PRENATAL MASSAGE.........IF PREGNANT DON'T GO! SAME WITH FACIAL. 1) I called in advance and was assured at 6 months pregnant they had an expert in prenatal. What a lie! The first problem was the foam cut out with the belly whole (in 2nd and 3rd trimester's women that are pregnant should NEVER lay on the stomach or back). Girl was shocked said everyone likes the belly pillow no problem lie on your side. Then she asked me to lie on my back which I am sad to say I did for a few minutes but then I got scared and twisted to the side and told her she needed to finish that way. It was horrible I had back spasms all night she did more damage then good and I am so mad! The positioning for massage varies with which trimester the woman is in. Generally speaking, in the first trimester the woman can lie as she normally would when she's not pregnant. In the second and third trimesters, the massage will be given sidelying and semi-reclining. The sidelying position uses lots of pillows and most women find it very comfortable. Another safe position for prenatal massage is semi-reclining. This position is achieved by creating a stack of pillows behind the woman so when she leans back she is sitting at about a 45 degree angle. Read more about positioning and safety. Why am I not supposed to lie flat on my back? You may have heard this from the doctor about sleeping on your back. The inferior vena cava is the major vessel of blood return to the heart. The growing uterus and fetus can put unwanted pressure on the vena cava possibly resulting in low maternal blood pressure and decreased circulation both to the mother and her baby. Some women report dizziness, shortness of breath, or other discomforts when lying flat on their backs, others however seem perfectly content. Whether a woman feels fine or not, decreased fetal circulation occurs. After 22 weeks it is best to receive massage semi-reclining to prevent decreased fetal circulation. Why can't I lie on my stomach? I've heard about special massage tables or cushions with a cutout for my stomach? I understand after weeks of being pregnant the thought of lying face down can be very appealing. Beginning week 14 laying face down (prone) is not recommended, even with specialized equipment such as "cut-out" tables or cushions. It is believed that strain to the sacrouterine ligament is likely when lying second and third trimester women prone on the table. This ligament holds the uterus to the spine. The uterus is housing the developing fetus and keeping it safe. It is best not to take any chances with disrupting the uterus and the ligaments that hold it in place. If the strain of gravity during a prone position is a concern then additional strain placed on the ligament when the massage therapist begins to massage the woman's back is of greater concern. The additional weight and pressure applied to the back during prone procedures may significantly increase intrauterine pressure. Again, no undue strain to the developing fetus is wanted or necessary. Also in the later stages of pregnancy many women are experiencing back pain. To lie them on the table face down shortens posterior musculature, compresses the lumbosacral junction, and rotates the sacroiliac joints. This prone position aggravates the very causes of many women's back discomfort. What are the pressure points I hear about that can induce labor? Certain Chinese acupuncture points can initiate and stimulate uterine contractions. Instead of using acupuncture needles, massage therapists use finger pressure or acupressure. These points can be used after 40 weeks of pregnancy but are contraindicated prior to a woman's due date. The points are named Liver 3, Kidney 3, and Spleen 6. Liver 3 is on top of the foot. Kidney 3 is located on the inside ankle and Spleen 6 is the inside shin area. To stimulate contractions, repeated and prolonged pressure is applied to these points. read more

I am new to Boston and surrounding areas. Finding a new stylist in a new city after JUST finding the perfect one before having to move was nerve wrecking. I'd already cycled through two in the city and was not satisfied. Keldara was a recommendation I wanted to give a try. The place has an odd layout but is intriguing enough to make you want to look around. My front desk interactions left a lot to be desired - all 20 somethings (as am I) that acted as if I was interrupting their personal conversations - Less then impressive considering how the salon markets themselves and their price-points. Speaking of price-points...I am not opposed to paying for quality services, however, the trek that I made from the city to spend a few hundred dollars ended up a mistake that I won't make again. My colorist was pleasant but the end result was not. In an effort to not be high-maintenance I left telling myself it wasn't 'that' bad. After multiple "what did you do to your hair?" comments I decided to make another trek back out there to get it fixed (now having to take time off work because its the only time they could get me in). I was still okay w/ my experience up to this point - I understand mistakes can happen. My attitude quickly changed when the entire time I was 2nd priority as she was working on another client and she didn't have time to blow dry my hair so I could actually see the "fixed result" (unless I wanted to pay for for that service - silly me, I thought they would go above and beyond since I had the inconvenience of making another trip). I was hopeful as the stylist kept telling me, "oh yeah- this is much better" but as I was drying my hair by myself in the back I found this was not the case. I lived w/ that "fix" for another month until I couldn't take it any longer. I ended up on Newbury Street this past week w/ a stylist who gave me the results I requested the first time around (an even bigger challenge now that my hair had been through hell and back). I saved travel time and paid the exact same price as at Keldara. (Although overall, I spent almost $500 for the month in order to get the results I was looking for). I was tempted to try some of Keldara's spa treatments but I agree w/ another review, why pay Newbury Street prices w/ regular solon atmosphere? Go for the 'real deal!" read more

