We arrived just before 11:30am on a Friday and were overjoyed when the signed flipped to "Open" since I guess it's known that you take your chances. :-) The interior feels unpretentious and rustic, with the comfort of an old school charm. A good-sized room for a mom-and-pop establishment. The one server was surly but polite. We were handed menus plus a sheet with their special. We ordered the black pork donburi special and a Hamburg steak plate, plus a side order of scallop & shrimp tempura. I wanted to try the fried oysters but you could only order a full order, so that'll be for next time. Servings were generous and food was delicious, both served with miso soup and a small dish of pickles. The black pork was tender and flavorful, the Hamburg steak was served with a Demi glacé and tempura was light and crisp, not greasy. Not experts on Japanese cuisine but to me, the taste of the food brought fond memories of the my many visits to Japan. This was our second visit here. If I recall, our first dinner was good so we decided to try again. Unfortunately, we walked in and stood there waiting to be seated for several minutes. There were two other diners eating and a cook in the back who looked out and saw us but nobody came to seat us. So we left. What a disappointment. There's no excuse for leaving people waiting like this without even acknowledging their presence, even if you're very busy (which was not the case) or short staffed. It's rude. Good but pricey Japanese set meals with an annoying $20 credit card minimum. The lunch crowd was mostly Japanese. Although this restaurant's only been at this location since 2014, it has a timeless vibe to it which I liked. I was craving hamburg steak with demiglace sauce so I ordered it, for $15.95. It came with rice, miso soup, pickles, and shredded cabbage. The hamburg portion was fine. While debatable, the mushrooms in the demiglace sauce is the "correct" way to do hamburg steak, so I was pleased to see it here, though the sauce was too light for my taste. I was unimpressed with the modest sides that came with the steak, given it was $16 for a lunch meal. When I went to pay, the waitress told me there was a $20 minimum for credit cards, which was not at all obvious from the menu/signage. An unpleasant end to an average meal. The combo I ordered ($14) included three shrimps, a nicely halved fish, and a variety of vegetables. All of the above were tempura fried to perfection, and came with a nice miso soup, rice and pickles. Komatsu has relocated to a strip mall in the north west corner of Crenshaw and Carson. Its fame for katsudon runs rampant throughout the Japanese community only through word of mouth. Komatsu doesn't advertise. At noon, the lunch crowd started filing in. By 12:40, there were no tables left. I ordered the tempura set. My dining companion, a long standing Kyokushin Karate fighter, ordered the katsudon. I had to try his dish, which was perfectly prepared. My tempura set came with rice, soup and pickles. More casual style and also not only tempra they have more variety Japanese food than old one. I went to lunch before 12:00 but packed of Japanese people! we ordered Kurobuta Katsu combo and Temura combo. Both of them are very crunchy and tasty!!! The only problem I had was...I had hard time to listen my friend conversation because I can hear my own tempra crunchy sound than my friend's voice. My newly found love is katsudon. I looked up places in the nearby area and came across this small restaurant located inside a plaza on the corner of Carson and Crenshaw. This place is perfect to grab a bite for lunch, but they are also open for dinner. The inside is small and usually pretty busy. Most customers speak Japanese, so you know it is good, authentic food. I've tried both #4 black pork cutlet with egg and #5 pork cutlet with starchy egg sauce, and I must say while most enjoy the pork with starchy egg sauce, I prefer the black pork with egg. Make sure you specify which one you want because they could easily be mistaken for the other in ordering but are very different visually and taste wise. The black miso cod special was just okay and the hamburg with demiglaze was fairly tasty. The sides are all pretty good. I like the grated yam and cold tofu. This small joint located in the mall of 85° and Daiso is go to spot for anyone looking for a decent Japanese meal. They have a daily special which you can take advantage of and mostly everything on the menu are quite tasteful and highly encouraged to try out even if you do not know what they are. The staffs are attentive and friendly and doesn't bother you more than you'd want them to. I would recommend this place to anyone without second thought. I will be back for more shortly read more

