The food is good but what is not good is when the worker comes by us to check the trash, sticks his hands in the trash can to push it down and then goes right back to work and doesn't wash his hands before touching the rice cooker, scooping out rice, then grabs the plate of food and takes it to the customer. The patty was dry, the eggs wet (water, not undercooked), the fried rice was bland but salty, and an ocean of store bought brown gravy to top it all off. Yikes!! We were greeted at the counter by a very friendly woman, who took our orders with levity and humor, which was nice on a Saturday morning. Me and my toddler ordered -- of course -- pancakes! I had the early bird, which is a steal at $4.95 for three pancakes and two eggs. My wife had the sweet bread french toast. My food was delivered before everyone else's by a long margin, perhaps 10 minutes or so. I get that it's a breakfast kitchen but I still think everything should come out at the same time. The food was fine. My eggs were quite stiffly cooked, and the pancakes were fluffy but not particularly spectacular. Frankly, I expect memorable pancakes from an eponymous restaurant, but I'm not sure I make pancakes any different at home. The french toast was nice, but nothing beats my mom's original french toast recipe. Coffee was good, classic diner-style coffee. It's to bad there's not a really spectacular breakfast place in Hawaii Kai. Kaimuki and Kailua still have the best options, despite the drive. Staff works with back to customers and don't call out orders so if your food is done it will sit and get cold before you know the status. Honestly can't rate anything but the customer service. Walked in and they were busy. 2 tables were filled and 3 others were in line ordering. While waiting I assume the owner can in and told us all to stand on the other side of the establishment to order. So we all moved and we're standing right over the other customers seated and eating. One couldn't get into his seat because of this. Big sign up from says "no substitutes" but should read we don't care. While we waited for one customer to order from the 1 worker taking orders the other 4 employees tied to look busy standing looking at the kitchen window with their backs all toward customers. This is a legit and reliable local diner that can be found through the island chain. Most days you'll find families getting their grind on, and more often you'll find a peppering of solo diners. Everyone knows that when a plethora of solo diners is found at an eatery the food usually is 1. Cheap 2. Fast 3. Consistent 4. Tasty 5. In excess In saying that, Koa is my go-to diner. They have local favorites like vinha'dalhos, Portuguese sausage, and spam. My favorites are the Koa omelette, spam and eggs, and the macadamia nut pancakes. Usually the food comes in about 5 minutes. The only issue you may have with this place is the fact that they don't skimp on the oil or fat. Leave your diets at the door. After hiking Koko Head this morning, our group was disappointed that Moena Cafe was closed. Not wanting to go to Zippy's we ended up here. If you want quantity and don't really care about quality, this is the place for you. It was very busy (perhaps because it was a major holiday) when we arrived and planned on eating outside as there were a total of 12 pax. However, luckily several tables opened so we lined up 3 tables so that we could all sit together. Service was very good. The staff were very friendly and courteous. The food came out quickly and although I was given a number, the staff remembered me and delivered it to my table when I had requested for a takeout. This is where my experience spirals downhill. Appearance-wise the food looked really, really good. Not to mention, the portions were very huge and built an appetite after a vigorous hike. I ordered the mahi benedict and the first bite was good (a bit of egg white and English muffin) but when I cut into the egg, I noticed the yolk did NOT ooze out. The darn thing was overcooked!!! And, when I took a bite of the muffin, it was SOGGY where I was hoping for that crunch after toasting it. Furthermore, the potatoes was HUGE chunks and didn't have the crust I was hoping for. Perhaps I have high expectations for fast food? I was dining with a group of cool people and so hungry that I ended up just keeping my mouth shut and eating it. I was further disappointed when I cut into the 2nd egg and it was overcooked as well. It was like eating the egg from the Egg McMuffin from McDonalds. And I do NOT like Egg McMuffins... I washed down my food with a large orange juice and it was okay. Thank goodness it wasn't watered down. For sure I would have said something... As we were shortly about to leave, the staff at the register came to our table to take away our finished plates / boxes. I was surprised of such great service. Staff was sure trained well. SERVICE: 5-stars FOOD: 1.5-stars I was able to sample the red velvet pancakes that a friend had and it was dry. Overall, this place gets 2-stars from me. Perhaps I came here on an off day. Koa Pancake House has been around in Hawaii for a long time and has tons locations all over the Island so my expectations were kind of high going in. I always thought it was sit down style restaurant but it's take out style. Plenty of selections and different combos so me and my brother decided on a combo with 2 links, 2, Portuguese sausage, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon with 4 pancakes all for under $10.00! Friendly staff, I was a little surprised when they brought everything in Styrofoam containers. Not a dealbreaker or anything just had a different expectation. I immediately dug into my eggs and meats all cooked perfectly delicious. Now it was pancake time! Not gonna lie the pancakes were OK. I guess I'm used to Wailana Coffee House's thick and fluffy pancakes so I was a little bummed that the pancakes not as fluffy kind of like Zippy's pancakes. They tasted ok, not to bad but if your establishment has the words "pancake house" in its very name you would think that the pancakes would be its star item right!?! They serve the pancakes with regular maple syrup at the table but you can also get honey, orange marmalade and coconut flavored syrup at the counter all of which were delicious! Refillable fountain drinks. I gave them four stars because of the combination of service, taste and price. Will I be back, yeah for sure! After the Koko Head hike, we ended up here. I love the toast more than pancakes. I had the mushroom veggie omelette. It's sooo good with