The ambiance is always great here. Definitely a place to come and experience a true midtown vibe. The staff was great. Attentive to the entire party. Available when needed. Those are the PLUS moments here. The drinks however were not great. The lychee martini lacked a kick and gave off a more cranberry juice vibe than a cocktail, the Koi martini also came off as a glass of flat wine. The fish entree dishes were flavorful but didn't seem to penetrate throughout the fish. The seasoning sat on the top layers and in the vegetables so you really had to mix your food together to get the best experience there. The fried rice was extremely over cooked and taste as if they scraped it from the bottom of the pan but I think that was the idea they were going for. Grrrrr... Yelp Reviewers, I didn't want to believe you but I have clicked my red shoes together and I now do. I had such an incredible experience at Koi in Las Vegas and I thought it would be replicated here. The restaurant is just off the hotel lobby of the Hotel Bryant. And, there must be a contentious relationship with them because it is very clear where you the restaurant goer are to go- including which of the many doors to touch. I was no where near as hip as the crowd in the place. In fact, there were young teens that fit in more than I did. I was quickly seated and began to wrestle with the QR code to upload the menu to my phone. It must have appeared that I brought my rotary phone from the kitchen back home because I could not get it to load. I caught the eye of one of the staff who wiped a menu and handed it to me. I ordered the Shishito peppers as a starter- ah, it was in Vegas that I fell in love with, pun intended, the roulette wheel of spiciness they have. They came out very hot! I think it would be more enjoyable if the pieces were more bite sized. -salmon carpaccio with truffle: this was amazing. The waiter saw our tip and suggested we add more which made us feel uncomfortable since tips are optional anyways. Came in just for a drink and appetizer.I had a Yuzu flavored cocktail with rum that I think was a twist on a Caiparinha or Mojito. Visited Koi with a few colleagues for a business lunch we were happy with. Typical NYC nightlife ambiance from the moment you enter the Bryant Park Hotel. I came in expecting a Nobu-esque experience albeit slightly sobered down for the midtown corporate crowd. Appetizers: We ordered the shishito peppers - hard to mess this one up. The soy glaze had a bit more of a zing than most other places. Koi crispy rice was the standout. From Blue Ribbon to Momoya, you can find variants of this dish that fail to match up to Koi's take. We ordered the tuna and yellowtail - I enjoyed both with a slight preference for the tuna since it had the jalapeno kick. We also tried the potstickers, which were good but nothing to write home about. Sushi rolls: The Double Tuna roll is a must-do for lovers of this fatty fish. I expected tuna sashimi on spicy tuna to be excessive, but the chef does a great job of ensuring that you get more tuna without overpowering the wasabi and rice. The combination of snow crab and black truffle on the Northern Lights roll was an unusual yet delectable treat to my taste buds. We also ordered an array of classic American sushi rolls - spicy tuna, shrimp tempura etc. Entrees: Miso cod by far the best dish here. Matches up to Nobu's; slightly less sweet but that's a pro in my book. Overall, Koi is a good stop for sushi in midtown. Came here for a work dinner with a big group. First they sat us at probably one of the worst tables right in front by the windows. I get it we were a large group but not a great start. We had the fixed menu and it was hit or miss. The tuna tartare on crispy rice chip was very good and the cod was delicious but sushi rolls and steak were not good at all. The sushi rolls in particular were almost laughable especially the presentation, like they were made by an amateur, not the caliber I would expect for this kind of restaurant. I'm normally not a fan of places like this, fancy and expensive, but I came here for a work event and I'm not a person who turns down free food! My group was small and had reservations made for early evening but their hosts and scheduling people seemed either very unorganized or have some kind of preferential treatment towards specific kinds of people cause we had to wait a few minutes. The inside is very easy on the eyes. They have 2 areas upon entrance, a small lounge waiting area and the somewhat upstairs to the dinning area. The lounge waiting area also has a small bar to get drinks while you wait. I can say the waitress that served us was very friendly and patient as we took awhile to talk after we ate and check out. As for the food. I was hoping that it was going to be somewhat a good amount of food especially for the price but i should have known that places like these dont do that. I ordered the spiced braised short ribs and was a bit saddened when i got what looked like an appetizer...I cant lie, it all tasted great but it was all gone in a couple seconds leaving me still hungry. I don't give a