He took gentle care of me as we assessed my injuries, and was enormously reassuring. If he lends a fraction of that kind of care and attentiveness to his restaurant management, food preparation and service I am certain it will be exquisite. I don't have much to say. I'm visiting from Seattle and there isn't very many Turkish restaurants in Seattle so eating here was very pleasant. Very quaint and cozy place. Staff was great and food was delicious. My friend wanted to celebrate her boyfriends promotion and he loves Turkish food so it was only fitting to come here. I ordered the beyti: Adana style kebabs. It was so good and just the perfect amount of food. The sauce really made the dish though. I was also able to try my friends steel head kababs and lamb. Both of those were yummy as well. I liked this place as Troya, but it actually improved under its new guise. Yes, isn't that great? It happens sometimes, not often, but it did, I think. The funny thing is that I was reading my old review of Troya from 2009 (review: http://bit.ly/1DL0w6O), and y'know what? I ordered the exact same thing. I guess I'm not that adventurous when it comes to ordering at more exotic restaurants than Chipotle. Well, I came here after work thinking a new Turkish spot would be worth trying in a city that's bereft of them, A La Turca and Tuba aside. The place was already getting busy at around 6PM, and I squeezed myself into a table for two next to a party of foreign-accented girls who worked as professional models. For exactly whom, I didn't quite catch from my incompetent eavesdropping. Anyway, the menu appeared contained but purposeful with alluring Turkish dishes that made it difficult for me to decide. So I guess in a subconscious act of safety, I ordered the $9 Zucchini Fritters, four of them, puffy and crunchy with parsley, mint, feta cheese and yogurt sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/1ew0Bof). They were much lighter than I expected, which was a good thing since I know eating deep-fried food will lead me on the road to indigestion hell. When you cut into them, it was pure zucchini probably with a bit of egg and quite delicious, much better than the zucchini cakes I ordered last time. It was also a good thing the yogurt sauce came since I was at a loss as to what to do with the softly toasted pita bread that came out as a complimentary appetizer. Started off our meal with the zucchini fritters and feta cheese cigars. The zucchini fritters were excellent - crispy outside and soft, shredded zucchini inside. The yogurt sauce also had good flavor and paired well with the fritters - I didn't taste any mint though (as advertised). Next came the feta cheese cigars. They were definitely unique! It was basically feta cheese mixed with parsley, wrapped in filo dough and lightly fried served with a side of honey and crushed pistachios. The sweet/savory combination worked pretty well in my opinion but you really needed to be pretty heavy handed with the honey and pistachios to impart the sweet/nutty flavors into the crispy cheese cigars. For our entrees, we opted to split 3 plates family style. My runaway favorite was the Turkish style beef stew. The eggplant puree was smoky in flavor, but smooth in texture. It definitely paired well with the slow cooked beef, which was just fall apart tender and not gummy at all. Sweet carrots and a creamy, tangy dollop of lebni tied this dish all together. Second favorite was the chicken guvec. I was bewildered by how tender the chicken was. Advertised as a crispy chicken leg, I was speechless when I tried to cut through and found it just falling off the bone (but it still had a very crispy skin - how?!) It came accompanied by eggplant (cut into discs), parsnips, and raisins. Flavors were pretty earthy for this dish and had a nutty undertone. Last but not least, we also shared the lamb loin kebabs. The lamb loin pieces were not too gamey, which I definitely appreciated. However, the basmati rice wasn't as good as I've had at other establishments. Despite all the dishes not being too big, they were all deceptively filling. We ended our meal with the kunefe which is a must order in my opinion! We picked up the food through a window just to the right of the door. It was super easy and involved zero contact. Everything was very tidy and clean. The food was packed thoughtfully and survived the trip well. It almost didn't make it because it smelled so good but we resisted. We had the cauliflower appetizer, salmon kebab , chicken kebab, and veggie moussaka. All were great. The cauliflower and moussaka are always amazing and tasted just as good at home. The kebabs are great standards that were cooked just right. I highly recommend eating from here during covid. It is such a treat. read more

