I have been coming to Khanh's since they were across the street - then Town & Country. The best thing I like about them is their cleanliness, friendly staff and consistency. When I order something I had tried, I know it will be the same even after many years. Simple and yet flavorful dishes with fresh veggies and non-greasy. Clean bathrooms! My family's favorite include rolled-bbq beef plate, seafood combination II, chicken pho and most of all their spring rolls. Lemon grass chicken is also a plus. You can not find many Vietnamese eating here because most of them want cheap food. However, if you want quality food, good service and nice ambiance, their price is justifiable. I enjoy taking clients and friends here. I will most definitely continue to get my Vietnamese cravings from this place. read more

Just had lunch there with a couple of friends. I've always driven by it but never stopped. Today was the day. While the place is clean (used to be Denny's or something) which always helps, the food wasn't as tasty as I had hoped it would be. I ordered the Beef Pho, my friend Carmen ordered the Beef Stew, and Gabe ordered the Vietnamese Crape. The crape and beef stew from what both my friends said was good. My pho on the other hand was a waste of money. It barely came with any garnishments, and there was very little noodles. The broth was not flavorful as most had indicated on here. I love Khanhs! They owners are super sweet and they have great service! I love the Vermicelli beef rolls. They bring you the rice paper and all the ingredients and you wrap it up yourself. The beef is yummy and comes with lots of fresh basil, mint, and cilantro. The Pho is also very good and not too oily like most places. Definitely recommend this place! read more

