My husband and I are in Toronto to celebrate his birthday. We had such an amazing time here in December that we came back. We never had a bad meal in 17 days! For some reason we didn't try King Taps but on this trip I decided to take him to try their Bang Bang Shrimp because it's one of his favorite dishes. I don't know if he would have loved it here because we never got to eat. After losing my reservation that I painstakingly signed up for a new service to get ... who doesn't have Open Table at this point? ... they quickly offered to put me on a priority list to get the next available table. (But also recommended I try to get in at their sister restaurant ... WTH??) I wanted to stay for the Bang Bang Shrimp but was eventually given a terrible "first available" table between the bar and a set of tables that gets ALL the traffic in the restaurant. (Despite knowing we were celebrating a birthday) We asked to move and meanwhile a MUCH BETTER table was sat for a party of two that we were not offered when we were called. The table they moved us to was highly trafficked by everyone who needed to use the restroom and I could look directly into the kitchen. Not the fun expo kitchen. The hallway and dirty dishes in tubs kitchen. Add that I lost my hat in the frenzy of moving through the crowded restaurant and that the host staff seemed bored at the notion of checking lost and found ... and you have the only bad experience I've had in Toronto. I left sad, annoyed and hungry. I'm curious if I would have enjoyed the food. I'm not sure I'm curious enough to go back. They just didn't seem to care enough if someone who chose to celebrate there had a good time. *one staff member was nice enough to offer us a beer sample while we waited for our table. The ambiance of the main bar area where we were was dim and lively. The room was full of people talking and, while loud, it was never so loud that we had to shout to hear each other. We waited about half an hour for a table for two and, so, had a few beers at the bar. It wasn't easy to squeeze in to order, but we managed it and were served by an absolutely lovely bartender who was friendly and I appreciated the effort she made to get to us (in my experience in these types of bar situations, such an effort is rare). Our waitress was also great. As was the hostess. So, top marks for service here for being professional and attentive without being formal or stuffy. The beer selection is well curated with many familiar choices and a selection of things you won't find in the LCBO or a typical bar or restaurant. They were, unfortunately, out of Braufactum Progusta, the beer I was most eager to try. But these things happen. There was plenty of other things worth trying or revisiting. We ordered a couple of pizzas which were great. Think Neopolitan meets Detroit style. Or maybe call it thin crust Detroit style? I dunno. The crust is crispy, thin, salty, and delicious. The Quatro was melt-in-your-mouth good. The Pomodoro (or whatever it was called again) sauce on the Margherita was spot-on. I would go back to King Taps for beer and pizza in a heartbeat. read more

What's the point of offering so many beers when you won't even allow me to enjoy my first one??? Myself and a buddy visited King Taps just for a quick bite and drink and originally only wanted the bar. We were told by the hostess that the bar was first come first serve but when we arrived at the bar there were no seats and tables. Although we couldn't find a spot around the bar it was only until Sabrina came up to us and offered to sit us at a table. We told her we were only here for a quick stop and told us she had the perfect spot for us that we were very happy at. Very accommodating and very friendly. What are some things I look for in a watering hole? To me, it's the people, the space, and the food! Alcohols tend to be standard and TBH I am not much of a drinker; instead I am much more interested in the obligatory finger food menu since if I'm spending long enough at a bar, sooner or later I'll need something to soak up my vice. Friend and I came without a reservation on a busy Friday after 10pm and were told to sign up for the waitlist as there were no free tables. The bar did not need reservations, but it was so packed that despite the giant wrap-around bar we could not find anywhere to park ourselves. I found the table situation kind of weird, since we were being turned away despite at least 40-50% of the tables on that floor being unoccupied, just with "reserved" signs on them even though it was less than 2 hours from closing time. Though this is not unusual for restaurants to do this - makes the floor easier to manage for staff and channels that "exclusiveness" feeling. Luckily we didn't wait too long and were seated after 10 mins or so. I was pretty happy with the service - polite, happy interactions, and we actually had our food taken off the tab since our server forgot to put in the order at first, resulting in a longer wait. We were very grateful for that level of proactive service and found it very refreshing that this establishment maintained its mantra to provide speedy table service. The calamari ($14) was huge, definitely perfect for sharing. There was pretty heavily battered unfortunately, but with drinks that's not a bad thing. The vibe was nice too - lots of young people in small and large groups, and the space was just big enough to allow some privacy between tables, but also didn't have so much awkward underpopulated areas. There was a live DJ present, but no dancing. Reminded me of senior college years. That being said, perhaps weekend nights are not the best times to host mature corporate discussions at this location. read more

