Service is slow, and food is not authentic at all. I ordered ramen and my friends ordered sushi. The pork in the ramen is super dry because they don't put the right meat and the veggie tastes also super dry. Neither the soup or noodles are that ok either. They do have a nice outdoor dining area, but we couldn't sit there. In general, this will be the first and the last time I eat here. read more

Whenever I came here is because Musashi was too full or not open. However, I really liked Kozue's udon especially in the cold days. I had a sashimi Bento after Fremont Fair. I have to say that I am not impressed with the food. The sashimi didn't taste fresh and the streamed rice was not cooked properly (it could possibly be leftovers. There was a big chuck that I could not break while eating the rice) It's not a terrible experience but definitely just a place to go if you need a quick bite and don't want to wait too long. read more

Kozue's $1 sushi happy hour is seriously awesome. The quality of sushi was definitely not the best, but decent and enjoyable. Their black cod bento box came with a nice variety of tempura, which I thought was surprisingly well executed. I hate grease-heavy over-battered wanna-be tempura. Kozue's tempura was light, crispy, and pretty delicate. The agedashi tofu in the bento box could have stayed in the fryer for a bit longer, but the black cod was pretty delicious. The hot tea (hoji-cha) they served was very good; the service was friendly and prompt. I like Kozue! read more

Though originally planning on going to Musashi's sushi next door, we realized, ooops, it's closed on Monday... no worries, there are two more sushi places within 2 minutes walking distance (Issian and Kozue). Kozue was closer and looked like a beach cabana, so my lady love and I decided to go for it. We were seated immediately and ordered a ton of happy hour selections. takoyaki - creamy batter w/ a beautiful mayo mussels - what a kick, great spice fried salmon - crunchy crunchy fatty delicious seaweed salad - delightful combination of acid and sweet shumai - filled w/ the cutest little shrimp, adorable teriyaki beef - sweet and savory goodness Each dish has flavor bursting out the seams, everyone joins in at the party in my mouth, what a culinary experience. my japanese friend from out of town wanted healthy food after a weekend of fried fast foods at the baseball games and fairs, etc.. and suggested we eat sushi. YAY! she found this place on yelp. luckily for us there was no wait, and we were seated at the window in this small restaurant of about 24-30 occupants. big groups were unfortunately waiting for the bigger tables to be emptied. there was a pretty big mad dash at around 8:00, i guess sunsets and sushi goes hand-in-hand. i ordered eel nigiri which was cheap, or so i thought, @ $1.75.. but you only get one! doesn't it usually come in a pair?! talk about major disappointment. they should really point that out. i also ordered the chef special pressed anago roll, but they ran out of anago. so i asked if they could just use unagi. they said they'd charge a dollar more, and i said sure, but they ended up not charging me -maybe it was because this roll was the most un-special of chef special rolls i've ever gotten. all that eel was drenched in the eel sauce and the roll didn't even hold well together with the shitake mushrooms. it fell apart and it was just ugh.. I paid $3.50 for their seaweed salad, and its the portion of something you could get at a sushi-conveyor place for $0.99. OI. rip-off. The only thing i enjoyed was the crunchy california roll, which was a light crunch and very very delicate and just scrumptious. that was only $5.00. I think I should have just gotten 4 of those and I would have been good to go. damn. my friend on the other hand got the chirashi sashimi bowl and fried oysters appetizer. she let me have one of the oysters. those were good and pretty meaty for what you pay. she thought the chirashi was okay but had this complaint: "they gave me strange cuts, giving me leftovers of the fillet, like a lot of corner (mid-shaped) pieces that you would only serve to your employees. sushi should be an art form. if my japanese mom saw that, she'd be pissed." hahaha.. we passed musashi's 3 times and it was so crowded... maybe we'll try that place some other time. but yeah, wouldn't come here again most likely, especially since its out of the way and it just adds to the many ways to break the bank. read more

What a great restaurant! I've eaten dinner there twice in the past couple of weeks and each meal was a really pleasant surprise; and reasonably priced too! I tried a seafood hotpot that was really good last week, but the Udon Vongole was a major treat the last time. Its a Japanese take on an Italian recipe. Clams in a tasty broth over udon noodles. Dynamite! The basic 8 piece sushi platter was pretty good too. Not on a par with Maneki's sushi, perhaps, but for a convenient Wallingford restaurant, you'll be hard pressed to beat it. read more

