Definitely love the broth options and quality/quantity of meat they give for the price. Their goma is top notch as well. Seems like we forget about this place, until we want Shabu but I want broth other than the basic miso, tomato, etc from one of our go To's. The difference is service for sure. It's not bad, but they always seem to be short handed. At least they have a sign up front noting that now as you sign in. Only one person up front and looked like just one in back Tuesday night. Dining is inside now as the tent seems to be gone for good. They had it for quite some time after covid, but all things must come to an end I guess. Building is harder to find than I remember as they don't have a sign up and is sandwiched between a couple other businesses with signs. Good luck getting new customers. Anyway, they seem content with the mostly regulars inside. They do have a special going for $12.99 with limited meat options and only OG broth, which is a good deal if you don't like soup, just dipping, but the whole table must order the same and no substitutions allowed. For us, we went with spicy miso and fire crab with Kokumi wagyu for me and prime and stock combo for my GF. There was a ton of meat! We ordered the large, because it said 8 vs 12 pieces of meat for reg vs large which didn't seem like a lot, but as you can see from the pics, they don't count their pieces :) miso is a little eatery to start until it cooks down, but the fire crab was flavorful from the start. Will be back.

Shabu shabu special is great and about $15 per person. I enjoy their miso & tonkatsu broth. Fresh veggies and a good serving of beef with an order. Really enjoyed their sesame dipping sauce and ties the meal together.

My best friend and I were looking to avoid a 1 hour wait at boiling point on a Saturday night. So we decided to give Kokumi a try. We frequent this place before when it was Mokkoji. And we are glad to report that they have the same fire crab broth that Mokkoji had and the meat quality here is exceptional. Entrees: Fire crab broth with Wagyu toro and steak (Pick 2 meats for 27.99) and + 5 for fire crab broth The Highlights: You get a bowl of vegetable, ponzu sauce/sesame sauce and a piece of tofu The wagyu toro was perfect meat to fat ratio The fire crab broth was spicy, tangy, crabby (but not fishy) and savory Areas for improvement: Wish they had better hot sauce other than the chili oil they had on the table The tofu didn't have a stamp like previous restaurant Wish the ramen they put in the vegetable bowl would of been the whole pack first half a pack. Also, wish the tables for two people were a little bit bigger because we barely had space. Also, maybe if they can place some soft music in the background to blend out other people conversations. Tips: *Accepts Credit Cards *Restroom for customers. *Indoor seating only *They sell wine, beer in bottles and on draft. *Same plaza as Blaze Pizza and Vons. *Parking lot is free and shared with other businesses

It's hard find a shabu place with good sukiyaki broth and I'm glad this place is still around. I came here with one friend on a Friday night and even thought the restaurant itself is small, it wasn't crowded at all. I'm surprised it isn't more popular. I love their fire crab broth, it so unique and much more flavorful compared to other shabu places I've been too. It's spicy, sweet, savory, and comes with some crab pieces too. Even their sukiyaki broth is really good, tastes as good as the one in Momo's paradise. I ordered the Duo broth with Wagyu Toro large and it was filling. The soup broths at Oseyo, Nambemono, and Jazz Cat hotpot are mid compared to this place, but have comparable meat quality and portions. Very nice casual place to have dinner if you're craving some fire shabu.

If you're in the Arcadia area and craving comfort food without breaking the bank, Kokumi's $12.99 shabu shabu special is a must-try! We got Fire Crab broth for $4 upgrade and it was well worth it since it was by far my favorite! The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is perfect for both a casual outing or a special meal with friends and family.

Last Saturday around 7 PM, we went to this place. They have a $12.99 special for their basic soup, with options to upgrade to tonkatsu, miso, and other varieties. The soups have generous amounts of meat and vegetables and come with small noodles. I really loved the tonkatsu soup base, but the Mala my husband ordered was too spicy for me. It's hard to find this place since there's no big sign outside. I turned around once inside the plaza, and then I figured out the restaurant is next to Au79 Tea. Good service, thdy keep checking on what we need

I've been coming here every few months and I love the shabu here. Currently they are understaffed so there were some delays but the restaurant was completely full when I went in on a Friday night. This style of hot pot is a larger individual pot and the meat selection is higher quality as well as the soups and additional add-ons. My favorites are the Kokumi and I always pick the Tom Yum soup that comes with 3 shrimps. There's mainly bench/booth seating but if you're by yourself you could sit by the bar as well.

