREAK DOWN MY NAIL AND BURN. He also didn't full get the gel off and left pieces on my nail. I also asked the guy doing my nails to cut them short since I can't have long nails for work. He insisted I keep some length even after asking numerous times. My nails were long at the time and instead of clipping them like a normal person he used a nail file to file them down super harshly which made me feel like my entire nail was going to fly off. He didn't file the edges, leaving them super sharp and uncomfortable. He then cut my cuticles so harshly that he ended up CUTTING OFF A CHUNK OF MY SKIN. It started to BLEED and he didn't say anything about it and carried on. He then finished the manicure off by putting a super thin layer of polish and no sealant. Mind you my finger was still burning at this point from the cut. My nails looked terrible and you could see the texture of my nail (from the horrible job he did filing) under the polish. By the end of the day (my appointment finished at around 4pm btw and all I did was go home) my nails were already chipping and my finger was still bloody and sore from the cut. The sharp edges felt super uncomfortable. I called the next day to explain what I was experiencing and ask for a refund (I told them I could send pictures for proof) but the guy on the phone said they didn't do refunds and the best he could offer me was to redo the nails with the same color gel polish as long as I made an appointment in advance, so I agreed. I went in this morning (made an appointment per their request) and still had to wait. Then the guy who I'm pretty sure I talked to over the phone then said that I would have to PAY FOR THE GEL, so if I didn't want to pay the best they could do was redo the same regular polish. He also said they didn't guarantee anything and had told me this (which they didn't) making it seem like it was my fault. I was already there so I agreed for them to just redo the polish. The lady did it this time, it took all of 5 minutes and now my nails are all different shapes, sizes, and are peeling once again. I truly could have done them better myself. The nail polish they use is also super bad quality--the color doesn't end up looking like the booklet. Super RUDE, UNACCOMADATING, and INCOMPETENT staff... I have been to my fair share of bad nail salons but this one has to have been the worst. I was a little hesitant at first since I only saw a few reviews online, but her website has plenty of photo samples of her work, which really helped reassure me. Kathy is incredibly kind, professional, and very talented. She took her time and made sure everything was done perfectly. My full set of gel builder took about 1.5 hours, and I absolutely love how my nails turned out. They were perfect just in time for the holidays! She's been doing nails out of her home for about 3 years now on her days off when she's not working at a nail salon, and it definitely shows in her skill and experience. I'll definitely be coming back. FYI: Kathy accepts Zelle, Venmo, and cash only. The entrance to her salon is through the downstairs door by the garage. There is street parking available, and I recommend arriving about 15 minutes early to find parking.

Booked a last minute appointment at this place because I saw they do nail art! I decided to opt for a really basic gel manicure and pedicure, as I didn't want to immediately jump in. Thank God I did! Things started out fine, until I started looking at the tools she was using for my pedicure. I'm not a nail tech, but I have eyes, and those eyes told me that those tools didn't look clean! She was using porous tools that also looked used, which is especially gross IMO. I was skeeved out by this, so asked her to just take the polish off my nails and not give me a manicure. She took the unsanitized tools that she used on my feet to my hands and took the polish off, charged me 70 bucks, and sent me on my way. Talk about a chop shop! I wish I had pictures of the tools, but she had my nails soaking in the acetone cotton/ foil combo for 45 minutes while she did my pedicure. Just trust that this place does not look or feel clean at ALL.

The Swarovski crystals were pricey, so my fill came out more than the actual original set. They didn't communicate the pricing of the crystals being added to the cuticle until the END of my service, which is beyond typical for these types of nail salons. The nails didn't lift prematurely which is rare due to MMA usage in nail salons. The wait was at least 3 hours both times I went even when I showed up prior to open time to help prevent a long wait. I commend and appreciate for Andy making sure all the service providers executed shaping & design skills comparable to his. Most nail salons only have a couple of service providers who can execute quality in shaping and design, most aren't intentional about their service quality unless they are fishing for a tip. It's unfortunate to hear that service quality has declined and Andy has left the shop.

I travel frequently now so I don't get there as often as I used to but every time I return I am so happy it's still here! The pricing is right in the middle, neither the most expensive nor the cheapest. It is quite clean and with just 8 chairs and typically only 2-3 staff members, it's intimate and never feels rushed unless they are fully booked with a line out the door. I haven't seen that in many years and there is cute little bench in front of the salon and great coffee & boba near so even when you have to wait a minute, there is a comfortable and entertaining spot to do so - that particular part of 22nd street is great people watching! I usually call a friend I haven't seen in a bit & have them meet me there and they are lovely about us chatting quietly - and asking us every now and then if we would like some tea, or water. If you go in with reasonable expectations, you'll have a lovely experience. Modern Nail is the ideal neighborhood spot. I'm so grateful it is part of our wonderful Dogpatch!

During the wax, it was more painful than I expected, but I didn't think much of it since waxing can be uncomfortable and I trusted that I was in good hands. After she finished shaping my brows with tweezers, they were still stinging quite a bit. When we were done, she had me meet her at the front to pay. I wasn't offered a mirror to check my eyebrows, which wasn't a huge concern because I trusted her work. However, after I left, my eyebrows were still burning, so I used my phone camera to take a look. I noticed that the skin had been lifted on both eyebrows. As soon as I got home, I cleaned the area and applied ointment. I understand that accidents can happen during waxing, and I'm not upset that it happened. What disappointed me most was that I wasn't told my skin had lifted. I would have appreciated the honesty and some aftercare instructions so I knew how to properly care for the area. I hope this feedback is taken as constructive. Better communication in situations like this would go a long way and would have made my experience much more positive.
