Service could definitely use a tune-up. We sat down after we ordered our food. We could only fit one number on that metal clip so we put the other number right on our table where the waiter could see. Well the waiter got super pissed at us! With the most major attitude I have ever seen in a restaurant, she proceeded to harass us about why we don't have both numbers on the clip. We ordered 2 breakfast plates, one with spam and the other with Portuguese sausage. On my most recent visit, I discovered that they no longer accept cash. Card only, and of course the first thing that pops up is a tip screen with suggested tips of 15, 18 and 20%. I always tipped before, but nothing like 15% because you have to stand in line to order, and once your food is delivered, you're on your own. The food is pretty good, the same as always, but I feel that if they want the full service tip, they need to provide full service. With a little coconut syrup on the side...sigh...delicious and so cheap! I had meant to just have those, because who am I kidding, how many carbs do I really need? Well apparently the answer is "more" because as I was waiting at the table I saw sides of fried rice floating by. They looked so good I high-tailed it up to the counter to put in a side order. To give our local restaurants business, I ordered bacon along with two other full breakfast plates. The person at the counter didn't ask me any questions on how I wanted it done. Came home and opened the container only to discover that I paid for pieces of the most dried unappetizing "bacon" that even my dog wouldn't eat. I should've known better and state specifically how I wanted the bacon cooked, however, I would also think that part of good customer service is to always ask the customer how they'd like it cooked so if it's prepared that way, the customer has no one to blame but themselves. Disclaimer: I know the family that owns the Koa Pancake House franchise! That's right, it's a chain, with I think five locations all over the island now (you guys have done great for yourselves, congrats!). The original stands in Kaneohe, where I grew up. I have fond memories of dining at the flagship restaurant with my family, sit-down-and-eat style. I remember having a hard time choosing between the yummy chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes (actually, come to think of it I think you could get both!). This must have been a LONG time ago, since honestly I don't even really like pancakes much these days :P. As such, when I checked out the relatively new Hawaii Kai location recently, I instead went with the fried rice and portuguese sausage. My order was pretty good, but I found the fried rice to be a little too salty and couldn't finish it even though I was hungry. My friend likewise could not finish his loco moco, which I noticed was way drenched in that brown gravy... like, "want some rice with your gravy?" kine. Sodium overload. Maybe I should have gone for the pancakes, after all. I mean, it is in the name of the place and all... 'doh. But generally, I think this place is a good option if 1) you're breakfasting on a budget (all the prices are very reasonable) and/or 2) you don't have a lot of time, as the self-order/serve process up at the front makes things quick. I always order the French toast, once I've ordered the waffles with strawberries (never again) they used those canned strawberries in that awful syrup, which just made everything soggy and messy! Most of the times the tables are always sticky! So make sure to wipe it before you sit down. They give you a number and you wait at the table for them to bring out your food! Only strange thing is the people standing waiting to order are literally breathing down your neck because the cash register is sooo close to the tables. I counted around ten dime-sized ultra thin slices of deli ham in the mound of rice. That's all there is to their fried rice. I might as well have just ordered plain rice. Everything else that we ordered (eggs, sausage, pancakes) were just average. If someone had served this to us at work, I would have guessed that it came from McD's. The service was quick, and the staff comes around to serve water and clear your table. But, while I would really like to give this place a positive review, I can't honestly say that I felt like I got my money's worth. read more

Prices are good for the amount of food (got a loco moco for lunch and it was only $6.xx for this huge 1 hamburger patty, a large scoop of rice and gravy. I've also tried the eggs and meat, omelette's, salads (which is just head lettuce so I'd skip this) lunch sandwiches and pancakes and they were all good. My only gripe is with the lunch sandwiches--why no french fries? Its weird to each sandwiches with country potatoes....but I digress. Food comes out pretty fast and hot. This is one of our go to places for breakfast on this side, because the food is pretty good and not too expensive. Yes, the food comes on paper plates and with plastic forks, but it's cheaper than many of the other breakfast places on this side of the island. I introduced my boyfriend to the corn beef hash loco moco, so instead of a hamburger patty, the loco moco has corn beef hash. It sounds different but is actually good! He sometimes will get the Koa moco which has both a hamburger patty AND corn beef hash. I get different things depending on my mood. When I'm not too hungry, I'll get the fried rice with one egg and Portuguese sausage (listed under the lite bite section on the menu). It's around $6.50. I also like the eggs benedicts too. Parking's easy cuz of the big parking lot. The only "con" is that it's difficult to get a table sometimes.