I think I go to Komatsu almost every week for dinner and lunch. Sizes are same for lunch menu and Dinner menu. Servers are very friendly, easy to talk, and smiling! I like Ten-don the most, and I also like Humberg teishoku, and Motsuni!! I keep coming back here and I will go there again next Monday with my friends! This store was slightly tricky to find at night time since their signs are not really lit on the outside. But wow what an awesome menu they have. It's so close to Japanese home cooking and comfort food that I really wanted to order so many things. I had ordered the Hamburg plate which is like hamburger meat with a demi glaze sauce and mushrooms. It comes with soup, rice and some pickles on the side. My friend had ordered the tempura-don. In English, it's a tempura bowl with shrimp and vegetable tempura. Both items came out and I was excited to dig into it. But first, I had to take pictures for my Yelp. I have to say, the tempura bowl looked amazing!! I was slightly jealous that I didn't order that myself. But oh well, if I'm ever back in Torrance it would be worth trying it another time. 1. This place needs some SERIOUS customer service lessons. Example One: My family and I came into the restaurant and stood by the front door...We waited there for 5 minutes. The waitresses did not even acknowledge us at all. She didn't say hello or even told us to wait a minute because they were busy. We had to wave her down and literally get in her face for her to let us get seated. Example Two: When we sat down, it took her 10 minutes to give us a menu. There are NO excuses to take that long to give us a menu. She knows we are dining here, but it seems like she wants us to get fed up with how long it was taking and just leave the restaurant. Example Three: It also took a long time for us to flag her down and tell her that we were ready to order. Example Four: Once we got her attention, we ordered some food. We wanted to order the squid, but the waitress told us this item will take a really long time...so pretty much, she is telling us to not order that item because it's going to take a long time. Look, as we are customers, we can order whatever we want just as long as it doesn't interfere with the closing hours. It was interesting that she told us the squid would take a really long time...because that item was the FIRST dish that came out to us. How ironic. It seems as if she wants us to order simple items and get out. That is NOT the way to treat your customers. 2. The food was good. 3. The price was reasonable. 4. Our entire clothes and bodies smelled and wreaked of this oily smell that was from the kitchen. Just a heads up, be very careful and selective if you want to come here for dinner because they may be very busy...and you may get the cold shoulder from them. Tempura Restaurant in Torrance I stopped by Komatsu since the late afternoon traffic on Crenshaw and Carson was horrendous. I never made it to Komatsu when it was on Carson by Western but I figured here was my chance. Komatsu sits in a strip mall on Carson just off of Crenshaw across the street from a fire station. There is a pretty big sign out front and plenty of parking. Komatsu takes reservations and although when I went it was not busy, I have seen the parking lot full on the weekends. So the interior is pretty plain but don't let that fool you thinking the food is plain. Just like in Japan, when you are hungry for a specific thing you go to that restaurant that has that item, like the Ramen-ya or Sushi-ya etc. I was hungry for Tempura so I went to the tempura-ya. They have have more than tempura like appetizers and broiled fish so if everyone in your group does not to have tempura there are some options. I ordered the number 1 Tempura combo. It comes with miso soup, prepared combo side, and a bowl with a little salt to pinch over the tempura. Also their tempura sauce is house made and is served with a large dollop of grated daikon and an small bit of ginger. The batter is very light and crispy, which is how it should be and the combo came with renkon (lotus root), Kabocha (pumpkin squash), shiso leaf, nasubi (Japanese eggplant), three shrimp which weren't squished into a string and elongated like many places have it, and a small white fish. They have Asahi on draft which is great with tempura. There were only a few other tables but they were all Japanese speaking as well as the chef and the wait staff. We have been craving for some katsudon for quite some time and Restaurant Komatsu did not dissappoint. The place was small and simple and so was the menu options. We liked it that way because it was direct and easy fo us to choose from. And of course, I tried the katsudon - and it was very good! Just one bowl and it was very filling!
