It's a "new" dish available. To me, it tastes like teriyaki and curry chicken had a barbecue baby. Great spice level that's about medium (won't pose a threat to anyone who regularly eats spicy). Only thing I didn't like was that it may have been a little too oily and that gets on rice. Bf ordered Katsu chicken. That was okay to me, not the type of thing I would order, but my boyfriend liked it. More on the bland side. Both chicken dishes came with macaroni salad (bland) and a side salad (great dressing! Could it eat all up!). The guy who took our order is great. Super friendly, and asked how our food was. Great value. Portions of the dishes are huge! One order could pretty much serve 2 people. As leftovers, I still enjoyed my chicken! Most of the dishes are $6-9. Bottom line: If I lived in the area, it would definitely be a go to quick eats or lunch spot. This is probably one of the best Hawaiian fast food places that I've ever been to. I've become a regular for "Take-Out/To Go", especially since I've always on the Go-Go. I always order ahead, just because I'm usually limited for time. They have a decent selection of plates...I switch between the Koala Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken and Beef Teriyaki plates. You get two sides, usually green salad and macaroni. I skip the rabbit food and double up on the Mac. The staff here are very friendly. Ok...who knew Galt could have a pretty good Hawaiian restaurant for a reasonable price too! I ordered the 3 item combo with oatmeal fish, oatmeal shrimp and koalabear chicken. The plate included macaroni and coleslaw salad and rice. I actually liked the oatmeal breading on the fish and shrimp. It gave these pieces a great crunch and different taste from regular breading. The breading didn't actually taste sweet or anything, so it didn't mask the flavor of the fish and shrimp. The chicken was actually tender and cooked right. There was a slight East Indian/curry flavoring on this chicken, but it didn't overpower the whole dish. I did appreciate the sauce bar because I dipped the chicken in the katsu and teriyaki sauce for added flavor. The macaroni salad was actually pretty good with added flakes of tuna fish. I would probably ask for double helpings of this over the coleslaw salad if I came back. The coleslaw salad had a good peanut flavor but was so watery that I didn't like it. I wish the rice was a little more tender and sticky. Being Asian, I am picky on my white rice and I felt like the rice was still undercooked in some parts. This place is great! Everyone should try it at least once and decide for themselves. I have been recommending it to friends all week! We stopped here once a few weeks ago and walked up to the doors but didn't go in because we were looking to sit down and eat at this place appears mostly take out. I am so glad we went in the second time though. The girl at the counter was adorable and sweet as can be. She explained the menu, made suggestions and could not have been more helpful. Customer service doesn't get more awesome. There are a few chairs and tables/bar to sit at and eat but this place is clearly meant for take out, so I recommend that's they way you do it. Even though we ordered to dine in, the food still came in Styrofoam containers. The environment if you do dine in however is bright and very clean! We wanted a little of everything and we were not disappointed. We even tried every single type of musubi :) I loved the Katsu chicken (my boys thought it was a little dry by itself, but I love it that way! Besides, that's what the sauce is for!) and the koala chicken is fantastic with a slight hint of curry. The lemon pepper was just ok, tastes like you make at home but still better than cooking for yourself. Did I mention I don't like macaroni salad and I ate all of theirs? Probably the only kind I have ever enjoyed. Even the rice was good. If you're on the fence you really should try this place. You won't be disappointed. Oh and yelp gave me an offer for a $6 lunch special when I checked in on my mobile app. I didn't use it but I just wanted to include the info for any of you bargain hunters out there. FIrst of all, I'd like to establish that I am NOT an owner or an employee of the place. I work at the local bus service (you can look me up). I have to say that the more I read the negative reviews about this place, the less they have to do anything with the key aspects of a restaurant (food quality, customer service, cleanliness). I mean come on, big points off for mislabled bathroom faucets? (which I hadn't notice as I washed my hands just fine in there). Warning people for inapppropiate music? I only heard house/pop music while eating in there with no f-bombs to speak of. Now let me get to my experience in there. First thing I have to note is that the employees in there are incredibly friendly. I ordered take-out the first time and dined-in the 2nd visit. In both cases, they took care of me with great attitudes and smiles. My orders had no issues or missing items or anything of that nature. I actually came here when it was JJ's Hawaiian Grill and I have to say that back then it didn't really stand out among other Hawaiian BBQ places. Then this place opened up with their nice looking handout menus and I had to try it. Now Galt isn't exactly known for having outstanding restaurants, but this place is a major exception. In fact, this place is surprisingly better than any other Hawaiin BBQ place in Sacramento, where I live. Other reviewers seem to not be familiar with Hawaiian-style BBQ. The cabbage slaw is normally served in places like this, although they're usually placed under the meat and above the rice. This place puts it separately and with a nice dressing that tastes great. The rice is the sticky variety you'll find at sushi joints, calrose rice I believe. THIS IS NORMAL. The macaroni