First time coming here, and it was about 4pm and we were the only customers there. The service was very fast and tended to us, but I think it would've been nice if they explained what they were doing/pouring for us since I would just ask my friend "wait ok what do I do with this " but that's minor things. I personally liked the overall taste(I got the Tonkotsu soup with Toro beef) and all the flavors mixed well with lots of greens, but my friend said the price was a little more than what he'd expect. Covid review - great outdoor setup. So far, they're only open for dinner from 5:30pm and no reservations. We arrived during the week at 5:30 and it got busy real quick. The set up is very comfortable and nicely spaced out. Each person gets a portable gas stove. Staff checks your temperature upon arrival and each table gets a bottle of hand sanitizer. We all ordered the pick 2 for $21.99 plus $5 wagyu toro and lamb. The cut of beef is different than what they used to serve pre covid. We all thought the meat is thicker cut and tough, not as tender. So happy that they are now open for outdoor dining! I've missed this place! My party and I didn't wait that long.. maybe around 30 mins? For Kokumi standards, it wasn't that bad since I remember waiting 1-2 hours before. Must be because they have a lot more tables now. I didn't really count but I'm assuming around 15-16 tables for outdoor dining? They check temperature before you enter the dining area. Each person gets their own grill (which is nice because I've been to some places where you had to share a pot) and every table was provided a hand sanitizer! So generous of them to provide for their guests as we're all trying to adapt to these new pandemic times lol. There were a couple times when we tried to flag down the waiters, like when they forgot to give us hot drops, or when we wanted more broth, but I'm not going to ding any stars because they're really busy and they're trying. Been here a couple times and the food is really tasty. If it's your first time, they will allow you to try the different soups the have. Service has always been great and I often recommend friends come here. You order by the plate, but the veggies and rice are unlimited refills, UM YUM!! This is the shabu place for my friend and I, every time and all the time. Hands down delicious! But on 12/05/19 Thursday night at 10:00pm, we decided to pop in after work, that's when we got to experience a true nightmare. We got seated pretty quickly and the table was clean. Our orders were taken and then the nightmare begins. The table next to us there were three young kids and, ONE OF THE GIRLS WORKED THERE, was VAPING next to us!!! VAPING!!!!! She would sit down and vape and then get up go into the kitchen with her blonde ombré HAIR DOWN AND LONG BLACK BOOTS, then come out go to the register and then sit back down to vape again. I don't know at that point if I trust the quality of the food that was about to be brought out. She was vaping with everyone at the table and screaming and "F*UCK THIS AND F*UCK THAT!!" Disruptive and disturbing to be honest. The other girl who took our order seemed to be drunk because she was tumbling to our chair and her glasses were slanted. And she was holding our hot soup while chit chatting away with the other table also "NO I CANT GET ANYMORE F*UCKED UP, IM F*UCKING WORKING HAHAHAHAHH" I was scared for my own safety! The vape girl next to us started taking shots and soju and would go into the kitchen again and then to the register then to the table to vape again. The other male employees also were standing behind us and just "nah I can't get this f*cked up... I'm still clocked in, maybe later" Slurring away like a dumbass. Loved this place even before the name switch. This review is based off before and during COVID. They have outdoor seating under a huge tent at their parking lot which seats even more people than before. There could be a wait especially during dinner rush so try to get there around 6PM or else you might wait a bit. My go-to is getting their miso soup base w/ the wagyu. I love getting a few drops of their chili oil to make it more flavorful. They used to have unlimited vegetables but not sure about now? I haven't asked during COVID. Haven't been to Kokumi since the name change, but dropped in on 12/6 for dinner. Lucky we got seated before the dinner rush came in. They redesigned their menu and added some new broths. Our waitress, Tiffany, was attentive and friendly. The toro was just as I remember, fatty and tender. The mala tonkotsu broth is a little on the salty side, but perfect to cook meat n veggies in. I think I could finally find the best hot pot place in LA. Kokumi is such an refreshing nice spot for your family, friends and date. My husband and I have been trying many different hot pot spots in LA for years, but could not find the one we both enjoyed. Our favorite hot pot style is Japanese Shabu Shabu, but we both reached to the conclusion so far that we cannot find the same quality, authentic Shabu Shabu that we have in my country. So we started to explore more of Americanized hot pot places where you can taste a fusion of different Asian countries' hot pot styles. Some places were too low quality of meats. Some places had a poor taste of broth. Some places had such a poor variations in terms of their ingredients. Well, we don't have to worry about those any more. The hot pot in Kokumi has such a great variety of ingredients, generous amount of meats, many choices of broth. I ordered the mild spicy fire crab broth with 2 choices of meat, which were beef and lamb. The spicy level was just a little bit hotter than I had expected, but that spiciness increased my appetite. I did enjoy the herbs they add on a meat plate. It looks like just a decoration for meat, because