My best friend and I happened upon Kinda Tropical when we were checking out my new work digs in that part of town yesterday, and the fact that it used to be a gas station just adds to the cool factor! The outdoor vibe feels like where you'd want to go to grab a bite after a surf session in Costa Rica! Very chill! The music was spot on, too, and we dug it! The unsweetened tea was delicious! No sugar needed! Since this wasn't happy hour (boo hiss!), we opted for the ubiquitous "sad hour" iced tea! It was good, though! My Cuban self naturally gravitated towards the Cuban Yucca Fries, and they were yummy, but they would have been much more crave-worthy with a side of deliciously garlicky mojo criollo! The jalapeño avocado dip that came with it in this iteration was very American and mayo-based. Nothing wrong with that, of course! It just wasn't super in the heat of Austin's almost summer, but I'd order it again! For my main, I went with the Fried Shrimp, and it was a truly lovely presentation. My bestie was a HUGE fan, but I detected a distinct hay taste that, increasingly, is my culinary nemesis. I must have a massive sensitivity to alfalfa, if that's what it is! I actually have no idea, but whatever it is just tastes like walking into a barn to me! In any case, the shrimp was fresh, vibrant, and perfectly fried, the rice and pickled onions were lovely, and it was a perfect lunch dish...for the bestie! The Burger (with the vegan patty) - This was my girl's choice, and she loved everything about it except for the patty. "It tastes store-bought", says she. "Take a risk, people!" Interesting, said I! I didn't try it, so that's all that I have to offer there. Long story short, once I move in to my new job in those parts, I'll be sure to revisit Kinda Tropical many times to try out their gorgeous-sounding salads and their inventive happy (non-sad) hour drinks because this place has a vibe that's my jam, and I'm also looking forward to eating in the inside there in post-COVID times! Came here for happy hour with a friend and it was fun!! It is crowded/loud and casual so be aware that's the vibe but it was just what we wanted at the time. They have a lot of classic drinks, I had a marg and during happy hour it's pretty reasonably priced. They have ample outdoor seating and some limited indoor/bar seating. They have real food too but I didn't try it so couldn't comment. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with recs. Overall this place is a very casual, fun vibe! Absolutely solid bar with a lovely, dog friendly patio that's completely unpretentious. The drinks were all good (we got the draft zombie, cucumber frozen margarita, watermelon mint gin frozen, Old Smoky, and Mezcal Paloma) and the sesame chicken salad was fantastic. I'm pretty sure chick fil a's chicken biscuit is way better. I also had the agents coopers dream and labuff stuff. The drinks were pretty good but again, nothing special. It felt like any other bars/brunch place on the east 6th. I was in town visiting and I'm so glad my friends suggested we go to Kinda Tropical! It wasn't too crowded, so we only had to wait in line for a minute. The weather was nice out and they have a huge outdoor seating area. You order at the counter and seat yourself and it was easy for us to find a table for 5 people. We didn't have any of the drinks, but the food was incredible. I had the soyrizo breakfast tacos and we had quite a few things for the table including queso and yucca fries, which were both so good. To celebrate their 24th birthdays, my two Aries friends hosted a 24 hour birthday celebration, which really turned into a 72 hour affair of food, drinks, and dancing. Between closing down the club at 3 a.m., having trouble finding a lift home, and then afters, we weren't tucked in bed until near 5. But that didn't stop us from hauling over to Kinda Tropical, our final stop of the weekend, at noon the next day for brunch. I'm in my on-time era, so I got there right on the hour and tried a drip coffee to wait for the crew. Even though my head was pounding, I sat in the delightful, ambient courtyard to make the most of it. There is plenty of group seating and a solid canopy of trees to let in just enough sunlight to feel something. After 30 minutes, the squad finally arrived. Through we were a disheveled mess, the food was prepared to impress. The staff delivered our meals to the table, and if the sunlight didn't revive us, the food certainly did with fresh ingredients, intriguing combinations, and aesthetic presentation. This meal was vital as the final stage of commemorating our friends and fueling us for our ultimate frisbee tryouts later on. As we were relishing in having chosen the perfect establishment, we received news that our ultimate frisbee tryout scheduled for that evening had been postponed. At that point, a brave few endeavored to try the cocktails. While I did not join them that time, I will certainly be returning to do so, soon. Fun place we discovered right before heading to the airport! Don't let the front deceive you, as the back patio is very nice and the food is solid. Ordered the fried egg sandwich and thought it was good. Bacon probably would have filled out the flavor they were going for but unfortunately I don't eat bacon. We settled for the curly fries which taste like any curly fries you'd get at places like Arby's, but they cost $8. We got a mango frozen margarita (watery and bland) and the draft zombie (sugary fruit juice). Very expensive for what you get. The closest comparison of Kinda Tropical is Better Half. They feels like sister bars. Both have crazy underwhelming food and drinks despite the cool vibe and aesthetic. My friends and I recently came here for drinks and we really enjoyed everything about it. The drinks were fun, unique and so delicious! We tried the fried shrimp, jackfruit sandwich, and curly fries. All of the food was so good, probably one of the best jackfruit sandwiches I have ever had. It has a really fun and relaxing atmosphere as well. Unique decor and lots of seating inside and out. Great older style music, lots of places to sit outside or in, mister's outside and miniature golf as well. Inside, lots of plants, all real, very homey very comfortable very clean. I live right down the street from Kinda Tropical and was always intrigued by the exterior. I finally decided to stop in with a friend for drinks before dinner one night and was pretty impressed. It's an old gas station that they completely remodeled and turned into a funky restaurant. I love this idea because you can still see the gas station "charm" in the design so to say but they truly turned it into a fun Austin gem. My friend got a jalapeño Margarita and said it was the perfect spice balance and I got the Paint it Black Margarita which was a fun twist on a classic cocktail. I have driven past this place for two years and finally stopped by for happy hour (which goes until 6 pm). They have a great, large socially distanced patio that's dog friendly so my friend and I brought both tour pups. Y'all I wanted to give KT 4 stars but honestly the bartenders have been rude to me one too many times (and I worked in service industry so I cut a LOT of slack) and I just can't do it. I came for happy hour (3-6) and really enjoyed the mocktail menu for Dry January. They had a super crowded bar toward the tail end of HH, and I got in line 15 minutes before it ended to get a final round of drinks and burgers. The bartender was watching the CLOCK to end HH and she was not playing around. My friend got her order in at 5:59 and right when I was up, the clock ticked over to 6:00. The bartender snatched up all the HH menus and charged me full price for my round, which I think is just a bit dramatic. I understand they were busy, but she also SAW me standing there for a full 15 minutes and would not budge at all on the HH price. Like why would you not honor the deal for the people in line, it's a simple gesture that garners you a lot of good will. I've had mixed experiences here, but luckily there are plenty of other places in town with similar concepts and friendlier bartenders. read more

Really unique and tasty drinks (both alcoholic and non) with SUCH good food, not to mention the giant, vibey af patio filled with spaced out seating, fans and misters, and so many puppies! This trip we went for brunch and ordered the CBD waffle, friend egg sandwich, Draft Zombie, and frozen mango margarita, and I'd order 'em all again. I've also previously had the Paint it Black Margarita, the avo toast, Jameson Pickleback booze pop, and wings--all actually 10/10. There was only a short wait for the food (but the appetizers/cheese dip came out at the same time as the entree/burger - so mental note to bypass the appetizer if the hope is to get it before). The drinks we got (Black Margarita or something) were not good at all. I also had the cheese dip which I wouldn't recommend or be in a hurry to have again.