It's the little things - the head massage, the tea available, the rocking chairs, etc. The stylists are fantastic - they spend the time to cut my hair how I want it and do a great job coloring. After going to Keldara for many years, I had the unpleasant experience of having to reschedule an appointment. When I arrived for my new appointment, I discovered that the bimbos at the from desk had given me the wrong day for my new appointment. When I was told that I came in one day earlier, after having driven 20 minutes to reach the salon, I was upset at the mistake. The staff did nothing to try to work this out - plain and simple, I would have to return the following day. At that point, I told them that I would not be returning. I was just allowed to leave without so much as "let's see what we can do". There were no followup calls for an apology either from the salon manager nor from my hair dresser, Sarah Connolly. I've gone to Keldara for different spa treatments for years. Recently I've scheduled a prenatal massage twice and both times they've called me that morning to cancel it because the staff wouldn't be in because of some very lame excuse. I am shocked that the salon would let this happen to the same customer twice in a row. I absolutely won't be calling them for a third time. To do that twice and offer no apology or compensation for the inconvenience is awful customer service.... Especially a pregnant customer. read more

Men beware! My wife called & asked if they can do a salt & pepper color on white hair. They said yes, Maggie specializes in men's hair. She did 4 foils on top of my head. Thought it would be. rinse but I figured they were the professionals. They charged me $100 but never showed me the top of my head. When I got home & showed my wife she freaked out. It was like they drew 4 black magic marker lines across my head or as people have stated, grill marks. I was leaving for vacation the next morning & they wouldn't even take me back to fix it. I wore a hat my entire vacation. My wife called to complain & not one apology was given & the stylist wouldn't call her back to help with a solution, She sent a picture to the manager trying to get it to the owner but never got a call back from the owner. Had a haircut with Vanessa and from start to finish everything was very good. Very little wait time, very clean facility with plenty of choices of beverages while you wait (tea, water, coffee etc) and very nice staff. Vanessa did a wonderful job with my hair, giving me exactly the kind of cut I asked for and did an AWESOME job with the head massage during the hair washing which was such a nice, unexpected treat. Also, worth mentioning---this is an affordable hair salon. I have very fine, somewhat short hair and I am never in a hair salon longer than 45 minutes including wait & wash times so I have a hard time paying $100+ for a haircut which seems to be the norm in most places from NY to Boston (I've been to quite a few). I am more likely to come back for regular haircuts and blowouts in between now that I don't feel like I'm being taken advantage of, and I can't wait to come back for nails & massages too! read more

I come here to get my eyebrows waxed once a month. Most times I am satisfied with the work done, but at worst the make the arches a little too thin. BUT at my recent visit I was horrified at how unprofrssionally my aestician took her job. I asked her to not make y eyebrows thin and to just wax the strays underneath and above. She put on the wax hastily and with no caution, I already had a bad feeling and knew she was rushing. She had spent much less time than other ladoes I had gotten my eyebrows done by in the past. As I took a look at brows after she had finished I tried my best not to cry. She completly got rid of the natural arch my eyebrows had and my brows are uneven and look crooked. I am very dissatisfied my experience and sad to say that this one mishap will keep me from returning to this salon. And a note for the future, please take your time when you are dealing with eyebrows, it can make or break your confidence. read more

I started to get a bad feeling from Keldara as soon as I walked in the door. The girls at the front desk were unprofessional and couldn't find my reservation, then I had to wait 20 minutes for my stylist (and I use the term loosely) to get to me. My hair was down to the middle of my back, and I told her I wanted a collarbone length cut with side-swept bangs and angled layers for volume. And yes, I showed her a picture for reference. During the cut, she didn't talk to me at all and I began to think maybe she was just having a bad day. Then when she was drying my hair, she would touch the blowdryer to my scalp which burned like crazy. By this point I started thinking maybe she is just a sadist. And of course when I put my glasses on to see what she'd done, my suspicions were confirmed: I now had blunt bangs that don't reach my eyebrows and a bob haircut. Then she had the nerve to ask me if I was going to cry! I couldn't believe it. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did, but I'd rather go with a sure thing than take my chances, so I sure won't be going back here again! read more