    All day special $12.99

Tried their all day $12.99 special which comes with plate of beef ~10 pieces decent quality for the price, plate of mixed vegetables, rice, and their OG broth. Service was quick and kind. It's a darker lit interior, one line of tables, not too cramped. For $12.99, it was a pretty good deal! The soup was nice and sweet to drink. Beef was sliced well. Good mix of kale, cabbage, lettuce, mushroom. If you're looking for a quick meal or eating alone this can be a good option! Their menu also consists of higher quality meat cuts like wagyu which are much higher priced. Parking is free and part of a larger plaza that includes Vons, LA Fitness, and 99 ranch next door

A cozy dinner vibe. Kokumi offers variety of broth, meats, and adds on. Service is A tier. Very little staff but it gets the job done. Soup base I got was Firecrab- spicy and savory came with half a crab. Wagyu toro beef is a must try super tender and soft. 4 swishes in your broth is all you need ! One of my favorite hotpot location for a late night dinner.

Kokumi is one of my favorite shabu spots strictly because of the Fire Crab Broth. Mokkoji is too far from the 626 so I have to come here and lately they have been super short staffed with one person working during dinner hours and he seems to be really stressed out every time. Today I ordered the small regular sized portion of the half and half zobu and rosu and while the meat quality is really good, I feel like the portion is so small with how thin the meat is , and when it is cooked, it runs out quickly. Unfortunately there is not free refills on the veggies or maybe just the mushrooms? Before I used to ask for extra free of charge but I guess they charge now! The fire crab broth is amazing!! You get the spicy seafoody taste with the mix of sukiyaki and its so unique that alot of other places dont have. Also the sesame sauce is the best ive tasted. While this place is pretty pricey, its satisfying every time. I need to start coming when they have the deals to not break the bank and still satisfy my cravings.

    Wagyu set for 2
    Toni L.

I need to start this off by saying, why have I not eaten here any sooner!? *face palm* My boyfriend and I were both craving shabu so we visited on a Saturday night knowing there would likely be a long wait time. Location - Located on Baldwin and Naomi, same plaza as your neighborhood Vons. There's an ample amount of parking so that's one less thing to think of. Wait time - Surprisingly less than ten minutes at 8PM on a Saturday night. Half of the tables were occupied. If you want to get seated faster, eat at the bar. Service - You are greeted upon entering, quickly attended to and server was courteous. Food - We ordered the wagyu set for two which included a sampler (seafood), wagyu sushi, 2 different types of wagyu, 2 vegetable sets, rice, dipping sauces and 2 macaron ice cream sandwiches. Let's break it down. *Wagyu sushi - I can only eat beef if it's cooked medium well (I acknowledge that I'm getting booed for this. I know, I know) so my boyfriend had no problem savoring both. His expression spoke volumes. *Wagyu meat - Can you say quality meat? I don't need my molars for this. lol! The quality and quantity of meat you get for the price is incredible. It felt like we barely made a dent half an hour into the meal. You need to come with an insatiable appetite. I had to take breaks to consume 1/3 of the meat. Don't forget about the delectable condiments (soy sauce and sesame dips) they make these in house! *Vegetable set - This is not refillable. I was initially disappointed since I thought it wouldn't be enough but I underestimated the amount of food on our table. Other than veggies, you also get half a serving of instant ramen and some glass noodles. *Sampler - Raw seafood (shrimp, scallops, etc) - I'm deathly allergic to seafood so I can't comment on this but my boyfriend ate it all. *Broth - We ordered tonkatsu and sukiyaki. The latter was too sweet for my liking but not unbearable. There is a fee for upgrading broth to anything other than their OG kelp broth. *Macaron - The staff gave us an extra macaron so we left with three. Pistachio, chocolate and the free mango macaron were refreshing. Pistachio was the best while the mango honestly just tasted like sugar and cream. Price - Menu shows roughly $116 for the wagyu set for 2 but there is an extra charge for any broth other than their OG kelp+shiitake broth. We also ordered a cup of tea. The final bill came out to roughly $180. This is a wonderful date place if you're looking for a quaint and relatively quiet dinner in SGV.

    Fire crab w/ waygu toro
    Connie L.

I love this spot because of the soup, their fire crab was fire. It is sweet & spicy. Very flavorful. The toro melts in your mouth, it is on the fattier side but I like it more than lean meat. They give a good amount of vegetables. Overall the fire crab is a must try! It is the best one to pair with my meat & veggies. We came on a Sunday night when they are short staffed but we were short on the service we were getting.

Fire crab soup (bottom meat is half/half regular size) so good
    Lina T.

I LOVE fire crab soup. Although I won't say this is my favorite place for it, it was a good option that is closer to me. The broth was a bit too sweet for my liking, but the spice was a great counter balance to it. I should've asked for some lime to squeeze in there, but def would get it again! I got the regular half/half of prime and steak. I personally don't like my shabu meats too marbled bc it's a bit too fatty for my taste. This was perfect and more than I thought it'd be because the slices were decently sliced! The veggie bowl on the side was filled with the basic items (cabbage, kale, spinach, ramen noods, potato, etc.). The sauces included were ponzu and sesame. Green onion, spicy radish, and garlic were also included on the side. Note: they have ghost pepper drops you can add to your soup too!

