Ironically, we came here and didn't get sushi. I love sushi so that's why this is surprising. We ended up having the duck and rack of lamb. They were both cooked and seasoned perfectly! And our vegetable sides were so good! (Spinach and squash) They are also two of the priciest items on the menu though so there's that. I'm not a fan of sushi with jalapeños or cream cheese because I feel like those two flavors overpower the seafood and sauce. It was almost impossible to find sushi here without cream cheese and/or jalapeños so no sushi for me. We didn't sit at the grill so I can't comment on that. The tables for two are super crammed together. Not intimate at all. I could of reached over and sampled the couples food next to me. Also, the servers came over to us numerous times trying to give us food that wasn't ours. I guess they have sections but no table numbers so they had no idea who ordered what. Koze is one of them, a meal at their teppan grill is a win win for anyone that appreciates quality ingredients, freshness, taste and especially Japanese/American cuisine. Here are some items in their menu that just make this world a better place: Filet Mignon, Salmon, Playboy Roll, Spare Ribs... And even thou it's very simple, their fried rice (seconds after it's been cooked in front of you) will make you want to never eat rice anywhere else... Service was great, our teppan cook was very funny and entertaining and waitress was sweet and attentive. My only complaint is we were there for a longgggg time. It took awhile just to get our orders in and overall we waited for pretty much everything. The host said that we had to all be seated by a certain time to put in our orders for teppan and nobody came til way past that time. Still four stars though because the food was bomb. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in El Paso. Please note that this review only pertains to the sushi, and not to the hibachi experience. My husband, his cousin and I went in the other night for a light dinner, and we split five rolls and some sake. We ordered the green chile roll, the dynamite roll, the tempura BBQ eel roll, a Philly roll, and a California roll. The green chile roll was delicious, and I love that they brought some southwestern flair to their Far East cuisine. However, the tempura-fried green chile was left in one whole strip spread across the top of the roll, so cutting off bits without destroying the underlying sushi was a little difficult. The dynamite roll was not at all what I expected ... it was more like a sushi casserole. The flavor was nothing special, and pulling out pieces to eat was a bit awkward. The BBQ eel was amazing ... I'm not usually a huge fan of cooked sushi (I really love the raw stuff), but this one packed such a flavor punch that I would order it again in a heartbeat. The Philly roll might have been my favorite, but I should probably add that Philly rolls are my bread and butter. Salmon with a little cream cheese to balance out the texture, and they're never too expensive. I order Philly rolls just about every time we go out for sushi, no matter the restaurant. The California roll was a standard California roll ... nothing to write home about, but good filler. The service was great. Our server was friendly, and I was very surprised at how quickly they brought out our five rolls on a packed Friday night. We were expecting to wait for much longer than we did. The prices are pretty decent too ... our bill (before tip) for the five rolls and one large hot sake was about $55; not bad at all for three people. read more

My hubby decided to take me here for date night. He called earlier in the day and made reservations for 7pm. We arrive promptly and were told there wasn't a reservation in our name. We almost left. But he found the phone call in his phone log and showed it to the receptionist to prove that he had called and spoke to someone. So after about a half hour we were seated. The table was already full and they had basically put 2 plates on the corner so we could fit it. Our server came to take our drink orders and any rolls or appetizers anyone wanted. It seemed that the server for the table across from us was much more efficient at doing his job than ours was. The table across from us had their drink orders taken after ours and still received their drinks and appetizers before we even received our drinks. We sat and watched as the people across from us were served soup and salad and drink refills while we still waited for a first round of drinks. I realize that I could go on and on about the service we received but I will try to focus on the main points. The soup was too salty, the lettuce on the salads looked like it had been prepared the day prior. The ginger sauce on the salad was the worst Ive ever had, I took one bite and didn't even give it another chance. The fried rice was bland and my husbands chicken had a funny taste to it. On a positive note, the cook we had was funny and did a good job during the little amusement part where he lights the fire and whatnot. The people we sat with were celebrating birthdays and were good company. The one guy says the service is normally a lot better than what we received as they were frequent customers. I wasn't impressed at all. The manager never even attempted to apologize for the reservation mistake. We will not be back to give it another chance. We were hoping the food would make up for the bad experience, but it definitely did not. read more