I have been to Keldara several times mostly because it is located within miles from my home. Unfortunately, I have never walked out of there with a cut or color that I absolutely love. I have had both senior, and junior stylists and do not find one to be much better than the other, especially for the price difference (junior $30-$40, seniors $60+). I have had to get cuts done by senior stylists fixed after washing my hair and blow drying it myself because of it being uneven, on two occasions. As for color, I have yet to have a stylist that can get it right. I had given up all together getting my hair colored at Keldara. The last time I was there, I opted for a junior stylist just for a haircut. Throughout the entire haircut, my stylist was having a conversation with 2 other stylists that was inappropriate to have while your working with a client. I felt uncomfortable the entire appointment, it was like I was just a model head sitting there. I will say the head massages are great, and they do nice blow drys. The salon is really nice inside, and more importantly clean. If only I could find a good stylist at the salon it would be perfect. Until then, I am still on the hunt for a stylist I love for a haircut. Luckily, I have found an awesome colorist at Armando Cassano right around the corner in Dedham square. Phew! read more

I went to Keldara to get my hair dyed. The hairdresser was very unfriendly and I felt as though I was an inconvenience to her. She had the shampooer do the entire process- VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! The stylist did not touch my hair ONCE. The only thing she did was mix the color. My hair was very patchy and about 2 shades darker than it was supposed to be. Eyebrow Waxing Review: I have made appointments here 5-6 times to get my eyebrows waxed. For $17 the shaping is just as good as a $10 wax from a nail salon, however the tools are more sanitary and the environment is much more relaxing! HORROR STORY: I am shocked by the unprofessionalism of this salon. I made an appointment last week to get my hair done for a wedding I have today. My appointment was at 10:00a.m and was confirmed numerous times via phone and text. At 9:44a.m this morning ( as I was literally pulling into the parking lot of the salon) I got a phone call from the front desk saying: "your appointment for today has been canceled because your hair dresser called out this morning." I said I'm sorry but why are you telling me this 15 minutes before my appointment and I have a wedding to go to this afternoon." Her response was: "ya I saw that, I'm sorry but no one is here to do your hair." The only reason I was going to this salon is because it was the only salon open on Sunday, normally I go to Salon Beni right up street, they are fantastic! But because they weren't open on Sunday i made an appointment at Keldara, huge mistake!!! I happen to know the owner of Salon Beni, Terri. I called Terri on her cell and told her the story because I was in shock and so frustrated. When I told Terri I was just going to go home and do my hair myself she said "no" meet me at Salon Beni and I can do your hair for you. Terri dropped what she was doing on her day off, opened up her salon, and did my hair for me! My hair came out perfect and I wasn't even a second late for the wedding. Salon Beni and the owners are amazing, professional, and talented. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

Worst experience in a very long time. Very poor customer service. My first appointment was booked specifically around my schedule for my stylist's schedule and a massage before. This was over 2 weeks in advance. I received the email confirmation and confirmed my appointments. I get there excited and ready to relax and I'm told that my appointments were canceled prior and that I was called. I state that is not true and had them research. My appointments were booked under another customer despite receiving the confirmation email. My massage is able to be booked but due to the select days my stylist works it would be over a month before I can get in for a cut. So I'm beyond frustrated and then told that another stylist could cut after my massage. Not wanting to wait another month I take the appointment. Now I go for my massage and the entire time there is banging and construction. So no relaxation. I'm still upset about my appointments. So finish the massage and go for hair. Explained that I want to keep it long, but to bring up the layers to add volume and cut off dead ends, bring up bangs in front and angle the front. She goes about cutting, seems to be done... Then blow dry. Only 1/2 inch or so trimmed, no new style, layers are barely 1 in apart. My hair looks flat and weighed down, no volume. This is absolutely not what I wanted and it looks like there was no style. At this point I am beyond frustrated and leave so I don't flip out. So no relaxation. They did comp the cut since they had messed up my appointment. But that's there loss of $80 for a trim. So once I calm a few days later I call to schedule with my stylist to correct the "cut". Appointment was made and I confirmed. The night before and today I have a family emergency and cancel as early as possible. I ask to reschedule. I call back and of course the next date is 2 weeks out again that is available. So I try to book for that date they have open. Now I'm told that they won't cover the cut correction since it is a month out. I'm sorry, this is ridiculous. You messed up my appointment, then mess up my hair cut, then while I'm dealing with a family emergency tell me that since it's one month out and my hair has possibly grown you will not continue to cover the correction. Maybe if your front desk had their shit together I wouldn't have had all these issues to begin with and would have been a happy customer a month ago. So as I'm dealing with a family issue you try to make an issue out of correcting your second mistake. You have lost a loyal customer and with that the dozen or so other customers that I have brought to your business. And I'm sure any other friends who see this post who go there. read more

I go here for haircuts and pedicures. Having worked in this industry and knowing first hand how other salons/spas "sanitize" their equipment, I have to give Keldara 5 stars on their sanitation. Their pedicure machines are pipeless, meaning they do not harbor bacteria. I've watched them clean the pedicure tubs and they are extremely thorough. For pedicures, they use a new nail file and buffer on every customer. They give the best pedicure massages and they dim the lights at massage time so you can relax. The polish always lasts until my next pedicure which is usually 6 weeks. Their pedicures do cost more than most places but you can't put a price on sanitation. They have all different price ranges for haircuts and they have a training program so all of the stylists are all up to date on the latest cuts which is great when my regular stylist is out, I can go to someone else and get the same quality cut. You also get a scalp massage when they are washing your hair - it's heaven! This place is the best! read more

