So excited to find muah chee ( mochi covered with peanuts ) in US! When we planned our trip to NY, we have bookmarked this place to try . The kopitiam is down the street from where our hotel is so it is convenient and also from a train station. Interior is chic and malay vibe. For the food wise, everything is just ok. I don't remember how the Nasi lemak taste like but something is missing from the taste. Sorry it's kinda bland. The texture of the muah chee is not as firm as I thought it should be , although its freshly made and warm. Milo Dinosaurus is the most ripped off drink and pricing ever . They charged additional $0.50 for ice but it said ICED MILO on the menu which means the price listed should have included ice. The drink it's too watery and oh well can't compare to what we got back in Asia. Maybe we should try the kaya toast and egg but food in NY is too expensive, not worth it. read more

I've spent a significant amount of time eating my way through the Singapore region where you can get some awesome Malaysian food. Some things on the menu are delicious and remind of of that foodie paradise whereas other items are a miss. Nasi Lemak was lacking, missed the ample chili that normally comes with it from food vendors. The rice was the best part. Tea with milk was delicious - perfect balance of sweetness that reminds me of coffee shops. Kaya Tost - the amount of kaya to bread ratio was a little overwhelming but the flavor super tasty with a. good smear of butter Chili noodles had a great savory umami funk to them - deliciously simple. Pandan chicken - chewy and passable. Skip. For someone who is just exploring Malaysian food this is a cool spot. For someone looking for more authentic options move on. I came here on a weekend where I called ahead to see if they had Beef Rendang (one of my favorite Malaysian dishes) and they had it. Well I am sorry to say that it was the worst Beef Rendang ($13.50) I've ever had! It had the heat of chili, the sauce was watery like soup and there was absolutely NO depth of flavors; the only good thing I can say about it was that the beef was tender. I have had Beef Rendang in Singapore at several establishments, each different in their flavor profiles but always the depth of flavors were superb. I've also had this dish at other NYC Chinatown Malaysian restaurants and it has been decent (not as good as Singapore). The other special was 5 spiced pork ($7) - there were maybe about 10-12 small cubes of pork that were seared or fried until the meat was so dry. I definitely don't recommend this dish. I had a bowl of Kueh Chap ($12), pork belly, tofu, hard-boiled egg, fish cake and flat rice noodles in a soy sauce broth with the heat of chilis. I would not recommend this dish because it was lacking in any depth of flavors. I don't call throwing the heat of chilis into food to be considered "flavor". The Belachan Chicken Wings ($8) was 3 fried chicken wings supposedly caramelized with shrimp paste. This appetizer/snack was decent but I could hardly discern any shrimp paste flavors; the wings were perfectly fried till crispy yet still moist and it came with a teensy, tiny thimble of sweet chili sauce for dipping. The entire meal came to $44 with tax and frankly speaking, it was very over-priced for lack-luster Malaysian food. I truly don't understand the hype and the crowds. read more