My disappointment stems from the fact that we came in for the teppanyaki grill stations and were talked to very shortly by who I assume is a manager stating that we couldn't be seated at the stations for 7 hours because they were experiencing "chef issues." Oh my GOD!!! I had a craving for sushi, so I read all the Yelp reviews for my area. I finally decided on Koze.... I have found a favorite restaurant!!! They have teppan grills which my husband ADORES, as well as phenomenal sushi. I have actually never had sushi of such exquisite quality or creativity. Last night we went and sat at one of the teppan grills. The company at the table was lovely, which is always nice. The couple next to us were regulars and recommended the Firecracker roll to us. We loved it!!! He ordered filet mignon and lobster, and I ordered the new york strip and shrimp. For the price, that was the biggest filet I've ever seen. I was amazed at the portions and quality. I liked how my strip was cut, so it was cooked perfectly even. All of this came with soup, salad, amazing fried rice, and veggies. The meal was quite expensive, but worth every penny. Now TODAY.... I wake up and that sushi was all I could think about. I obsessed over it. I read the entire menu while my husband was at work. I begged to go back, just to sit at the sushi bar. We ordered the Firecracker roll, the Koze Special, California rolls, and the Philly rolls. With warm sake, of course. It. Was. Extraordinary. This was a couple hours ago, and though I'm full all I want is more. The agreement is that if I clean the kitchen I can have it again tomorrow :) I'm obsessed. My friends and I went out for a going away dinner for a friend. We were treated so well by all of the wait staff. Our waitress kept our glasses full of water and the chef was extremely personable. The only minor issue I had with our visit was that one of my friends ordered a sushi appetizer and didn't receive it until the chef came out to start cooking the meal so he had very little time to enjoy his appetizer before eating his full meal. To some, the thought of ordering seafood in a land locked city like El Paso may sound asinine. However, when your insatiable craving for sushi borders on maniacal, you begin to make concessions. Thus I began my quest around El Paso for a halfway decent imitation of the fresh sushi rolls (I didn't even entertain the thought of finding reasonable sashimi) that I've grown accustom to growing up on the seafood rich East Coast. Just when my search seemed futile and scarce giblets of gray, tendon laced backfin tuna seemed as good as it was going to get, I met a respectable offering of the rolls I pined for at Koze Teppan Grill on North Mesa. While the rolls at Koze may not have the heft and value of those back in New York City and are filled with previously frozen fish (expecting fresh fish in El Paso would just be greedy?), they satisfied my sushi craving and keep me regularly coming back for more. My favorites include a simple tuna and avocado roll and the Koze Special Roll, filled with tuna, salmon, crab, avocado, asparagus (I typically ask to hold the asparagus) and cream cheese, deep-fried and served with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Perhaps the best part of naming Koze my go to for sushi in the Sun City was the discovery of how much else they had to offer. In an impressive utilization of space, Koze transforms a relatively small strip mall storefront into an enjoyable getaway for a nice meal, whether for traditional hibachi at one of their efficiently placed grills or to sample their full menu. Koze's cuisine fuses Asian influences with steakhouse offerings, putting out some of the best steak I have enjoyed in El Paso to date. To start the meal, I am a big fan of their traditional Korean style Kalbi (marinated barbecue beef short rib) and their Ahi appetizer, a surprisingly pleasant combination of raw tuna, goat cheese and shaved apple slices. Besides a few satisfying sushi rolls, for your main course you cannot go wrong with the boldly flavored grilled lemon and butter shrimp or one of their well prepared steaks. Or of course, if you have the time, indulge in the hibachi grill, complete with chef showmanship and the protein of your choice cooked while you watch - go for the filet mignon or shrimp and you'll be pleased you did. While my friends and I still debate the proper pronunciation of "Koze," we surely can agree that it is one of our favorite places to dine in El Paso. A group of us went looking for Sushi and ended up at Koze. Given the size of our group, we sat at the Teppan Yaki grill. The cook , from Korea was extremely talented and entertaining, in fact one of the best I've seen. I ordered Hamachi, Sake, a Rainbow Roll and Edamame. The sushi was decent, but nothing special. The roll was far too large and of so-so quality. The women's bathroom was not clean and hot water handle was broken off. The folks who ordered Teppan Yaki enjoyed their meals and seemed pretty happy with everything. I would go back; but consider this to be an average restaurant. read more

