I decided to check out Klekolo a couple of months ago but haven't written any reviews for Yelp in a while so its time to catch up. My friend and I went to Klekolo one evening to sit and have a drink and catch up since we had'nt seen each other for a while. We chose the wrong place. While my coffee was fine and have no real complaints about the service, I thought the atmosphere was terrible. from reading the reviews on yelp against klekolo i had to take a stand! Many reviewers take things too seriously!!!! I love the atmosphere! and love the coffee!!! The barista's were genuine and down to earth, the man with all the piercings was witty and knew what he was doing. i love this place! Klekolo doesn't accept debit/credit , but since i always carry cash it was no problem :). for those with cash issues there is an atm on site and two banks located at the end of the street. read more

This is a stuck in time and place college town coffee shop replete with an eclectic cast of patrons and a dark, dated, somewhat dingy decor that screams "hippies and starving artists welcome here." LOVE this place! Having interacted with the owner and baristas quite a bit, i know that this place attracts a cool, unique, creative crowd for a reason. the vibe is chill, it's open into the wee morning hours on weekends, and the music is often on-point. also, they showcase a lot of cool local art! but what you're really interested in is the coffee, right? it IS a coffee shop, after all. well, never fear! the coffee is the best in town, especially if you're ordering specialty drinks. i used to go with someone who would frequently order a single tall half-caf hazelnut latte (unfortunately, i'm serious), and the baristas would never even bat an eye. they also have a huge blackboard full of crazy, cool, random coffee and non-coffee drink combinations. what more could you ask for? just in case that's not enough, they have sinfully delicious local pastries and dessert items like turtle cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, pies, etc. they're expensive, but well worth the splurge every once in a while. man, i must sound like an ad for klekolo, but i don't care! i've got mad love for this place because they were here before the far lesser javapalooza and brew bakers. klekolo is the OG of middletown coffee shops, and it's too bad that it doesn't get the respect it deserves. read more

It's an ok coffee place, nothing special. The teas are great. But the interior is a Major let down. The chairs are all broken, ripped, and flat. The floor look like they have a thick film of filth on them (a once a month mopping wouldn't be a bad idea). On a plus side there's wifi there. But, you won't want to stay long when the employees friends are hogging the tables and the baristas don't give you a warm welcome. I've been here a couple of times, it's a perfect place if you love coffee and/or tea. I've ordered tea and espresso and the service was quick and friendly. The selection of teas was good and had a variety of flavors. The tea came out and was very hot but after a little cooling down it was very satisfying and the espresso was also very good and smooth. The price was very reasonable too, the tea cost a little more than a dollar and espresso $2. Overall the atmosphere is classic coffee house and a nice place to grab some beverage and a snack. read more

Absolutely true to form. I have been patronizing Klekolo's for a decade and it is unanimous all around. THE very best coffee, lousy atmosphere. If you want the best coffee and some mighty fine pastries then Klekolo's is for you . I've been coming here more often for coffee after class, and I really love it. Yeah, the other customers might be a tad creepy-looking, but they won't hurt you... course, as a metalhead, I might be used to their "type" by now. :P The specialty drinks are a tad pricy, but totally worth it. You can't go wrong with the Witches' Brew - caramel, espresso, and mocha. I also really liked the Purple Dragon, which was blackberry, caramel, and espresso. There's a lot to choose from. If you're unsure of what to get, just ask the staff, who are always helpful, funny, and friendly. They also have pastries and other such dessert-type things. Last time I was in here, there were GIGANTIC raspberry cream puffs on display. I wish I had one. Mom got a pack of gluten-free ginger cookies - at $4.00 for two it might be off-putting, but they had real ginger smooshed in at the top. She said they were excellent. read more

Great coffee and espresso drinks. I'm generally picky about my cappucino and latte and while this place doesn't quite get it perfect, they do much better than just about everywhere else around here and they definitely understand what the key differences are between these drinks. Pastry selection is good. I wish they had some smaller items (I'm trying to stay healthy!). The best bets are usually in the lower display case. The atmosphere is always interesting. Different crowds throughout the day (my favorite time to hang out is in the mornings). Recently they changed the seating arrangement and I think it really helps. read more

I make sure to stop here when I'm in town visiting family and friends, and ALWAYS grab one to go on my way back to the airport. The mocha lattes are superb; not sure exactly what sort of chocolate they use, but I have yet to find one better, and I've taken some beans home which were always a treat.( I recommend the Ethiopian or Pony Express.) I really like the funky, relaxed atmosphere. The baristas are always very friendly and service-oriented, but also treat me like an old friend. It's nice. I gave it 5 stars because it's some place I won't miss in my quick visits to town. And I've never been there when the slutty, smelly teens are a nuisance as others have mentioned. read more

