After putting in an order at Fresh Grill, I wanted to check out the menu here as I was waiting because I'm a sucker for Thai food... and next thing I know I'm ordering a second dinner HAHA. SERVICE: The people here are so friendly! As I entered to look at the menu, I was greeted, and a young man was eager to answer any questions or help us if we needed it. He pointed out a special "pandemic" menu that were combos at a discounted price, and he clarified that they were full-sized entrees (without prompt), which was nice. His enthusiasm is partly what got me to order a second dinner :) Also, when I asked for light ice when I ordered, he confirmed with me if the amount of ice was okay with me, which I did not expect and was appreciated. FOOD: Food came out in ~10 minutes and was pipping hot - it fogged up the inner windows of the car. I got the Pad Thai + 2 Veggie Rolls + White Rice + Thai Tea ($15.28 w/tax). Pretty good deal, especially since the portion of pad thai is more than enough for one person. I liked that they included a sizable piece of lime, peanuts, and bean sprouts (which not all Thai restaurants do unfortunately). There was still something missing in the underlying flavor though (compared to the pad thai I've had in Thailand and Rincome, one of my favorites in the valley) hence the 4/5. I might bump this up when I come back to try other things in the menu though. The veggie rolls were crisped to perfection, and paired nicely with a sweet & sour sauce. Thai Tea was pretty good too! Not too sweet. AMBIENCE: Gives off fancy vibes, especially with the waitress wearing a nice dress/trenchcoat. My fiancé and I ordered their pad see ew, panang curry, and Thai teas. The pad see ew was very salty. The panang curry had a sour taste to it. I thought perhaps they put lemongrass in it but there was no peanut flavor whatsoever. The Thai teas were mostly milk and had very little tea. The service was also poor. I tried Kinnara Thai in Van Nuys and it was one of the best experiences I've had! Chef Kevin and his team were so nice and accommodating. My favorites were the Filet Mignon Skewer, Rib Eye Crying Tiger, and the Tamarind Shrimp. The Filet Mignon Skewer had a perfect balance of char and umami, and when combined with the curry sauce, it feels like a party in your mouth. The Rib Eye Crying Tiger was beautifully presented and the ribeye was perfectly cooked. The flavors weren't overpowering and kept me wanting more. The Tamarind Shrimp was so juicy and crispy. The burst of tamarind and garlic definitely made this my favorite dish of the night. All of the dishes looked exquisite with elegant garnishes, elevating the experience. Food : I've been coming to this place for YEARS! My dad and I love to go to Thai restaurants in SoCal and put them on a sort of tier list. We haven't found one that beats Kinnara yet! My favorite to order is the "Spicy Hot Basil" (garlic, bell peppers, basil, and I like getting it with fried tofu)! I get it every single time I come here. We bring our family and friends visiting from out of town here, and they all love it! Service: The staff here are always so sweet! We usually come throughout the week and they are so friendly and sweet! We've never had a bad experience with them. We always make small talk and talk about golf. The lady working here talked about her trip to Morocco and showed us pictures of her trip. They're always so sweet and sometimes add a little extra in our bags when we get food to-go. Ambiance: The decor is so beautiful and is always very clean. They have a modern take with some elements of Thai culture, which I love! They have music playing in the background, but not to the point that you can't hear and have to yell. Overall, if I could give this place 100 stars, I would! We found this place in Vegas and were so glad to hear they had one in SoCal. We'll keep coming here at least once every two or three weeks like we have been for the past few years. I really enjoyed the hot basil chicken, it was flavorful and cooked well. The restaurant is fairly empty at lunch time therefore the service was great. Where do I start!? Firstly I must highlight how consistent this establishment is. I've been here quite a few times and I have never been disappointed. I always order the pineapple fried rice, removing the shrimp, & adding steamed broccoli--it's my favorite.! Many Thai food restaurants have this dish but no one does it like Kinnara! My most recent visit, I brought my mom and she ordered the beef fried rice--I never tried anything other that what I get (PFR), but there consistently in service and delivery & was certain they would not disappoint. My mom, loved it! I'm sure that anything you order from here, you will not be disappointed. The size portions are pretty big, & the condiments are so essential. It's a bit pricey, though, so take care of your wallet . . . ## Environment This restaurant is very small; about 1/3 of it is a small bar counter, and the rest is a few tables facing a large glass window wall. The decor is kind of simple, and overall it's got a nice kind of vibe for a date. Parking is *typically* pretty easy in the plaza lot. ## Food 1. Crying Tiger (Ribeye Steak) ($25): This comes grilled and sliced, served with a sour, spicy, salty, and slightly sweet sauce with some veggies cut tiny (I think onions and some other things). The sauce is actually *really* good -- it definitely is what elevates the dish to amazing. Without the sauce, the steak is still really good (great meat flavor + chargrill flavor), but with the sauce, this dish becomes a go-to every time. 2. Keylime Seabass ($40): I actually didn't like this. The price is really high for the portion, and it was overwhelmingly sour from the lime. 3. Mushroom & Tofu Terrific ($16): My wife is vegetarian so I gotta order some stuff for her, and this is one of my favorites. It's a salty mushroom and tofu dish, but it's absolutely amazing! The sauce is delicious, and the I like the texture of the mushroom and tofu. It's a great portion for its price, too. Highly recommend! 4. Shrimp Panang Pumpkin Curry ($16-$18): So I've actually had the shrimp version and the vegetarian version (exact same thing without shrimp). The shrimp doesn't really absorb the curry flavor, so it's basically the same curry. The flavor of the curry is amazing! I personally don't like pumpkin, but I'll eat around the pumpkin and my wife eats the pumpkin. The shrimp are large and tasty. If you want to order a curry, I highly recommend trying this one. The portion is good for its price. 