What stands out here is the great service! I enjoyed the egg rolls, koi koi balls and won tons, all made to order. Not a huge fan of their meat, the chicken is all dark meat. So last night I was in Anaheim and decided to get some KooKoo Grill! The place had plenty of parking when I arrived and there was no customers in the evening. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki Bowl and the food took about 5 minutes to prepare! The bowl had a good portion of beef and rice, the flavors were great without the need of extra teriyaki sauce. I've had KooKoo Grill on my list, and I finally got around to checking it out. It's a small place, but the food packs big flavor. They offer patio seating with string lights, which was perfect for an evening meal. I was hungry and decided to order as much as I thought I could eat. I decided on the Chicken Wrap, KooKoo Balls, and one chicken taco. Everything was delicious! I recommend using the KooKoo sauce. It's like a spicy teriyaki sauce. I was excited to try KooKoo Grill, which is located in an older strip mall in downtown Anaheim near the Packing District. They offer a fusion of Japanese, Mexican, and American cuisine. I visited twice with some friends and we split the following items: kookoo balls, kookoo fries, wraps, burgers, and a teriyaki bowl. The only items on the menu that we didn't try was the California roll, street tacos, egg rolls, and noodles. KooKoo Balls ($5 for 3) - These are deep fried rice balls with chicken, cheese, cilantro, onions and a special spicy sauce. I really loved the creativity of this dish! It was like a Japanese rice ball (onigiri), but fried on the outside so the rice became crispy and held everything in place so well as I ate it. The filling tasted great and had a little kick to it, which I further increased with some kookoo sauce. KooKoo Fries ($10 for half beef/chicken) - This consisted of a tostada bowl stuffed with fries, sour cream, 100 island, cheese, pico de gallo, and hot sauce and some beef and chicken mixed in. Taste wise this was just ok, and a little pricey. Burger ($3) - The burger was smaller than a double double and came with 100 island dressing, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion. It was ok taste wise and nothing really stood out. Wrap ($8.50) - The wrap consisted of a grilled tortilla, tomato, rice, cheese, aioli, guacamole, and hot sauce. It was pretty filling and larger than what I had expected. It felt a lot like a burrito and is supposed to be one of their top selling items here. Teriyaki Bowl (chicken/beef mix - $7.50) - While I didn't try this, the bowl was smaller than expected. My co-worker said the beef was a little over cooked and chewy. Overall the pricing is average for a fast food type joint. I really like the idea of fusing together Japanese, Mexican and American cuisines. Unfortunately most of the items were just average taste wise and price wise. If I did visit again I would stick to the KooKoo Balls. read more

I don't know what happened, but this place really didn't do it for me. I was referred by coworkers who swear by their food. I was going to have a late night, so I wanted something quick to eat. I ordered the KooKoo Balls, because people were telling me how good they were. I threw in some fries too, hoping they'd be fresh and hot. They have you wait outside for your order...or I should say that they have some people wait outside, because they allowed others who had ordered after me and another couple to wait inside. Not sure what that was about, but I went ahead and waited. As long as it took, I assumed that my food would be hot and fresh. Boy was I wrong... The lady brings out my food and I go to my car and open it up to see it and maybe take a bite before I drive off. The KooKoo Balls were hot and looked good, but they were absolutely not good! I was looking in my bag for a knife and fork...there wasn't one. So I went ahead and bit into it, expecting to say mmmmm, but I actually went hmmmm... The outside of the ball was very hard. I was actually really surprised at that. I had to bite and rip to open it up. That should tell you how tough they were. The outside was ridiculously crunchy and not in a good way. Like the kind of crunchy that makes you wonder if they refried them again after they sat all day. I vote that they were refried. That outside part had absolutely no flavor! I was really surprised at that. No taste whatsoever...you're just chewing on fried flour with sesame seeds. Yuck! Once I did open up the middle, I thought, okay...this is my lifesaver! Nope! The inside mixture was also flavorless! I couldn't believe it and thought for a minute that maybe I was tripping or maybe I had Covid, since one of the symptoms is a loss of taste and smell, but funny thing is, when I poured some of the teriyaki sauce on the mixture, it was 200% better! Guess I