We love knuckleheads. My husband has been playing in the jam for several years and enjoys it very much. It's welcoming for new players and just fun in general. They have great Acts for reasonable prices. It's got a relaxed ambiance and people get up to dance at the jams which is particularly fun. When visiting KC and looking for live music all the locals suggested Knuckleheads. We checked out their website and found out Tommy Castro and Marcia Ball were playing. What?!!! And $25 a ticket?!!!!! We were on our way. The place is great. While the tables were sold out and all that was left was general admission, we got there early enough to get some seats along the side. That really wasn't a problem as we ended up dancing half the night. We had such a great time!!! $4 16 ouncers was not outrageous for a venue like this. And let's not forget about the friendly staff. This place has the perfect recipe for a great evening out! Great music, great prices, friendly staff and a great vibe. No wonder everyone recommended it. Such a fabulous music venue with multiple stages running shows concurrently. We saw a band in the Garage, which is a larger room with a variety of seating options from standard banquet chairs and long tables to high tops with stools. We snagged plush, rocking movie theatre seats to the left of the stage, which were super-comfy and gave us a great vantage point to enjoy our concert. The sound of the bathroom air hand dryers on the other side of the venue echoed through the hall periodically, which just made me giggle, but didn't take anything away from our enjoyment. The staff was universally friendly, including the guy directing people away from the sinkhole (!) in the dirt parking lot. Yes, Knuckleheads is nestled right up against the train tracks in an industrial part of town, but there was nothing sketchy about it. Talk about an old throwback. Knucklehead's is a music venue where the lights are hot, drinks are ice cold, shirt collars are blue and a perfect place to let your hair down and have a good ole time. Much of the music is slanted towards the old-country honky tonk hepcats, but you'll also see some good blues and rock artists come through and play on either the indoor or outdoor stage. I will say that if you know your inside show is going to be busy you might want to get there early because the sight lines diminish as you get farther back. Another small note, as much as I love this venue, it is literally in the middle of the nowhere that is the East Bottoms. If you're having a good time, which I guarantee you will, please make sure that somebody in your group is okay to drive or make sure you bring some extra cash for a cab because there's nothing close that you can walk to. read more

Knucklehead's is as perfect a venue for good, old country music as you're going to find. I love the music scene in Nashville and Austin, but when exploring those cities I never did find a venue that is as raw and real as Knucklehead's. The last show that I saw here was Billy Joe Shaver, a legendary older country musician who owns the stage when he's on it. Maybe it's all the pictures on the wall of him around the joint, but I get the feeling he's at home here every time he plays. What's even better is after the show the musicians can mingle with the crowd and you can have a few drinks with them more often than not. Whether the back patio is open or not, you're bound to have a good time here with some great music and colorful characters. *Last note: I saw the Black Keys at Sprint Center back in April and could not help but think how much better the show would be in a setting like Knucklehead's. I do wish they had some seating that was a bit more comfortable for outdoor events. For those of us with physical disabilities it can get pretty uncomfortable. But we still have a lot of fun. So, I bought tickets to a show at this venue and the experience for me and my wife was awful. I am a veteran with combat PTSD and I was treated deplorably. As a veteran with mental disabilities I require certain things that are not unreasonable requests. This instance I had bought my tickets and had a show scheduled. I always have to case out any place that I go. I have to know areas where I may be able to go incase of anxiety. I also have to be aware of the layout incase I feel I need to leave quickly due to one issue or another. I showed a couple days early as to arrange for these reasonable accommodations and was turned away. I waited in line to get to the door man. It was rather hectic but not too busy. I asked the door man if I could have a quick look around to case out the layout. I was told that I wasn't getting passed him without a ticket to the current show. I tried to explain my situation but was again told no. As I was talking I was quickly dismissed me and went to the next person in line. The show was not to start for at least another half hour. I said what a douche quietly on my way out and he told me to look at the camera like I was going to act out. I was treated as if I was trying to steal a show. He could have contacted somebody to help me out. I didn't return to watch the show I purchased the tickets for because I didn't want to be treated like I was burdening this establishment. I do not recommend this establishment if you have invisible disabilities. read more