In my world of places for sushi, Kozue is a nice replacement if my favs are closed. I've been there once for dinner and twice for lunch. I really heart their $1 sushi during lunch. That's a good deal! I don't really have any specifics on what items are the best, nor can I say that the establishment is extraordinary on service or atmosphere. I missed going to Musashi and wanted to go last Friday, but obviously they were totally full with people waiting out the door. In addition, honey bunny was in the mood for udon. So we decided to give Kozue, who's supposed to be famous for its udon, a try. They are tucked in by the big and glamorous looking Thai restaurant next door. Pretty small place, fits about 20-30 people. There was a little wait too but we got seated relatively quickly. They have a menu full of creatively named sushi's (which I tried out 3 for $20). House roll was interesting with the thin egg wrap (instead of seaweed) but doesn't taste very much, spicy scallop wasn't spicy enough but wasn't bad, the hidden tuna crouching shrimp (or something) was the most fun and special, but the sauce or shrimp tempura seem to have warmed it up a bit so it was a little weird. Honey bunny went straight for the udon which was tasty, and my other friend got her spicy tuna and rice craving satisfied with spicy tuna don (must say it looked a bit funny...Spicy tuna is made by mixing some hot sauce into a mush of tuna, so the rice bowl is basically covered with a mush of tuna...hehehehehe.) We also ordered a large cold sake shared by 2; they have a pretty good selection. On and all, the experience was good and there's certainly more to try out. pretty solid happy hour. Runs from open to 9pm on weekdays. Lots of food options (maybe 15 different plates)- all $3. Portions are pretty tiny- but the quality was good. Tried the Roll of the Day (spicy scallop)- tasty. Calamari with cod roe sauce- average Teriyaki Beef- very good White fish sashimi- nice and fresh, tasted great Albacore Poke- nice- but a crazy ripoff given that it had only 5 very small peices of fish Wasabi Octopus- nice- but again- lacking octopus. Rest of the table had other plates. Spicy tofu was one of the favorites of the table. Wine is $2.75 during HH, Large Sake was $3.50. Got pretty busy at 6ish. I work on 45th very close to Kozue and it's always a good lunch backup. The restaurant has changed several hands and gone through several reincarnations, but the menu offerings have stayed pretty much the same - sushi rolls, sashimi, teryaki, udon noodles, and even Korean bibimbap, just to name a few. The food is usually fresh and good and reasonably priced for Japanese in the Wallingford area. I usually get takeout and find the portions a bit on the small side (though there's always an abundance of rice). Does a good lunch business and happy hour too, it seems. The website for this restaurant, unfortunately, is much nicer than the actual restaurant. Up close and personal, this place is really quite bad. We had been recommended to this spot by one of my girlfriend's co-workers so I called ahead to see if reservations were needed. Instead of telling me that they weren't really ever that busy the waitress booked me a reservation for the sushi bar. Upon arriving we found out that the sushi bar is a very narrow little counter with 4 seats. Glancing at this counter setup and the appearance of the fish in the case we opted to sit out side. My dinner companion was set on sushi and despite my warnings order a couple orders of nigiri. The maguro was dry looking and slightly turning brown on the edges. The hamachi looked ok besides being cut much too thick but it tasted pretty bad. We also ordered the "miso marinated" beef and asparagus kabobs thinking they would be like gyu-niku miso zuke teriyaki. They came out and it was quickly obvious that the beef had been sauteed then sliced and added to the skewer with some inch long pieces of asparagus which were precooked and still cold. The "miso marinated" taste was no where to be found. Luckily we usually like to order a few small things at a time so there was only one other dish we had to slog through before we could leave. The final challenge was the 'Autumn Mackerel' pressed sushi which was truly frightening. This was 5 pieces of barely vinegared and salted mackerel fillet, cut straight through the filet in pieces a half inch tall and nearly and inch wide. These were then 'pressed' onto wads of sushi rice ( not using a oshibako like most oshizushi ) and topped with seaweed salad and shredded pickled ginger. I tried one bite of this dubious looking pile and found a couple large bones still hidden in the fish so I spit it out. We paid the tab and went over to Chiso in Fremont to have a proper meal. read more

