I've been here a couple of times and this review reflects the most recent experience. The 3 of us got here a quarter to 6 on a Friday which is when they open and I put my name down. This is the trick. You gotta get here early or you'll end up getting lost in the crowd waiting to get in. (Alternatively, you can come here super late and avoid the wait.) We got tuna bone, Russian Roulette (6 dumplings one of which is filled with wasabi), okonomiyaki, beer tower, and fried tofu. Everything was delicious except for the fermented soybeans (natto) which I don't think is meant to taste good lol. It was my first time having the tuna bone - apparently they only have like two a day and it's sold out by 8pm according to my BF. For $5 you're basically eating sashimi, it's a win-win situation. Service was great considering how busy they were. They checked up on us occasionally and food came quickly. The place is clean and not too cramped (unless you're sitting all the way in the back by the restrooms). I can understand the grievances due to long wait, but the place is popular, what can you do but to get there early? It's no different than waiting for brunch at a popular spot. I LOVE Kenka! This is definitely my favorite place to end the night after several hours of irresponsible drinking in East Village/St Marks. Yeah they have a menu with some weird shit on it, but 90% of the menu is standard izakaya stuff, and it's pretty good too, especially for how crazy cheap it is. The beer is super inexpensive too. I used to love Kenka but after not one but TWO cockroaches crawling ONTO the table while we were eating.... yeah won't be coming back. We had to kill them ourselves and report it to the staff who seemed unbothered. I would probably give this place 3 stars for the quality of food but I always have a good time when I come here, despite the long wait. Make sure to come early and put your name down for a table because it gets super busy around dinner time. Later at night you can get seated pretty quickly. Also, the interior (and even the menu) is X-rated so just be aware before bringing your friends and family here LOL. The menu has a very large selection of drinks and Japanese dishes to choose from and they're all pretty cheap, I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 here. Five Stars for the $8 pitchers of Kirin! What a great deal in nyc. The was a favorite place of mine during grad school and every time I come back, it brings back great memories. The food is good for the price you pay and it's really a steal considering this is Manhattan. A few of the selections we made - the takoyaki- these were most likely premade and heated up, but it still tastes pretty good - the gyoza tasted really gingery/garlicky - the okonomiyaki was what you'd expect, just a little bit on the small side -the chicken yakitori was well seasoned, just not as hot as I'd want it to be -The age dashi tofu was pretty good as well We ordered a bottle of the seasonal sake and it was pretty good!! I think Kenka gives you fantastic bang for your buck. The menu is quite extensive so we were able to try a bunch of different things. We got there a bit before 6 and waited maybe 20 minutes to get seated. Honestly, there's plenty of seating inside. Maybe the kitchen backs up or maybe they like having the crowds outside to draw attention but there were plenty of empty tables. This place had a great ambiance! The decorations were interesting for sure. Other yelpers have mentioned that staff were rude but I found them to be normal. I would come back and like to try more items. If you are looking for a really nice Japanese yakitori where you can take a date on a fancy evening, this is NOT your restaurant. However, if you are looking for a super kitschy, super fun, fairly traditional yakitori/izakaya with a HUGE selection of Japanese comfort food, tons of different Japanese beers and sakes, and are looking for *cheap,* then you will love Kenka. The menu seems to go on forever; they have everything from grilled meats and fish to ramens and udons to curries and other Japanese classics. Everything is priced very inexpensively; a couple can easily eat and drink their fill for less than $50. Everything comes out very quickly, and while there can be a line to get in, you won't spend a lot of time eating here if you don't want to. I will caution everyone, there are quite a few different naked images/effigies scattered around the restaurant, so if you are planning on bringing young kids, keep that in mind. THIS IS THE BEST SPOT ON THE BLOCK! I have lived in the area for over 20 years and can say this is my favorite spot to go to at St Marks Place. You need to get a reservation and wait to be seated because the place is always packed so try to be there early with your whole party! The food is delicious and the alcohol is cheap. Really not a fan of this place. We came by here because it was the only place that service omurice. We waited a little bit because the place was packed but we didn't mind. Once seated, we had a rude waitress and only one or two out of 5 dishes we ordered was good. I liked my zaru soba and my cousin got an udon soup I think, which she liked. Two people at our table got ramen that they just didn't end up eating because it wasn't good. The omurice was terrible. It came with a cream sauce. Since when is omurice served with a cream sauce? It also came way after all the rest of the food came. We were celebrating an occasion and brought a cake in and were serving it ourselves when our waitress came and told us to put it away