I have NEVER had a bad experience at Keldara and trust me, I am a PITA when it comes to my hair. I've had several stylists--not because they're not great but I sometimes have a funky schedule and am confident that whoever they schedule me with they will do me a solid. Yes, they are pricey, but it IS a salon and day spa, not Supercuts. I've been going there off and on for a good 10 years, I've tried other salons and I ALWAYS wind up going back to Keldara. While yes, they are pricey, there are options such as having a new talent stylist which I believe starts at $20 or $25, they offer free bang trims with no appointment necessary and honestly I've never had a poor experience with their reception staff. I guess if I walked in expecting them to bow to my feet because I was going to plunk down my cash for a service rendered then yes, I suppose their unwillingness to do that would be considered "snooty" but they've always been great to me. Never had an instance when I've felt I was treated rudely, but then again I always begin the experience in a pleasant manner........ read more

Warning: If you are excessively busy and have kid support issues think twice about this place. I have had numerous services at Keldara and have been regularily happy with the outcome. The prices are outrageous but I always felt it was worth the investment. So I had some problems getting to some appointments, had to cancel a few times, and then had a brain freeze and forgot an appointment. I had rescheduled for this Friday and included my daughter to have her first salon experience in preparation for this coming holiday. Now because I did have to cancel I am walking around with hair that is not to my liking...I desperately need my color done. Not something I am proud of but ,there it is. So imagine my surprise when the day after I schedule the appointment the nice girl calls to say I now must pre pay for all services..really?..I was annoyed and no I would prepay but I will keep the appointment. It dawned on me today that I never got a confirmation phone call for tomorrow's appointment. I call and Katie at the desk informed that I do not have an appointment for either me or my daughter.....what? I have 20 coming for dinner this weekend, a first communion in a few weeks and grey hair that should not be showing? Who does this? What salon gets such a huge ego that it throw customers out the door. Katie looked into the matter and the owner Jean and Donna will not service me unless I pre pay for services because when I cancelled they couldnt fill the slot. While I get the logic, it is truly bad business. I don't know about anyone else but I don't have the extra $125-$180 lying around to hand over to Keldara the almighty. Luckily they are not the only game in town. Called around and the salon around the corner can take me and my daughter tomorrow. my friends and I went for a pedicure the other day . $50.00 and it was the worst pedicure that I have ever had. to begin with they were out of both of my friends opi colors,the actual pedis were 45 minutes long (of which i really dont know what they did) because at the end my feet did not look and feel like i just had a pedi. my girlfriends polish was bubbled and my other friend polish one of her nails the polish had turned white..I told the manger how unhappy that we were and she took 10.00 off the price..anyways we had to come back after lunch to get my friends(the one that her nail turned white) fixed and another manager came out and offered us a free 15 minute foot or back massage.by the time that i got home and felt how rough my heels were I called back and told them they could take their free 15 minute "offer" because it was awful and we NEVER would come back...even for free read more

I've been going to Keldara for about 3 years and I have to say that I get the most consistently good haircuts there. People have complimented me on my hairstyles since I started seeing Kristen. Is it pricey? Yes. Not terribly overpriced, but more than you'll spend at other nice places in the area. Are the receptionists snotty? Maybe a little, depending on who you get, but that doesn't really bother me, and the stylists treat you very well--and they are honest. If you ask for something that they don't think will work for you, they will tell you. Sometimes it's not what you want to hear, but I'd rather the honesty! I spend A LOT of money here (I come about once a month for color maintenance), so I do wish there were other options/incentives for frequent customers (maybe a discount after the 6th visit if it happens within a year). You do get rewards points for products which is nice, but I'd rather put those rewards toward services. The best part of getting your hair done at Keldara? The head massage. read more

I just got my haircut by Nicole at Keldara. Now that my hair has dried I can confidently say, I love the style! I have very thick curly hair and have tried multiple salons and multiple styles. I have constantly searched for a style that is professional, midlength, but flattering for my unique look. Because my hair is so thick and curly it is easy to cut it in such a way that it looks great wet, but not so good dry. Well, Nicole found the magic cut. She used the French style cut to frame my curls around my face (but not in my face as I hate when my hair falls over my eyes) and then knew to cut it differently in the back so it wouldn't have that poofy look in the back. Aside from a great cut, the price was right at $35 for the cut and wash. In addition, the place is beautifully decorated and I love sitting on the "porch" sipping tea and butter cookies they have available for their customers. read more
