The food was pretty good. But the interior is way too old to the point it looked a little filthy. I personally had a hard time consuming the food because of it. Took an out of town visitor and I was kind of embarrassed I took her there. Delicious homey Japanese teishoku. They are known for their tempura, which is always light and crispy. My personal favorite is their Hamburg steak in Demi glacé. The portion is good and the patty is very flavorful. All sets come with rice, miso soup (which is one of the best I've had), and pickles. There is also a variety of seasonal appetizers available. I recommend you to put up a sign that says we don't like children slamming the table that could leave scratches and noisy kids are not allowed. If I saw a sign I would have kept an close eye at my child as he is a 2 year old to make sure no damage was made or left the business knowing it may be an issue. We've had only lunch here several times now. There are different items available for dinner, so we'll have to try dinner here soon. The Eel bowl & Pork cutlet with starchy egg sauce are fantastic. I can't get enough of the egg sauce. It's a real Mom & Pop operation, with only the 2 of them running the whole show, so service can be a bit slow, but we try to get there at 11:30, so this hasn't been much of a problem for us. Their hours are a little limited (11:30 - 1:45 & 5:30 -7:45). That is the only negative I can think of. They may be closed, even during business hours, so it's a good idea to call first to make sure that they are open. read more

I had the #1 assorted tempura combo (comes with rice, miso soup, pickles. It was fantastic, light, crispy, with juicy tender shrimp, vegetables, etc. miso soup was great not too salty with great quality "meaty" seaweed in it (not that skimped on soggy/thin overly-soft flavorless seaweed you get most of the time). I also tried the fermented soy bean, which was like a very mild natto served with the fixings that went great with the rice. But my favorite was actually the potato salad oddly enough - the best I've had. It had an amazing umami taste and the perfect texture and consistency that's hard to describe - creamy, dry, and chunky at the same time. And it had cucumber and carrots in it making it very pleasant, balanced, and lighter. I could eat a tub of it and not get sick, and I wish I had the recipe. In fact, for comfort food I left feeling great because none of it was overly greasy or salty. The food was presented immaculately, showed care, and good price for the quality. In going thru my bookmarks, Komatsu was one that's been on the list for a while now. When a friend suggested it for dinner, there was no hesitation. I even sent her a screen shot to show her that I had the place bookmarked. Anyway ... Located on the corner of Crenshaw and Carson - a little off the corner off Carson, in a small plaza. I don't recall what other businesses are in the plaza except for a liquor store. Lots of available parking, and we arrived at opening (5:30). Service was attentive and friendly. There were only three parties in the restaurant, so I can't speak for how it would have been, had they been busy. I ordered the Fried Oyster Combo - comes with Miso Soup, Salad and a Bowl of Rice and Six Fried Oysters - see pic. Yes, that's the combo in the pics. Small portion size. I was happy with both the batter and the taste but definitely needed more food afterwards. Even with the rice, soup and picked veggies; several refills of hot tea didn't help. But still - I enjoyed it a lot. Will I go back? - probably as it's not outrageously priced for the portion size - AND I did enjoy it. It was my first time dining at this restaurant, and I was lucky to secure a table right when they opened on Saturday. Unfortunately, they stopped accepting walk-ins that day, so anyone who arrived after me missed out. I recommend making a reservation in advance. This was a great lunch place when I worked nearby and now it's a wonderful takeout place during covid! Warm, comforting Japanese food. I always get the pork cutlet egg bowl -- the flavors hit all the right notes for me. It looks simple, but it's hard to get that balance, and because they do, it's oh sooo good! I really hope Komatsu makes it through Covid...it's the very definition of a local mom n' pops small business that depends on loyal customers. First time trying this place and I am soooooOo happy that I found this restaurant because it tasted sOooo delicious!!! Of course I came here for their pork cutlet eggs over rice. OMG, it tasted like as if I had it in Japan!!! The pork was pretty tender and the egg sauce was made to perfection. Also the proportion of the pork and rice are perfect. Sauce was flavorful and it is a little salty, but with rice it's perfect! The beef tongue was good too. But it's only 5 pieces. Japanese food is never cheap but it always taste the best!!!! I always passed by this place for the last 10 years and went today for lunch for the first time. It is a Mom and Pop place, and the service is slow as there are only two of them there. But the food is super delicious. For lunch, you should get there right at 11:30 or maybe 12:30ish after the rush is over. read more