Yes, the service and ambience are unconventional, but also unpretentious, and although I am probably a minority, I value a lack of hype much more than traditional barista or waiter "good manners", in other words I don't give a darn if they act more casually than what is considered the norm in these jobs. Great coffee AWFUL service. To the point where it doesn't matter how good the coffee is. The baristas are just too terrible to deal with. We've gone a few times. Kept our heads down walking by the very angry clientele that sits outside. Ordered coffee and left without incident. Never a pleasant experience but we got the coffee. Today we went in, and since it is such a nice day, wanted iced coffee. My boyfriend asked "can we have this coffee iced?" To which the first man walked away. The woman begrudgingly answered by saying "it's Haitian". I'm not sure if that's very obviously an answer to "can we have it iced" but we didn't know. So he asked again "okay great so we can have it iced" to which she again looked at him like he was a complete moron and said "it's. Haitian." Clearly no answer was coming so he gave in and said "okay large." They made our coffees and I asked if we could pay with a card. The heavily pierced and tattooed man angrily said "you can but then I just have your card." "Okay here." "I. Will. Just. Have. It.". So shamefully I had to walk into the dark corner and take out money. I guess maybe we don't look enough like them to deserve service but I promise you we are never going back. read more

Still the nicest coffee spot WITHIN town. Utre quaint. Some of the patrons are equally so, clinically speaking. I've spoken to a variety of visitors from abroad, one returning from a pc startup in the Ukraine entertained me for four hours with stories of historical cabbages and kings. Mike is the nicest of the brew-bunch. He is friendly and he smiles more readily. Some days, the service is efficient but the karma grim. [The one thing people LOVE about any java joint is the WELCOME SMILING CONNECTION with staffers]. One day without Mike there, I asked for very hot milk in my cafe au lait, and the coffee was burnt. I didn't return it. [The young will not remember the word POSTUM but this is not desirable in a fresh cuppa]. I ordered a cafe au lait a few days ago. As it was hot, I didn't taste the blend of ingredients until 1/2 way through. Either the cup itself or the syrup seemed to be compromising the great BOLD flavours of the coffee they prepare. Still I'm a senior so what do I know? My sensitive palate is obviously different than most. [Many my age find diner coffee to be the ultimate experience]. College students and working men seem to enjoy double espressos. Mostly young patrons order coffee specialties with a multiple layer of SWEET flavour add-ons, and I'm not so certain that the coffee itself remains the star. Its centrally located around the block from the town precinct and down the street from the Federal courthouse. The sign on the door indicates one will be monitored, but I am not certain by whom. I tried this place a few years ago and was not impressed but I was in the area and needed some coffee for home, I saw that they had a good rating now and about 70 people had reviewed then so I thought I would try them again. I looked at all of the pre packed coffee in their 1/2 lb bags and decided on two that I thought would be great by their descriptions. I ordered a medium coffee to go and paid over 20 bucks for 1 lb of coffee! I took two sips of my coffee while I was driving home and feared I made a mistake. The coffee to go was watery and old. The next morning I ground my coffee for pour over and started the proccess. The beans won't bloom. Crap! The coffee is old. I even took coffee from the back of their shelf hoping it was fresher. I know that's a pompous move but I really wanted good coffee. So I decided I would use it in a french press the next time and it didn't make a difference still stale. On to the next coffee described as a medium coffee with chocolate notes. This is dark and burnt coffee. I used a chemex to brew it this time to get rid of the acidity and bitter taste and it's still taste burnt. In a pinch I have no issue drinking starbucks bold roast black but this coffee is even stronger. There is no flavor except roast. If you would like to get an espresso based drink with lots of milk and some cool flavors maybe this is the place. But if you would like to get coffee keep looking. read more

This coffee is definitely in my top 5 best coffee I've ever had. I'm here at least once a week. Their sweet treats are pretty nummy too and change pretty frequently. Cash ONLY which is a tad inconvenient but if I just want a coffee its usually manageable. you won't find coffee as good as this. This will make you stop drinking that brown water they serve in chains and other indi coffee houses. The espresso is second to none. I've been coming here since it first opened it's doors. Hollie does an amazing job with this place. I for one am glad that she is trying to do something about the loitering, because it's bad for business.I'd rather have a place that serves quality coffee then a place that's merely ends up being a hang out. Let me begin my story with saying that the reason I was first brought to this hole was the incredible coffee. I never even liked coffee but I still drank it every morning just because this place has the best I've ever tasted. But there is a much darker side to Klekolo. Such an incredible history lives on court st. from the side of the parking garage to the church steps and all the way up the street, hundreds of stories have unfolded. Several years ago (Kle rats refer to this time as "golden summers" when all of our now regulars first started appearing at this coffee shop. It was the place to chill, the hot spot, where to go when you had nowhere to go. For many, the church steps were called home and bed. Every bodily fluid you could imagine has been spilled on that cement. Think about that the next time you enjoy your witch over there. Whoever said that this place is a black hole for delinquets, slutty teens, and druggies was right. Don't get me wrong, I know many great people who come from Kle's. If it weren't for some of it's trash, I wouldn't be on my second year with the love of my life. Showing up at Kle's every day caused me to become friends with a lot of people that I maybe shouldn't have. One morning around 6:30, i was tripping balls huddled against the brick wall staring at the dirt under the trees and people started handing me money; i bought a coffee. My suggestion is to go for the coffee but be careful not to talk to ANYONE AT ALL. I must say, the majority of the regulars are people you don't want to know. Once you fall into the black hole, it's almost impossible to escape. read more