mushroom. The toast included two toast and 2 types of jelly (strawberry and grape). Real full after all that. This one is different from the other one because it's order and eat. So I went back to use the "refund" from my previous botched order. Same person took my information, and remembered who I was. The order was ready when I got there, which was great! Except, when I got home and opened it, I only had half the original order, and the pancakes were plain and not chocolate chip as I had paid extra for initially. Aloha all, I haven't changed my review because theres been a lot of inconsistency in the past and the general attitude of the staff hasn't changed a lot. Things are gradually getting better again. The last 2 times I've ordered crepes has been really great. The manager there is finally taking some control of the restaurant and that's a REALLY good thing. I appreciate their efforts as my crepe addiction is something I have to fulfill every Saturday morning and believe me I wouldn't go back if the order continually came out looking like strawberry barf so I can, at this time condone buying the strawberry crepes! Came here not so recently to grab breakfast and choose to dine in. Opted for just the bacon breakfast which came with a generous helping of bacon and pancakes (if you choose it as the starch, 3 medium sized ones specifically) and eggs made to order. This place is an okay option for take out if you're not looking for anything fancy but I have seen much better Eggs Benedict elsewhere. Food: I of course had the Strawberry whipped cream waffles, they drown the waffle with whipped cream, so if you love that then you'll love this lol. Of course the bacon is always delicious and they do give quite a bit for the price which is awesome, some places only give three pieces but Koa pancake house isn't one of those places. What I love about Koa Pancake house is how simple it is. There are a lot of items on the menu but everything is pretty straight forward. It's a casual sit down breakfast and lunch place were you can eat local grinds if you want or your typical breakfasts. They have everything from loco mocos to french toast, pancakes, burgers, and then some. I usually order the sweet bread french toast strawberry or banana and each time it is sweet and delicious. I love the casual and helpful service I've had at this location. I have yet to try a lunch entree here, but I'm sure it's just as good as the breakfasts they serve. I'm such a creature of habit that if I like a restaurant's breakfasts and I'm usually visiting during the breakfast time I will order breakfast each and every time!! And each and every time I've had breakfast at this particular location it has been consistently good!!! I have tried the Denver and Spinach, Mushroom, & Cheese omelettes. Both are delicious! It's generous, sometimes, but does the job to get you content. My family has tried the Mahi Mahi numerous times and that is a very delicious dish if you're craving more than just breakfast items. This is only available after 11 AM as it is a lunch menu item. It's delicious when fried! Unfortunately on my last visit, my boyfriend ordered the New York Steak and it was very disappointing! The steak was pretty burnt on the outside while the meat was cooked well-done, which was fine. But it was so burnt, all he could taste was the pan and burnt outside of the steak, making it impossible to finish. We are pretty sure it was just the cook that day (as it was Thanksgiving Day) because he said it wasn't that bad in the past. Be weary of the steak! The juices are pretty fresh and cheap! Pineapple juice is very sweet and sour and the other juices are good as well. It adds such compliment to any breakfast item you order! Other than that, staff is friendly and the place has a lot of seating. It DOES get busy in the morning so be aware and CALL in the order if you have a chance. My son got the 3 stack pancakes and absolutely loved them. He's hard to please so I hold a lot of weight on that. I got an omelette and also loved it. I had to pay extra for the salsa and didn't realize it didn't come with so that was a bit of a bummer. But it's worth it. Staff was friendly and welcoming in that beautiful way you can only get on the islands. After my friend and I finished the Honolulu Marathon today....correction, 10k Start to Park, we were pretty famished and decided to drive along the Honolulu Marathon runners to get to Koa Pancake House in the Hawaii Kai Towne Center. We were there around 10:30am and placed our order. It's a order at the counter and they'll give you a number and you find yourself a table. When your order is up, they bring your food to you. They are really friendly and the food arrived fast! My friend was pleasantly surprised when she ordered the Grilled Mahi Mahi, which had several pieces of mahi mahi along with two eggs and toast. She couldn't finish it so that was dinner for her later on. I always, and I mean always get the Traditional Eggs Benedict. You could never go wrong ordering this. Mine came with potatoes, which I gave to my friend to take home. November 4,2023 I placed an order online. I went to pick the order up in the time that was given. I was waiting where you pick up orders.... Thinking I was going to get it because my order stated it was ready. It wasn't. One lady states to another girl to say to me I can go wait outside. The girl didn't say it to me...you can tell she didn't have an issue...but the lady telling her did. I didn't go because I didn't want to be outside. It was crowded everywhere either way. Another lady came and paid for her order she waited next to me but then this lady singles me out and tell me to go outside. Where does it state that I have to stand outside to wait for my order. She was frustrated because there was a long line....but that is not an issue for me because they should get a bigger space. I told her don't address just me...address everyone. I said my order stated it was ready. I didn't go outside but I sat at a table but I wasn't going outside because It was packed out there too and I didn't want to be outside. I'm a regular and come a couple times a month for breakfast with my co-workers. As of lately this place has been going downhill. I've waited a long time in the past for food, and this seems to be happening more frequently. This morning I waited almost an hour (48 minutes) for my loco moco. All my co-workers had finished their meal long before I had to approach the workers and tell them the service was unacceptable and that I needed to go back to work.
