Miso soup and Cold noodle salad had pieces
    Onglee X.

Always a favorite spot to eat when we visit Seattle. It's a small family owned restaurant that serves high quality sashimi. I ordered the nigori sake while my partner ordered the house hot sake. We were served hot miso soup and a cold noodle salad. It was a rainy day so both were comforting, I love that the cold noodle salad had pieces of apple or pear , it gave it a nice sweet crunch to the dish. We also ordered the chefs choice sashimi assortment, creamy scallop maki and the ikura with quail egg, as well as a bowl of rice. We didn't order many dishes but everything was plenty. We loved the creamy scallop maki, fresh, simple and delicious. Raw scallop has become one of our favorites, it was also included in our sashimi assortment as well. The mackerel was also one of our favorites as well. Surprisingly, the salmon was our least favorite sashimi cut. It's always a treat for us to come back to this restaurant.

After living in Seattle for many years, I finally had a chance to try this famous sushi spot in Lake City. This is a family owned sushi restaurant that's popular for a reason. Their servings of sushi are some of the freshest you can get in the area and focus more on traditional style of serving sushi rather than having trendy rolls that other restaurants might serve. Their only drawback is that it can be a bit pricey, but you are getting good quality for what you're paying. While I can't keep going every week (I would if I could), this is definitely a top sushi spot that doesn't disappoint. The service was great and it was a nice casual place to sit down and eat at.

We have been going to Toyoda Sushi for years. It's a well kept sushi secret in the Greater Seattle area. It's perhaps because it sits in a quiet place in Lake City, where there is no foot traffic. We've tried many dishes here in the past and we've always enjoyed it. But last night we came for the Sashimi platter which my wife and I shared and devoured. It's not cheap, but it's surely worth the price---the plate filled with an assortment of fresh fish, scallops, squid and shrimps. It's as gorgeous looking as it tasted. It comes with miso soup and the Japanese cold noodle salad. We each ordered a bowl of rice. Perfect! Service is super efficient and friendly. The interior has a feel of old Tokyo, lots of wood. The owners and servers here have been here for years---feels like family when you come here. There's lots of parking in the front and back. Only cash or Venmo are the forms of payment. This is our place to go for special occasions---birthdays, graduation, etc. No fuss, just great sushi.

Excellent fish quality great staff, big pieces of fish. I love this place. Get there early. Not pictured but veggie tempura and black cod are incredible.

I half understand the hype. I got here on a Saturday, 10 minutes before they opened. There was no one there, and we ended up being the first in line. By the time they opened, the line went past their storefront. By 5:05 there were groups waiting for a table. The vibes inside are definitely cozy. It's bigger than it seems from the outside. We sat and were greeted immediately with water or tea, miso soup, and an interesting noodle salad. The miso soup had spinach instead of seaweed, and the noodle salad was very mayo-y. My partner liked it, I wasn't much of a fan. Okay sushi time. I ordered a few orders of sashimi, my partner ordered the chefs assortment of nigiri and rolls. Fish quality was pretty good! The proportion of rice to fish was really good too. Small critique being that the nigiris fell apart really easily; rice wasn't balled together well enough? Service was really nice. There were many groups waiting, but we never felt rushed. You pay via cash, Venmo, or zelle which is fine. Overall, it was pretty good! But for the price ($10 for 2 nigiri??), and for how far out it is, I don't think it's worth it. Worth a try for sure though!

Decent place to get sushi in North Seattle. Super friendly service with complementary miso soup and a salad of some sort. For the same price of a sushi spot in downtown Seattle or Capitol Hill, I have noticed that this place is pretty pricey, especially if they are preferring Venmo or Zelle for a payment. Besides that turn off, the food was OK, I would rather go to Momiji instead.

Generous noodle salad and miso to start (7/10/24)