When I am craving fresh spring rolls, this is where I go. They don't skimp on the good stuff: every bite will be full of shimp, noodles, pork, lettuce, and mint. You can order them in bulk and split with your party. Sooooo good. I have ordered other things and I sample items that friends get; it is all decent although not spectacular. I typically get spring rolls and a bowl of crab and asparagus soup and leave a happy and satiated. This place is clean, has a demure 80's style, and fantastic (friendly, quick) service. They also have a pre-packaged dessert fridge that is fun to explore - although the only outstanding item I have had (dessert wise) there was a key lime mousse cake with chocolate accents (yum, fluffy and decadent without being too weighty). Still a great place if you need to eat and don't feel like waiting on the Row. That said, the past two times we've been in there, we've said we'll never go back. We ordered the duck noodle soup, It tasted like Instant Ramen (Actually, Instant Ramen had more flavor than the duck soup). I went here last year. Foods ok, service was sooooo slow. The boss lady and another waiter guy was walking around telling me to wait for another waiter to come and take my order. Do not the egg rolls! They have a weird after taste- I hope I don't get sick. We told the server to taste the eggrolls and to check it out; however the manager said it was fine and normal. I don't know about their taste buds - but I know what an eggroll should taste like. I ordered the combo one and my girlfriend ordered the egg roll vermicelli. She could not eat the eggrolls - my combo had some eggrolls too and it tasted bad as well. The springrolls were good - but like everyone else says the prices are overpriced for Vietnamese food. Not your average Vietnamese restaurant! If you're looking for pho, sure, Khanh's has that, but you'd be missing out on the other wonderful Vietnamese dishes that they serve. Actually, I don't even recommend the pho because I've had better elsewhere. Instead, they have a great variety of other Vietnamese entrees that I never knew existed. I had my first Vietnamese seafood crepes here and they are amazing. They come with a crunchy turmeric crepe stuffed with shrimp and bean sprouts. There is also a plate full of herbs like mint and basil to stuff the crepes with along with a sweet fish sauce for dipping. This is my absolute favorite thing on the menu! I also love lemongrass chicken and the catfish claypot. The catfish is moist and tangy with caramelized onions. Mmmmm :) For dessert, they have these amazing individualized sized cakes in all kinds of tempting flavors - chocolate mousse, mango mousse, tiramisu, green tea mousse... This place is definitely a family run restaurant with family run prices! Skip the crappy mall chain food restaurants and go to Khanh's after a day of shopping at Valley Fair. The food is good...but for me, the big advantage of Khanh's is the ability to handle a large group with grace. We like being able to bring a group of ethnically diverse people here knowing that the staff is able to cater to their needs fairly easily, yet still have an authentically Vietnamese food experience. Also, they easily accommodate separate checks, which seems to be so difficult for some restaurants in this day and age of the computer. At our last lunch, we took up a large table on a weekday and stayed for over 2 hours -- no hurrying or impatient attempts to move us along. The above comments probably explain why some people say the food seems unadventurous and perhaps more appealing to American tastes, i.e. no mystery meat cuts. They have desserts which can add a celebratory note if desired as well. For the food, we have had the pho, stir fries, vermicelli, sandwiches, spring rolls. All have been fresh with especially large vegetables. Our restricted-diet friends were able to find choices easily. We were looking for an alternative to our typical Vietnamese spots. I recall driving by this location and thinking "that's a pretty nice place for being a Vietnamese restaurant". So we give it a try. The place was large, clean and smelled clean. Service: It was initially prompt but soon after I had to request water thrice. I don't understand why some places give you tiny cups of ice water. The waiter was young, nervous and probably new so I let it slide. Food: I ordered the Bún tht nng and it was the best I've had to date. The fish sauce was not pungent like others I've tasted. The wife ordered the ph bò and she was disappointed. She said it wasn't authentic and that it tasted Americanized. The spring rolls were delicious though the peanut sauce left much to be desired. Overall: I thought this place was great. My wife is definitely pickier when it comes to Vietnamese food so I suppose if you're looking for more authentic this place may not be it. When we walked in I commented "wow no funky smells" while she said "oh that's not a good thing and it won't be true Vietnamese". I was craving for some good ol' traditional pho. Didn't get it. Khanh's is not a typical Vietnamese pho restaurant. It was quite americanized in my opinion. However the place was clean and it was close to where I was at the time so we decided to give it a try. The food was a bit more expensive. My pho was $7.95 for a small and was not worth it. The soup was a bit bland and it was a supposed to be a combo but it lacked all the little nitty gritty bits and pieces of goods (like tripe )! I only had some beef and meatballs...which was just not satisfying enough. So all in all, I was disappointed. However, the service was superb there. I usually ask for extra lime and other places will give me an extra two IF I'm lucky. But this place gave me a whole bowl of lime, and I was excited I didn't have to ask twice! Do not be scared by the Shoney's like exterior/interior. The food and the service are very good. We decided to try the beef and shrimp meatloaf as appetizer because when you've had one spring roll, you've had them all. It was not attractive...grayish mound of meat with bits of vermicelli and slivers of mushroom...but it was DELICIOUS. Put a small spoonful on a white shrimp cracker, top it with some pickled shallots/radish/carrots and cilantro, and pop the mess into your mouth. I always thought that Khanh's would be overpriced and Americanized since it was right across the street from Santana Row. I am so happy to say that I was soo wrong! Khanh's has a wide variety of Vietnamese food, and they provide you with all the flavors that come with it. I highly recommend Khanh's if you have family or friends in town that want different choices of Viet food to eat. OMG..... if I could give a ZERO, I would! This place is horrid, how can you people who are vietnamese can't differentiate between REAL vietnamese cusine? Even the restaurant FUEL, just a block down away is more authentic then this joint who impersonates themselves to be a vietnamese restaurant! I can truly say that the cusine here has been altered so much to fit the American standards, that its sickening. The pho and the spring rolls here is soooooo totally not worth the price! I ordered a bowl of pho, that had only beef in it. The soup tasted so watered down, that I couldn't recognize if it was pho or not, except for the essence of star anise in it. The spring rolls was barely even vietnamese enough! I don't really know how people can eat here, its not even REAL vietnamese tasting cusine. Located across from Santana Row, I wondered whether a Vietnamese restaurant would be genuinely good or cater to the fancy american crowd with pan-asian cuisine. To my surprise, it was actually a decent place to get Vietnamese food, albeit at inflated prices. Walking in, it's clear that there aren't as many Vietnamese / Asian customers, and with the selection in San Jose, that's to be expected. The prices are 1.5 to 2x the regular price one would pay in a hole-in-the-wall, but you pay for the location and ambiance. It feels like a higher-end restaurant on the inside, and service is definitely attentive. I politely asked the waiter what he recommended on the menu, and he asked whether I wanted soup vs rice dish. His recommendation on the soup side was the egg noodles with duck (mi dit tim) and his recommendation on the rice side is the shaken beef (mi luc lac). Taking him by surprise, I ordered the egg noodles. (he told me in his 30 years, I was the first Vietnamese customer to actually order what he recommends. Every one else just ignores his opinion) Honestly, it was a well done bowl with the noodles having an excellent consistency, the broth nicely savory, a good amount of pickled vegetables on the side, and plenty of duck meat and fillings. Solid choice. I have yet to try the shaken beef, as the $22/plate price turned me off from a dish I can reasonably make at home. However my server assured me that the quality and cut of the filet mignon used surpasses the typical cut of beef (any other cut honestly), and more than makes up for the price. If you have the deep pockets, give the dish a shot. So if you need an authentic Vietnamese food fix after shopping at Santana Row or Valley Fair and want a place within walking distance, this fulfills the requirements. However for a short drive you can easily find just as tasty dishes for nearly half the price. read more