don't have Covid! It's a shame that those Kookoo Balls desperately needed the sauce. Sauces should enhance the flavor that's already there, but it's a shame when you waste money and stomach space on something that completely disappoints you. I ended up pouring the teriyaki sauce down the middle and biting it out with my teeth, since there was no fork to use. I left the entire outside of the second Kookoo Ball and ate a little of the mixture, again before I just tossed all of it. Thankfully the fries were good, but that was it. I would give them a shot again, but definitely not the Kookoo Balls. My coworkers were all excited about me trying them and wanted to know how they were, so when I filled them in, they were very surprised that they were hard. They told me they are usually soft and flavorful. That further let me know that they were old. Such a disappointment! read more

The restaurant is fast, casual, and family-owned. The owner is very kind and friendly as well. As a first timer, I tried had to try the koo koo balls and a teriyaki plate. The koo koo balls (3pcs for $4.95) were great! They are deep fried rice balls with savory chicken, onions, cilantro, and cheese. The outside texture is similar to rice at the bottom of a clay pot, which has hardened. The inside is warm, savory, and has a slight spicy kick. Top this off with their koo koo sauce for added flavor. The chicken & beef teriyaki plate ($9.95) was also really good! Both meats were really good and very plentiful. It comes on top of a large bed of rice with a small side salad and Thousand Island dressing. The bowl version is just meat and rice and smaller in size. If you are looking for great teriyaki fusion food in the Anaheim area, I would recommend coming to KooKoo Grill. It's good food, good service, and good value! When I come down to Orange County I'm always on a search for a good teriyaki bowl and this place had rave reviews from a few of my Yelp friends so I decided to give it a try. If I'm visiting a new restaurant in a place I'm visiting I usually like to ask for recommendations and things like that. He didn't ask if I had any questions, he just looked like he didn't care if I ordered or not. Made me felt really uncomfortable, I didn't want to ask questions and I almost left. (Note: If you're going to work at a restaurant you should be personable and greet customers) This was my first meal of the day before driving 6 hours home, I regret not leaving and going somewhere else. So SO SO GOOD! I came here for the first time and ordered the chicken noodles. It's a stir fry udon noodle with teriyaki chicken, cabbage, broccoli and carrots. It was absolutely delicious! It's on the spicy side(coming from a Mexican who LOVES spicy) so be careful! Not sure if you there's an option for no spicy but if there is I'll definitely be getting that next time. Damn how I miss the shit out of this place! Back when I used to live by the previous location that Peter (owner) ran, I was there at least twice a week, Koo Koo Teriyaki used to be a staple for me. Now that I live in San Diego, I'll drive out to their new Anaheim location on occasion just to eat here, there's nothing even close out here that can compare. I've even made my parents fans of this place lol. I've pretty much tried everything on the menu and even a couple things off menu such as the teriyaki beef sliders and these wonton tostada things. Only thing I haven't tried is the stuff made with tofu. I can pretty much vouch for anything here and tell you that it's great. I wish Peter would open a Koo Koo Grill down here but I know he won't so I'll have to settle with driving an hour and change once in a while lol. If you're a first timer I would recommend 1. Kookoo is a strange fusion that both scream comfort food and the quick-to-go rice and beef combos that you love. It takes an extra cool easy to eat style when you eat it as a Wrap (octagonal shape quesidilla) but I think the Deluxe Burritto (CaliMex Asian Fusion) is the best! I get mine as a chicken/beef mix deluxe and it seems like an overwhelming amount of ingredients but it works pretty awesomely and doesn't leave you bloated like Mexican food might. It even has avocado and onion ring inside to add a nice crunch. The owners are fantastic and very kind. The cookies they have occassionally are freaking delicious! The chicken wrap was packed with teriyaki style chicken, guacamole, rice and two different kinds of sauce. While the wrap packed flavor the tortillas they use were firmly grilled and made it have some crunch, which was quite delicious. Only complaint I have is the amount of sauce. If I ordered it again I'd definitely order light or less sauce. By the ending of the last few bites the tortilla was soggy due to that much sauce, but overall the wrap was phenomenal and I'd definitely order that again! Service was pretty good!
