I love chicken wings. For part three of my weekly office lunch, I decided to get some from Kitava. Our delivery arrived via Caviar on Friday, June 22nd around 12:30pm. I got the Chicken Wings with Ranch and Green Onion: 6 pieces, Pasture-raised chicken wings, tossed with paleo ranch dressing and green onions, over a bed of arugula ($6). I adore greens, so I was happy the dish came with a mini salad underneath. The wings were tasty. Lots of flavor. But they were really small. I don't think an order would fill you up as they are not very meaty. I guess that's what you get with pasture raised chickens? They're skinnier, so less meat? Maybe I got my hopes too high looking at other people's pictures and reviews, but I got a mix and match bowl with pulled pork, avocado, and cauliflower rice. The first two were decent, but I thought the cauliflower rice was going to be dry. However, there was so much liquid in it, and it kept sloshing around and getting the avocado and pork wet as well. I had the local special which consisted of pulled pork and plantains over rice with salsa and it was delicious! They have a bit of a healthy trend here so the dish could have used a little bit more salt but they have Himalayan salt on the table so it tastes just perfect after you season it yourself. The pork was juicy and tender, the plantains were delicious, but what actually made the dish taste extra good was the hot sauce like salsa on the table. It's lightly spicy with a nice sweet and sour kick and it really elevates the dish and makes it taste that much better. I wasn't in a rush to eat lunch when I came in, but when the nice waitress and I both noticed that my food still wasn't ready despite having waited for half an hour, she gave me a side of plantains on the house. :) I usually don't eat fried stuff, but those plantains tasted B O M B. What I loved more, though, was the chicken. The breading was thick and crispy, and the chicken meat was juicy and tender. However, the cauliflower rice tasted way too overwhelming. Imo, there was way too much turmeric and ginger for me to enjoy the cauli-rice on its own. But when paired with the chicken, it tasted a little better. Overall, I love this place, because it's a healthy, fast-casual joint conveniently located across the 16th and Mission Bart station. The picture I am attaching is the way my order looked upon receiving it. While the food pictures on the delivery service I used looked amazing, this is how the food actually looks in practice. I threw away the avocado, and proceeded to eat the rest of the meal. Shortly after I found out that none of the things I ordered were very palatable. I ate about a quarter of it and then threw the rest away. Each element in the meal had bitter a bitter taste, perhaps because the bitterness and flavor of the kale prevailed over the taste of every other ingredient, becoming some kind of a very bitter kale stew. The smell was not good either, and it came with a minimum amount of salt. Adding salt did not help. The food came with some seasoning that was not very appetizing. The salmon was on the dry side, and while it was edible, it did not taste right. EDIT: I have updated my review. I thought I tasted butter in the food, but it seems it must have been oil plus cumin and turmeric. read more

Like most new eateries in the city, it's not cheap but not insanely expensive either. A bowl and a brownie was about $25 including tip. Not an everyday type of place I can afford to go to for lunch but Kitava is THE place to go to when you're seeking a tasty meal that's makes you feel good about yourself. They also offer delivery through UberEATS, DoorDash, and GrubHub. I ordered at the counter with the very friendly cashier and my meal was ready within minutes. For lunch, I choose the Cuban Bowl ($14) w/ heritage pork shoulder, plantains, avocado, kale slaw, cilantro-garlic mojo sauce, cauliflower rice & sunflower risotto (+$2): http://bit.ly/2mnkLu4. This was a very filling bowl with a good ratio of proteins and fiber. The pork shoulder was fantastic - slow cooked and very tender. Much better than nearby Media Noche's rendition. Mojo sauce added a great acidity and the plantains had a nice caramelized sweetness. I love heat and each table had a bottle of housemade tangy habanero sauce. It wasn't too hot so don't worry. I wasn't too keen on the cauliflower rice (very cabbagey with a bitter aftertaste) and sunflower risotto (like oatmeal). They do have pink Himalayan sea salt on each table that will probably help neutralize the cauliflower rice but I didn't use it. Personally, I like a more neutral flavor you get with regular rice but that's just my AZN side. Next time, I would just do all kale slaw or the white rice & beans option. I had the strawberry pistachio kombucha which was pretty good, but lacked enough carbonation. We started with the plantains, brussels, and taro chips. The plantains were superb and the sauce they were served with was unbelievable. The brussels were really good too! The taro chips with avo mash were nice, but I think the avo mash could use some lime (maybe I'm just used to guacamole). I had the curry bowl with chicken and it was very very good as well! I ordered two of the Sesame Chicken Bowls (one with cauliflower rice and one original), as well as two Sweet Plantains Bowls (one with pork and the other without). Everything was absolutely delicious. My only regret is I wished I had gotten the pork with both bowls -- definitely next time though. I rarely leave delivery meals uneaten - but I was pretty disappointed in my most recent Kitava delivery order - that I did just that. I'm not sure if it's a late night order thing - but both of my dishes were "off" tonight. The brussels sprouts were not pleasant to eat. Not one of them was crispy and there was even a bitter taste to them. They also didn't come with the aioli, which they typically come with. The pesto and zucchini noodles dish leaked through the package - and on my floor upon delivery. It had more flavor and a better texture than the brussels sprouts - but it still lacked oomph. It had me yearning to make my own pesto sauce. Wait: No wait at 12pm at the counter on a Friday Atmosphere: Modern and organic-looking seats and wooden tables. I guess the word to Menu: A lot of creative veggie and nut-forward options! They have super yummy choices anywhere from Cuban Bowls, Meatloaf, Salads, to Asian bowls and Zoodles! I also appreciate that they do have meat. I definitely need my meat protein fix, but came with a vegan friend. Got my chicken on the side and we were able to share our food to try everything! Food: My friend and I both shared the Cuban Bowl and the Zoodles with Cashew Cream Sauce. Both were super delicious! The Cashew Cream was very creamy and tasty over the textured Zoodles though there was absolutely no dairy. I love and appreciate things that are well seasoned even when it's supposed to be "healthy" (why sacrifice taste for health when you can have both?!). The Cuban Bowl was both hearty, filling, and light. The avocado added some needed creaminess, and the bowl itself was also well-seasoned. I also surprisingly enjoyed the plantains in it, which were not dry and starchy. Service: Standard order at the front service, but the workers are pretty friendly.