Had a very bad sushi experience here last weekend. I went in for happy hour to try their sushi hoping to find a cool new place to eat within walking distance of my apartment. Instead I was served really old and rotten tasting fish. The miso soup and cheap beer were the only good parts of the meal that I had. This was the only sushi place open for a late lunch on Saturday. Musashi's was closed at 2 or 2:30, and my sister and I were really craving sushi for lunch and did not want to go to QFC and grab sushi from their counter. They have very reasonable prices for sushi and a wide variety of options of hot food, but we only ordered sushi. The lava roll we ordered was by far our favorite roll we got. Nothing was disappointing and would definitely return here for the happy hour and sushi. They also have a deck which is nice during summer/fall to sit outside. read more

Kozue is decent, but not wow-worthy. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful (if a little hands off) and the happy hour deals are indeed a good deal; however, nothing that i had was better than average. I ordered a bento combo with salmon teriyaki and tempura -- it also came with miso, rice, and a few california rolls. Everything was passable -- tempura was alright and not too greasy, california rolls were fairly standard and miso was good. I was pretty disappointed by the salmon teriyaki, though. Maybe I've been spoiled at Koi, but there, it's a salmon filet with a thick and delicious sauce based over it (and a little extra in the bento). Kozue's version is lightly breaded and fried, with essentially ZERO sauce on it. There was a small driblet of it in the bento, but nothing which contributed towards the flavor. Overall, a decent place to go with good happy hour specials, but the food quality IMO was just average. read more

It's all about the Lava roll and the Salmon on the beach! ..but now hearing that everyone loves the bentos and such I'm going to dig in that portion of the menu. I had the philly roll (yum) seaweed salad (double yum!), inari (yum), tamago (pretty good), and some weird crepe cranberry sauce, cream cheese, salmon, and lettuce wrap (WEIRD and NOT yum). Overall the food was good except that weird crepe thing...I have no idea what it is. We ordered it because it seemed so odd, but it was just that...ODD. I think it was trying to be like the turkey wraps with cranberry sauce and cream cheese but just fell flat and no one wanted to eat it after tasting it. Avoid like the plague. What brought it down for me though was the fact that they wouldn't let us split our bill with our credit cards. I get it, it's difficult and cumbersome, but it was just the way she said it...rubbed me the wrong way. They also included the tip for us. No, I don't mean it was a gratuity...she actually added it on herself onto the credit card bill and totaled it for us. WEIRD. Overall, pretty tasty...but service was a bit weird. read more

My friend and I came here on a Monday night, and it was still packed. While the food is a bit more expensive than other sushi places, the taste is really very good. I had the shrimp tempura and the dumplings. And I am still craving some of those dumplings a day later. Kozue is my go to Japanese Happy Hour in Wallingford. And wanna know the best thing? It's like always happy hour here! Don't be fooled by their happy hours on their website, it's almost always happy hour. Great small plates, my boyfriend loves their spicy tofu. Happy hour roll rotates daily, and I love their crunchy Philly roll. A few items on their happy hour menu have been hit or miss, but most everything has been tasty. The place is usually busy, but no problem getting a table unlike Mushashi's down the street which is too nutso for me. The staff is friendly and quick too. read more

I would prefer to give this a rating of 3.5 stars instead of the full 4 because it isn't my favorite sushi place in town but it will do in a pinch and the value is there. I would recommend this as a middle of the road sushi spot for a basic night out when you want that sushi fix but you don't want to break the bank. First let me say, Kozue is much cuter on the inside than it appears on the outside. I had been walking by this place for months before I happened to stop in for Happy Hour. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the restaurant is rather small so I would advise going early on Fridays and Saturdays because it often has a wait around popular dinner times. I think this is also due to the fact that Happy Hour runs until 6:30 on Friday and Saturday. The Happy Hour menu is decent and it lasts for a long time each day. Everything on the HH Menu is $2.99 including a HH Roll that changes day to day. Most of the other options are fried, which is kind of a bummer. I wish they had a few more basic rolls to choose from (avocado or cucumber). I did appreciate that the waitress came around to each table at the end of HH to ask if anyone wanted anything before it ended. The food is decent and the prices are great. We ordered 4 rolls (including 2 of the HH specials) and none of them exceeded $6.50. They have some fancier rolls for higher prices but I appreciate the variety, it really lets you set your budget. My one complaint is that the sushi ingredients taste rather mushy. You can't taste the different components of the rolls, they all blend together. But this is a pretty minor complaint given that the flavor is still good, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. read more

