We just happened to be in the area after shopping at the Santa Anita mall and I couldn't believe what a hidden gem we stumbled upon!! The quality of the fish and seafood used here were so good. UNI!!!! I love good quality uni, I got their least expensive kind but it was so so good. It was rich and creamy and I ordered extra kizumi wasabi. This Santa Barbara Uni Don was seriously packed and loaded with uni I was shocked. The crispy spicy tuna was nice and crunchy with a good kick, but my highlight of the day was the bowl itself. (I ate both all by myself.) The lady who served me was very attentive and sweet so I recommend checking this place out. Ordered this random premium chirashi off DoorDash with little expectation, and I was surprised! First of all, I've had it all, all the best chirashi in SoCal, including SD, and even Vegas. I've hit all the Michelins spots, and I've also had many of the best spots in Asia including Tokyo and Taipei. As far as SoCal goes, this chirashi is legit top 3. The quality to me is as good as Ootoro, but you get so much more. It kind of reminds me of the original Akasaka's chirashi (minus the monkfish liver) before the owner sold the place. This time when i come here, they just released the shabu shabu menu and it never disappoints. The broth is clean and flavorful, and the meat and veggies are always fresh. Their uni is surprisingly good. It is super fresh, rich, and the pieces are big instead of tiny portions you get at some other spots. Their osyters are fresh as well. I've stopped going to Kiyo about a year now because I was very disappointed with how they lessen the fish cuts, of course price stayed the same. But today I went back because my wife is still a fan of their chirashi bowl. They increase the price a little (inflation) but now they provide beautiful thick cuts. Maybe it's the chef? We also got the premium suntory beer and it was sour, like it had gone bad. We told the waitress who swapped it out and what they brought out the second time was significantly better. This has become my favorite lunch spot for sushi because of their lunch menu. The fish quality is good and I've come here like 4 times and never been disappointed. If you order take out, they even put an ice pack in the bag to keep your fish cold. I always get a chirashi. It's a very good portion size and the price is amazing. The rolls are really good too! They're not just stuffed with imitation crab meat like other places. My favorite is the tuna lover. I've also tried the spicy yellowtail hand roll, it's good but you have to like the more mushy texture. The restaurant is pretty small. They do have 2 tables outside that can seat 4. I actually came with my dog and sat outside to eat. It was nice and they were attentive and came out to check on us often. I look forward to trying more of their dishes! read more

Okay, so I have been here a good handful of times since they first opened. I'm glad they've done well for themselves. This restaurant was one of those local cursed locations where restaurants came and went year after year until they opened. They've been around since before the pandemic. And, my opinion hasn't really changed. It's good but overpriced if you like cooked Japanese food like teriyaki or tempura. I don't know how the prices fare regarding sushi, but they are just a tad too pricey for the portions and quality. Located in a giant strip mall with many other restaurants and businesses, I guess their sushi must be something special, because they have a big certificate of being rated 5 from some sushi organization from Japan. It's a tiny restaurant, but with the giant lot, it's not a problem finding parking. I've never had a wait here. The missus is not a fan because of the prices being too high. So after a few dinners there, I transitioned to just going there for the combo lunch special with my son. It used to be a decent deal and a decent price. Beef teriyaki and a small portion of gyoza (now 3) was less than $20. Now it's slightly over thanks to inflation. The small portion of beef is okay because it's very tasty, but only when it's under twenty bucks. Not when it's over. It's really a very small amount of very thin steak. Still, the flavor is very good, and their teriyaki sauce is great. The karaage appetizer is also very solid. The house hot sake is insanely expensive for cheap sake. One large is $17, whereas everywhere else it is usually $9 at most. This price has to drop. You can get an entire 1.5 L of this type of CA sake for $8 at the supermarket next door. The sushi I saw at other tables looks impressive, but I don't eat raw fish, so I can't help you with that. Service is capable without being particularly emotional or friendly. It is what it is. I wish prices were just a bit lower. I'd go for lunch, which would've been my recommendation if I wrote this years ago like I should have. Now that I just went again and had a hefty bill on lunch, I'm not so sure how heartily I'd recommend it. It's good but portions are small, prices are high, and nothing is brilliant.