I can't comment on the food YET, but I will b back to try that! Last night we explored Knuckleheads and I'm glad we did. Walking up to this biker bar look a like I felt like we were walking onto a movie set of western Texas. The neon lights glowing, the music drifting from the stages, and the smiling faces greeting you at the bar. It was truly spectacular. Not the typical dive bar, this was exactly like how Austin, Texas was which feels like home to me. Walking in to an old time saloon, with wooden floors, chain fences and Rolling Rocks on tap, this is a little Texas inside KC. The music was phenomenal. I discovered a little band called Erika Weenerstrom. I NEED TO SEE THIS BAND AGAIN. The lead singer was nothing short of amazing. Wherever they play next I must go. Check them out. We also saw a Missouri native, Bryant Carter, play in the Gospel Lounge. Nashville has done him well playing his own version of country with a lot of soul behind it. It was a pleasant surprise as well. As for the negatives, the Gospel Lounge is very small and limited seating, but that's good for the music and sound. It's a Cash only bar, which in this day and age is very inconvenient. They do have an ATM though. read more

This is one of the best places in Kansas City for live music. I love that Knuckleheads showcases not only amazing well-known artists but also a great selection of lesser-known, but incredibly talented musicians. Most of my recent visits to Knuckleheads have been to the garage which seems to be where they put the acts that sell really well, so it's always packed. We always plan to get there early so we can settle in and grab a beer and snacks before it gets really packed. The last show we saw there was Alejandro Escovedo who put on a stunningly good show. The sound system in the garage was perfect and it's clear that while Knuckleheads may look like a dive, they're classy enough to invest in quality equipment. read more

One of the best music places I have been to. They have so many stages and they are all so different. If you want a "historic" and eclectic place to hang out, Knuckleheads is the place. My mom and I go frequently to their Elvis Show in the Gospel Lounge. Jim Bergen (?) is quite the entertainer. He sings for 3 hours and never quits, all the while dressed like Elvis. Definitely look up the line ups for Knuckleheads because the outdoor stage is awesome! I feel like they try to have a wide variety of genres of music too. Great juke joint where you can drink , grab a bite , dance , listen to bands . They have three different stages if I'm not mistaken and they keep the place hopping. If the boy I love hadn't already convinced me to move here, I think a trip to Knuckleheads would have sealed the deal. Tucked away in little neighborhood full of abandoned warehouses, cute beaten up houses with trucks and machinery on their front lawns, and most importantly TRAIN TRACKS, Knuckleheads appears like a beacon of honkeytonk juke joints with its glowing sign and old shanty structure underneath the highway. This club is in the league of the most venerable institutions. Think, CBGB (its original intent), but in a true "seat of the blues" city like KCMO. I can't believe this place hasn't been here forever. It's just got that worn in, authentic vibe which is the BEST vibe a music venue can possibly have. It was the kind of place I had searched for (in vain) when visiting Memphis and Nashville this past spring. I saw a show here last night for the first time and was blown away (props to Little Rachel, second coming of LaVerne Baker, and Deke, pure rockabilly fun). I have to wonder if a bad show can even go on at Knuckleheads? Now, that seems impossible (I used to book at various clubs in the city and a GOOD show was the exception and not the norm), but I doubt I'd even care because the surroundings surely make up for whatever sub par musical offerings might be going on. It was a steamy night, and the show was outside, but I didn't mind the humidity or the mosquitoes. The trains going by on the tracks literally just a few feet away from the stage added to, rather than detracted from the atmosphere (I think the sound of trains going by is one of the most mournfully romantic sounds in the world). I cannot wait to see a show inside, with its rows of weathered wooden tables and chairs. The layout is very cozy and I doubt there is a bad seat in the house. Outside, you can sit up in a converted old caboose balcony for a birds eye view of the stage, I shit you not. If you're thinking, "could this place get any better," I will up the ante, darlings: they have fried pickles. And fried other things. And burgers. And giant piles of nachos. Has Knuckleheads properly wooed you yet? I say if you're not lucky enough to have that special man or lady in your life at the moment, Knuckleheads is true love, from the right side of the tracks. read more