because no outside food was allowed. I understand the rule but boy was she rude about it. Extremely expensive cost for not a good meal with crap service and extremely loud atmosphere. Came here more times than I can remember, for good reason, I would describe this as a dingy japanese yakitori place for cheap drinks and eats for college students or a fun casual place for friends to hang out and drink. They have an extensive menu, so it's really easy to come back because there's so much to try and they have lots of drink options too. GREAT place for late night munchies because they are open until 2am. Really good place to go with friends because you can get a little bit of everything and share, and the food is usually super cheap that way. To avoid the lines, I would say get there before 7pm or go after 12am. But even when there are lines, its usually not that bad. I have waited 20 minutes on a Saturday night 7pm for a table for 5 before. Their fried chicken is usually really good but this most recent time I went, it was missing the amazing crunch and they didn't even give us mayo and that seasoning dipping thing.. I was questioning if I ordered the correct thing but there's no other fried chicken thing on the menu I think..? The chicken fried rice with egg on top was also amazing the first time I had it. But this most recent time, it was meh. Their rice balls are alright, I recommend the miso fried rice ball, it has a beautiful crunch, like the rice on the bottom of hot bibimbap. But miso is a bit salty so if you just want the crunch, get the normal fried rice ball. The ramen I've had before and I know it's bad because it's not a ramen place, but I was craving something soupy so I got it again this time and it basically tastes like supermarket semi-fresh ramen in soy sauce broth. My partner and I go to Kenka almost every time we're in New York. It is by far our favorite place to eat, because of its cohesiveness between food, atmosphere, price, and service. We first started going here because of the giant tanuki statue at the entrance, and the decor inside does not fail to impress with its gratuitous fetish theme. I could see how this would be shocking to some people, but it somehow seems perfectly normal in this place. The staff is usually hurried because it is always busy, but they've always been good to us. With so many options (of varying levels of adventurousness) the food can be hit or miss, but there are some real winners!! The ume onigiri (rice ball with pickled plum), niku udon (beef noodle soup), BBQ squid, okonomiyaki (like a Japanese comfort pancake), and the ume chazuke (rice porridge in fish broth with plum) are all amazing and staple plates for us, all in the $5 range. The taro is bland and not as fresh as some places, they never have the mackerel, and the angler liver is definitely an acquired taste/texture. There is complimentary cotton candy with the check! The beer is really cheap, and there's a pretty good selection of sake. You could get away with spending less than $10 for a great meal, but it's also easy to get carried away and spend $50+ if you're feeling gluttonous. I'm so glad this place exists. We will likely never afford a trip to Japan, but we can afford a trip to Kenka. read more

We finally got seated after 1.5 hours of waiting. It seems they purposely slow down the calling process to ensure the inside isn't too packed/busy. They have wide variety of sakes which I loved and variety of Japanese draft beers which is not too common in my area. We ordered bunch of things we wanted to try and also was told they don't have lot of the things we wanted. No more sea cucumber, ran out of tuna bone, etc. I was disappointed that my "intestine" dish wasn't actually intestine but a stir fry with tripes in them and pretty salty. Beef tongue and chicken skin skewer were decent, takoyaki was just okay, yakisoba was kind of weird but grew to like it as I kept on eating it lol. Turkey testicles had a texture of liver and taste meh, bull penis was like a thick tendon- will not need to order that again lol. Cotton candy machine is kind of gross. The food here is hit or miss. I tried multiple things on the menu and I thought the takoyaki roulette was fun and one of the better tasting items. The yakitori combination skewer sticks were terrible and over priced. My favorite thing about this place was the free cotton candy powder they gave us. They give it to you after you pay for your meal, so don't forget to take it with you on your way out. Kenka is not a typical Japanese restaurant that serves sushi. If you are a picky eater or a person who does not like to try new cuisine, I will stay away from Kenka. Kenka theme is really different from other restaurants. It more of a pub that is open late for people to drink draft beer at a price of $1.50 and the large section of sake. A pitcher of beer is cheap too! The menu has warning that inform customer of what they can not do such as NO vomiting in the restaurant (they will charge for cleaning up). Also this place does not allow SAKE-BOMBS but they do serve a large range of Sake. So know your limit unless you have deep pockets since each violation is $20 on your bill. This place was crowd by 8:00PM but we had reservation which is a good idea if you plan to come with a group of people more than 4 since the wait seem long. If this is your first time here the menu is very confusing and large. I will recommend the japanese curry and takoyaki. The takoyaki is my favorite appetizer here! Great place for drinking and de-stressing with friends that enjoy