There are so many wonderful things about Kula Lodge.. I don't even know where to start! We were looking for some new places to go on Maui instead of our usuals. I saw the umbrella tables and sweeping views online, and HAD to go! I'm so glad we did! Relaxing, peaceful dining, amazing food, and personal service! We have been here many times with no problems. I don't know what was going on yesterday but our experience wasn't very good. First, they brought my husband the wrong beer. Being a beer drinker he didn't make a big deal out of it. The service was really slow but there seemed to be only one waitress. Then they finally brought out our food, but hadn't served us our soup yet. We asked them to take it back and bring our soup. After another wait we received our soup. Since one person in our party didn't order soup we asked for his meal. Then the waitress can bustling over with the rest of our food and said she couldn't believe "the blonde boy" didn't bring all of us our food. We explained why and she slapped our food down next to our soups. I had upgraded to garlic Parmesan fries and they had none of either. For dessert I ordered the warm chocolate cake with ice cream, cake came, not warm, no ice cream but brought it on the side. When our bill came, 2 checks, all the receipts were mixed up and we ended paying for each others meals. All in all, a less than satisfying dining experience. read more

Born and raised on Maui and this was my first time to the Kula Lodge. I came here with my mom for a leisurely weekend breakfast. The water restrictions were still in effect, so patrons were given bottled water to start. The fish sandwich was pretty good and large, and you can never go wrong with banana Mac nut pancakes with coconut syrup. The views of central Maui and the west Maui mountains were amazing. read more

Friendly and accommodating staff. We didn't have reservations but was seated shortly after arriving. Beautiful views of Maui island. Food was delicious- Maui onion soup and Benedict were deliciously cooked to perfection. We also ordered a mochi waffle with the sauces on the side (ube jam, lilikoi butter and coconut cream)...all very delicious. Service was prompt but not too intrusive. The restaurant was wonderful for our breakfast, great food and service. This review is for the lodge. First of all, the website is extremely misleading about the accommodations. The lush gardens were in the restaurant and not available to us for our stay. Our view was of the parking lot and we had no place to walk around or hang out, except for in the old, dark room. The deck was dirty and in bad repair. The floor of our room was slanted and the furniture was old and minimal in our tiny room. The bathroom and bed were clean, but the rest of the room felt old and uncomfortable. If we had paid $100-$150 a night for this quality of room, I might have felt better about it, however it was $368 for the night. The property is also right on the main road to Haleakala national park, no not quiet and restful. These accommodations need a major upgrade. read more

Writing this review months after dining here was a terrible idea because I dont actually remember how the food was. But here's what I can say- the service was friendly, we were able to be seated out on the patio overlooking the valley which was gorgeous. The cement booth was really cold so bring an extra jacket to sit on if you're going in the AM. We did get a few rounds of drinks that didn't really pack a punch but the photo op cannot be beat. read more

Loved this place! My folks and my family came here for breakfast today and the location is spectacular! A little bit of a trek from Kaanapali but worth it. The grounds are lush with tons of tropical plants and succulents. Our server provided a bit of history mentioning that the location was a frequent hangout of the Rat Pack and that it had been around since WWII! The food was good but they could use something to set them apart from all the other more frequently visited establishments. Perhaps a special dessert or special cocktails. Either way, we'd love to come back! read more

After our spiritual journey with my niece and nephew halfway up to Haleakala, I decided to take them to Kula Lodge. It was their first time there. After ordering, we were complimentary gifted and appetizer, which was eggplant stuffed with a thin piece of rib eye, guda cheese, pickled onions , cherry tomatoes, and capers . We were so impressed that Chef Ulep Jr. came out to check how we were. He not only came out once he came out twice once when we were eating his special appetizer called Ahi Crudo. This featured seven slices of Ahi topped with Ano Farms Micro Cilantro, Mojo Verde, and his special 25 year old balsamic vinegar tapioca pearls, this was so awesome and tasty. The flavors just explode when the tapioca Pearl's birth on the fish. It was so amazing! The Paniolo Rib Eye seasoned with Maui coffee rub was made and cooked to perfection as requested medium rare. The Coq Au Vin was also very flavorful. The views of the Maui sunset were nice to see through their windows that surround the dining area. A lush flower garden outside also gives nice scenery. read more

After arriving for sunset and hiking at Haleakala Visitor Center from 5am-10:30am, we stopped here as it was at the base of the park for breakfast. They seated out party of 8 outside, and it was a lovely sunny day to eat. We ordered the hawaiian omelette with either Portuguese sausage (not as spicy as expected) or bacon, the banana macadamia nut pancakes, and florentine eggs benedict. All of them were delicious! Really great wood fired pizzas & such a beautiful patio/ garden. If you go check out the garden you can see the wood fired pizzas while they're being cooked. They have a happy hour from 3-5 where the pizzas and select appetizers are cheaper but the downfall is that you can't eat on the patio during that time. They do let you still go out/ walk around though. Service was top notch also. read more

