My husband is Turkish so we had to try this place out for our anniversary! First off the service was great, our waitress was very sweet, attentive and answered all our questions easily. For the food we got the feta cheese cigars which were my favorite, they were amazing, super crispy on the outside, hot and delicious inside. I loved dipping them in the honey syrup and pistachios, the sweet/savory combo put them over the top. We also got the köfte (grilled meatballs) which were delicious, super flavorful and juicy. And the grilled halloumi was was great as a fresh, hot weather app. For the main dish my husband has been craving beyti since he came to the US and he said the flavor was great, a B+ dish. Only thing lacking was the flavor/texture of the lavash which we both found to be slightly soggy. (I thought it was great, but have never had to before so had nothing to compare it to!) For dessert we shared the Kunefe, which as an American might be one of the weirdest yet most delicious things I've ever eaten.The outside is crunchy and delicious dough, then you cut into the middle for this rich, sweet, just amazing cheesy goodness inside. Wow, my mind was blown. My husband said it was definitely one of the best Kunefes he's had, even from some top restaurants in Turkey. We drank Turkish coffees with dessert which were great and the one Turkish food/beverage I'm very familiar with as I make it often at home and their's was just right, with the perfect amount of foam on top and sweetness. The food is absolutely delicious! My hubby and I had the trio of hummus, haydari, and muhammara with pita bread for appetizer and shared the grilled grass-fed lamb loin kebabs, served with basmati rice, paprika butter, and pistachios. The lamb was cooked incredibly well, very soft and tasty. For dessert, we had the Kunefe with Turkish coffee! It was mouthwatering yummy! The vibe of the restaurant was very authentic. They were playing traditional Turkish music which set a beautiful mood and environment. So glad Kitchen Istanbul is open again for indoor dining!!! This is one of our favorite spots. They had limited indoor seating, took everyone's temperatures when we arrived, and had the windows open, so it felt very safe. The food is delicious as ever, and they have a huge wine shop to choose from. Plenty of gluten free options available. We had the halloumi cheese, olives, cauliflower, and kofte meatballs for appetizers, and moussaka, lamb chops, and braised beef for dinner. Everything was excellent. I was so excited to learn about a new Turkish restaurant opening in the Richmond! Kitchen Istanbul is tastefully designed. Clean cut interior with contrasting colors on the walls, reds and blacks. Black and white photography, large black chandeliers, and curved wooden chairs. The aesthetics of Kitchen Istanbul beautifully captured a Turkish flavor. Here are the items my party ordered: -Turkish Lentil Soup -Feta Cheese Cigars with Pistachios and Honey Syrup -Moussaka -Lamb Chops with Cauliflower, Eggplant and Basmati Rice Unfortunately, the Lentil Soup was on the bland side. Could have used something additional to give it an extra kick of flavor. The Feta Cheese Cigars are always a safe bet for anyone new to Mediterranean cuisine. They are crispy cheese appetizers which you dip them in honey then into the mound of ground up pistachios. Could probably eat a whole plate of these alone! Moussaka is variety vegetable dish topped with a oozy melted cheese top. The main event...the lamb chops...were EXCELLENT! As a Turkish specialty, I always expect the absolute best lamb dishes. Kitchen Istanbul did a great job with these 5 little chops. I was sad that Kitchen Istanbul didn't offer one of my favorite dishes, Manti. Great Turkish cuisine with just some dishes falling short of expectations. Among the small plates and appetizers, the trio of hummus/haydari/muhammara paired with fresh and nearly paper thin pita was excellent - each of the dips was executed well and I especially loved the soft sweetness in the muhammara. From the garden, my fiance and I devoured the crispy brussies that were thoroughly coated in mildly spicy seasoning. For entrees, my fiance's lamb loin kebabs were excellent - easily the most tender kebabs I've ever eaten. For veggie lovers, the vegetarian moussaka was derriciously hearty where the bechamel really pulled the eggplant, zucchini and mushrooms together well. Much to my surprise, my grilled lamb chops were underwhelming especially in comparison to some of the very best I've had from the likes of Ella and Willi's Wine Bar. A bit overcooked for medium rare and the seasoning was just unremarkable, plus the accompanying roasted cauliflower and eggplant were bland. Not far off, my friend's