If I was in the business of writing short reviews, I would simply write "Knuckleheads? Fuck yeah!" and be done with it. Alas, I'm not in the business of short reviews. In my opinion, Knuckleheads is the best bar in Kansas City. It may not be the one i visit the most...heck, it's not even in my heavy rotation, but every time I go here it is an AMAZING time. It starts with the trip to the bar itself. Winding through the East Bottoms, every condemned building and abandoned roadside mattress makes you question if you are properly following your directions. Trust me, you are. Soon enough you're going to turn what you think is another desolate corner and you'll be thrust into a bustling environment of motorcycles, neon lights and the muffled sound of the blues. This place looks like a Hollywood set designer was tasked with creating the ultimate roadhouse, complete with railroad tracks and slowly passing trains. All it is missing is Patrick Swayze (and really, aren't we ALL missing Patrick Swazye?) It's glorious and it oozes authenticity. Now coming here, you're generally going to have to pay a significantly hefty cover (cash...no debit cards at Knuckleheads). That's because believe it our not you're about to check out a fantastic band. Just because you don't know about country or blues musicians doesn't mean that act setting up inside isn't a big f'in deal. Trust me, they probably are. Pay the cover and be happy you have a chance to be witness to something great. The interior is shabby to be sure, but damn if it isn't interesting. Every corner of the place is covered in photographs of past acts, or just random bar stuff from years past. It's like a time machine, if time machines only took you to the best places ever. There's a shrine to Billy Bob Thorton, which is pretty hilarious. There are three different music areas, all that lend themselves to a different vibe. The smallest is (I believe) an actual chapel that holds gospel church services. I bet that's the only church with a full bar! It's also used for very small, intimate performances that seem to be more low-key and are more about appreciating fantastic musicians than they are about really getting down. That's for the other two areas. Inside the main bar you'll find a medium sized stage, rows of picnic tables and the most eclectic crowd of all time. 21 to 85, I swear. Dancing. Drinking. Just a dang good time. Outside is the crown jewel of the entire establishment. There's a huge stage that is flanked by old train cars. You can rent these out for concerts, which I think is quite possibly the coolest thing ever. The still functional trains roll by slowly, and their whistles offer an unintended accompaniment to the bands. On a warm summer night, sitting out on the patio and drinking a yard beer while watching an amazing band play is pretty much perfection. So that's Knuckleheads. There is a small "gospel lounge" that seats 60, an indoor stage, and outdoor stage with a second level, and the garage across the street for big shows indoors. If you buy a ticket for the Garage you can come across the street and buy food, hang out, get your souvenirs or just wander the place checking out the photos, signs and people. Be prepared to dance, drink $4 tall boys, meet strangers, talk to the band, and wave at the passing trains 20 feet from the balcony. Now I get it. The first time I went years ago, I had to be at work the next day, so I didn't drink much, left early, and just didn't get into the show very much. But I went Saturday afternoon for the Open Jam and had a blast! I don't know how they arrive at the lineup of musicians, but it's gotta say great things about local Kansas City talent if these guys are mostly supporting players. It was amazing how the group shuffled from set to set, some of them switching from one instrument to another. Another thing that made the day so enjoyable was that the crowd was refreshingly mature. It's not that I don't like being around kids my daughter's age, but it was nice for a change to hang out with folks who aren't trying so hard to impress each other. And there's no cover-just a tip jar, which you should definitely make use of. I wished the afternoon would never end. Mercifully on that 90+ degree afternoon, we were inside. There's plenty of room to move around between the tables, which is necessary since (at least Saturday afternoons) there's no table service. But the bartenders keep up very well, and drink prices are reasonable. We didn't order any food, and I hardly saw any around; but that's self service, too. I can't wait til it cools off and I can see some shows outside. They have an amazing lineup of shows coming. Until then, I'll be getting my "Regular" status on Saturday afternoons! read more

When you roll up on this place it looks like a neon covered commercialized bar, but step inside and it is the real deal blues bar. Remember that movie Brewster's Millions when the train would roll through the outfield. An outdoor show at Knuckleheads wouldn't be the same if the train didn't roll up next to the bar and blow the horn. The outdoor stage is awesome. It is a great place to see a show. The indoor stage isn't nearly as cool. The living room is a third area that is a small room for a band. To call it intimate is an understatement. Very cool place to see a show. Any closer to the band and you would be on stage with them. Their merchandise is classic. Love the Johnny cash shirt with him flipping the bird. After you toss back a few drinks and start to get hungry, make your way inside and get a few of their tacos! read more