This is a great place to sit if the weather is nice. The outdoor seating is so pleasant, especially if you are there at happy hour. We shared a bottle of wine. They have both Turkish and California wines. We were not adventurous that day and stuck to a Napa vintage. The waiter was great and offered a decanter after my husband remarked on the youth of the wine. The appetizers are tasty. So are the desserts. I was excited to try moussaka for the first time and found this restaurant offering takeout, so I gave it a shot. Given the prices, I was assuming I'd get bread, perhaps a condiment or maybe utensils. Unfortunately, I received a very small portion of food- around 6-7 ounces, with roughly a cup of rice. I had turkish food for the first time here in this cute little restaurant and really enjoyed the experience. I am a vegetarian and had so many options to choose from, especially from the appetisers/small plates. For the starters we ordered Hummus, haydari, muhammara with pita bread and zucchini fritters. My girl and I recently moved into the Inner Richmond neighborhood and have been trying all the Clement street restaurants. Today we happened into Kitchen Istanbul and were overwhelmed by quality and service above all others in the neighborhood. Chef Emrah not only greeted us at the door but insured our dishes were personally inspected before delivery to our table. The lamb kabobs my girl ordered were cooked to perfection. The flavor of rice was equally fantastic. My moussaka was the best ever. The mozzarella/béchamel sauce arrived bubbling and full of flavor. At the end of our dinner we were served Kunefe. However, with a few key misses, there's room for improvement, especially regarding wines and value of the meal. We arrived at 5:30 PM on a Friday to an empty restaurant. Service was friendly, attentive, and effective, if a bit casual for the prices charged. Ambiance is warm and enveloping, wrapping you in a metaphorical Turkish blanket. Food is generally good to excellent. Standouts include: Lentil soup (4/5): superb flavor with complementary toppings. However, the portion is too small, even given the $8 price tag. Arugula Salad (5+/5): I kid you not, this salad was the standout of the evening, just bursting with flavor. Easily the best arugula salad I've ever had. Even given the small portion size for the price ($13), it's 5-stars. Moussaka (4.5/5): Rich, beefy, and earthy. Would have liked the flavors to come together a bit better, which I'm guessing they would have if I'd taken some home to have next day as leftovers. $25 Braised Beef (4/5): Looked amazing in pictures. I was most excited to try this dish. It's very good - succulent and tender; but isn't as well-balanced as I'd hoped. Predominant flavor is smoke. $27 Kunefe (5/5): My first time trying this amazing dessert and I think I'm in love! Doesn't land as heavily as you'd think, given the cheese and sugar involved. $12 There were some disappointments though... Turkish Coffee (2/5): Ridiculously small amount of coffee for the price ($6) and we actually preferred the standard espresso. Meatballs (3/5): Solid, but wanted more flavor. More a patty than a "ball". $14 Cauliflower (3/5): Fine, but nothing different or special and would not get again for $14. Wines (2.5/5): I was excited to try some Turkish/eastern european wines to pair, but was generally disappointed. The Hayziyiannis Assyrtiko was fine as a minerally, dry white (Santorini, $14 glass) but the Pasaeli Karasakiz (Turkey, $13 glass) was a big disappointment, coming off as unbalanced and bitter. The Monastery Tvrdos Vranac (Bosnia, $15 glass) was our favorite of the night, with bold and balanced flavors, pairing well with the heavier, meaty entrees. All told, we spent $205 for two people, all-in. Seemed like $175 or so would have been more appropriate, so we left feeling like we had overpaid, a not-uncommon feeling in today's SF dining scene. Given that some of the food is quite good, I'd advise ordering myriad mezes, splitting an entree, and bringing your own bottle of wine to avoid some of the questionable wine values on the menu. Went for a late lunch with a friend while visiting the City and as a native, he highly recommended this place for Mediterranean food. We started off with the falafel appetizer and we enjoyed the crunchiness of the falafel balls with the plentiful yogurt sauce. For our entrees, I had the vegetarian moussaka and although I thought it was tasty, it was definitely a lot heavier than I imagined it would be. It had melted cheese baked in with roasted vegetables. After I ate a good half portion of it, the flavor profile got a bit monotonous. Very pricey but delicious! Some dishes I really enjoyed more than others but nothing was horrible. If this is authentic food from Istanbul, I'm putting the country on my travel-and-eat list. Hopefully food will be more affordable there too :) The dishes: Zucchini fritters: A great starter, not too greasy for a fried dish. Grilled Haloumi cheese: Light and squeaky like fresh cheese curds from Wisconsin with a pleasant smoky undertone from the grill. I would get this dish again. Half moon sardines: Lovely presentation, strong flavor. Recommended for sardine fans. Me, not so much. Chicken kebabs: Meh. Hard to mess this up. I was not a big fan of the chickpeas served with