they are separated from vegetables plate, but I truly recommend to put those herbs in your hot pot to boil all together. It makes the taste more refreshing and lots of flavors. Also, I am very grateful about their generosity of sesame sauce. The service was kind and attentive. We were very hungry, so we ordered their sushi plate too. But it was obviously too much food after we started to enjoy hot pot. The sushi was delicious, and looked pretty, but the rice was too much and too soft for my taste. Overall we had a great experience here in Kokumi. Was really disappointed with our service last night. firstly, we were so excited they were open for outdoor dining however upon arrival to our table, it was very dirty/sticky with left over residue (which means they didn't sanitize/clean tables thoroughly) and the chairs were disgustingly stained (but they were fabric chairs). We grabbed some napkins from the holder on the table and some of the napkins were dirty too :( .. then we used the napkin and hand sanitizer to wipe down the table and the napkin was very dirty and obviously the tables were not cleaned well or even mildly well. here's the part that really left a sour taste in our mouths. A customer from another table walked by our table while swinging his jacket around to wear, but his jacket sleeves completely swiped over our table and touched all the raw meat on my sister's plate. Usually we wouldn't make a huge deal but because of covid, we don't know if he uses his jacket sleeves to wipe his face, cough, sneeze or even cleans the jacket? So we asked a waitress if she can replace that plate of meat because of what happened and she says okay. Returns with a plate of meat, 5 pieces even though there were originally 6 pieces left, and just says "here" and walks away making us feel like we're being nuisances for asking for a replacement? Then throughout the night she walks around all the tables and asks if they need help but skips over our table? At first I thought maybe it was an accident but it happened more than once so I feel like she deliberately skips over our table and didn't ask if we needed anything. The food itself was okay, but I feel like the soup tasted better before, it was a little watered down this time. The meat quality was good. They no longer refill vegetables, only rice but I'm not upset about this and it's probably due to covid. Overall, cleanliness is very lacking especially during this time. read more

This shabu place is amazing!!! I always love this place since it was called Mokkoji. The servers are really nice and attentive. We went a little early before dinner and it was perfect. There was no wait and we were seated right away. My favorite broth is fire crab. The flavor is just amazing. Their meat quality is also great. I came here with a gf for catch up dinner Tuesday night. I honestly love this place because their service is so friendly. I'm a pretty needy customer and my friend I was dining with was as well LOL. We like a lot of soup, and have a lot of things we always need refilled. Not once did the servers frown, but instead smiled and even made small talk as they were helping us. I've been coming here back when it was Mokkoji, and the food / service has maintained the same high level of quality. I'm personally not a huge fan of Hot Pot / Shabu Shabu but this place is still pretty good to me. You start out by choosing a soup base and your choice of meat. Veggies included are free and there are complimentary refills. Service is great and parking is easy, as it's located in a huge plaza shared by places such as Von's and 24 Hour Fitness. I usually avoid peak hours so there isn't much of a wait, but I can definitely see a line forming when lunch/dinner rush hits. Overall, I'd recommend this if you're in the area. The soup bases are priced individually but trust me it's well worth it to spend. This place also offers refills on the rice and veggies, which includes the greens, purple potato, carrots, and broccoli. Other items you can refill at a +$1 cost. Eating here is a truly fulfilling experience not only is the meat marinated and served with onions and radish but you get the most delicious sauces. The sesame sauce is my favorite it is so good to eat with all components of the meal. Tip - If you really i mean REALLY want a spicy soup ask for the drops. If you've never tried before start with only one or two it is so good but also very spicy be careful! Kokumi is not only a great shabu place but a really awesome spot for sushi as well!! Their hand rolls are to die for at 5 bucks... especially the blue crab Their other rolls cut or hand are so wonderfully prepared. They always come plated so lovely and are totally delicious and fresh. Their poke bowl is another dish you can't go wrong with. It comes with salmon, yellowtail, blue crab, one other shellfish, spicy tuna, with cabbage and a really delicious creamy sauce. It's the best poke bowl I've had in the SGV. Everything is the same ! The heart and soul of Mokkoji is still here but all that's changed is the name. The meats and broth are just as delicious as when the last time I've had it which was probably like 3 months ago. And their veggies are still fresh as ever (still refillable)! I got the tonkatsu fire crab this time with the pick 2 half steak and half angus toro so you'd get both lean and fatty meats which is only 19$. I'd recommend asking the servers how the meats are today because each batch of meats are slightly different so this way, you won't be thrown off if you order the steak and it's not as lean as you'd expect. 10/10 would recommend, customer for life. This is our go to Shabu place every time we visit LA (from San francisco). I get excited every time we come here because the Shabu here is quite a different experience than ones in sf.