My boyfriend and I come here just about every week. It's a casual but trendy spot, great for a quick dinner. My boyfriend is from Malaysia and says this stuff is authentic! So I think we've tried just about everything on the menu but top hits would be: - white coffee - it's sweet but also caffeinated. Just get it, it's amazing! - nasi lemak - great flavor - fish ball soup - it's a classic - chicken pandan - the blue rice wrapped with banana leaf - oyster omelette It is a self service type of spot, in the sense that you should bus yourself. I was really looking forward to Kopitiam. I'm not sure if we came at an off time, but very few of the desserts we ordered met our expectations. we had: 1) Pulut Inti -- $3.5 morning glory stick rice, grated coconut sugar. They pre-make these and keep them on display. Ours was quite stale and hardened. 2) Penang style hand rolled muah chee --$6 - ground peanuts, sesame seeds, served warm! I did enjoy this, super nutty and fragrant. Mochi is a bit softer than i'm used to. 3) Milky Rose Lychee Mochi -- $6 - chilled lychee infused milk mochi with rose petals. very light lychee flavor with coconut, rose petals are purely decorative. 4) Kaya toast - bread was over-toasted plain white bread with a thin layer of kaya jam between them. definitely could've used a more substantial bread or lessen the toasting. I ate here yesterday morning. The person working was a super sweet Jamaican guy. I ordered the Kaya Toast, Nasi Lemak & was super excited to drink Milo in the morning for the first time in years. The toast was delicious; crisp, buttery & coconut-y, as other people have stated. The Milo could have been sweeter but was great nonetheless. Eating the toast and drinking Milo reminded me of Sunday morning breakfasts with my parents when I was a kid (my family is from Guyana, which was colonized by the British). The Nasi Lemak... it was okay. The coconut rice was super amazing! You can actually see the coagulated coconut milk in it, unlike other Malaysian restaurants I've frequented. The sambal was delicious as well! I definitely tasted tamarind, galangal, and spices. It reminded me of achar, a similarly spicy sauce from Guyana. The anchovy stew was just okay. I'm not sure if they're putting MSG in the anchovies or if it comes in it pre-packaged before preparation, but my lips started to get itchy. It was also quite salty, which isn't a great way to start the day. It was okay and disappointing simultaneously, a reminder that not all cheap food is good for you. The person was working there by himself until whom I assume was the manager/owner came in, and started ordering him around & had an overall standoff-ish/borderline antagonistic aura. I've been living in New York since 1994. There have so many Malaysian restaurants open and close in the past, some are ok, some are good but no place which you feel they will take you back to south east Asia. When you walked in Kopitiam, you will sense it by the smell. All the food are extremely delicious and authentic. Fish ball egg noodle soup, stick rice dessert. You can't just pretend you can make it. i think this place is decent for someone's first time having malaysian/indonesian food. the items i had tasted good- but i think it was slightly overpriced and some dishes could have been executed better. the iced coffee was good- but i think theyve got their milk ratios a little off the nasi lemak was ok... rice was a bit dry along with the anchovies. there was no sauce so everything was just dry. i loved the sticky rice with sweet coconut filling dessert. so good i wanted to get a second but they actually sold out. overall- i think this place is worth the try and i would come back if i was in the area and craving, or wanting a cute place to catch up with a friend! definitely give this place a try for the instagrammable-ness and atmosphere if you are in the neighborhood. the staff is also very friendly :) read more

This place is AMAZING! Wonderful, hole-in-the-wall restaurant with delicious drinks, desserts, and dishes! Had the nasi lemak (which was only $6!!!) and the special of the day, sting ray in banana leaves! The nasi lemak was light and flavorful and the sting ray meat was tender and paired delicately with okra and string beans. For dessert, we got the layered pastry and the pandan cake. The pastry had a cinnamon and caramel flavoring, although the texture was more hard and dry whereas the pandan was so perfectly chewy and delicious without being too sweet! I came here because the menu looked interesting and I was unfamiliar with the items on it, so I wanted to try it out. We got the kway chap, kaya butter toast, and a curry puff to eat. The curry puff had a decent amount of spice and was very thick inside, it was delicious. We also got the kaya butter toast to try, which was made with such soft milk bread and a flavorful butter. The mixture of pandan and coconut flavor inside was so tasty and super light on the stomach. For my entree, I got the kuay chap which was wide noodles with eggs, tofu, pork belly and a dark soy sauce soup. First off, I have never tried anything like this, but it is so delicious and I would definitely have it again. The noodles were so soft and they have a generous amount of toppings. Came here after reading the Eater blog for being one the top rated breakfast spots in NY but was not impressed. We arrived around 11am on Monday and there was no wait. It's a self serve restaurant so you take a number and they bring you the food. The food itself was pretty good, we ordered the Nasi Lemak, Kaya toast and duck tongue. First time eating Nasi lemak, it's interesting and different, pretty much fried/dried little fish (anchovies?) with nuts over rice with a side of cucumber and hot sauce. I have no idea what this is supposed to taste like since I've never had Nasi lemak but I don't think I would order this again. The Kaya toast was jgood, I was expecting more butter, it had a decent amount of the pandan coconut jam. Lastly the duck tongue was pretty flavorful, with the right amount of crisp. I've only ever had the duck tongue at dim sum spots but I don't remember so many bones. Honestly I don't know what all the rave is about. I would discard the lack of atmosphere for good food but it also fell short here. The best thing we ordered was the Nasi Lemak. The wings were average. We also had some noodle soup that was bland. I went to Kopitiam after watching a viral video on social media about how two women created one of the best cafes in America. I tried the Kaya Toast, Nasi Lemak, and the Kway Chap Pork Belly Noodles. The Kaya Toast was was very good. It was a simple white toast with butter and this coconut flavored jam. The Nasi Lemak was basically the dehydrated anchovies you see sold on the street tossed in some spices and peanuts. The coconut rice was just plain white rice. Add some sliced cucumber and a hard boiled egg and you have a very boring $8 appetizer. The Kway Chap Pork Belly Noodles was so bad we threw it out. It was over cooked noodles with chunks of pork fat in a bowl. The broth was straight star anise and chili oil. Cilantro and a soy sauce egg were placed on top to cover the disaster. Came on a Sunday around 11 AM. This is a fast casual place, and we ordered first before finding a table to sit at. Luckily, there was a short line to order and we were able to snag the last 2-person table (it got much busier afterwards). The dishes came as it became ready, so don't expect them all to come at once. All the servers bringing the dishes were very friendly. We ordered a white coffee, nasi lemak, fish ball soup, water spinach with sembal, and Kaya butter toast. The fish ball soup was comforting, and the water spinach had great flavor. The white coffee was tasty as any coffee with evaporated milk would. I enjoyed both the Kaya butter toast and nasi lemak (loved the coconut rice), but wonder if the toast could have been more toasted and the nasi lemak hotter (the fried peanut and anchovies mixture was kind of cold). At the end of our meal, we bused our dishes; the table has a reminder so you won't forget. Wish we had a place like this in SF and I would go back a lot! read more