the kebabs. Beyti: IMHO the Turkish response to sushi. Elegant display and equally impressive to the taste buds. We came in at around 8 PM on a Friday night, and was seated almost immediately. The waiter brought over water for the table and cup of crispy lavash for us to munch on. We ordered the muhammara, which is a walnut and red pepper dip. The muhammara had a nice, smooth texture like hummus, and was not too spicy. I wish they included more pita, because I wanted to keep eating! We also had the lamb moussaka, which is a casserole-like dish topped with cheese. I appreciate that Kitchen Istanbul does not go overboard with the cheese--it's perfectly balanced with the meat and sauce underneath. Lastly the zucchini fritters--a crispy outer and soft, shredded zucchini insider, with a light yogurt sauce to balance out the oil (although I would not consider anything here to be greasy) The desserts looked amazing, but we were so full that we couldn't fit it in. I would think again before making a reservation here using the Open Table app. I had planned a dinner with friends (as I previously raved about this restaurant and had come many times before) for 1 month out. The app, which has a very small area for date and time, did not take the future date and defaulted to the day of, which I had no intention of going as I had previous plans made 4 months ago to go to airport. My friend has the same experience. Open Table registered the wrong date had me as a no show and the restaurant charged me $250! I called the owner to explain the mistake, and he didn't budge on any ground to meet me even half way. Open Table doesn't have customer service so they will do nothing. The restaurant doesn't take phone calls for reservations or walk-ins so its a singular policy and very strict. Not worth my business given this kind of response to a good customer, who always shows up. Think twice before you book it! read more

We took my father-in-law here yesterday for a Father's Day lunch and had a great experience. Unique, interesting, and delicious food, with lots of vegetarian options. Attentive service. Nice, bright, comfortable space. Convenient location. My 90-yo FIL, who is not vegetarian, proclaimed the veggie moussaka to be "out of this world" and "even better than with meat!" It's somewhat unsettling to see a restaurant with the name Kitchen Istanbul listed under "one of the top 10 Greek restaurants of SF" by Time Out magazine. Even though, the restaurant is also listed in the Michelin Guide, I kept trying to confirm the restaurant's Turkish credentials (given the Greek-Turk rivalry) with the helpful server. Blessed by an intimate familiarity and love of Turkish cuisine, I could pose questions on their menu that must have made me seem like an annoying know-it-all: "Do you have Kazandabi?... No? Then, the Almond pudding? I'm forgetting the name." She asked me to wait for a bit and after conferring with a fellow server said, "no, we don't have Sutlac". I pounced on that immediately: "no. Sutlac is your rice pudding", to which she nodded. "I'm asking about Keskul." She shook her head again. But, cheerfully offered "you'll like the Kunafe". Ok, done deal. I didn't need to worry about the meal, the food is excellent throughout, and while i didn't try their wines, there's an excellent selection of affordable Turkish wines that most customers would not be familiar with. I asked about the Beyti, one of the restaurant's strengths, but ultimately ended up going with the Chicken Kebab with chickpeas, to the delight of the server. Now, you can find chicken kebabs everywhere including at food trucks and hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but only a top restaurant can balance juiciness and char as brilliantly as at Kitchen Istanbul. And, the Kunafa? Magnificent. Possibly best-in-class in the versions I've had in the U.S. (I say this while noting that the best Kunafa is from Nablus in Palestine). Kunafa isn't a dish one can pull off easily. You need to get the right texture: not soggy from the syrup, nor too crunchy. You need the right sweetness, most Kunafas turn out to be saccharine sweet. You need the right cheese: texture and sweetness. Portion size needs consideration: even the best Kunafas are meant to be shared because economics (made to order preparation) require the size be profitable. The temperature needs to be just right: not too hot to burn the roof of your mouth, nor lukewarm to not be able to appreciate the kataifi and cheese textures. Kitchen Istanbul brought together all these elements of a great Kunafa with pure perfection. Kitchen Istanbul is a few hundred feet away from the perennially crowded Burma Superstar. Given that the prices at Burma Superstar can sneak up on you, and the quality of the cooking at Kitchen Istanbul, I'm really surprised that they aren't busier than they were during my visit. Kitchen Istanbul - Organic "Rose" chicken kebab - Greek Near Me - San Francisco, California