Overpriced Vietnamese food catered for non-Asian people. I feel horrible saying this, but unfortunately, it's true. My experience with Vietnamese restaurants is that the higher the price, the worse the food. Khanh's is no exception. Their pho was super bland. You couldn't taste any kind of spice in their broth. On top of that, they don't have the normal stuff you could order with your pho- including beef balls and tripe. They don't have a combination pho bowl either (which is pretty standard for most Vietnamese restaurants). I mean I guess it makes sense, seeing that the restaurant is closer to Santa Row, so it's geared for tourists, maybe, but it's still not an excuse for the lack of taste in their food. I'm an old-time fan of Khanh's, back when it used to be across the street before Santana Row was built. The new Khanh's is pricier and more upscale, but is still good. I'm sure they chose to remodel themself like that to compete with the high-end Santana Row. This place is nicer and cleaner than most Vietnamese restaurants and it's a good place for lunch/dinner with your parents. Except pho, everything here is good. I really like the spring rolls here, thit nuong w/rice, the clay pot with special rice, and everything else . This place is strange It feels like I'm inside of a Marie Calendar's...but with vietnamese food. hahah. Food was pretty good, the staff was very friendly and everything came out within 5 minutes! we had the appetizer sampler, which came with fried spring rolls, fresh spring rolls, and a steamed meat cake with shrimp chips... I had the rice vermicelli with pork and shrimp. It was delicious, the pork was tender and the shrimp were large, perfectly cooked, and sweet...although at almost triple of what i'm used to paying for it. My sister had their pho which came in a HUGE bowl, and had lots of meat. She thought it was good, I thought it was decent. After 10 years, my mom and I decided to lift the ban we imposed on Khanh's Garden. I'm sad to say the ban is back on! Back in the day when they were still located at Town & Country Village, it was one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in town. Once the Santana Row construction began, they moved into their own location across the street. The reason why the ban was in place is because they were discriminating against their own kind. It was apparent that non-Vietnamese (White) customers were getting preferential service to Vietnamese customers and I can't support a business that does not practice equal treatment to all. Fast forward to last weekend... The restaurant was filled with mostly non-Vietnamese patrons (not a good sign for a Vietnamese restaurant). I ordered the Bun Thit Nuong (Vermicelli w/ Grilled Pork)($8.50); disappointing. The noodles were mushy (not strained of moisture), the pork lacked flavor and the nuoc mam (fish sauce) was like water, no taste at all! On the other hand, the Hu Tieu Dac Biet (special Noodle Soup)($7.50) that my mom ordered was too salty. She eats pretty salty to begin with and had to ask for extra lime to dilute the taste. There was almost no meat in her soup and the seafood was imitation. This restaurant tries to be upscale but fails in it's attempts. You can tell from the moment you sit down and see the plastic spinning tray of sauces (like in a pho restaurant) that this is no fancy restaurant. I'd recommend Vung Tau over Khanh's garden because everything from the food to the service is better and for relatively the same price. read more

I always get the Sweet and Sour Catfish Soup here. The large is big enough for hubby and I to share. That with two bowls of rice and their fresh spring roles make a perfect meal for two. Man.... I was so excited to come here after 8 years because I remember it being so amazing! So delicious! Well, it wasn't. It was a very slow night so I was surprised that everything seemed so rushed. My food was not spicy, even though I asked for spicy and the noodles were fried even though the description did not state that. I asked them if they can give me a different noodle since I thought it was another type of noodle and I actually pointed to the noodles on my friend's plate - well she came back with the same noodles that had been fried but this time not fried. Casual Vietnamese fare, delicious food. Though a bit pricey compared to the Vietnamese restaurants in the bay area. I think the portion is perfect. I'm not a big eater, so for me the portions are perfect. If you have a big appetite...um, go elsewhere? haha. Also, let me clarify for those who are craving Pho: This place isn't it. Go to your favorite hole in the wall for pho. In my humble opinion, they do other dishes better that they do pho. This is probably one of the nicest and cleanest Vietnamese restaurant I have been to. I come here specifically for a couple of my all time favorite dishes - their bo luc lac and flan, sometimes for sit down and other times for takeout. So much so that when I walk in now the older gentlemen asks me - "bo luc lac and flan?" Yes, please! The bo luc lac is soft melt-in-your mouth perfection. My favorite non-fine dining restaurant for bo luc lac and I've tried this dish everywhere. Ask for it medium rare if you would like it soft and tender. I request mine with red rice. I've come here numerous times for their bo luc lac and only once was it not up to par (was dry and tough). 98% consistent from my personal experiences. A little pricey at $15-16 for their bo luc lac but I feel it's worth it how soft, tender, juicy, filling, and satisfying it is. Their flan is not the best I've ever had (I've eaten flan virtually everywhere available) but it's at minimum average or better and still tasty and satisfies my flan spot. Their takeout service is friendly and efficient. Takeout wait time specifically for my order is approximately 15 minutes if stopping by and not calling the order in ahead. When dining in, food normally comes out in 10-20 minutes. Khanh's Restaurant is located right across from the Winchester side of Santana Row. There's ample parking in their lot and the times I've eaten there it's not been too crowded nor have a long wait. A great option for pre or post shopping at Santana Row or nearby Valley Fair. read more

