Been 3 times for service and repairs. Overall impressions - honest, competent, reasonable prices. Visit with an engine light: issue was accurately diagnosed (some animal chewed through gas line), fixed as promised, and trunk lever broken was fixed for free as it just needed a quick adjustment. Recommendations were made after a few oil change visits that are totally appropriate for my vehicle at almost 200,000 miles, I appreciate them being appropriately proactive to extend the vehicles life as long as possible. I brought my son's car for some repairs and was so impressed with the professional and friendly service, I am visiting my son in Durham and have repair shops in an other State and know about cars repairs quite a bid. I noticed that my sons car needed few things to be done and brought it to Konrad's Automotive. They did an outstanding job and could have charged me quite a bit more for the work they did in my opinion. I've been having a bit of bad luck with tires and screws lately. Had a complete flat on Sunday, so early Monday morning called AAA to change tire. The naIl was sitting close to a non-repairable spot. I took it Konrad Automotive where I had prior good experience. This was no different, he started right on it and was able to patch it from the inside which is a better repair. Terrible service. Got my brakes and rotors done on my car, had to bring it back 4 times because it squeaked continuously. Each time they told me they fixed the problem but ultimately never did. They told me I had a warranty on the brakes that they put on my car, then turned around and told me they won't honor the warranty. They took my money and never fixed me car properly! I have been very pleased with in the past but this time I went in for a new battery and it was installed but I was over charged because they put in one with a 3 year warranty which I wasn't even asked it that is what I wanted. So I paid the bill and left. The next time I was in my car I saw that none of the features on the right side of the screen was working! No time displayed and music etc. instead the screen was asking me for a pin number.........never saw that before! Now it appears that I will have to take my car to my Honda dealer for help! read more

10 STARS!!! These guys are super!! Extremely kind and professional. I came to Durham for a friend's mother's funeral. I am from the D.C. area and my car broke down on I85 during the recent gas shortage in North Carolina. I had waited more than 3 1/2 hours for AAA tow truck, but they never showed up. I called Konrad's and they had a preferred towing service that they use. The cost for the tow was cheaper than AAA!!! The tow truck dropped my car and Karl greeted me at the door, introduced me to his son and another mechanic. As we were talking I was surprised to see they had already pulled my car into the bay. As I waited for my friend to pick me up, Karl and I talked allot and I played with his black dog (forgot her name). When my friend arrived, as I was leaving Karl said to me..."I'm going to take good care of you." It wasn't even 15 min later when Karl's son called me telling me what was wrong and how much it would be. I have an 11 year old BMW so I know what price to expect. BUT...I didn't expect it to be so low!! Not only that, but they performed a full diagnostic and detailed ALL the items that needed to be addressed when I got back home. They even checked the air in my tires! I wish Konrad was in MY area! I am so impressed with these guys that when I get back to Durham, I'm going to pay them a visit, just to say hello and bring them a bottle of something good. read more

Mendacious, irresponsible and evasive. Good luck getting them to even look at your car in under 8 days or getting it finished in under 3 weeks. Because they are in no hurry, don't feel obligated to exercise themselves on your behalf, and love stringing you along. Lazy, appalling, abrasive and at times abusive....and each time you go you like them less, not more. The workers and owner need a group therapist and perhaps should learn to interpret their own mood rings better. Worst of the worst. read more