Mediterranean starts becoming all too similar after awhile... but Turkish. Cue the ooo's and ahhh's. Kitchen Istanbul is more pricey than what I had expected, probably because I tend to assume that most everything in the Richmond is local mom-and-pop owned. However the service was rather upscale, including a change of plates and utensils between the apps and entrees. Also, the ambiancey decor with exotic touches like the cast iron chandelier and theme of regal red nearly seemed like we were whisked away to Istanbul for dinner. True to the restaurant name, the menu focuses on Turkish food that spans along the gradient to Greek influences. The descriptions are helpful, and our server was also very knowledgeable. Some dishes are also offered at Kokkari Estiatorio, and it's fascinating to note each place's own interpretation. PART I | THE APPETIZERS (+) Complimentary chips: Interesting seasoning, good snack to nom on. (+++) Zucchini fritters ($10): I don't know if I've been conditioned to like this dish ever since my childhood days of proclaiming my favorite food to be the fried zucchini from Black Angus. In any case, I loved Kitchen Istanbul's version which is surprisingly light, especially for fried food. The panko-like coating was exceptionally thin, bringing the focus to the interior of ever-so-lightly creamy shredded zucchini with overlaying subtleties from the yogurt, feta, parsley, and mint. The bite size is also perfect for enjoying the interplay of textures and nuances without concern of the zucchini spewing out. (vs Kokkari: tie. Both are thoughtful, though Kokkari's aesthetics may be the winner) (++) Feta cheese cigars ($12): (They look more like Chinese spring rolls than cigars in my opinion. Or maybe that's just because of my upbringing :P ) Possibly the tastiest rendition of feta cheese I've ever tried. The contrasting mixture of briny soft cheese, nutty pistachios, sweet honey, and the crispy exterior all come together in a remotely cheese-and-crackers-like concept. PART II | THE ENTREES (+++) Moussaka ($24): Mmm, Turkish lasagna. Though cheesy casseroles tend to be fool-proof, Kitchen Istanbul's moussaka was carefully tuned with a perfect (and picture-perfect) coating of burnt cheese and aromatic, fragrant dimensions of the spices and bechamel. The eggplant was a full-bodied yet light addition that helped to balance out the heaviness. (vs Kokkari: Kitchen Istanbul's is more flavorful) (+/-) Beyti ($24): Maybe it's my own fault for a cursory glance at the menu to scout out a kebab dish and ignoring the lavash wrap part, but I think I found this dish least impressive among what we ordered. The lamb and beef kebab was rather dry, and the wrap pieces were somewhat bland overall with the heavy tomato sauce was a bit out of place and didn't really bring out flavors of anything. On the plus side, the presentation looks unique. (++) Grilled grass-fed lamb chops ($36): Wow, this dish is serious. The lamb chops are grilled to a caramelized crisp, making for roasty and umami goodness with hints of fruity from the pomegranate molasses and earthy from the accompaniments of mint relish and potato/celery root puree (though it was predominantly potato). (vs Kokkari: Kitchen's was quite mind-blowing; Kokkari was just more mind-blowing) Among 4 moderately hungry people, the 2 apps and 3 entrees left us stuffed and without room for dessert. The food is more filling than you expect (with all the grilled meats and cumulative yogurt sauces), so I suggest planning ahead of time if you want to try their popular kunefe dessert. That being said, I think it's best to come in a group so that you can try more dishes. Tips: *Street parking can be tricky but isn't impossible, especially if you avoid peak hours *They take reservations (though not too busy on weekday nights) *Windows may be open for a breezy plein air vibe. I liked the vibes, but it worsened boo's allergies TL;DR: Pricey, but worthwhile, at least for a try. Put another way, reasonable price for a faux trip to Istanbul. read more

As someone who has lived his entire life in Turkey and loves Turkish food, I give this fantastic restaurant 5 stars, just because 6 stars is not a thing. No I'm not friends with the owner. No, I don't write an extra "fluffy" review because they serve Turkish food. Believe me there are some Turkish restaurants in Bay Area and SF that you HAVE TO avoid. But Kitchen Istanbul is your best option if you want to have authentic and delicious Turkish food. Their Beyti is way too good, their soup never disappoints and, to the individual harshly critizing the staff, they are very friendly. And of course their Kunefe. If I wasn't going for a professional review, I would simply describe it as "Omg omg omg itssss like sooooooo yummmy ". No, seriously though their Kunefe is sublime. It's the perfect way to compliment your meal with a cup of tea and call it a night (Shout out to you party animals that can still go to Audio after eating that Kunefe and dance your pants of) Kitchen Istanbul, nothing short of a miracle and should be your only destination if you're thinking about eating decent Turkish food.
