This one earns a solid 4/5. A few small tweaks would make it an easy 5/5 Well roasted coffee, served in a great environment with food and plenty of seating. Perfect combo for an amazing spot to work, and quite honestly the only place we trusted while visiting from out of town. Cortado came off a beautiful 3 group Strada. Not sure what that means? It's a Lamborghini to the coffee shop world. When used well and with good ingredients, you get some of the best espresso you've ever tasted. I watched it being made like a hawk. The barista used an auto dosing grinder, but there was no scale in sight to check the dose and make sure it was right (17.0g? 17.5g? 16.5g? Huge differences). Pulling the shot was also done without a scale, so no confirmation that the dose/yield/time was on point. So close. With all that criticism, the cortado was on point. A hint of bitter on the finish, but texture and temperature were perfect. Truly a good drink. The pour overs were all done with scales and timers. I love it. Downside here was all the hot water was pulled off the dispenser attached to the Fetco brewer in the back. This means the dispense temp was likely low, and it probably robbed the brewer of proper temp water for the next batch. Drip coffee was really good, and well poured. A bit under extracted (blame the temp) but well balanced. Again, a quick fix with a dedicated hot water dispenser and perfection. Likely the best coffee you can find in the city, and the baristas are doing all they can with the tools they have. read more

TL;DR: try the chicken biscuits with honey/hot sauce, but they run out quick. For lunch / dinner the burgers are a great deal and the sides, esp Mac and cheese are great. Great coffee place that over the years has transformed into a sit down breakfast, lunch and dinner place as well. It's right in the smack of downtown, especially near a lot of the new housing that has been built up. Again, traditionally known as a coffee place, but has turned into a breakfast and lunch and dinner place. Everyone knows how good the coffee is at Krankies, but I'll focus in on the food. Breakfast: HIGHLY recommend the chicken biscuits but with honey and hot sauce!! Don't get the gravy, really, you need to try the hot sauce / honey version first. They are amazing and often run out really early, so get there early for these. Lunch / dinner: burgers are at a bargain price, but you can't get all of them done the way you want. The house burger does allow you the ability to have it down medium / well, etc. make sure to get / try the sides. I was curious given the name. I wandered in on a very rainy morning and was delightfully surprised. A converted space was open and people working there were friendly enough. The first morning I waded in with an iced coffee which was very nice. The second morning I went for the cortado which was perfect. Such a cool atmosphere and restaurant! Wednesday's is half off wine and had a delicious Rose'! I had the chicken bowl for dinner which was also a Wednesday special. The peanut sauce was amazing. The chicken was tender and moist. Would 10/10 go back. They had a variety of salad and sandwiches. Providing daily specials provided more options as well which I appreciated. Krankies, by far, is my favorite spot for breakfast. They have innovative, yet simple, menu items that are executed extremely well. I love their Seasonal Hash options. I've had the Pulled Pork Hash, as well as the Chicken Hash. They consist of roasted sweet potatoes, a perfectly cooked egg and a type of sauce (chimichurri/lime salsa). So so delightful! They also have incredible biscuits and huevos rancheros. And let's not forget the coffee. In my opinion, Krankies serves up some of the best coffee in the Triad. The staff has always been attentive and helpful, and it's such a neat atmosphere for a great meal. You can be seated indoors/outdoors by the hostess or just stop at the coffee bar for a quick stop. The iced almond milk latte was good nothing extremely special however it was one of the best I've had. In addition I also got the fried chicken biscuit with hot sauce and honey which was given the title of best biscuit in the triad by the magazine Our State. Wonderful brunch spot in downtown Winston-Salem. The lattes were on point, the food was great, and the atmosphere was ideal. We ordered the huevos rancheros and the chicken sandwich. The food did take awhile to get to our table (approx 30-35 minutes after ordering on a popular Saturday morning), however our waitress was apologetic and expedited getting the check to our table at least. Oh how this pains me to write this review. I am a HUGE fan of Krankies. I love the atmosphere (hate the parking) and I love the food (well I used to love it). I am a sucker for the avocado toast. For the longest time, they would serve it on this delicious bread (Caminos?). I would get the avocado toast, a coffee, and be in heaven. But then they started serving it on this terrible, store brand, bagged bread. Like the 67 cent a loaf Wal-Mart bread. So I stopped ordering it. In fact, after 2 times getting this overwhelmingly bad bread, we just stopped going to Krankies. But I missed this place. So we did return. I asked about my beloved avocado toast. Explained to the waiter my issue with the awful bread. But he had good news! "Krankies makes their own bread now." I was giddy and the avocado toast was ordered. He lied. Same old Wal Mart bread. I didn't even call him on it. I just shrugged, knowing I was not coming back to this place again. Why are you charging so much for something that is no longer special? It's service. My perception is Krankies is trying out different methods to manage the weekend breakfast crowds. Now it's pay at the counter and join the throngs in a few rounds of Game of Thrones fighting for a table. We headed outside and waited 22 minutes for a latte. Don't even ask an employee if your beverage is on the way. You will get a curt "if you have a number it's coming". So you've paid and wait and wait without any idea if it's 20 o 60 minutes. This place bleeds indie. I walk past a detention center and a railroad track to get there... see not one but THREE fixed gear bikes outside along with a rusty tin van. I walk past people in beatnik hats staring out to the horizon of.. rail road tracks and power lines? Then there's a very clean, crunchy counter with a dude swiping credit cards on an ipad. The drink menu is pretty typical with some fun summer drinks and booze thrown in. The coolest part about Krankie's is the big area with what looks like a coffee roasting station on one side, a stage to the back, and a little library to another side. Large tables and seats fill the rest. The not as cool part is the actual coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have a lot of coffee geeks around me (I'm talking like people who sort and roast their own beans). I have tasted a lot of great coffee, and Krankie's is not the best. They do roast and sell their own brand of coffee.