I think this place have changed their owner, the menu got slightly changed, price adjusted, new menu items, different style of cooking. I had a egg and unagi donburi and some sushi, the sushi taste the same as usual but the donburi have been slighty changed. it used to be a pan of egg with green onion and unagi over rice. But this added alot of sauce this time. I feel like I am drinking a soup since it was half full of sauce. It taste okie, but I liked the old way. This place have great sushi, their $1 sushi are quite famous, always packed during lunch time. We always drive from south beacon hill just to eat there, because it worth it. read more

My preferred place for sushi in Wallingford. $1 nigiri at lunch and they always have yummy rolls. I've had just about everything on the lunch menu (Teriyaki combos are pretty good, though nothing to write home about; their kitsune udon is delicious), but lately I've been just going with their house salad (Romaine, carrots, cucumbers, asparagus, tofu, avocado, with a miso sesame dressing), along with some nigiri. I love the cozy atmosphere here and they have some great appetizers! We got the Chu-Hi grapefruit sake which was so good and so cheap! We also had- -spicy oysters, probably not going to get these again. -assorted tempura, good, nice little side dish to have while enjoying other food. -black cod and tofu, which was good but I wish the fish was a little softer and more sauce on both the skewers. Beer is cheap. Monk fish liver is great. We ordered toro but they brought out regular tuna with no marble. When we questioned it they said that is toro. The calamari is tasteless and fatty. Someone else that we know buys their gyoza all the time for their family and once shared them at a group setting. They seemed to be quite popular. The gyoza have a nice texture and the filling is pretty delicious. The dipping sauce is soy with a hint of spiciness. They also serve some spicy cooked bean sprouts that are very bean-y that are also quite good. This one menu item is pretty good, but a little pricy. I usually get two orders and it costs over $10 with tip and each order has just 5 gyoza that aren't that big. 4 out of 5.... I wanted to order one happy hour special while I was there to try it out and see if I like it. They said that I couldn't order it to go. Not sure why? They have a sign that says that you can't order one item to go, but I was ordering two already. Lastly, when I order two orders, they always want to package the two together into one box, even though it is for two people and I plan on dropping one order off with a person. Then the next time I say make sure it is in two boxes and they only give me one set of chopsticks? Each time I come, they fuss over how many boxes I need. Really? Is it that big a deal to package two boxes for two orders with two sets of chopsticks? Come on! They are also fussy about not coming in a minute before the opening time, even if they are ready for business to open. This place is fantastic. It's cozy, but there is plenty of room. My single complaint is the TV in the corner... no one is ever watching it, and it's just distracting and ugly. (No one would miss it if it were gone.) Foodwise, they have everything you could want, which is great if you have a diverse group of eaters with you. The ramen may not be as good as Izakaya Kizuki, but the rest of the food is really good, (the spicy terikyaki beef and bento boxes are always worth ordering), and more than makes up for it. Not to mention, this is one of the only sushi places I've found in Seattle that is actually open before 4:30pm on the weekend! read more

The Sushi here is pretty good, but not great. The real forte is in the other Japanese dishes. The specials on the wall are always a great bet, and fun to try something new. I really like this little sushi place in Wallingford. The food is very good and the fish is always fresh, even on Mondays. I've been told that this place gets their salmon whole, as opposed to them being chopped up into small portions. I've never had a bad experience here. The service is good and the cooks are very friendly and quite conversational (if you sit at the bar and feel like chopping it up a little with them). As with many places on 45th St in Wallingford, this places does not have off street parking.