Really cute Malaysian cafe with some very solid food options in a very casual setting. I had the tok tok mee, they do the dry noodle version of this dish and it definitely hit the spot. Kaya toast is also really good here, honestly a pretty simple dish but toast with coconut-pandan jam is always great. Beef rendang was pretty bad though, feels like a home-cooked braised dish in the bad way. Turns out slow braising beef does make it tender up to a certain extent, if you over-do it then the beef will end up dry and stringy which is what happened here. The curry itself tasted pretty good but if that dish was all that I ordered, I would have probably given the place 2 stars. As it stands though, I feel the place does a great job at bringing Malaysian cafe culture and street food to NYC just stay far away from the beef rendang. Only other annoyance is that the place is extremely popular and they don't do reservations so expect to wait a while. read more

Oh, huh it's not the most common thing that yelp lets me down. So here's the rundown of the experience. Enter I go and I order the Nasi Lemak. That's it. Now I would say that often times that when you order only one thing from a restaurant with a large menu and it falls short of expectations you should not be so quick to judge. Not so much here because the menu is so small. So how was it? Well, it includes the things that you will see in the myriad of pictures provided by the dedicated yelpers who have visited the establishment. It's the dish with small fish and cucumbers lining it. Now truth be told I never tried the dish so I can't be the best judge of this but yelp ultimately comes down to your opinion right? Was it bad? Certainly no, but I just couldn't understand what the buzz about this place was. The flavors present were bold, although because I lack knowledge in the food I can't tell whether or not it's good. What I CAN tell was good is the Sambal included with it (the small container of red stuff.) Unfortunately, it was just a tad bit too spicy for my tastes. Overall I think it's an alright place but it just doesn't quite align with my tastes I guess. I see that most people compliment the dish so I'm sure I'm in the minority here. Won't come again by myself but if someone is ever in the area looking for this type of food I'd recommend they go. On a finishing note, there's not much to say about service, it was quick and I had no wait time. I guess I went during down hours. If you want something simple and taste good, try them all. My friend got very sick immediately after eating hainanese chicken yesterday. We let the staff know about what happened but they didn't offer any kind of support, care, apology or even refund for the dish that made my friend very ill. And they asked where his dish was and took it to the kitchen. And we didn't hear anything from them after.