I had been a regular at Toyoda Sushi, located in Seattle's Lake City neighborhood, since the early 1990s. Definitely preYelp and was quite the novice. Honestly, I don't recall when and why I had stopped going though. But feeling nostalgic, I decided to stop by for dinner (7/10/24). I lucked out with free nearby street parking, which was sheer luck with the Lake Coty Farmers Market on Thursdays. A total spontaneous dining decision and recalled having to patiently wait for a table or seating at the sushi counter in years past. No challenge this evening and was able to be seated at a two top with a menu. 25 to 30 years had passed, yet me and Helen still recognized each other. I was amazed that her 33 year old son was now making sushi alongside his Dad. I remember him and another sibling as young kids. I was provided a menu, ice water, and the generous starters of house noodle salad and miso soup. The menu had a great section about the family and restaurant's history...celebrating 35 years! Also there's information on payment. No cards. Only cash, check, Venmo, or Zelle are accepted. The house noodle salad had changed from a toothsome udon to some other noodle similar to linguine, still tossed with a creamy sauce, plus bits of surimi and apple. The miso got one's palate ready. I was also given an order of agedashi tofu. That was nice...crunchy, hot, delicate tofu with a tasty broth and green onion. Great anticipation for the sushi, an order each of hamachi/yellowfish & shake/salmon nigiri, plus a negi toro/fatty tuna roll. My hotate/scallop was omitted, but received extra slices of salmon. Nigiri were huge, easily equivalent to 4 pieces elsewhere. The fish was fresh and served at optimal temperature. I was definitely feeling very full, so I inquired about some hot tea to wrap up my dinner. It gave me an opportunity to take in literally being in the moment. Toyoda Sushi is exactly as I remembered it...the faded photos at the entrance, the anticipation, the pleasant wall art, on point seamless service, exuberant convos at the sushi counter, and the no frills, quality menu items. Fairly full onsite dining, but also brisk takeout. It is that welcoming neighborhood spot that literally spans generations. 4 stars + 1 more for an overall positive experience. 35 years as a family run business speaks volumes.

    Sushi Assortment

We were seated very quickly and were provided miso soup. Very cozy and a good amount of seating. Got the sushi assortment ($66) to share with my boyfriend. While the portions were gracious, I do feel the assortment of fish should suit the price point. As per the photo, the assortment included unagi, cooked ebi, hokkigai, and tamago. I was a bit disappointed to see them in a $66 nigiri assortment. My boyfriend who loves salmon did not find the salmon enjoyable. It was not as smooth or fatty as salmon nigiri we've had from other establishments. But the portion size, the tuna, and the spicy tuna roll that came with the sushi assortment were all enjoyable.

The missus and I have come a couple of times now. The most recent was a Saturday (June 2024) right when they opened. There were many groups waiting but we still made it for first seating. We like the vibe of the place - and now that we've actually been to Japan, it's nice to see an authentic Japanese place in Seattle in a different light. There's 45 total seats - 6 tables of 4, 8 tables for 2, and the rest at the sushi bar. At around 520pm there were maybe 6-10 seats (total remaining) - so definitely get here early if you want to get a seat on a busy weekend! The ambiance is quiet but the place is small enough you can hear everyone else's conversations. The decor is very Japanese - which makes sense, it's owned by a Japanese family. The service is fluid, chaotic, but organized. I never worried about water refills and completed dishes were promptly removed. The primary complaint I have is the drinks are all waaaay expensive - like a soda costs $2.75? The beer options are the generic Kirin, Asahi, and Sapporo, for $10/$15 (small/large)?! And I can't use credit card here? (cash, Zelle, or Venmo "personal" only - avoids service fees I guess?) hmm, that's unfortunate. Also the street parking is sparse - so it's super sketchy to park in the Elliott Bay Brewing parking lot (next door, kind of?), but given that there's no one there, I'm sure they won't notice. Food-wise, the most recent time I ordered a combo B and the missus ordered the sushi assortment. I had to order a rice separately, because the combo (what) doesn't come with it? The croquette and the karaage were both good; gyoza was meh. The sushi pieces were big but missus felt the quality was worse the second time here. Total came out to $130 after tip, which we used Venmo for ("personal"). Verdict: would do takeout here for big groups, but not sure if we'd keep coming here. It's decent, but it didn't hit the same way (quality-wise) that we expected it to.

    Vegetable tempura
    Mar K.

It's always busy. And it's really generous portions of fresh and delicious sushi. The prices reflect the quality and generous portions. It was $60 for the large sushi platter which comes with six piece roll and 11 pieces of fish sushi, then two pieces of egg for dessert. The tempura sushi combo is about $35 and comes with at least two shrimp tempura and a plate full of vegetable tempura along with two maki rolls. This is very filling and a satisfying meal. Next to us the neighbors ordered the large sashimi platter. For $90 it was amazing. All meals come with complementary noodle salad and miso tofu seaweed soup. The hostess is really grounded and hospitable. She's impressively professional, calmly letting us know we will get seated without overpromising. The wait staff is excellent. Your water is always filled and empty dishes disappear very quickly quickly. It's a bustling space with happy people eating good food. Street parking pin rough during dinner time so try around back.