When I listen to blues I want my environment to be as down and dirty as the music. This place delivers! Housed in a large warehouse/roadhouse. Long tables seat patrons and the band plays in another space that has a dance floor, of sorts. This place is in the middle of nowhere, so if you think your lost-think again. Tonight was the 1st time we were early enough to eat. $1.50 tacos and $3.50 16oz Miller Lite made dinner cheap at $8 ($10 w/tip). Considered stopping at ATM to get cash on the way there and should have. You can use debit cards everywhere except the bar (guess no tabs to keep up with). There are a couple of Fee ATMs so you can still get cash. Overall the ambience tries to be trashy and biker but the staff is friendly and I have never felt unsafe. Went to this place for the first time last night to see "Southern Culture on the Skids"... the show was awesome, but beyond the amazing entertainment lies this funky little place with more character than one might imagine! There's an Indoor stage, an Outdoor stage, multiple bars/bartenders (CASH ONLY, but there's an ATM onsite), and even a small kitchen serving typical "bar food" selections. It's unassuming and completely laid back. The lineup of entertainers is diverse, ranging from rock to country and even weekly Gospel cafe, offering multiple reasons to come back... and believe me, I will! read more

If you have any interest in blues, country or rockabilly music and somehow haven't been to Knucklehead's, you are missing out. Located in Kansas City's scenic (in a post-industrial, neo-depression kinda way) East Bottoms, Knucklehead's is the ultimate venue for these musical genres. The atmosphere is amazing, it's authentically honky-tonky and road housey, yet only a couple minutes from downtown. If you're lucky a train will go by, as someone is actually singing about trains (this has happened several times, and I find it far too amusing). It's the type of place where you drink a PBR tallboy while sitting next to a 300 lb. biker wearing a hat made from an entire racoon pelt. If you find this anything less than totally awesome, there is something wrong with you. Don't be intimidated by that image though, in my experience the crowds have been exceptionally civil and friendly. As an added bonus, they have food. The menu is kinda like what you would find at a state fair, heavy on the fried items. I knew I was in for a treat when I saw boxes and boxes of raw russet potatoes in the kitchen, and TWO different fry-cutting contraptions (the regular lever kind and the "rotato" style). I am a huge fan of hand-cut fries, and theirs did not disappoint. They make a damn fine burger as well. The food line can be pretty long at busy shows, but it is well worth the wait. read more

This'll make sense to the right people: Knuckleheads is as if "Bob's Country Bunker" from The Blues Brothers had a kid with "Torchie's", the bar in Streets of Fire where The Bombers motorcycle gang hung out. And yes, that's a major compliment. The Dame and I first went here with The Gasmask Gypsy to see Little Rachel and Deke Dickerson perform. Little did I know that the drive through the brick-era industrial bottoms would lead us to The Winchester Mystery Roadhouse. The place has everything you'd ever imagine a good roadhouse would have; from it's kitchen-sink cobbling of buildings, decor, and offerings from the bar and kitchen. A massive outdoor stage with an amazing, cared-for sound system so crisp you can hear every note of every chicken-picked guitar and tub-thumped bass-beat...even when a diesel freight train is passing mere feet from the stage. We had food that was less like bar food and more like the chow I'd get at the Drive In Theater as a kid. This means awesome. The interior walls have rows and rows of photos of the talented folks who've performed there, and the history and celebration of Americana is just oozing from every corner of the place. Every time we've been, it just has such a great vibe and genuinely upbeat feel without feeling like any bit of it is contrived. Like a really great Rat Rod, Knuckleheads is a cantankerous and lively combination of parts that come together to create some kind of magic contraption that could never be mass-produced. I can't believe that I have not been here before. As I understand the excellent outdoor area is only open during nice weather (which makes sense), so maybe I just have not had the impetus, but you can bet I will be going back for some wonderful summer evenings. We stopped by around 4pm on a Sunday afternoon and the place was hopping--live music with awesome open mic for those in the crowd with talent (no joke, this was some of the best blues i have heard in a long time) and $3 beers (24 oz PBRs and other assorted good deals)...with NO cover!!! The bar tender seemed a little annoyed that my party of 5 did not know what we wanted immediately, but other than this it was great (all the other workers and patrons were friendly). I only stayed an hour or so, but next time I will clear my schedule so that I can stay much, much longer. read more