This place was awesome! My friend and I went for dinner on a Saturday night around 8 pm. They asked if we had a reservation, we did not however they had two seats at a grill open so we got seated within 5 minutes of arriving. The grill was a very fun experience, they begin by asking if you have any allergies they should be aware of in the preparation of your food and continuously ask your preference in how it is prepared. They are also very considerate of specific preferences, a girl who was also seated at the grill with us was vegetarian and he asked her if she preferred hers be cooked before he put any other meat on the grill. I ordered a sushi roll as well as some fried rice and it was delicious! It was both of our first times there and we couldn't get over how great the food was. I had a great time and I loved the food. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! Waitress took our starter order, never returned with our Miso Soup or Salad. A totally different server delivered our tempura appetizer and returned short after with our soup/salad. We told him we were ready to order but our waitress didn't return until we were COMPLETELY finished with our appetizers. Our waitress took out order and yet again it was brought out by a different server and the order was incorrect. Our order was corrected and served to us by a completely different server. Our waters were not filled and our dipping sauces were not brought without having to ask several times. On top of it all, the waitress charged us for the wrong order, on top of our original order. I've eaten at the restaurant once. It was far too long ago to write an accurate review. I do remember the service was good and everyone was incredibly satisfied with their dishes. We ordered sushi and some hot dishes as well. Now, I eat their sushi on a weekly basis. I usually order from Sintini (the bar next door) and eat my sushi there as well. Their to go service isn't exactly quick, the sushi they put out is well worth the wait. Plus, you don't notice the time gone by when you're drinking delish martinis. I usually order the Nigiri Maguro, Koze Special, Rainbow Roll, and others. Their fish is so fresh. Their nigiri literally melts in your mouth. All the other rolls are incredibly tasty as well. I definitely wouldn't consider this a "traditional" sushi place. They have definitely modernized sushi to include some "El Paso" twists and to appeal to a broader palate. I think they've done a magnificent job, and I haven't tried one sushi roll I don't like. Definitely worth a try, and if they're packed and you didn't make a reservation on a busy Friday night, I would pop on over to Sintini and order from there. read more

Love this place for the food and the sushi. For anyone in the mood for a Benihana experience, this is the place in El Paso to go. Some of the Sushi rolls are incredibly vibrant and unique, while being prepared very well. I'm never disappointed. The chefs give the standard show at the grill, which always pleases. The food is always good, and even though it seems a little pricey at $20 a plate, you get a good steak, veggies, rice, shrimp, and entertainment at the table. Stopped into Koze last night on a whim, no problem getting seated at the grill (which I have been told you sometimes will need reservations here - FYI). Staff was very prompt with drinks, taking orders, and delivering appetizers as well. The Chef was great, not a big "production" type style as at some of the tables, but I believe that was because there was a small child at our table who was a little skittish of fire, etc. The food was fantastic (I had Sea Bass, my friend had the NY Strip - we shared), fresh meats and vegetables, cooked very well and not over seasoned. Overall, a great experience, and we will definitely return. My only detractor about the place is that it isn't a full bar, only wine and beer, but we made up for that at Sin-Tini next door after the meal. Great place for a great meal. read more