lot of 5 star reviews. A place has to be consistently excellent on my rating scale. If I've been there once it will get 4 stars with a note that it was excellent but I haven't been there often enough to say that it is excellent every time. Fortunately for me, I've been to Koi enough to say that every experience has been awesome and there's no reason to believe it would ever be anything less. In our most recent visit we had the crispy rice 3 ways, dumplings with edamame filling and lobster tacos. We followed with the spicy tuna roll and rainbow roll. If I went back today I would probably share the same 3 apps and try different sushi. Everything was excellent. The only reason I would try different sushi is because I always change up my sushi order. Maybe next time I look for salmon or crab or eel. I'm sure whatever it is, it will be amazing! Some things to know for your first trip to Koi: Make a reservation on Rezy. Very easy with great reminders etc. Dress is casual. Wear what you like and be comfortable. It is a little on the pricey side. Absolutely worth it. It is on 40th right on Bryant Park. If the weather is decent maybe incorporate that into your trip. Order the same 3 apps that I did! I'm still not sure which is my favorite. Probably lobster tacos. I'm going to try to make those at home. I should also mention that the service was perfect, the atmosphere is dynamic and very interesting and the beer menu is limited to the point of non-existence (I think only 3 choices?). I took my family out to celebrate my mother's birthday dinner last year. Not the first choice I had in mind but all others needed reservations days in advance, while Koi was able to let me have a table reserved the morning of. We were seated in the back corner, understandably we had plain casual wear on but still I'm skeptical of their intent, as throughout the night other tables were still available. Anyways, onto the food. We decided to order family style and share plates. Having eaten at tons of sushi restaurants and AYCEs, I found their rolls overpriced for their quality. Cali roll was $15 for 8 pieces cut, shrimp tempura was $36 for 6 pieces cut. Dragon roll for $26 for 8 pieces cut. Sweet chili shrimp for $32 and 8 pieces cut. The rolls are not bad, just very overpriced for what was delivered. They are what you'd expect at any AYCE buffet or bar sat sushi place. For entrees, we ordered the Chicken Breast that came with a side of lo mein with it. TERRIBLE. Having restaurant experience ourselves this was the worst dish we've had that night, something my mom even commented, "we could cook this better at home!" The lo mein was greasy and the sauce was too salty. The chicken had no juice and wasn't tender, you could tell it was microwaved before plating. We also had the skirt steak which was the winner that night, but again portion sizes are lacking. When asked for drinks, stick to plain water. Sparkling water comes with a $11 a bottle price tag, which I learned when it came to paying for the bill. Possibly a rookie mistake on my part but for a restaurant of this caliber you'd expect either to be on the house no? Or do I have the wrong expectations? Service was great, but again not transparent enough. Food was slow to come out. But ambiance and decor was nice and we felt underdressed. Very dim lighting, chatter, and a range of occasions from dates to business to family outings. Overall if you're here to get sushi, I would avoid them and stick to main entrees, but avoid the chicken. Koi @ Bryant Park Hotel The Roasted Duck Breast Ginger Vinaigrette Roasted Shishito Pepper was a reason to go to Koi. The duck was delicate and tender. The ginger vinaigrette was a perfect match for the duck. Shishito Peppers came with the dish and added to the flavor of the vinaigrette on the plate. However, I wish the Chef had paired the duck with a rice or veggie side. The Chef knows what to pair the dish with. I tried to pair it with a spicy tuna roll, but it didn't quite click. Aside from Koi's delicious food, the restaurant was beautiful and the staff created an extremely hospitable atmosphere. Two other memorable duck dishes that I've ever had were created by Chef Hiro Sone (Terra - St. Helena) and Budi Kazali (Ballard Inn - Santa Ynez). Service was attentive for the most part, although our server suffered a bit of short term memory loss... as in, forgotten who ordered what - required a bit of shuffling dishes... it just reflects poorly on an establishment - who should pride itself in knowing their patrons for the night. KOI offers up quite a menu, starters - shared plates - signature sushi rolls - hot entrees and stand alone hand rolls. We shared everything! -Creamy Sea Bass Tempura! Holy sh*t! This was so good!! Had a few apps and highly reccomend the shishito peppers- though they did have a bit more of a kick to them than others I've tried. We did have a small case of foreign-object-in-food. However, the waiter and manager were extremely apologetic, promptly brought out a new order, and removed the charge. Met a friend and her mom for dinner here last week and it was just as delicious as I