grass-fed braised beef was entirely forgettable in its flavors. I love how they have organic items and wild salmon I ordered the wild salmon It was okay.. I'm not a huge fan of olives so the tapanade wasnt for me. But they included a grilled lemon half. Literally drove past this place every day on my commute for 4 months before putting my foot down and making it a point to grab dinner. I read someone else's review on here and was hyped to try it out. Honestly me and my girlfriend probably sampled 6 things off the menu and I couldn't pick a favorite. It was all amazing! A rather obnoxious reply the owner: I have s life threatening heart condition snd use psyllium to block the absorption of cholesterol. My friend and I wanted to mix up the lunch routine a bit and I wanted to return after a 7 year absence and restaurant changing names. And so off we went to Kitchen Istanbul. As one would do at any Turkish restaurant, we ordered hummus accompanied by pita and warm olives. I found the consistency of hummus a bit runny and lacking in flavor. The warm olives - green and Kalamata - were soft and flavorful. We each ordered a serving of brussels sprouts that were delightfully crispy and served with a tasty aleppo aioli. My fiend and I only diverged on the cauliflower order in that I ordered a Cauliflower wrap that was very satisfying and recommended by this diner. I preferred the aleppo aioli over Haydari, the Turkish answer to Tzatziki. Darling little spot with excellent food. We came around 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon. I was afraid that it would be difficult to get a table given the high star ratings, but we were seated right away. Istanbul Kitchen sits on a corner with red awnings and little cafe tables outside. They have a decent selection of beers and wine. Also fresh pressed OJ. Fortunately I brought the family so we ordered and tried a variety of dishes. *Cauliflower with lemon and sumac: DON'T MISS! Seriously. It's smoky, it's tangy, it had a creamy yogurt dip. I may need to write to Bon Appetit to request the recipe. Or just drive back and eat it again and again. *The Trio of spreads: served with pita triangles, yummy & fun to share. *Moussaka: bubbly, hot, and perfect. *Roasted Brussels sprouts w/aioli: excellent *Feta cigars with honey & crushed pistachios: the kids liked these so much I barely got a bite. *Grilled Halloumi cheese: it comes in a few chunks with some other bits like cherries, frizee, olives. Sometimes when eating out I have noticed that some restaurants struggle to strike a balance and can be very meat or carb heavy. The plates are small (mezes) but great for tasting and sharing. We had 2 adults and 4 kids. Our tab was about $120 with the above and 2 adult beverages. So with tax and tip about $25 a person. Their rice, there aren't words to say how good their rice is. Wild Steelhead salmon kebabs I got it with rice because I come here for their rice. You know something's wrong when a Filipina is coming here because of their rice. It's that good. If I can have this salmon dish with hela extra crispy skin and rice I'd be ecstatic. Roasted cauliflower and Zucchini fritters are great veggie options. Turkish Lentil soup is addicting. My buddies got lamb meatballs, chicken kebab, and chicken wrap, all good. Previously the location of Troya. The menu's been revamped and the focus is more on Greek Turkish cuisine. As there were 9 of us, we got an early reservation at 6pm on a Tuesday. With such a large party, we had to go with the prefixed menu at $38 p/p, with family style dining. There was so much food. We were pretty full before our family style dinner entrees came. Work, nearly late for everything. Seriously lacking free time. That's why T is there to help me navigate life's uncertainties, like where to go for a much needed late lunch, since the only food I'd consumed prior to this decision point was coffee. It was an exceptional warm afternoon. I fear Clement street like I fear Chinatown. It is overwhelming. I don't know if I should stop to eat some food or shop for groceries, or buy some flowers at that fish tank store / flower shop. I fear running into people I know and have to show some civility by saying hello, and I fear in general of too many people. Clement between 5 and 9th for some strange reason, reminds me of Hong Kong. Kitchen Istanbul felt a bit of an oasis from the normal hustle and bustle, quite unexpected. I told T I could swear that I'd been here a couple of years ago, at least it was like this, a restaurant with 180 degree street access, also Mediterranean, also in the Avenues, but two years ago to me was two dog years. T ordered a white Greek wine, we shared a plate of roasted Cauliflowers and chicken kebob dish. Good and light