Koze, where do I start? Appetizers? Great. Entrees? Delicious. Service? Friendly and attentive. At the time I wrote this review it must have been about the 12th time(?) that I have been here, and let me tell you the food never fails to impress. The experience starts with a Mizo soup and a salad. Afterwards the chef comes (in the case of the teppan grill) and starts making the delicious rice along with the vegetables and the entree that you order. Throughout this time, the chef is making jokes and tricks. The whole experience is just fun and whimsical, as if you were watching a show. I usually order the filet mignon and dynamite. The steak is always cooked the way I like it, and the dynamite (which is a combination of scallops and shrimp topped with a delicious sriracha sauce) is also quite marvelous. If you don't like steak or seafood they also have chicken or duck. If you haven't experienced Koze before I recommend you stop doing whatever you might be doing and run!!! Koze is in a great location on Mesa Street near a trendy shop and a martini bar. They had a wide array of sushi, but it was very pricy. I don't remember the roll off of the specialty menu, which was spicy and very good. We also shared the OMG Roll- a whole soft-shell crab, avocado, spicy tuna, and tobiko (no rice, no seaweed). Good, but not $18 good. We would return, but probably for a drink and appetizer before moving to another location for dinner. read more

I've been going to Koze for some time now, and I must say that it has never disappointed me. The hibachi style cooking is always excellent, and everything I've had has always been cooked to perfection. On my last visit, I had the Filet Mignon and Calamari, and as this was my first time having calamari without it being breaded and fried, I was curious, but it came out tender and delicious, the steak was excellently cooked to a perfect medium and left me wanting more. The sushi here is also quite good, they offer a wide variety of rolls, and while it's a little more expensive ($10+ for the specialty rolls), the rolls are large and well prepared, albeit a little hard to eat because of their size. Great drink selections, whether you like wine, sake, beer, or mixed drinks, and it's reasonably priced as well. I don't know how this restaurant attained a $$$$ rating, as the price-quality-portion size is really quite reasonable. The only negative to Koze is the service can be spotty. I've had nights where the hostess and servers were spot on, and unfortunately on my last visit the hostess seemed quite lost in the busy atmosphere of a Friday night, while our server was very busy and often times took a while to come check on us. The chefs, whether it be the sushi or the hibachi, are excellent and prepare the food diligently and seem to enjoy what they're doing. These guys usually hang out at Sin Tini after the restaurant closes down. Overall, if you haven't been to Koze yet, you're in for a treat. I think they need to upgrade on the size of the establishment, but unfortunately there's limited room in the plaza they're located in. This is definitely the best hibachi style restaurant in El Paso, and I would place it up there for the sushi as well. read more

Impressed with the sushi. Calamari fritters were good, both rolls were excellent. Best of all, the sushi has great portion of fish versus rice. On the downside, almost every single sushi item on the menu had jalapeños or spicy tuna. I love both of those things, but don't think it belongs on every sushi roll. I am not a sushi connoisseur by any means; in fact, last night was the first time I've had sushi since trying it several years ago (it was drenched in soy sauce, so I never knew if I disliked the sushi or the sauce). I played it safe by ordering a cooked entrée, the grilled chicken, which was excellent. I didn't care for the vegetable sides I ordered; the butternut squash didn't have a great flavor nor did the baby spinach. I was accompanied by two of my friends, who ordered very different items. One friend ordered the crab cakes. I tried them, but I didn't really like them. They were too "fishy" for me. My other friend ordered sushi, the spicy tuna and the unagi rolls. I tried both, even though I knew the unagi was eel (What can I say, I was feeling brave.). I didn't like the unagi as much as the tuna; the unagi didn't have a lot of flavor. Of course, I had already tried the tuna by that point, which may have overloaded my palate. The tuna was delicious. It is spicy, in a very good way, so I would suggest having some water or tea on hand. My friends ordered the riesling. One ordered the semi-sweet; the other, the sweet. They said both wines were good. I'll have to take their word for it. The environment is nice. It's a great place to go with a small group of friends or on a date. The interior combines an industrial style (you can see the ducts and such in the ceiling) with Japan (paintings, lighting, bamboo, et cetera). We received excellent service from our waiter. He was a very good sport about the un-birthday birthday we were celebrating. The hostess and manager (?) also were hospitable. read more
