A hole in the wall thai spot on st marks. I really would've never noticed this place if my girlfriend didn't take me here. It's a very dark dim place like all the other thai restaurants. It's a cute ambience in here. However the food is just meh. I had the curry puffs, chicken satay skewers, spicy basil chicken broad noodles and all of it was just ok. What a great Place.....The first thing that I thought upon entering this downstairs gem is, 'What a great Thai place, it looks like there are a lot of Thai people eating here', which is something you should always look for in an ethnic kitchen. The portions were great, all the little fried somethings on the appetizer menu are awesome. I am a regular here. I like coming here at night, during the week. . The food is consistently tasty. The variety is great. The drinks are wonderful. The prices are low. Service is perfect. I like to order and recommend tuna tartare (truly unique recipe), grilled baby squid legs, chicken and shrimp dumplings, firecrackers, fresh summer roll, mussaman curry, mandalay basil, and some other things... The lunch special prices are pretty handy, great for a post class meal. I do absolutely love this place's Duck Pad Thai. It is so delicious. The decor of the restaurant is alittle dim and dreary, but the abacus on the walls makes it seem kind of fun. Yummy plumtinis that I could've had a dozen of. . I only had the soup and appetizers but all of it was delicious. The only downer here is that it was outrageously loud (it is deceptively huge inside for a downstairs space) and we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table and there is NO space to wait. We kept shuffling around on the stairs and sidewalk out front which is annoying because St. Marks is busier than Canal Street nowadays. A waiting area would've been a nice accommodation. The atmosphere is amazing and the waitresses/waiters are nice. The fried rice and pad thai is good. However, the sauce for the salad isn't as good as I thought it would be, I ended up not eating the salad because of the sauce. Besides the salad, this place isn't bad. For the lunch special, it comes with soup, appetizer, entrée and dessert. The coconut ice cream was delicious. Overall, this place is worth trying. read more

Went here with a friend on Christmas Day evening. We had been in the area just hopping around for drinks. As we were at the bar someone ordered what looked like chicken wings...we smelled them before we saw them and WOW. That was when we decided we wanted to be seated for a bite to eat. I got the Pad Thai and I can't exactly remember what my friend ordered but I will say that was the best Pad Thai I've tried. My friend was also blown away with her food. We also ordered a pitcher of mojito which was very strong (in the best way possible) we each paid a total of $25-$30 (each ordered another drink on top of the pitcher). Great food, great price! I've been to St.Mark's place hundreds of times and never have I noticed this restaurant because it's so hidden by stairs. I went with some old college roommates for dinner and it was really good. The lights and the decor were just lovely. I ordered the Spicy Basil Noodles with tofu and had a hard time finishing it because it was just so much. The tofu wasn't as good as I'd like it to be so next time I'll order that dish with just veggies instead. Also, if you go there make sure you get the Thai ice tea. Holy cow we all LOVED it. We had Tofu Tad and summer roll (we just happen to hop into this place to kill time and weren't here for dinner), portion was just right for two and was delicious. Okay food, terrible service!!! The waiters are terrible!!! I used to go this place very often for lunch, but NOT any more!! Today i ordered some food but got something else, so i asked the waiter, the waiter insisted that she heard me ordered the food that she brought. Fine, thats not a big deal, everybody makes mistake... But when I finished the food and asked the check, they charged 18% tip directly on the bill!! Thats the first time in this place! There isn't a lot going on at St. Marks during the day as the majority of the more popular restaurants do not open until 6PM. I love eating in St. Mark's, so I've decided to revisit one of my lunch regulars for a Saturday lunch at 3PM. We were still in luck as lunch specials are served everday from 12:00 - 3:30 PM. Some may consider Klong a bit dark as it is situated in a cellar-like ambiance, with dark cement walls/floors without a lot of lighting. In this long and narrow restaurant (like most other restaurants in St. Marks) are ~35 tables with wood-like laminate. The chairs are a bit retro (circa-80's) with the big-round/bowl seats. In the rear of the restaurant are a single-person men's and women's bathroom, with a bit of a modern feel with a raised stainless steel bowl sink, and tiled floors. The light in the men's ceiling light was broken, with only the sink/wall light on, giving enough light to see just enough where everything was. Klong is great for those on a budget. They offer several lunch dishes + an appetizer for $6 (chicken, beef, tofu, or vegetable) or $7 (shrimp). I ordered the Spicy Basil Noodles (Kee Mao) with beef, which includes fan-fried flat rice noodles sauteed in a spicy sauce with tomatoes, basil, eggs, bell peppers, and onions. For my appetizer, I ordered the Fried Chicken & Shrimp Dumplings. Our orders took only about 6-8 minutes from the time we ordered, which I largely attribute to working crowds that they experience during the weekdays. Presentation seemed to be a bit spiffed up from when I had last visited with my 3 round-shaped dumplings served in a small white ceramic bowl served on one corner of my dish of Spicy Basil Noodles. The dumplings sat in a nice sweet/spicy chili sauce which was just amazing with the dumplings. Yum!!! Three?! Is that all?!?! I could have eaten a whole dish of these. The noodle portions were decent though far from generous, with about 8-10 slices of beef, not too bad. Flavors of sweet and spicy accentuated each other well with the tender beef and noodles. I would have preferred a bit more spice as is expected from some Thai dishes, as this almost resembled the flavors of Pad See Eew, but regardless was still very delicious. Service was average at the beginning of our meal, with the waiter refilling our glasses of water, but it took a bit of time to get the waiter's attention when we wanted the bill. The waiter seemed to disappear near the rear cashier, as another lady was tasked to clean the 8-10 occupied tables. We waited about 10 minutes before we were able to get the waiter's attention, to pay the bill, and go on our way. Klong has a small but decent variety of dishes to choose from, though much of the menu is catered towards more traditional dishes. Prices are fairly cheap, though portions could be slightly more generous. I'd definitely come back to Klong as it was one of the few budget lunches I would frequent in the area when I used to work in the area. Note: It may be stated in the menu that Klong only accepts Visa and Mastercard, but AMEX is also gladly accepted. read more