lunch dishes. Interesting spice in both. Because the way the restaurant is laid out, it has plenty of lights coming in and a good place to window watch pedestrians. I half expected the bell was going to ring and noon prayers were to start any time soon. T said, "You've been to Istanbul?" "Yes" I relied. "Fascinating place, not a great place to go night jogging in the old town after dark as a single woman." I added. I was there last July and attempted such feat, unsuccessfully, obviously, for the usual reason of fear of personal safety in a middle east country where war was looming at the boarder. But, I did, however, enjoy the food immensely during the day light. The food here at Kitchen Istanbul was a bit more Californian, and the mazes felt a bit more like tapa dishes than the heavy set I'd eaten too often in Turkey. You see, I grew fond of mazes years ago in Germany and U.K., and had been looking for authentic ones in the States, especially in San Francisco, my local dwelling, to no avail. But.. if you are in New York, head to Queens. There are some exceptionally good ones, on par as London by Paddington Station, and almost as good as Turkey. For a lunch fare, Kitchen Istanbul serves up a light California influenced Turkish food that is decidedly more Mediterranean than authentic Turkish cuisine, but like many cuisines found in California, it understandably takes on a sunnier and greener disposition with reduced sodium, oil and spice. I liked it fine. I liked it more than fine just the way it is. I do want to come back for its happy hour mazes special. And if I do return, I'll wear shades, sit outside, and drink some Turkish coffee to chase down my mazes, just like I did in Istanbul. read more

Sofie and I enjoyed lunch there yesterday. We enjoyed the afternoon sun streaming into the dining room, the friendly and helpful waiter and nice patrons. I had a glass of the Turkish red wine for $11 - a light and fresh wine that was something I could drink by the bucket full - but not really an $11 wine in my opinion - though I'd order a bottle for $44 because I enjoy talking with Sofie. The waiter was nice, he offered to get me something else if I didn't like it because I told him it wasn't what I expected... but I liked the unexpected so it was okay. Sofie had the Moussaka with the ground spiced lamb. I ate half and she ate half - and we both enjoyed it... but we both agreed that the Moussaka that I cook is better. The main difference is that mine has more lamb, more eggplant and I use feta cheese as well as the mozarella. I can see that their version is less work and I will modify mine so that it is served in those nice shallow dishes. I had the lamb kebab, served with basmati rice and it was delicious! A slight bit of carbon from the grill on the lamb and the rice was so tasty! Sofie ate some lamb kebab too. She liked it. After dinner, we both had a Turkish coffee. This is some finely ground coffee in the bottom of our tiny cups with hot water poured on it... and some sugar. The coffee was full of flavor and pleasant to drink. We drank it slowly and smiled at each other while Sofie told me that in Turkey, some people will tell your fortune by turning over the cup after you drink your coffee and reading the inside of the cup. After I was done with my coffee, I turned out the contents onto my saucer and looked hopefully into my cup. There was a thick black sludge and total blackness. I'm sure it means that I will be returning to Kitchen Istanbul for more Lamb Kebab and my pockets will be bursting with gold. I felt bad for making a big mess of my beautiful saucer - but for $4 a teeny tiny cup of coffee I felt rambunctious. Oddly, they have two picnic tables in there. I'd rather not see picnic tables in a place that sells $44 bottles of wine. Otherwise, the place is nicely decorated with black and white photos of (I suppose) Istanbul. This spot has service and food down a T. My family and I were out celebrating and ordered the prix fixe family style for each of us at $30 per person. Everything that I could eat (I'm vegetarian) was delicious, and I left stuffed. All veggie dishes are marked below with an asterisk. We happened to be in town just as happy hour came upon us so we stopped in for a few of their vaunted appetizers and a glass of wine. We tried the zucchini, feta cigars with honey, and the brussel sprouts with aioli. The space is spacious yet warm, with a great window facing the street corner, and they gave us a great spot right by it on a large table giving plenty of room for our toddler to fidget. Of the three, we'd expected the brussel sprouts to be our favorite, but despite being a really generous portion, it was slightly burnt and a bit overly salty. The zucchini and feta cigars were more to our liking. The feta was fun to eat with the crushed pistachio and honey. No full blown dinner so we can't really comment on the main dishes, but we really liked the experience - service was particularly great. read more

