Kung Pao Chicken with fried rice: Taste: Not the normal Kung Pao Chicken from a Chinese restuarant. The sauce for the Kung Pao has a unique flavor but none the less tasty. Tastes like Hoisin, sriachia, light soy sauce, or kecap manis (sweet soy sauce). Fried rice is average. This place has one of the best won ton soups and sea food noodle plates I ever had. The vegetables are so fresh and judging by who is preparing the food it is truly authentic. My company works throughout California and we often search out Chinese restaurants. Trust me there are some real gems out there. Once a year I fly to Hong Kong, unpack at my 2 friends condo, rest up and take the hour and a half train ride to Shengen(Shenzhen). There I as always after a strong 10 year friendship and solid business relationship I get to see Hu-short for Huaguang to go over new product manufacturing materials etc. for my business. I never eat in Hong Kong with all of it's touristy utilitarian eateries but, I'm always a guest for dinner during my 10 day stay at Hu's along with his family for some very, very authentic Chinese/Cambodian cuisine. Before we left his factory he wanted to treat me to his special spot, a little hole in the wall (one of around 10 at the train station) 6 chairs and table joint that translates"Food to Soul & Body." And so my fellow Yelpers, I have found Food to Soul and Body's twin right here in North Long Beach. ====================================================== So, after reading Pauline L's review my continuing search for one the best Chinese/Cambodian hole in the wall 4-5 star eateries has brought me here to Kim Sun Kitchen. I was astounded by just how close Kim Sun Kitchen was (not in a appearance) but how things are done, the variety of homemade extras and the dichotomy of exactly the way to Food to Body and Soul operates. I walked up to a very small window underneath pictures with numbers to place my order and, yes as tradition dictates the elder of the family (in this culture the male) is running the front operation. In the back ALL of the cooking is done by the older sons and the daughters are, hand making fresh additives, extras, doing inventories of packages of rice and other necessities lying on the floor. In the midst of all of this serving, greeting regulars and newcomers. Oh where is mama you say? Most likely doing the book work, paying the bills and ordering. Tradition dictates this to be so as much as I have experianced this culture. This I did at home as I always opt to do because when food is your emotional friend I desire privacy. Chinese Bread-$1 Four 6 inch long pieces of shear delight that resemble a buttermilk donut before it is glazed. This bread is made specifically for soups and other dishes for dipping. Inside there is a honey comb that quickly absorbs the broth or other meals juices during and at the end of your meal. I mentioned I found them on yelp from Pauline's L's review and my server said "nice but we only have a few reviews" and I said yes but they are 4- 5 star reviews and they are what brought me here.. I almost forgot to write a review for Kim Sun, which graciously fed me a quick, cheap bowl of Phnom Penh noodles right at closing time a few months ago. I sat down, ordered the noodles and a water, and set to eating as quickly as I possibly could. Unfortunately, as quickly as I can is painfully slow. In elementary school we got 45 minutes for lunch and recess combined. I never got to experience recess because I would always still be eating when the bell rang - and this was for a kid lunch of a hardboiled egg, a sandwich, and some grapes. Anyway, I really enjoyed Kim Sun's broth. It was fish-saucy enough that it didn't need any extra fish sauce from the table (unusual for me; I tend to dump it in). The pork pieces were reasonably tender, but the shrimp was really impressive - still textured like cocktail shrimp despite having been presumably marinating in the broth for awhile. The tiny cottage would be hard to find if it wasn't glaringly out of place in the strip mall filled area. It looks like it was a small shop at one point, selling electronics or comic books or motorcycle gear or something. read more

Kim Sun Kitchen is only a 1 minute drive away from my house and also the closest Cambodian/Chinese restaurant so my family and I frequently come here! It's a really small space that has nice natural lighting. Definitely not somewhere you go if you want a romantic, classy ambiance. But I don't mind because the food and customer service here is great! The beef lok lak and beef stir fried flat noodles are staple Cambodian dishes and made really well here. Delicious! The Phnom Penh noodles are tasty and cheap ($6). The food here reminds me so much of my mom's cooking- homemade and authentic. Definitely recommend this place for good Cambodian food! read more