The first thing I saw when I pulled into the drive was a terrific black doggie on his back having the best wiggle on the gravel. I spoke to Mr. Konrad about my concerns with the front right tire rim that took quite a bump, and he was honest enough to tell me that it was fine and didn't need any repair. I was moving my daughter to Durham and my vehicle broke down. I called on a Saturday after hours and Karl answered and allowed my vehicle to be towed there. He was terrific! His prices were great. Quality of work on repairing my gear shifter was outstanding! I actually had best gas mileage I have ever had on my 793 mile trip home! Shifting has never been smoother (my vehicle didn't have key so he had to adjust and attach it himself) Thank you so much and I would trust you with any repair on my vehicle! If my daughter has any vehicle problems this is where she will be going! He also came and picked me up when it was fixed because my daughter was working I had to get back to Michigan. They fit me in right away on a late Friday afternoon, had everything done within 15 minutes, and, to my complete surprise, told me not to worry about paying! This is the only car repair place in Durham that I will ever trust with my car. Karl Konrad is not only a good mechanic, but he's also honest and not in the business of ripping people off. Also, from my first visit, Karl and his team treated me like a regular. Really great guys. My trouble started with a leaky radiator, which AAA wanted to charge me nearly $1000 to replace (among other "problems" they said they found with my car). I went to another place to have my radiator replaced, but my car was still making a strange noise after. My car was making a propeller-like noise when I went over 20 mph, and it was really loud on the highway. When I took it back to that place, they said nothing was wrong. I knew something was wrong and that's when I went to Karl. Within a few minutes of looking at it, he knew the trouble was a wheel bearing that needed to be replaced. He kept it over night and even loaned me a car from their lot so I could go to work. He charged me at a reasonable price, and kept me updated. What's funny is that when AAA looked at my car, they didn't even find the wheel bearing problem. They said the sound was from a worn alternator belt, which was actually fine! Turns out they were adding on things to try to rip me off! Glad I went to Karl instead. For someone like me who is new to the area, it means a lot to have a mechanic I can trust who won't rip me off. It's safe to say that Konrad's Auto is the only place I will ever take my car to in Durham. My car drives like new now! read more

Took my Honda Ridgeline to Konrads because of good reviews on Yelp. The cabin blower motor was not working. They charged me to replace the motor and the transistor. Worked for a few days and failed again. Took it back and they replaced the transistor. Worked for a couple of days and failed again. Took it to Honda and they replaced both parts. Works fine. Konrads had not replaced the blower motor but had charged me for the replacement, several hundred dollars worth. They seem like nice people but I wont be back. read more

If you enjoy gross incompetence and have nothing but time to kill, then Konrad Automotive is your place. After two years of maintaining both of my vehicles, I will be looking elsewhere. Uncovering multiple service inconsistencies, returning several times for the same unfinished repair and dealing with Karl's untethered customer service forced me out. This is a mid-century neighborhood garage where one would think there is a proud history of commendable service supporting the local community. However, both Karl and Anthony do not value the client's time, nor do they complete a thorough and lasting job. On two separate oil changes, I was charged for nine quarts and then seven quarts. My vehicle requires eight quarts of oil. After installing a new radiator fan three times on three separate occasions, it was still mounted incorrectly. When corrected (Because I brought it to their attention.), I was told there would be no charge for fixing the fan. Perhaps an apology would have been better? Followed by a, "Bring it right back if you have any problems". Furthermore, be prepared to leave deposits in advance for services. The mechanics at this shop rest firmly and comfortably on their long past laurels. Konrad Automotive preys upon the average car owner and depends on their lack of mechanical engineering knowledge. Karl is an absolutely OUTSTANDING mechanic. After working with him, you won't want to give anyone else your business. After inheriting a car with a lot of problems, he did a ton of repairs and gave me a greatly appreciated deal. Later, when the car needed a whole bunch of other repairs, rather than trying to make a fortune off me - when he totally could have - he instead told me what I didn't want to hear, but absolutely needed to hear, that it was time to trade it in. Another time I had an issue with my car on the morning of an important meeting. I rented a car to get to my meeting and Karl amazingly took care of everything after a quick phone call, including sending a tow truck to retrieve the car from my driveway, bringing it to his shop, and immediately setting to work on the repair. Who else can say that? Another time, while he did the repairs, he was kind enough to loan me his personal car. (I'm sure this isn't standard practice, but the type of person who would do this is the type of person anyone should want to entrust their car to.) Karl is consistently determined to find the simplest fix at the most reasonable price, and, above all, can always be counted on to be honest - something that can feel hard to come by for a young, single woman. When I wanted to consult with my dad about what was happening with my car, Karl patiently explained the situations to him over the phone. On another occasion, I referred a friend to him to have the timing belt done, and he charged her several hundred dollars less than what her mechanic had quoted her. I have been to too many mechanics who charge a fee just to look at your car, and Karl never does that. In fact, when I purchased a new car, he kindly did an inspection free of charge. There are a ton of mechanics closer to my home, but driving to Konrad Automotive is well worth a 20 minute drive. In sum, Karl is fantastic. In fact, he's so good, he doesn't even need to advertise. He is honest, reasonably priced, thorough, accessible, and a generally nice guy. What more could you need from a mechanic? read more
