This place is awesome! The food was delicious and it had a great atmosphere. It is a food truck attached to a small dining area and kitchen. There is a small amount of indoor seating with a very homey vibe. The outdoor area was well lit with benches and games even in the winter! We ordered the salmon sushi and the chicken yaki soba and they were both delicious! The salmon tasted very fresh and it melted in your mouth. Great portion sizes too. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for someone looking for a nice meal after a day up on the mountain. read more

Went here last night and really had a great experience. We're local people and a friend who also is local raved about Koya Kitchen. It's exciting for us to have another nice restaurant (food cart) that serves good food in our small community. Shared a table with some people from Portland and enjoyed chatting with them. What an unexpected find right on Highway 26 in the middle of the Mt. Hood forest! The decor is cozy, quirky, creative and interesting, and the beer and sake garden outside is lovely, with hammocks, Japanese lanterns, picnic tables and lots of plants. This is a food cart with both indoor and outdoor seating. We didn't try anything from their extensive beer, sake, cider and liquor menu, as we were driving, but it feels like a cozy place to chill and have a drink. We ordered the daily special, Ahi tuna poke bowl, a fried rice, and the potstickers. Everything was interesting and good, though I would have loved a bit of poke sauce on the bowl and the pickled ginger was the dyed-pink kind - always the sign of an inferior product. But there were creative touches, and we very much enjoyed the overall experience. The service was also friendly and relatively prompt. All in all, a fun find! We would stop by again, if driving by at a mealtime! read more

What an amazingly decorated, cute, cozy and charming place. So nice to have something like this on the mountain. My husband and I ventured in here for lunch and we're so happily surprised. The owner is attentive and sweet. The food was great and if it's not spicy enough for you there's plenty of hot sauces to pick from. Everything is on to go plates etc. because of the food truck but the ambiance is so nice. I can't eat a lot of the typical bar food that is offered at most the old locations up here so it's really nice to have other options such as sushi available. I would love to come back for happy hour for their discount on Saki. read more

I have been staying Welches for weeks, on a business trip, and today was the first day I tried Koya. On a very beautiful rainy mid-June afternoon. Why not. It was great -- went to the truck, ordered Yaki Meshi with Kimchi to-go from the friendly staff, went inside and enjoyed a well made (free) hot green tea. The indoor sitting area was cozy enough that I decided my meal would no longer be to-go. I got my meal and the over easy egg on top was perfectly cooked -- oozed all over my rice for mixing in. The food was such that I have left overs for breakfast. I think the kimchi is key for the Yaki Meshi-- the acid and spice really brought the whole dish together. So it was definitely worth adding the kimchi! Of course the whole meal was delicious (and not at all over salted as can be the case with Asian food sometimes) and filling. I did not order drinks this trip but looks like they've got a great selection of a range of alcohol. I'm probably going to be back here a lot. Glad I finally decided to check Koya out. read more

As a local in Welches, it's nice to have options, but we would not recommend Koya Kitchen. Have eaten twice at this restaurant and have been disappointed both times. It's a cute little place with a nice staff but as people who really enjoy Thai, Vietnamese, and Asian food, this is really not worth the money. Tonight our Ramen had virtually no meat in it and we had a daily special that was burnt. We will not be fooled again. read more

I almost don't want to give this place 5 stars for fear that it will become over run with hipsters but alas I have to. Simply put, Koya Kitchen is an oasis of good food in an otherwise desert of blandness. We love Koya Kitchen! It's such a little "sleeper" spot along Highway 26 on your way to Mt. Hood. Don't be put off by the building; inside you'll be welcomed by cozy surroundings and a congenial staff who are knowledgeable about their entrees. I'm so sad! This was such a great restaurant and now all that has changed. The menu has changed and it's very limited and the portions are super small now. We used to stop there all the time on our way over the mountain and my husband and I would share a couple of items and it was awesome. Recently we stopped and you have to stand outside in the cold to order (more like a food cart than a restaurant) -- there is no more table service, and the portions are small for the price. And we paid $2 for half a piece of naan bread and $5 for a tiny serving of edamame. Unfortunately the noodle dish we ordered ($12) wasn't even that good and the quality of the chicken was lacking. It's such a disappointment because it was a great place and an alternative to the usual burger/pizza mountain food choices. Sadly we have made our last visit to Koya Kitchen. The owner is super nice, but the changes are not for the better. I wish you luck!! read more

We will definitely be back! And for the area this is really a 5 star!! My husband and I had a nice long hike into the woods and I really wanted some sushi... I did not end up getting sushi but will definitely be back for some. I had a rice dish that was very filling and ended up being 2 more meals the following day. My husband had the Ramen, which he thought was a little bland, but I really liked the broth plus it allowed him to play with the spices/sauces that are neatly placed by the tea. The owner/server/chef was very nice and quick! Also the happy hour was awesome! I had a cold sake and a large beer. read more

So good. Found this hidden gem about a month ago, and as good as the food is (hint: super good) the very eclectic people both working and eating there made it really fun. Played a little bocce ball (jungle type) on the awesome area outside, and tried more amazing varieties of sake than I ever had before. The second time I was in I had a noodle dish that I thought was a little too salty, but was ok. Since then I've learned to ask for mine to be a little light on the soy, and they have been happy to oblige so I'm not docking them for that, especially since the fish is so fresh and the people who work there so interesting.