I've been going to Klong for quite sometime. It's definitely one of my favorite spots in the St. Marks area. The setting is intimate, dimly lit, therefore, it is great for dates. I don't recommend this place for larger parties as the place is rather small and narrow. Seating can be rather limited on a busy night. If you can, I recommend sitting at the bar on Tuesday nights as they give you a 15% discount on food/drinks ordered at the bar. It's a little happy hour tip, but they don't obviously advertise this anywhere. In terms of their drinks, try the Klong martini; it's a very unique drink, smooth but very strong. For food, I'd recommend any of their appetizers; they are delicious and go great with their specialty cocktails. If there were any cons, I'd say that there was one time where I tipped the waitress less than 15% at the table because I didn't order food, only drinks. They felt I undertipped and asked me why I gave so little. It was a slight miscommunication/misunderstanding, but otherwise, the service has been fine every other time I've been there. read more

I work nearby, and sometimes order their lunch special--a great price at around $6.50 for an appetizer and an entree. Don't remember ever eating anything else there since I really like their pad kee mao (spicy basil noodles) and I like to stick with what I like. I had to ask for a spoon, and the pumpkin was a bit firm, but i love that they even had pumpkin on their menu. yum. The chairs made an awful noise but the atmosphere is pretty cozy for a big place on St Mark's. try the special Klong Pad thai that has seafood and comes wrapped in an egg white omlette. That travels well (we got it delivered). Also amusing is when you order certain things for delivery, they have to give you each component separately (mock duck, curry sauce, special fried noodle topping.) Mock duck is good. In terms of the food, I had a beef curry dish that I thought was good, but not anything amazing. My friend got the pad thai which is always a safe choice at a Thai restaurant. Where do I begin with klong? I've been coming here since about 2008, and I've recommended it to just about everyone I know. The fact that happy hour lasts until 10pm M-Th and until 8pm F-Su will have me coming here for all eternity. I actually hate that I'm exposing this amazing deal. Most drink are under 5$ and I'm here for a good portion of the summer. Typical Thai restaurant food, lunch specials until 3:30 for only like 8$. I order like the same 5 things every time I visit. I would def recommend the lychee sangria and the flavored mimosas and the mojito.I've never had an issue being here. Sometimes it can get really loud and crowded but that's just because it's so popular. I love this place! it's amazingly cheep and also really good. The appetizers are huge for the price, my pledge sister usually eats the $4 chicken wings as an entrée and she's full.