Although I had tried over 100 different places in different countries for Katsudon in my lifetime (even making my own once), NOTHING will ever top Komatsu's Katsudon imho: the preparation, the taste, the authenticity, the quality of the black pork, the egg, and everything! Torrance Food Crawl #280 Shortly after this restaurant opened I thought there was a period when it was closed. I would drive by this location in the afternoon and it always seemed to be closed. I wondered if they were even open anymore. Then one day I looked up their hours and saw that they served lunch, were closed in the afternoon, and then they open up for dinner. Oh, that makes sense why it was closed in the afternoon. I was here early on this Friday evening and was about to order some katsudon but changed my mind and got the mackerel. I will also mention that I saw others order some tempura dishes and they looked very appealing. Before my entree I started with Vinegared Mozuku Seaweed. The cup size is small but its very good tasting. The seaweed had become gelatinous in consistency. One has to eat with a combination of chop sticks and sipping. There is an obvious vinegary or marinated tasted, but a very positive one. An interesting item. My entree was the Broiled Mackerel Combo. The mackerel was served mostly intact and looked very appealing. The fish easily flaked off with the chopsticks. It was cooked very nicely and tasted very fresh. Not oily at all the mackerel was very good. The combo also included white rice, miso soup, and a couple of small vegetables on the side. These were good and served as good complements to the fish. The parking lot had decent parking. Service was good. The restaurant was very clean. While there are alcoholic drinks and sodas there are no non-alcoholic beers and no sugar-free sodas; I ended up ordering an iced Oolong Tea. read more

I'd been always wanted to go and I finally did the other day and they were packed!! We ordered tempura meal, chicken karaage and potato salad. It was worth the wait. Tempura was fresh and crispy, one of the best tempura I've ever had. Karaage was as delicious well, crispy and juicy. Potato salad was bit salty but still tasty. Komatsu is Torrance's newest Japanese restaurant! I came here today for lunch and it super crowded. Their lunch menu consists of fifteen items ranging in price $7.95 to $13.95. There are various pork, beef and seafood entrees on the lunch menu. All lunch meals include rice, miso soup and pickles. My friend got the #1.) assorted tempura combo for $13.95 and I got the #5) pork cutlet with starchy sauce. Because the place was packed, it took about 20 minutes before our meals came out. In the meantime, while waiting, my friend and I enjoyed some complimentary barley tea. The servers here were friendly and very gracious with giving more tea. When our orders came out, they were nice and fresh. My friends tempura included various veggies, a small fish and three small pieces of shrimp. My order came with several pieces of crispy pork topped with starchy egg sauce over rice. I tried my friend's tempura and found it to be very good. My pork cutlet was good as well but the pork itself should have been cooked more. It was rather hard. I did like the starchy egg sauce over the rice. If only the pork was more tender, this bowl would have been perfect. The lunch sets here were very fulfilling and we left happy and full. This place was full of Japanese diners when we got here and still crowded when left. I think this is an indication that many others like this place. I am curious about coming back here in the future for dinner because they have a more extensive dinner menu that includes various appetizers like fried chicken and Japanese pancakes. Dinner prices were ok average cost for a dinner meal 11 plus to 15 bucks food was not bad i had the pork cutlet w/ starchy egg sauce not bad at all the miso soup was good not too salty. Pre-Covid, this was a