salad I found to be really good, as most other Hawaiian BBQ places have stuff that's really thin and runny. The macaroni salad here is coated in a thick layer that sticks to the noodles and I love it. My first made order was of BBQ Chicken and Chicken Katsu (at the recommendation of the employee). I'm not a fan of Chicken Katsu in general so I thought it was only ok, but the BBQ Chicken was great! It was flavorful, tender, and in a large portion. My second visit was an order of BBQ Beef. Again, the meat was tender, flavorful, and in a big serving. I also ordered the Spam Musubi. Some other reviewer mentioned how they didn't like how the musubi was wrapped, and I don't understand because that's exactly how musubi is supposed to be wrapped. Some of the negative reviewers on here seem to not be familiar with how this kind of food is supposed to be prepared, but I have had plenty of experience visiting similar places. That being said, this place is the best I've had so far and they've made a regular out of me. I'll be coming back here at least once a week and trying out the rest of their menu. read more

Koala Bear Grill is a great little addition to the Galt area! They have a small menu that specializes in Hawaiian BBQ, but the items they do offer are delicious and are priced well. You can get a 1, 2, or 3 item combo plate that comes with the entree(s) of your choice, a ton of rice, macaroni salad, and a side salad. First of all, I generally gag at the thought of macaroni salad, but their version is actually pretty tasty! It's not weirdly sweet and drenched in mayo like a lot of other places. Probably the first macaroni salad that I've ever really enjoyed! Bonus points for that. As far as the entrees go, I really like both the oatmeal fish and shrimp, but the clear winner in my humble opinion is the Koala Bear Chicken. It's grilled chicken breast with a yummy, slightly spicy, yellow curry-esque coating (not a batter, or even a glaze.. Hard to describe. More of a marinade I suppose). It's super delicious, and unlike anything I've tasted at any other Hawaiian BBQ joint. If you're not adverse to a hint of curry flavor, definitely give it a shot! Lastly, the portions are definitely huge here and I can always get a second (sometimes even a third) full meal from one combo plate. Not to mention that they have the sweetest, friendliest staff that have always served up the food with a great attitude and a smile! Decided to try this place out today I was hungry and not in the mood for burgers, not in the mood for pizza (I KNOW RIGHT!? WHAT!?) The oatmeal shrimp sounded interestingly delicious. and i first had the Spam Musubi at a con when someone in line gave me one that saved my life! so i figured why not. So i get 4 of the Spam Musubi, and 6 of the oatmeal shrimp. These things are pretty delicious. the Musubi has some sauce between the spam and rice (The ones i had at the con didn't) These where good, if only 1 of them had the seaweed. They ran out before they made the last 3 which was cool. The Oatmeal shrimp are freaken delicious! nice and crunchy! I wish this place existed when I was in high school. Okay, so I just made myself feel a little old but I gotta be honest- this place would have been a great addition to lunch options back then. So my lady tells me to grab some food before coming over. She called it in. I get there and the lady say's $45 dollars. Hmmmm she hands me a bag, I think to myself wth, than she goes back and grabs 3 more bags. Then she is kind enough to tie the bags and show me how you just pull it when ready to grub, Cool. I was a first time customer to Koala about 2 weeks ago, not any longer. I ordered two 911 rolls and they tasted pretty decent and I enjoyed the price and location(less than 10 miles from my house) so I figured I would come back. Inside this shop is crowded, awkward seating and unpleasant staff. On a separate day, I ordered the same order but forgot I left my wallet at home(must admit I was running a little late due to some traffic) so I would have to go home and return, which i'm already into 20minutes into my "it'll be ready in 15 minutes" order. So, I called them asked them if they could accept my card # only, they said no they have to see the card, so I told them I had a picture on my phone of the card on both sides if things happen like this, they refused.. So, i understood that. I requested the employee to re-prepare my sushi order, since I didn't want warm fish. She acted for 2-3 minutes like she didn't know how to respond to my request, literally as if she wasn't understanding my English. So, she told me she would call me back after she asked a manager?????? Didn't get my phone number?????? So I recalled, spoke the with manager who REFUSED to make my order again. "I can't do that". Sorry, but is fresh fish really too expensive on your customers that would return? Instead of remaking 2 rolls and having my as a long term customer, I will not be returning. Had nothing but compliments on the food we ordered for family get together. My family are a bunch of hungry opinionated people so I was a little worried about getting food from here since I never tried it before. I took a chance, it paid off. I called 3 days prior to place the catering order. The employee confirmed I ordered enough food and took a 50% deposit over the phone. I ordered medium size of the following; BBQ beef, teriyaki chicken, white rice, Mac salad and green salad total was $210 after tax. The order was ready at the time we agreed on. The employee that took care of me was nice and helped me take the food to the car. The food was very good and fresh. The teriyaki sauce and salad dressing was given on the side. I did find a quarter size bone in the chicken. Thank goodness it was on my plate and not on a kids or someone else's. Minus a star. It was plenty of food for 30 people and 5 kiddos.