    Smoked Salmon and cream cheese

We got spicy tuna rolls, smoked salmon and cream cheese rolls And calamari, this is some of the best sushi I've ever had. There was a line before they even opened (good sign in my opinion) I'll be coming back that's for sure. Also everything is expensive now a days, when it comes to good sushi, it's worth it:)

    Sashimi set

We came here on a Thursday right around dinner time at 6pm and could get seated right away. A queue started forming shortly after, so I'd recommend arriving before 6! The restaurant has a cozy, casual Japanese vibe. There is bar and table seating, but the restaurant isn't very big. REGULAR SASHIMI SET - 5/5 RAINBOW FUTOMAKI -5/5 SUSHI SET - 3.5/5 The sashimi quality was amazing. I definitely overestimated how much we could eat, because the sashimi set was huge! We ordered the regular sashimi set - although pricy, there was so much variety and the fish was really fresh and sweet. The rainbow futomaki also tasted amazing. The roll was packed with mixed sashimi fish making every bite enjoyable. I didn't enjoy the sushi set as much - while the spicy tuna roll was good, the nigiri tasted okay. Sharing these 3 things among 3 people was more than enough and we had leftovers. Service was okay. It was odd that they only accepted payment via Venmo or Zelle - no credit cards or cash. Although on the pricier end, I'd definitely come for the Sashimi set and rainbow futomaki!

    Scallop Maki (-$20)

Came back here two weeks later on a weekend since my first visit. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Let the photos speak for itself! The portion has reduced BIG TIME! Ebi (sweet shrimp), octopus, kanpachi?and mackerel? has the most obvious volume reduction. Other cuts have smaller portion and some of them are tiny longer rectangular cuts instead of the typical wide sashimi cuts. Most importantly I think they have different menu price for weekdays VS weekend? I swear it was closer to $80 on my first weekday visit VS $100 for my weekend visit! Service as usual minimal and hard to get their attention and you have to attempt again and again to flag them down for anything you need... AND most importantly this time they just added tips into their check without giving a heads up (and even though we are just a party of 4)! Ridiculous! I am not against it as long as I was given a heads-up so I know what I am walking into, but sliding it into the check without former and formal notice IS CONSIDERED A DISHONEST PRACTICE imo. Most importantly you would not know if they charged you how much tips since their check never actually list the price and sum and tips/tax amount but just a grand total. I would never come back and I will now advise against my friends and family to visit here.

Reservations during off peak dinner hours aren't too difficult to get on a weeknight and street parking was fairly easy to find. The omakase / tasting menu is 19 bites, which is a decent amount of food, but overall the fish quality was really disappointing. There were only about 4-5 pieces of nigiri that tasted fresh and clean; the white fish that you start with in particular were just not a fun texture or flavor. The shellfish course and sweet shrimp were solid though. Unfortunately, besides the fish, the rice was a total flop too. It just felt dried out as if they had been pre portioned well ahead of time and under seasoned. Part of the joy of a course menu, if you want slightly warm / room temperature rice against the cool fish, but you get zero of that contrast here.

Get a cup of coffee and take a deep breath. This is a long-winded story…read more About 13 years ago, while vacationing in Seattle, we took a food tour. Our food tour was very intimate, just the two of us plus the guide. One of the restaurants we visited was called Shiro. We arrived mid-afternoon, while the restaurant was closed to the public. We were each served two pieces of Nigiri and told the story about Shiro. The two pieces that we were served were phenomenal and the story fascinating. We found out when Chef Shiro would be working next and cancelled another dinner reservation so we could try more of his food. When we arrived before opening time, there was already a woman waiting at the door. After us, a Seattle software engineer and three of his Canadian co-workers arrived. We had all arrived early because sitting at the bar in front of Shiro was on a first come, first served basis, reservations were not taken for that privilege. The year after we dined, we read that Shiro had retired. We were so disappointed that we would not get to eat his food again. Then we learned that Shiro opened a new restaurant and we planned on making a trip up to Seattle. Twelve years later, we finally made it. Reservations were made through opentable.com two months in advance. We wanted the Omakase, sitting at the bar, in front of the Master. Well, when we arrived, we found that Shiro only works on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. (sigh) Still, we had a great meal prepared by an amazing chef who hailed from Laos, whose name escapes me now. We had a pretty good conversation despite the background noise from the rest of the restaurant. The presentation was beautiful as you can see from my pictures. We asked for and received a menu list that detailed what we were being served. If you take the time to look at the photo captions, you can follow along with the menu list to see what each fish looked like. And then, on our way out, there was Shiro! We greeted him, thanked him and his Sushi Chef for a great meal. We asked for a photo and he had a staff member take the picture for us. Yes, Shiro is a slight man but not quite as small as the picture makes him look. The staffer changed my camera setting from 1x to .5x and because he was standing one step behind us, we look huge! At any rate, it was a meal that will remain with us to the end of our days. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu Shiro Kashiba & Staff!

