Wow wow wow. I wasn't expecting much considering this place was pretty far out from NYC, and I have to say, I am completely blown away. Someone brought me here for lunch and I ordered a chirashi don. The quality of the fish was just unbelievable. I thought I was eating somewhere at a world renowned Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles. The sushi rice is perfectly seasoned and service was great too. They also had nigiri sushi with a California roll, and sashimi. These lunch items costed $15 each. You are also given a bowl of salad and unlimited authentic matcha green tea. Unbelievably good, everything is incredibly fresh and you really can't go wrong with anything on their huge menu. Highly recommend sautéed oysters as an appetizer, I can't stand shellfish but I can't get enough of these. I often rotate what entree I get but it's all excellent. I've dined in a few times here and the food was good but the seating arrangements are awful so I decided to try take-out for me and my fiance. BIG MISTAKE. The first time I tried calling in was a little before 7, which I understand is a busier time but it's not impossible to answer a call. When you call for takeout, you're immediately greeted with a recording saying that "if you experience long hold times to try again at a later time." The call then drops after about 80 seconds if no one answers. Someone at the front picked up once then immediately put me on hold, at which point I waited for another 10 minutes before I gave up. After 15 minutes of this, I hopped in my car and drove from work to Kotobuki, all the while trying to get someone on the phone during the drive, obviously with no luck. After I got into the restaurant, I had to wait another 8 minutes (yes, at this point I was counting every single one) until I was helped. I placed my order and was told it would take 30 minutes. I hung out in my car and came back in 30 minutes later, only to wait another 15 minutes to get my food. I live about 10 minutes away, so I finally got to unpack my meal and eat over an hour and 20 minutes after I placed my original call. All of the hot food was lukewarm at best. The crab salad didn't have any tobiko, the avocado in the sushi roll was hard, and the tempura on the vegetables/shrimp was mushy. It was one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. If I wanted to sit on hold for 30 minutes and get average food I would've called my cable company while heating up leftovers. Definitely will not be going back. read more

I have been a customer for 20 years, today (like most lately) a 3 hour wait. This is just entirely unacceptable. We ordered at 5:15 when they opened and the food arrived at 8:16PM. This food is not worth it and the small amount that I ordered was $100 plus the delivery and fees. Outrageous that they think this is ok. I will NEVER be going back to my once favorite sushi place! This restaurant discriminates against people with babies! My mother and I came for lunch with my 8 month old and were told there were no high chairs. When we inquired, the waitress told us they must not want babies here. My dad gets there and they are completely closed. We try to contact them more than once by phone to make sure the order went through and double check the table actually open. They never answer their phone. We called a decent number of times and they never answer the phone. The good news is we never got charged for our Order. But why run a business when you're gonna tell people online you're open special hours on Christmas and not be open. And why run a business when you never answer the phone. I would have to give this place an F. I never heard of a business never answering the phone especially a restaurant. It just does not make any sense to me at all. Sooo, I can't do more than 3 stars....here's why The place has legendary sushi, amazing quality. Even the rice seems to top other sushi rice (is that possible?). But there are a couple of tiny issues that Kotobuki has never tried to fix or update. And the newer sushi spots around town are leaving Kotobuki in the dust! First of all, the seating arrangements in the restaurant is super tight. Each table is so close to the next, it makes privacy impossible. Next, can someone tell me why there is still no liquor license? I mean, you can still order a standard Sake Bomb. But newer spots have great creative drinks, like lychee martinis or a Godzilla! cocktail. Nope, only beer wine and soda here. Finally, although the sushi and sashimi is perfect, all of the cooked apps were very under seasoned. A little salt was missing on every hot dish. Shame. Let me start by saying I've been here a few times. The first time I came here was roughly 3 years ago, the food was really good and the service was great. I was here about a month ago and again the food was good, not as good as the first time but still good. I came back tonight and our waitress SUCKED. She was incredibly dismissive. She grabbed our menues after we had ordered our appetizers and started to walk away, we had to ask for them back so we could order dinner. She also dropped our plates, and cups on the table, not gently place them, DROP THEM and walk away. My boyfriend wound up dropping his chopsticks on the floor and when he asked for new ones she huffed, brought wooden ones and again dropped them in the table. She didn't come back to our table at all to see if we needed anything during the meal and she didn't seem to care about any of the customers in the restaurant. Now onto our food, it looked sloppy on the plate and it was strait up bad. The sushi tasted sour and had very little flavor. Not even 10 minutes after we left both of our stomachs started to hurt and we both wound up with FOOD POISONING!!!! WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING. read more

By far, my favorite sushi in the area!! Marvin and I were really craving sushi the other day so we decided to try it out again. We ordered the appetizer KMAC sliders which were fantastic. The "bun" was extremely crispy but light at the same time. The sliders consisted of chopped tuna, avocado, rice and tempura flakes which were an amazing combination. I honestly have to say, this appetizer was the favorite part of this meal! For the main course, Marvin got beef teriyaki and I got two rolls, "Out of control" which was tuna and avocado rolled with topiko as well as the "Remixed Caterpillar" roll which was a delicious combination of eel, avocado, tuna, tempura flakes and a different type of sweet eel sauce. Both of these main courses were not only beautifully presented but they also tasted just as good at they looked. My only complaint is that the restaurant is on the smaller side so the wait may be a little bit long and when you are seated it might be a bit cramped, definitely a more intimate environment rather than coming here with a group. I highly recommend Kotobuki if you are craving high quality sushi or just a really great meal in general. read more

I have ordered from Kotobuki for years, it was our favorite sushi. I picked up take-out on Saturday, and when I opened the container in the parking lot with my hiyashe wakame salad, I found two flies crawling around in the salad. When I returned to the restaurant, the hostess was apologetic, but one of the chefs from the back came out and was unnecessarily angry, saying "Impossible! We have NO flies here!" and stated that if I found flies they must have gotten in after I opened the Tupperware (??). I found myself trying to calm HER down, telling her it's ok, I'm not asking for any money back, I just want them to know there might be flies in some of the food. She continued telling me I was wrong until I just left. I am so disappointed in their response to what should have been a very straightforward interaction, and it unfortunately makes me very hesitant to return to what was previously my favorite sushi restaurant. read more