different Japanese food than just sushi. Not a destination for ramen, or set meals, or anything non-shareable! It's izakaya food, and perfect for groups and nibbles over beer. Despite the kitschiness and gimmicky-ness, I love the atmosphere here. Yes, this is that place on St. Mark's, a few steps below sidewalk level, with the blue signage and perpetual cloud of hungry people waiting outside. Put your name down on the list at the bottom of the steps. You will not be acknowledged if you try to walk inside. On a Monday night, 6:30pm, our group of 4 was called and seated in 15 minutes. It was a full house, but the space doesn't feel cramped - discounting, of course, the tiny chairs and the tables that are solid blocks underneath so you can't really put your legs anywhere. It was annoying even for me, and I'm short. None of the food is startlingly impressive, but all of it was served at the right temperature (and that's half the battle). Agedashi tofu was okay, karaage (fried chicken) was good but on the salty side, and beef tataki was rougher than what I expected (I was hoping for more along the lines of beef sashimi). Onigiri was fine; two of my companions felt it was not salty enough. Miso BBQ intestine tasted like most other intestine, which is to say, awesome. The okonomiyaki was very thick and denser than I'm used to, and my piece had a ton of flavor and multiple bits of squid, but my companions seemed to get the shorter end of the stick. Plates are small; aim for 3-4 per person if you want to leave with sadder wallets but happier stomachs. Service is speedy. The four of us also split a pitcher of Asahi, which I think was $15. We were in and out in 40 minutes, but if you have any intent of spending a longer time here, don't be shy about keepin' em coming. For those riddled with a generic entree format in most of their outings, this is a great option for a fun and interesting group meal. At the end, with your bill, you get a tiny sample cup of cotton candy mix. Dump into the cotton candy machine in the front and swirl yourself a little dessert using the provided chopstick. Don't let me babysit your kids. Cuz I almost got myself drunk. Let me explain. Perusing through the extensive menu, which was a mish mash of words and not necessarily organized in a way to make it easy on the eyes, I quickly bypassed what I thought was the section of various alcoholic drinks and saw a drink section listing various fruit flavored calpico beverages. Yum, I thought, as I have not had calpico in ages and just seeing it listed with the different flavor combinations (mango, peach, green apple, etc.) on the menu activated my salivary glands in a way that I had to dip my tongue in calpico's sweetness. So I ordered the mango calpico. The waitress came back a few minutes later and said she is out of mango. Recalling the other favors in my head, I went for the peach flavor. And this is when things went awry. It's as if God presented me with a second chance to think about whether I really wanted the calpico. The concoction arrived in a pint glass like a two layer ozone, with the bottom half being peachy color with bits of fruit and the top half a milky white, and just beckoning me to stir it together with the straw. Giddy like a kid in a toy store, I took a quick stir and a big sip. Immediately, I said to myself this tastes a bit off. After about the 5th sip, I was convinced this contained alcohol, and I motioned the waitress to ask if this was the correct drink. She asked me if it was not strong enough, she can add some more soju. What?! Who said anything about soju? Oh well, no point in wasting good alcohol. So onto the food. The fried oysters were genuine with the expected metallic, briny taste cutting through the panko breading. The fried pork cutlet was good, but the accompanying curry lacked salt, thickness and the oniony punch that the curry at Udon West delivers consistently, which is only a few doors east on the same block. Lastly, the garlic fried rice was flavorful, and it was just that. "Garlic rice" would have been a more appropriate name for the dish as there were no other ingredients, meat or vegetable, in this "fried" rice. All in all, it could have been worse. Saturday night, 10:30pm, party of two, 45 minute wait. But it was chill, we killed time at the ratchet karaoke spot next store. Came back, missed our place in line, but service was incredibly nice and understanding, put us back on as the next table to be called. Seated within 10 minutes. Got the beer tower, for just us two girls. We asked if it was too much but the waiter was encouraging. Turns out to be the best decision of the weekend, so much fun. 3.5 stars. Mostly because I am ignorant. I took 1 star off because, well some of the menu items scare the bejesus out of me. Bull balls, you know, stuff in that vain... .5 stars off because every time i order beef, I get the fatty peaces...I mean if a mofo orders meat, he wants meat. I order beef w/ rice, etc, not fat w/ rice. If I want fat, I will find a nice girl at a nearby bar, thank you very much. That being said, this place is funny. Its a good place to bring people who have not been to NYC. And others who live here. They have a diverse menu, they are consistent, and at the end you get sugar to make cotton candy. There are scantily clad women on the walls and menu here and there. The menu is funny. seriously. When you are going to leave and you are mixing your cotton candy on the chopstick, you should watch your head. I have hit my head a couple of times on that little shack roof. read more