It's currently around $15 per pound, and filling up one of the larger boxes usually costs me a little over $30, depending on what I pick. One thing I noticed this visit is that the price has definitely gone up since my first trip. I was also tempted by the giant inari nigiri so selected a few to bring home, but found out that it turned out to be mostly rice with just a little fish on top so I'm thinking next time, I'll probably stick more with the sushi rolls or smaller nigiri since they felt like the better value. The selection is HUGE though: sushi rolls, nigiri, gunkan, etc. The only negative for me is how fast-paced the experience feels. Every time I've visited (I guess just twice so far), the line has been packed and practically out the door, so there's not much time to stand there by the actual sushi bar and browse your options, especially since the shop is small and tight with the cluster of customers (you're literally standing inches away from each other). You're basically moving along with everyone else and making quick decisions as you go. I understand it keeps the line moving, but I personally prefer having a little more time to look. However, I did notice that the staff is constantly replenishing the options and keeping everything clean, so nothing seems to sit out for long. The fish tastes fresh, clean, and never fishy, and the texture is just right. Seating inside is pretty limited, so it's mostly a takeout spot. I have taken my box back to my hotel to enjoy in solitude (when I travelled to Seattle) or take it home to share with my kid (50+ mile drive since I recently moved to WA, but still tastes yummy after the ride). I also noticed plenty of people enjoying their sushi on the steps outside. Regarding price, my box usually ends up costing about the same as ordering about two specialty sushi rolls elsewhere, but being able to mix and match a variety of different pieces makes it a fun experience, especially since their rolls are creative, delicious, and worth trying. If you're a sushi lover (or even just looking to try a variety of sushi in one meal), I definitely recommend checking out FOB Sushi Bar!

My local friends recommended we come here for some authentic Japanese food while we were visiting…read more We texted ahead to reserve a table for 5 since it is a popular place. They don't take phone calls or reservations online - very old school. Which I think makes it more desirable. We ended up getting a special room with a "chabudai" style table! I was super excited because I've never experienced it before. What I did find pleasant was that although it was a lower table, there was an opening beneath the table that allowed your legs to hang rather than having to sit Indian style. Tyson was an amazing server. Was attentive, accommodated our allergies and was thoughtful with us having a young child. He was so pleasant and polite! We enjoyed the following: Baked miso glazed eggplant - YUM and melts in your mouth. Black Miso Cod Collar - this was pleasantly surprising and so delicious. Eat bite was tender and flavorful. Simple yet so appetizing. Sushi rolls were both fresh and well prepared. The nigiri was also great and fresh- not fishy. We additionally ordered takoyaki - which I normally don't love but this one was very tasty and I enjoyed the texture. Lastly karage chicken which came with a creamy slaw. Overall it was such a pleasant experience and we look forward to coming back!

Seattle's oldest Japanese restaurant, Maneki is awash in history and tradition, from the Beckoning…read moreCat decor that greets you at the entry, to the private Tatami rooms where you can eat at an authentic, low-slung chabudai table, seated on cushions on the floor. Established in 1904 in the heart of Japantown, the restaurant relocated to the ground floor of the NP Hotel after its original structure was ransacked during World War II, when Seattle's Japanese community was relocated to internment camps outside the city. The hotel where Maneki now resides served as repository for family heirlooms that were left behind during that embarrassing and tragic period of American history. The joy of dining at Maneki goes well beyond the restaurant's incomparable history. The traditional Japanese menu has something for every taste, from delicious Nigiri and Maki Sushi to noodle dishes and local seafood. Pair your meal with a classic Japanese cocktail or a cold bottle of Sake, and you'll understand why this is one of Seattle's best culinary experiences. Highly recommended.
