I will preface my review by saying we went here on a Saturday night at 7:30 and they were busy. We arrived on time for our reservation and were seated quickly. We placed our drink order which came out in about 10 minutes. We then asked for some bread and placed our appetizer order, Oysters Rockefeller and fried scallops. The Oysters Rockefeller came out room temperature and the only thing Oyster about them was the shell, all breading and spinach. The fried scallops were also room temperature and the breading had fallen off so the naked little scallops were sitting in a mess of greasy dough. We again asked for some bread. My wife ordered the 20 oz. (?) jumbo King Crab Legs. I ordered the twin lobster tails and fillet combo. Our meals arrived and I again asked for some bread. My wife's 20 oz. of jumbo King Crab Legs were two medium sized legs. The only thing jumbo about them was the price. To their credit, my steak was excellent. The lobster was OK. My side was corn on the cob. The top of the cob was room temperature but the bottom was refrigerator COLD! We finally got our "bread", a piece of room temperature pita cut into 1" squares. Dollar for dollar one of my worst dinning experiences in years. I can only assume there was a staffing problem on this night. WORST FOOD EVER!! We started with a dozen oysters. They were dry, dirty, and not cold. We sent them back. The calamari was mediocre at best and cold. Ordered a pound of king crab, the shells were rubbery so it was difficult to eat. Waste of money. The shrimp/crab bags were also mediocre. The one corn was water logged, the three sausage slices inedible, potatoes fine. All not flavored. Two of us ordered fish, both were gross and flavorless. We would have complained more about our food to our server but she was rarely around. Perhaps waiting for the salad we ordered that never came. I will never come back. My family and I were visiting Chicago for my daughter's 26th birthday. After touring the city, we realized that we were going to miss our reservation but we called and the host happily offered to change our reservation to 9pm instead. We arrived and were promptly seated at a booth in the back of the restaurant. The restaurant had just a few tables in the front, on the front patio and some bar seating also. We also learned that they have patio seating once you go through the back then through the back patio door. We ordered drinks then our server helped us to go over everything on the menu. I wanted one of EVERYTHING!! lol Our order consisted of King Crab legs with potatoes for the birthday girl, snow crab legs with potatoes and some fried soft shelled crab for myself, mussels in a garlic butter white wine sauce , Crab cake sandwich with Cajun corn, and calamari. Everything came out hot, super fresh and flavorful! No one was disappointed with their meal. The only complaint we had was they didn't keep our drinks or the complimentary pita chips refilled but I must admit that they were very close to closing for the day. This place charges a hefty price for king crab legs that had no meat in the legs. I cracked one open in front of my server it was hollow. They brought me some back for replacements. Despite being tucked away on Halsted with other top tier, destroy your wallet, bougie restaurants King Crab is surprisingly really good and offer a great deal on their bar specials. The bar is typically pretty low when it comes to seafood here in Chicago but King Crab does it well both in quality and in pricing. The most impressive deal they have are on their oysters. For 85 cents an oyster you get these gigantic sized oysters (even larger than the oysters I've tried in the east coast) with the purchase of a couple drinks/bottle of wine--it's honestly a superb deal. Everything else is also within the realm of reason when it comes to pricing, the crab legs were decent and the other fish entrees were satisfying and worth the trek. Probably some of the best oysters I've had in the city and got under $1 each it's a steal. Service was good but the food was even better. Great hidden gem in the neighborhood. It's not very fancy and has a dive-y crab shack vibe. However the value on the menu is great and it's been a long running Chicago staple. The interior seating is pretty spacious and they have a backyard patio as well. However I'd recommend reservations especially in the evenings since they get busy sometimes. They have a bar specials menu where you can get discounts on food if you sit at the bar, which is first come first served. The crab / lobster specials are great, especially some of the lobster discounts and the set dinners. They have a pretty crazy wine and drinks menu including entire bottles of the house red or white for $15. Service can be gruff but we've never had any issues with the food. Best oyster bar special in Chicago, fre! If you sit at the bar, oysters are $.85 each, jumbo shrimp are $.95 each, and wings are $.65 each! The special is only if sitting at the bar and there is a 2 alcoholic drink per person minimum rule. Sitting at the bar is essential and gives you access to the specials that bring patrons in, like 75 cent oysters and dollar shrimp. The specialty cocktails are a bit sweet for my taste, but they have a decent selection of very reasonably priced wine. The only dish we tried and didn't enjoy was the clam chowder, which was tasted more like pizza with all the oregano used. KCH doesn't put on airs - what you see is what you get. We went for a birthday dinner and decided to get a bit of a mix to try the menu. They have AMAZING crab deals compared to other restaurants in the area. We did the spicy Cajun butter seafood boil bag with 1 lb of shrimp and 1 lb of snow crab. We added the BOGO free 1 lb of king crab which also came with two sides, we chose broccoli and fries. The food came out pretty quickly and overall, we were pleased! The king crab was steamed and absolutely delicious! Cooked perfectly. I paid 4x as much at Joe's seafood. Would def come back solely for that. The broccoli was steamed, no added butter which i prefer but just noting for those looking for more flavor. The fries weee handcut style and had a coating reminiscent of Arby's curly fries. We asked for ours extra crispy and we enjoyed them. The seafood boil was alright. I'd give it a 3/5. The flavor of the spices didn't transfer so you had to dip everything in the bottom of the bag which is fine but we've def had better flavor for a spicy boil bag. The shrimp were huge and well cooked and the 1lb snow crab was equivalent to two full claw clusters. It was good but not the best we've had. Still a great value for the price! I didn't really like the andouille and the corn had a bit of a fishy taste to me. The potatoes were your typical boil potatoes, I'm never a fan of those so I didn't try them. The service was great. I love supporting small business. In fact, I ordered delivery from her during the top of the pandemic and was slightly disappointed. Another Yelper noted that the deals and specials are great, but the standard menu is overpriced. I agree with that sentiment. Although the food was certainly good and the service was exceptional, I'm not sure I would add this on my list of favorites. There is an all you can eat crab leg special. Please note, this tends to draw the "all you can eat-ers". You know the type. Sweatpants wearing, perpetually sweaty people who give their toddlers iPads so it sounds like you are eating in an arcade. There is a one-star review that accuses this place of not being child friendly. I would argue the opposite, as no one told these parents to invest in earbuds for their crotch goblins. Eight mussels when you can get 30 of them for retail for $6 when they charge you over twice as much without even so much as so much as a piece of French bread to soak up the sauce. Their seafood bowl for two which has two kinds of crab, shrimp, calamari and mussels was delicious. The Caesar salad with chicken was great to share. The lobster tails were cooked just right. We weren't as pleased with the clam chowder but it might have just been an off night. The prawns tasted a little too salty for my tastes, but that's probably just me. I highly recommend the New potatoes as a side: garlicky, and just a little bit of spice, they fit well with the seafood. Also happy to report that they cook the broccoli just right.