Came here because waiting for Top Speed auto to do an oil change, and this place is usually closed when I came by. I was so happy to see it open and busy. (Busy restaurant is always a good look) Ordered the beef lok lak and pepper steak. Curious about the salted plum soda and egg soda, but not adventurous today. It smells good in here. Home-style khmer food, in a home-style khmer environment. I follow a halal diet when I eat, so Khmer food generally works for me; there isn't too much pork going on, it's mostly beef & fish. Everyone that goes in here usually knows someone eating there, or working there; it's the only good khmer food on the north side (Long Beach) If you're new to khmer food, go w/ someone more familiar w/ it; if they have the ingredients, they'll cook it, so your favorite dish there may not even be on the menu. Any noodle dish w/ gravy is a good bet; Cambodian food is real savory, so I would suggest their version of lad na, or ordering (mi~kah~tan) w/ an egg cracked on it. If you're looking to share a meal w/ someone, try ordering some fried fish & beef lok lak w/ a side of rice; if you don't like both flavors, you'll definitely like one. read more

I asked for hotter tea and I was replied with a quick no, I proceeded to ask why I won't be served hot tea and was replied "We don't serve hot tea cause if you get burned you can sue" I've never been in this situation before. The BEST Rice-noodles you can get at a Cambodian Restaurant in LB. Let that statement soak in a bit. Yeah, I when people find out that I'm actually Cambodian (since I don't look it), they like to ask me where the best Cambodian Restaurant is. It wouldn't be fair for me to say "My Mom's food", so I suggest the noodles at this little hole in the wall. I've been to quite a few Khmer/Cambodian restaurants, and none satisfy my craving for Khmer-style noodles quite like this place. I've been here a few times yet only had two food items - the combination fried rice and the Rice-noodle soup (K'theau). Why only two items? Because once I tried the noodle soup here, I couldn't convince myself to order anything else. The broth is clean, rich, and flavorful, and the noodles are cooked perfectly - soft, but not overly so. All orders of the soup come with the customary mound of sprouts and lemon on the side. I usually order mine with beef brisket and beef meatballs, or if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll get the fish/squid balls. The only thing I might change is the amount of fried garlic. I like a lot in my soup, but I suppose not everyone likes a lot of garlic like I do. As for the combination rice, it wasn't the best. I suspect that the other items on the menu are as mediocre as the rice, but don't take my word for it - they could very well be amazing, but that's not why I like this place. Service is good. You might have to ask for a english-speaking server if you need one. One will always be on hand at any given moment. If I could, I would give this place a 4 1/2 stars though. The atmosphere is a bit lackluster (to say the least). But it doesn't detract from the awesome noodles, so yeah... GO AND EAT NOODLES NAO PLZ. read more

My family has been going to this restaurant for Saturday lunch for years-- noodles in a clear broth are a staple lunch item for Cambodians and Kim Sun serves a great Phnom Penh noodle. A good bowl of Phnom Penh noodles should come replete with slices of beef liver and meat, ground pork, cubed pigs blood, shredded chicken and shrimp--sometimes there's a piece of calamari. The broth should be a clear beef broth with cilantro/sliced green onion swimming atop. Kim Sun definitely delivers this. My mom always taught me to dress my bowl of noodles with a squeeze of lime or teaspoon of vinegar (red or white), a sprinkle of sugar to balance it out and sriracha for heat. I also like to take the brine from the table top jar of pickled jalapenos instead. Or you can ask them for a little bowl of vinegar and they'll be happy to oblige. As a suggestion, ask for the thick/flat rice noodles instead. The reason I thought of Kim Sun again was that I hadn't been there in about a year and my mom came home the other day with two orders of their "Bai muon" (sp?) which means chicken and rice. I think it's one of their notable dishes that's not mentioned a lot in the reviews I've read. They boil the chicken and then serve it over rice that's flavored with the chicken broth. It's all served with a lemon garlic fish sauce that's my definition of awesome sauce. It's like hainam chicken but distinctly different because of the dipping sauce. The chicken tastes so good-- even though it's been boiled it retains such a savory "chicken-y" flavor; I think it's the quality of the meat because you can't add spices to mimic that. Give it a try if you want something different than a bowl of noodles. Kim Sun is run by a family in a really small location right next to a bike shop and bridal store. It's pretty small so parties of 2-5 are a must. They have a menu board with pictures for more common entrees. I believe it's cash only so come prepared. read more

Anytime I get a chance, I will always support a family run institution over a chain restaurant. If you want Khmer food Kim Sun is the place to visit. Location is literally in a house. Seats 15 people max. Doors are always rotating from sitting diners or people ordering take out. Family run servers always friendly and food never faulters. I wouldn't say that it's the best bowl of noodles I've ever had, but considering the price and the authenticity of the food, I'd say that this restaurant is worthy of 4 stars. It basically feels like you're eating something that your mother or grandmother would make at home. The biggest downfall though is the selection of meat that they put into your bowl of noodles. Not the best cuts and you are left with a lot of very hard-to-chew pieces. Be warned though, this place is a little difficult to find. Just use the large Superior Supermarket as a landmark.