remember. Hands down the best crispy rice I've ever had!! So creamy and flavorful!! Even the rice is seasoned perfectly. We started out with drinks-- I ordered a glass of the Riesling. Then we got 3 orders of crispy rice, the double tuna roll and the hamachi fusion appetizer. The hamachi was top notch!! A slight truffle flavor, not too over powering, and beautiful thinly cut yellow tail with a seaweed salad center. Mmmmm I'm drooling just thinking about it. My friend and I both ordered a miso black cod entree and her mother ordered the sea bass and said it was even better than the cod (which I don't know how because the cod was sensational). This review is late but very necessary. Koi was an excellent choice for Mother's Day. Located inside the Bryant Park Hotel, Koi is the definition of sophistication and class. It oozes authenticity. As soon as you walk in the decor is a beautiful burgundy and gold with white accents. Behind our spacious booth was a wall of mesmerizing bamboo leaves. The layout to the restaurant is spacious enough so tables aren't on top of each other and you're free to converse without screaming to hear each other. The service was to die for. Our waitress (I wish I got her name!) was so attentive, but not overbearing. She was quite knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu and took into mind any allergies people at the table may have had. Our water glasses never stayed empty, and we were always updated about when our food would be ready. The dishes we tried were the: - Crispy Calamari Salad: YOU NEED TO GET THIS. I'm obsessed with fried calamari and Koi definitely did it right by adding it to a salad and drizzling it in a citrusy mayo/dressing. Ugh. Delicious. - Koi Crispy Rice: 10/10. It's one of their best selling appetizers for a reason! - Kobe Style Potstickers: Crispy on the outside, tender kobe beef in the inside. Yum! - Steamed Chilean Seabass: I don't even like fish and this was one of my favorite dishes of the night. You can cut the sea bass with a spoon. The quality of this dish really stood out to me. - Grilled Skirt Steak: Now this was my #1. I couldn't stop eating that steak. PERFECTLY COOKED, PERFECTLY FLAVORED. The chimmichurri sauce was an excellent touch. - Grilled Lamb Chops: So honestly, I wasn't too crazy about it but the rest of the table seemed to really enjoy it. The glaze is a little on the sweet side and I prefer savory lamb chops. That didn't stop it from being good though.... I just think the steak was better. - Salmon: Again, I'm not a fish girl but it was pretty good. I'd recommend the sea bass over the salmon though. Koi is a lovely restaurant, just across Bryant park, serving excellent sushi at Bryant park hotel. The place has a nice atmosphere and makes you feel welcome. The service was implacable, quick, warm and professional, not trying to push you to order more. It's an ideal place for a business meeting. We were not at all rushed and were given a nice quiet booth once requested. We have been to Koi several times before and enjoyed the experience every time except for this latest visit. The menu had changed and it was less vegetarian friendly but still a varied Japanese inspired selection. My tofu and vegetable dish was okay as the sauce was flavorful but the veggies consisted of asparagus, peppers and a mushroom and a little bit of overcooked greens. When you walk in the restaurant is quite posh and hiI'll. It is decorated nicely with large chandeliers and a unique bamboo looking covering on the whole ceiling. We had a reservation and the place was not super busy but when the hostess first attempted to seat us it was right in the back in an already crowded area, pretty much a foot away from the tables on either side. We asked to be moved and she put us at a round table with more room. We ordered a bottle of wakatake sake. It was $110 for the bottle and when it was brought to the table it was not properly chilled. The waitress took it and brought it back in a bucket of ice. The menu has a variety of appetizers and small plates meant for sharing , entrees, sushi rolls and sushi/sashimi. We decided to share. We ordered the koi sticky rice with tuna appetizer. It was delicious! We ordered a 2nd one and it was way to sticky....it was hard to chew and was sticking to my teeth. We also ordered the tuna tartare appetizer which was very buttery and seared perfectly. We had the lobster mini tacos which were good. These apps all came with 4 pieces. The tartare was 6 pieces. We then ordered several of their signature sushi rolls. Each one was delicious. We had a rainbow roll and the yellowtail with scallions from the regular roll menu and it was good. We got one bad roll. It was the spider roll. If came out covered with bread crumbs and I know why....underneath there was hardly anything in it! It was supposed to have eel and shrimp, but was pretty much all rice. We sent it back no problem. At the end of our meal, a manager came to our table to apologize for the sake and the sushi roll. She sent a bread pudding to our table. When the bill came the total was $398. A lot expensive for sushi. read more