Being Latina, maybe I don't have the palate to discern good/mediocre/excellent Vietnamese food, so I should preface my review with that. I had a crazy craving for a noodle bowl (the kind with grilled meat on top of vermicelli on top of salad), at 10 pm on a Friday night. After driving for what seemed like forever, I realized this restaurant always seems to be open late and gave it a shot. BOY was I glad! I was immediately ushered to an area devoid of any other people (I was sick and not about to complain about dining alone!) and given a menu. After just a couple minutes, my order was taken and I was promptly served my iced jasmine tea. DE-LICIOUS! Shortly thereafter, my food arrived. Again, I don't have the fanciest tastes but it hit the spot, and then some. The employees were so nice, checking on me often enough but not too often, and despite that I was dangerously close to closing time, they never did anything obnoxious like vaccum around me or under my feet (hel-LO El Amigo Burrito in Santa Clara...). Waiter got a good tip and I left happy. Craving satisfied! That said, I would consider coming here again but it is definitely a little more costly than other pho restaurants. Then again, I am perfectly used to frequenting hole in the wall restaurants, so that may be why. read more

Located near the ever-crowded and popular Valley Fair mall, this is in prime location to get lunch before or after shopping with a friend. I would categorize this restaurant as a slightly more fancy (or at least clean) place that somewhat warrants the higher prices. Here's a list of what I've found to be worth getting: Fresh Rolls - assuming you know what a fresh roll is, it doesn't get much better than these. They live up to their name of being fresh, and each is made with such consistency and perfection. The peanut sauce that they give you is not much different from anywhere else, but it seems to taste that much better because of the quality of the roll itself. BBQ Beef Vermicelli - this is a salad that is topped with grilled onions wrapped in juicy slices of BBQ beef. They give you a sauce on the side (I believe it's a type of fish-base sauce with sliced carrots) that I pour onto and into the bowl. Vietnamese Special Fried Rice - This is one of my favorites. Although very simple, once you remove the lid from the clay pot, the smell of the sticky rice cooked with ginger takes you over. The chicken is cooked to tender perfection, and I can't think of many other places that cook it better. It's a really filling dish, and unless you are hungry beyond compare, a small portion, should do, especially since you might have ordered an appetizer. Asparagus Soup - A simple soup made from asparagus and boiled egg whites. It's really tasty, but I'd recommend ordering this if you have at least a party of 3. read more

After a visit to the Winchester House my friends and I got fairly hungry, Yelp yielded this Vietnamese eatery with fairly good marks from people. I'm not sure what the people here were raving about but this place wasn't good at all. I suppose I should have known since it's so close to Santana Row but I really was hoping for some good Vietnamese food. Back home in New York, tea is complimentary, here they charge $1 per pot of tea. I didn't like that but paid anyway. The spring rolls that came with the sampler plate only came with one leaf of lettuce, when we asked why we didn't get more the waitress told us it was just a garnish. I decided that I would get the BBQ pork "bun." (Vermicelli bowl) The meat was ok, however the noodles were soggy and over-cooked. Overall, don't bother, you're better off at McDonalds and it's cheaper. read more

Hands down, the best place for your Pho cravings. The service is wonderful. I've been coming here regularly for a few years now, and the staff always remembers me and makes me feel right at home. I've noticed this with other customers who walk through the door, as well. The owners really are sweethearts. The restaurant is so clean, and the ingredients are always as fresh as can be. You MUST get their Fresh Rolls. Delicious. Loaded with fresh shrimp. I don't know what it is about their fresh rolls, but I haven't found any as tastey at other Vietnamese restaurants. Their Pho and other soup dishes always have the perfect broth, definitely great for your hangovers! I've also tried their hot pots and other dishes, and don't ever recall leaving the restaurant disappointed. Prices are pretty average. Have you ever tried to explain an idea to somebody in the simplest terms possible, only to later find out that they're actually more in the know about that particular subject than you but didn't want to brag or embarrass you by admitting to it? I'm sure by now Khanh's owners have realized that they're not fooling anyone with their "Vietnamese" food. The lack of flavor in their dishes is truly disappointing. I'm not sure if the food is purposefully bland to accommodate what they believe to be the "American" taste bud or if the chefs plain lack the talent and ability to cook authentic Vietnamese. I thought the fresh rolls were very good. The rice vermicelli with shrimp and pork was just ok. (much prefer Bamboo Leaf in Santa Clara) But the service was excellent. Very attentive staff.