5. Crispy Hainan Chicken Garlic Rice ($19?): This one is absolutely amazing in terms of portion, texture, and taste. You get a deep fried chicken sliced kind of like a chicken katsu. It's served on a bed of very garlicky rice. It's served with a sweet and sour sauce, and a light soup. My experience at Kinnara has always been positive. On my last visit I noticed there was a 15% service charge added to the bill for a party of 2. The bill also provided a suggested tip of 18-25% on top of the 15% bogus surcharge. There was no mention about the 15% surcharge on the menu, posted or even verbally disclosed. When I asked what was this for their response was "yes, it's automatically added to all bills" Feel free to raise your prices, disclose your added % but don't do it secretly. I wish a ordered this dish with rice, and slathered the sauce all over the rice.. next time... -Absolutely Diet Clean Meal- exactly what it says... if clean eating is your diet then this is for you. I couldn't even complain. - Green Bean Chicken- This dish again was super tasty. the green beans where cooked till perfection. Still with a crisp, not over cooked and soggy like other asian places. Unless you know exactly where you're going (and how many of us really do?) you'd pass Kinnara by. In fact, if you see where it's located you may want to anyway. Say it fast and it sounds like kinehora (a Yiddish curse in reverse). Kinnara sits in a tawdry strip mall better suited to a tawdry strip club. You know, the kind that shows up in every "B" hit man thriller as filler. But it's all part of the ambient atmosphere. You really do get the feel of being in the seedy side of Bangkok.(Which describes most of Bangkok). Or you could hang with the dudes hangin' out side next door at the smoke and spice shop. Hookah and Dukah. There is a congregation of characters loitering outside in Hezbollah La Land. It looks like out takes from Fauda. There is a Vietnamese joint there too. (Batta Bun, Batta Banh) and what goes on there? Finally, a few doors down you will find Toto's Nigerian Cuisine, in case you're looking to get your Spicy Goat Head fix, fixed. So, you've parked, scoped out the tenants, and wondered if you chose wisely. You have. Now wander in and be delighted that Kinnara is spotless, nicely decorated, and inviting. Dancing ceramic Monks adorn the long wall and beckon you to enrich your life, at least for dinner. Miss Thailand greets you and you follow that sashaying sway all the way to your table. The comfortable long Bar will take you back to that late, lazy, long afternoon in Bangkok's Hyde and Seek Bar, or maybe make you want to go. An out of character Reggae Loop is good for eating to the beat or helping to flip the table quicker. The Staff: Service with a smile and happy to help. The Vibe: "Van Nuys" I said, as I looked around. And who goes there? Those who know, go. And the rest of the hoodies who don't want to slog down the 5 and then spend hours looking for a parking spot at Hoy Ka in Thai Town. The Bar Program: It's full. Have an icy Singha and don't bother deciding on a cocktail. It's Thai chow. It's a beer. The Food: Now you're in for a treat. I expected the Angus Beef Jerky with Chili Vinegar Salsa to be simply a mystery chew to chew till you're blue. Nope. Delectable strips of real Rib Eye expertly jerkified and not petrified. It was a wonderful companion to my cold brew. I had to do Rocks, Paper, Scissors with my guest for the last piece. The Yun Woon Sen, a mound of Shrimp bits and minced Chicken mixed with Glass Noodles in Lime Chili Dressing came as advertised. It was all integrated into a haphazard scattering of Romaine leaves so that the main ingredients had to be exfil'd from the greenery. Eating slower is healthier anyway. So, once you get all that sorted out, you have another nice dish to poke at until the main event. Caveat: Everything comes out of the kitchen in a heated rush. So, best to order in stages. Therefore, unless you have a JetsuiteX to catch for Vegas, ride the brakes and order a dish or two at a time. Drunken Noodles is just as disappointing here as everywhere else. Slightly over cooked wide thick Rice Noodles, with a hint of Chili Garlic Sauce mixed in along with some decent Beef Bites. Over all it was a mushy mound (heat lamp exposure?) and simply took up valuable real estate. But undaunted it was on to the magic. The Panang Curry with Pork was truly regal and perhaps the best version of this ubiquitous dish in town. The Coconut Curry Sauce was rich and as balanced as a ball on a Seal's nose. This is not to be missed and the main reason you should make the effort to go here. So no sayonara to Kinnara. I'm going back. read more

Amazing food, amazing service. Don't let the little commercial center fool you, this place is a must try. The staff is friendly and extremely attentive. The food is absolutely incredible. We got the soft shell crab and shrimp garlic fried rice. It came with a green sauce that was a beautiful accompaniment to the dish. Absolute must try. We also tried the yellow curry noodles with chicken. Although we originally thought this would be a pad Thai esque dish, we were presently surprised it was closer to ramen with a yellow curry broth. Lastly, there are several reviews commenting on the added service charge. If you are not willing to tip for incredible service, great food, and a wonderful experience then perhaps you should consider cooking at home instead of eating out. This was one of the Thai restaurants I would frequent a few times a week. Then I just haven't been back in a while. Located in a strip mall. Came for dinner yesterday as I was craving Thai. Everything stills looks the same. Some of the former waiter/waitress have prob moved on as these were new to me. The menu has quite an impressive list of dishes. Your typical Thai dishes and more elaborate dishes created my the chef. I did notice that prices has gone up. Also, it is a little more pricey for certain dishes versus other Thai restaurants. They do offer happy hour which is good. I tend to stick to what I like. My favorite was the beef stew noodle. Which has been taken off the menu a while back. Maybe that's why I haven't been back in such a long time. Either way, it was nice to come back. They also offer pho, not the original Vietnamese way but it will do. One of my other favorite dishes is the mandalas bay curry (seafood curry), the rack of lamb and the mango salmon. These are from the specialty menu. Good food and great service.