    Ask the Community - KOKUMI

This place is listed today as having outdoor seating. Is it still available? If it is, is it covered or heated? How many people can sit there? / April 10, 2023

It's a large covered tent with heat lamps so it's nice and warm. I've eaten there while it's pouring outside and it's totally fine. There are two sections. The front one has 6 tables I think, not sure about the back one.

    Open for Thanksgiving 2022?

Are they still doing outdoor dining?

no they are indoors now and it is very nice inside i like the ambiance

Is this place all you can eat?

    no, set menu!

Is the Korean fried chicken still available for order?

    They have chicken wings

Are u guys still busy on Saturday?

It's not that long a wait anymore, I was sat immediate the past few times I've come.

I've seen tables and tents with their logo set up outside for a couple weeks now. Does anyone know if/when they're opening up outdoor dining?

Hi, they just opened dine-out on Monday, Sept. 28!

    Do they have AYCE?

Ditto on No AYCE AND as of 11/2020 they no longer offer free refills on veggies. There will be a $3 charge

Why did Mokkoji changed its name to KOKUMI?

Owners decided to part ways so this location changed their name while the Irvine one will stay Mokkoji. Fate of Rowland Heights location TBD

Parking can be tight during busy hours, and phone service felt a little rushed during dinner time. Togo orders must be ordered online. The premium chirashi dinner comes with a generous portion of rice and a great variety of fresh sashimi, while the deluxe sushi dinner is the perfect amount for my husband. The rice is perfectly seasoned, and the fish tastes incredibly fresh. The uni stands out. It was buttery, clean, and not fishy at all, which says a lot because I normally don't order uni. There are limited booth seating (about 4 booths), one larger table, and roughly a dozen counter seats. We were a party of 4 with another group of 3 expected at the counter, so we were told next availability would be 7pm. But the owner (also the sushi/master chef) stepped in and offered to squeeze in an extra chair for us at the bar. We happily said yes, and that pretty much set the tone for the night. The ambiance is a cute, homey Japanese-style spot. It's calm and quiet enough to actually have a conversation, which I really appreciated. The owner was also cracking jokes throughout the night and kept everyone entertained, which made the experience feel even more personal. Food highlights: * Eihire (seared stingray fin) - 9/10. Great drinking snack, just wish there was more. * Grilled Angus beef tongue - 9/10. Tender with a really good jalapeño sauce. * Hokkaido uni tray with roasted nori - 10/10. The mashed potatoes and roasted veggies on the side were . * Deep fried eel with ponzu - 7/10. Decent, but didn't stand out compared to the other dishes. * Sashimi (amberjack, hamachi, toro, sweet shrimp) - overall great. The sweet shrimp and fried head were 10/10, but the hamachi didn't quite match the rest. Also wish they gave more ginger upfront. * Roasted 5 kinds of vegetables - 7/10. Tasty but a bit pricey for the portion. * Sea snail - the only dish we wouldn't reorder. Not bad, just not our preferred style. Service was excellent. Our server gave great recommendations, kept our water filled, and checked in often without being overbearing. This is a 5-star spot largely because of the owner. Super down to earth, funny, and clearly passionate about both the food and the experience. Parking is free in a shared lot with other businesses. It's a decent size, so should be manageable. Definitely recommend making a reservation (they only take phone reservations)... but even if you don't, there's a good chance they'll still find a way to take care of you. I'd definitely come back to try more dishes.

The waitress made suggestions about which dishes she personally liked & we ordered whatever she suggested, along with some of the things we thought looked good. *7/10 Toro w/ seaweed *8/10 Moriwase (chef's selection of sashimi) 2 each of 5 different sashimi. There was one cut I did not particularly care for. *7/10 chicken wings *10/10 Beef tongue-- Tender, but firm. Delicious, a must try! *10/10 Ankimo-- creamy and paired well with the ponzu and fresh seaweed *10/10 Fried Seabass-- they served the entire fish, which is rare. *10/10 Sous-vide Duck breast-- must try! *10/10 Nikomi stew--simple, but delicious! *10/10 Matcha Oolong Panna Cotta-- subtly sweet with a smooth texture. It was so good, that we ordered two! The only reason that I only gave it a four out of five stars is because the service was slow. All of our dishes, came out in time, but no drink refills were given and the server never came back to collect our check for payment. So we had to walk it up to them ourselves. For a small space, with three servers, it shouldn't be hard to attend to all the customers. The menu can be pricey, but food is delicious! Along with exceptional service, eating here is worth it.