Great Turkish restaurant that really took me back to my days in Istanbul: -The roasted cauliflower was truly amazing. -If you have enjoyed traditional kebaps in Istanbul, their "meatballs" will really delight you. The addition of yogurt and veggies was a nice touch. -The kebaps, which are more in an American style than a traditional Turkish style (whole chunks of meat rather than ground), were very well flavored and juicy. The rice it came with was good but there was far too little of it. -The baklava, while not quite as amazing as baklava in Turkey, was really good and fresh. However, the ice cream that came with it was obviously standard, commercial ice cream. It sort of cheapened the whole desert. -Overall, the meal was good, but we thought that the prices were a bit high. I know SF is a costly place to do business, but we eat in the city a lot, and I think that the prices are high, even when you consider the high quality of the ingredients. read more

Seated immediately on a Sunday at 6:30pm without a reservation. The service was awesome and the food was delicious! I had the beef stew which was so tender and paired so well with the eggplant purée. I only wished it came with less of the white sour cream/yogurt(?) sauce because it got to be a little bit too much for my taste near the end of my dish. I was very filled at the end of my meal and the prices were in the $20s which isn't too bad for a dinner in the city. We were huge fans of this spot pre-pandemic. Finally got a reservation for tonight and was stoked to have my favorite vegetarian moussaka... but suddenly it's no longer offered on the menu. I am SO disappointed! I chose another entree that felt overpriced and mediocre. I will continue to check the menu and hope that the veggie moussaka returns. It was one of my favorite meals in the city and while the ambiance is still fantastic, I was utterly devastated about the moussaka. We came here for a family dinner with a group of 8 on Sunday evening. They said if we made reservations we had to get the prix fixe menu. So, we decided to take our chance and walk in around 6:30. I called ahead to check the wait time and the host said they could seat us right away. When we walked in, they had reserved a big square table which was perfect for our group. It was super spacious and we had our own corner which was awesome. Ok so for the food, we ordered almost all of the vegetarian mezes and loved ALL of them! The plates we had, listed in order of our favorites, were Zucchini Fritters, Feta Cigars, Brussel Sprouts, Bulgur Salad, Roasted Cauliflower, Dip Trio, Arugula Salad, and Falafel. Not only was the food delicious, it came out within 10 minutes of us ordering. In addition, the service was fantastic. The wait staff were constantly checking on us and clearing our plates. They were extremely attentive and gave us great recommendations on what to order. We have a lot of picky eaters in our family and everyone was extremely satisfied with the overall experience. Happy Hour!! We went in for dinner and found out there was happy hour what! Sweet! $8 dishes: arugula salad, feta cigars, cheese, delicious cauliflower and vegetarian mousaka to share. All so good the cauliflower tastes a lot better this time, really good I think it's a different recipe with some pepper and chili sauce. Always love the feta cigars and the mousaka is so cheesy!! I just had brunch with my co workers about an hour ago and the food is solid. The servers were very polite even though our last person showed up super late so it took a while for us to order. Started off with a Bellini mimosa- right amount of juice and champagne My friend had a Turkish coffee, arrived in traditional Turkish saucer and cup- Beautiful. They are delivering food during the Covid-19 lockdown!! I had lamb chops last night, which came with delicious Turkish basmati rice. The four lamb chops were thick, juicy and perfectly seasoned - fabulous! I ordered them over the phone and the delivery was very quick. This is one of my favorite local restaurants so I'm happy to support them during this crazy time. read more

Intimate shop. Very attentive staff. I ordered the lamb kebab and found that the generous portion of meat may have been more than I expected. I asked for a side a taziki to help get it down. The staff was very understanding. The falafel was excellent. The hummus had a unique creamy taste. I would LOVE their recipe! All around good stuff, I would maybe opt for the salmon entree next go-gound. read more