Oh. My. God. This place. It's the mother church of live music in Kansas City for my money. Or at least the kind of music I like to listen to. Directions: past the massive power plant spewing out polluted steam, down the wrong side of the tracks, past the gnarly looking fields where surely a body or two has been dumped, watch out for the worn out sofa someone illegally dumped not quite in the ditch, slow down over the bumpy tracks and be prepared to wait 20 minutes for the train, past the riverboat casino that has nothing to be with really being a boat. Got it? When you're pretty sure you're lost and there couldn't possibly be a business down here look for a music venue underneath an overpass and next to train tracks. This place is a country song waiting to be written. You can't build places like this. They're just slowly born this way over time. I love this place and the bands that play here. Any place that holds a national act concert and charges $3.50 for a tall boy beer is worthy of a 5-star review in my book. I've been here twice. Once for a Yelp Elite event last year and I saw Eric Johnson live in concert here. It's an intimate yet great venue for seeing GREAT live music. They also have a kitchen here which I did not get to try out, but it's good to know there is hot food available if you have a hankering for some vittles. I did get a look at a menu. It seemed like a lot of fried food and burger type stuff. I'm sure it's perfect for a drinking environment and live music. If there is an obstructed view or bad seat in the outdoor venue, I certainly didn't see it. There is also a separate inside bar as well as a retail shop . I really enjoyed the stage set up and being able to hear everything crystal clear as well as see from the 2nd story balcony where we were sitting. I would happily come back to this venue to see live music any time. I really enjoyed the set up, the sound, the performance, and the drink prices. T'will be a short review, based on a fairly short one time visit. :) Most of the other reviews cover the 'facts' you need to know. I liked Knuckleheads. Went with some friends to see Blackberry Smoke, and I wasn't one bit disappointed. Drink prices were not nearly as high as I thought they'd be, and we even had beverage service on the upper deck outside, on a very regular basis. The bleachers would not be my first choice of seating, but I'll just have to get there sooner next time. I wouldn't want it to be any more crowded upstairs either. We even sat inside for awhile to cool off, and we still had a clear view of the band and the stage. There are TVs scattered around to see the act as well, but I'm not there to watch TV. The outside bartender and our waitress were friendly. We'll leave the service comments at that... Thankfully my friends were navigating the trip! There are a few turns I was glad they warned me about ahead of time. When people say the trains are right there, they mean RIGHT THERE! They do go pretty slow, but lots of whistle blowing at times. I thought the cover charge was fair; it's slightly cheaper to buy ahead of time, even with a few dollars fees, but they did have a higher cover at the door. The opening band was very good, and I enjoyed them quite a bit. I need to get back in the swing of seeing more live local bands. read more

When you drive on up, you think divey biker bar. Well, this is partially true. Note that most of these bikers are well past middle aged and heading towards the age where they can get discounted coffees at McDonalds. However, this is truly a hidden gem in the Bottoms. This is a great venue if you like blues or jazz. They have seating indoors and outdoors and at least three stages. We came on a Sunday, when they had an open jam (where anyone can come on stage). They had quite talented and entertaining bands come on up and we had a really good time. There is NO cover except for specific shows. This venue is huge and you don't really note the scale until you enter. They can seat a LOT of people! Looking for booze or food? Step on up to the bar or the kitchen. There is no wait service here. Prices for both are VERY inexpensive and the kitchen menu is rather extensive for bar food. The food is decent, but nothing to write home about. If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke sit by the stage away from outdoor bar area. I'd say about 80% of those outdoors were smoking and there were more people sitting outdoors compared to indoors despite the band being inside. However, there is a good size bar outside. Of note, some people were smoking ecigarettes inside, but we only smelled the "vanilla" scent. If you are looking for a young crowd, this is not the place. I'd say the median age was 55 or so. They also have TV's in case you want to watch the game while listening to the music. Plan your exit and parking well, as there are train tracks nearby and you don't want to get cut off from your ride. They have quite a few lots and plenty of street parking as well.