Went there on a Thursday evening to meet with 6 friends. There was a good draft beer selection but it was pricey compared to some other locations in the vicinity. The food was decent, although it should have been extraordinary given the price. Unfortunately the restaurant has 70s & 80s rock blaring from speakers all over the place. Pricing is about right, leaning more on the expensive side for a restaurant of this caliber and location. The margaritas are tasty and well-made and the beer selection is impressive. The food was decent- my favorite was the mushroom pizza, very flavorful and delicious. The entire service from beginning to end was pleasant with the right amount of attentiveness. The music wasn't so loud that we couldn't have a conversation without yelling and the atmosphere was really lively. A very convenient place to come straight after work for drinks. I cannot say more amazing things about King Taps. As someone who works in the financial district, my co-workers and I have become regular patrons to our new favourite post work spot. It has two floors of outdoor patio space that Toronto does not have enough of in the summer. The service here is wonderful and down to earth. The staff and management have been incredibly accommodating and always ensure we're having a great time. For a place that is always incredibly busy from 5-8, I never feel like I am waiting too long for my server, drinks, or food. The food has never disappointed. In particular, the stinging bee pizza is arguably one of the best pizzas I have had in Toronto. It's sweet and spicy and incredibly unique. I have even ordered it for takeout when I'm leaving the office late and having a pizza craving. My favorite appetizers are the Poke appetizer (a refreshing snack if you're just looking for something light) and the Brussel sprouts (the toasted bread crumbs and truffel aioli is a great touch). Finally, the Rocky road Sundae is a great dessert to share with friends if you're feeling something sweet. Just remember- it's a busy place. If you don't get there early after work you may be waiting for a table. In my opinion, that really shouldn't be a point of frustration to anyone, if there is room at the bar take a seat and try a new beer. It's just a confirmation that this is a great spot, and you're waiting to get into a place so many people enjoy. read more

NOISY! If you are looking for a quiet evening out THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. I was hoarse by the end of the evening yelling at my dinner companions. Had the King burger which was OK. The Dulce & Peanut Sundae could have used much more Ducle and once you got past the top layer there wasnt much else left other than Vanilla ice cream. This place was chosen for a birthday dinner by someone seduced by the good reviews but I wouldnt choose it again. On the positive side our server was GREAT and we even gave her an enhanced tip. Had six for lunch, spent almost $400 and all agreed it did not pass the test. $70 bottle of wine only to drink out a small thick short glass. One of the few places downtown that insist on not giving you the choice of drinking wine out of a stem glass. The two pizzas we had were served barely warm. Savannah was our server and she is such a wonderful human being and exceptionally good at her job. She was super attentive and immediately made a great impression on my friends and I. King Taps after 10:00. They close the bottom floor. Drink specials and half priced pizza. All good. They have a DJ but music is not too loud and mix is middle of the road. They have a number of TVs that could be showing sports but they seem intent on showing old low definition reruns of Hulk Hogan wrestling matches. I wish I had a positive comment but unfortunately, I am very disappointed. I had been here before and loved it and my sister and her friends are frequent customers as they work downtown. Both my friend and I ordered the French Rose and thought it was $15. When we ordered them the waitress so matter of fact said the 8 ounces correct and we both said yes not thinking there was another option. We were not told that the 8 ounces was more than $15 and did not notice the menu. We ordered second glasses as well. When the bill came we were shocked to find out that each glass was $24. I have never paid $24 for a glass of wine even in By Mark or Cactus Club or any other high-end places. The waitress should be trained and politely advise us if would like to get a bottle instead. A bottle in this case would be a lot better for us, we could drink more, and our glasses would not be measured sparingly. We would gladly purchase a bottle if we had known for just 4 glasses we paid $100 plus taxes. This was not even a bubbly. I also chose the Chicken creole for my dinner which was accompanied by mash potatoes and broccolini. I requested not to have the mash potatoes and give a little extra broccolini, so the waitress said that would be an extra charge, I agreed of course. I cannot understand why they would have to charge for that. The place and food was good, but the prices of the wine was outrageous and day light robbery. I was really debating whether or not to post this review. I seriously hate giving bad reviews. However, I decided to give this place a second chance and frankly speaking the food here is awesome and the service is great. The music though is unnecessarily loud. It's annoying. There is no point in coming here with your friends or with your coworkers for an after work event because you can't hear a single thing anyone is saying. You basically have to scream and shout to have a conversation or your just sit quietly and stare at each other. I really don't understand the incentive for the music to be this loud. read more

Once again, terrible service with the waitress staff. Went in one evening had a waitress initial J.H I believe. She was a brunette pretty waitress as I can recall. Served us in the far first booth in front of window on second floor. She fought me on wanting to get a full price bottle of wine when she stated I should get the specials and that she was just trying to save me money, but if I didn't that was my fault. She didn't come back to take orders so I had to head to the bar for service. I am so not happy with this service. Every time I come here not with any ill intent its always bad service.