great place to dine in. During Covid, this place is still excellent for take out. Our favorite is of course tonkatsu, but we also love their Kaki entrees. Fried oyster kaki and the fried seafood tempura kaki are both very good. Last time, the lady asked if we wanted to try their new fried chicken, so of course we did. This is the new Komatsu Restaurant location in another strip mall just west of Crenshaw Blvd. It's about a mile west of its old location which was just east of Western Ave. I had a hankering for some Tempura on the way back home, but forgot it was a Monday, and Komatsu was closed up tighter than a drum. I'm reporting the new location to let others know about the relocation. I went to the old Komatsu on 1644 W. Carson St. a while back when it was still in the old strip mall. I went up to the Tempura bar since I wanted to see how the Chef managed his resources & his cooking technique. I choose the prix fixe "Omakase" for a price close to over $40. There were no unusual ingredients at the time I was there such as Wakasagi or fresh water smelt from the northern island of Hokkaido-, or Kanpachi (amberjack) belly, Shiba Ebi which is a type of shrimp where the entire shrimp can be eaten shell & all since the frying makes them crunchy as a potato chip. The standard Tempura ingredients were presented: Satsuma Imo (sweet potato), Ninjin (carrots), Tama Negi (onion), asparagus, Hasu/Renkon (lotus root), Kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), Kaki Age (fritter with bay scallop, shrimp, & onions), Shi-take mushroom, white fish of some kind, shrimp. The portions were small, but nicely presented on pristine white paper. There are three kinds of salt to sprinkle over the Tempura: Salt with green powdered Matcha or bright green just sprouted tea leaf, and 2 kinds of Kaien or sea salt. The chef/owner told us that he was a Tempura master from many years back, and that his was the best Tempura restaurant for miles around. For the amount of what I had paid, and the quality & amount received, I felt this was not the best deal in town. Komatsu's Tempura is rather good, but you can get a darned good Tempura Don from Hannosuke for $14. (Make sure to ask for the Tentsuyu on the side.) Also the Tempura at the humble but delicious & reasonable eatery called Otomi~san has an excellent Tempura & Sashimi combo for about $15. I realize Hannosuke is in a food mall, and Otomi~san is in rent cheap East L.A. unlike Komatsu which is in a higher rent district as well as being a more "formal" restaurant. I may be comparing Owari Satsuma Tangerines to Tangelos which may be an unfair comparison. I will come back on a day that is not a Monday, and ask the chef to present me with more interesting combinations of flavours, ingredients, techniques that will truly test the mettle of his frying abilities as well as his ability to create a cuisine that has interesting & harmonious taste, texture, olfactory components. I get the feeling that I will be paying way more than $40 for this endeavor, but you can't take it with you. Also Sake (sah keh) pairing to the Tempura would add another dimension that would produce new flavour sensations. read more

It was good but not great. Second time around I tried their katsudon, which is a pork cutlet bowl. Again it was good but not great. I prefer otafuku's katsudon than komatsu. -personally I'm not a fan of theit entree to rice ratio. I know Japanese people love rice and all but even I had a hard time finishing my bowl and left good amount of rice left. I ordered the oysters and hamburger steak to eat on my couch in front of the tv. The hamburger steak tasted exactly like how it looked in the pictures, rich and delicious. My office lunch buddies and I decided to try Komatsu since it is close to the office and seems to have a packed parking lot. We were the only non-Japanese speaking patrons. This was a good sign. One of my pals and I had the tempura combo. The food was very good. My other pal had the oysters. He said they were delicious. Everything came with Miso soup. It was good, but either very salty or had msg. I had an msg headache the rest of the day. I would go back, but avoid the soup. My friends claimed no msg like effects from the soup. They also did not have diet Coke. I only drank tea and water, but one of my friends is a diet soda drinker. We thought that a bit odd. One of my buddies thought the tea was high in caffeine. The service was great. The place was clean. Meals are in the $9 to $14 dollar range. For that price, we think Kotosh in Gardena is a better choice. read more