Despite being forced to turn around from Haleakala due to the brush fire, stopping at the Kula Lodge for breakfast made the early morning trip worth it! My friend who lives on the island showed us this spot. It's a hidden gem. Service could have been a little better. We were the last one to be seated after we had checked in with a reservation prior to two other parties, which they seated first. Host came back looked at us. Told her we checked in before them and her response was that she didn't know when clearly she checked us in herself. Of course, I felt discriminated wanting to leave. Was meeting a friend there so decided to stay. They will give you the option to request for a server or scan a code to order your food. I suggest for a server because scanning the code you still have to add gratuity and service wasn't that great. He barely checked in with us. Why should I tip him? Food was good. We ordered brick oven pizzas. Delicious! The highlight of it all was the spectacular views of Maui. We were seated in the garden with a good view. You can also request to be seated indoors for the panoramic view. Either way, it's so pretty. Afterwards, you can walk around the garden. All kinds of plants and flowers. My favorite was the flowing fountains into a small pond. You can toss a coin and make a wish. Such a magical feeling. I do like this place and would revisit. Thank you to the staff who worked so hard to accommodate our party 11+ at the end of May. You were very busy for lunch and the wait for food was a bit longer than we would have liked. I honestly don't know how I've lived here all my life and have never been to this restaurant. Not that I didn't know about it, but just never went for some reason. We always default to Kula Bistro or Grandma's Coffee Shop when in this area. Last week my sister and I decided to try something new, especially because we had heard that they were under new ownership and that the new menu was great. We chose to sit outside because it was a nice day and the tables out there are just beyond cute. We came for an early lunch around 11:30 a.m., so thankfully, there was no wait. I've definitely passed by many times and seen a line of people waiting outside. From the hostess to the wait staff, everyone was so friendly and helpful. Ordering thru the QR code was easy and the food came out quickly. The coolest is that they have a wood fire pizza oven right outside! Our mimosas, pizzas, French onion soup and Caesar salad were all great. I am definitely a new fan and will be back! read more

My husband made reservations to sit outdoors but when we got there it was a bit breezy and cold so we decided to sit indoor. We had a perfect table by the window. This place is a gem! Must stop after Haleakala sunrise. Breakfast is not cheap, but you get what you're paying for. It's very tasty. We got smoked salmon benedict and macadamia banana pancakes. Both are amazing!!! Fresh in house smoked salmon! Abundant macadamia nuts and bananas. People are complaining about wait time, but be reasonable. Seems they have tours busses agreement and there two busses when we visited. They were clearly upfront with us telling that they are busy and can give us a table, but food would take the time. If you're in a rush, skip it, but if you are patient, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view and very good kitchen. They have a small nice garden as well to enjoy. read more

OMG! I haven't been to Kula Lodge since high school and I definitely remember that they had amazing waffles. But what I didn't remember was the amazing location and view. This establishment is now under new ownership. A lot of the workers said that they were new or it was their first day... but if they hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known. When we got there... we parked in the first parking lot because we were worried about getting a space and getting seated as there are no reservations available. I jumped out of the car to put our name in as I wanted to beat the tour bus patrons. I got in and the hostess asked me if I wanted to eat inside or outside... I wasn't sure so she showed me to the window table... and the view was gorgeous. Then she showed me a table outside that would be cleared in a few minutes. I wisely chose outside. The view. I was just enamored. And I'm from Maui! It was majestic and the weather was amazing. At the time we got there... about 8:50am they served both breakfast and lunch. And alcohol! Extra points right there! We ordered a bunch of dishes and each shared a little. The plating/presentation was nice. The taste was above average. Definitely better than the run of the mill selection and flavors. It was just an overall gorgeous experience. I can't wait to go back... for lunch. I want to try their pizza. Next time. If you're familiar with the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel, this restaurant does remind of that with its stained glass windows in the front, the cozy seating areas by the fire in the lobby. The stop in today was our first rest stop on the way down off Mount Haleakala. It's peaceful and pretty view is inviting fro either inside or outside. The outside seating is absolutely so much fun to be in the garden area. Take a short and slow walk around the garden before your meal as it is cooked to order so it's a good time to relax and find some happy in the wait. The crab cakes are delicious and maybe the best I've discovered so far, I really enjoyed having a squeeze of the kumquat that came along with it. We had come from the summit and wanted a little lunch before we continued our day. My husband looked this place up in hopes we could get lunch with a view. Unfortunately when we got there it was 2pm and the hostess said the tables near the window closes at 130pm and reopens at 3pm. I'm pregnant and hungry and wanted to eat. I inquired about the outdoor seating and she said it was only for graduates.. that's really bias in my opinion to not allow anyone else to seat outdoors unless you have a graduate student graduating to celebrate? On top of that, we were seated for 15mins and no waiter came to get our order nor give us water. Someone finally came.. we still had no plates nor cutleries etc while the table that came after us had everything on their table. Fine. Our pizza came and he was trying to serve it to the table that came after us. We tried waving him down but he went back to the kitchen so quickly. I had my husband go look for him to tell him it was our pizza he was trying to serve someone else. He paid attention to us and I truly felt that the service was horrible. We ate and wanted to leave quickly.. not excited to spend $30 on a pizza with view prices without a view price. Pizza was alright.. I'd rate 5/10. It was more like a $15 pizza. I hope someone else gets a better experience than we did! read more

Breakfast at Kula Lodge and Restaurant was included in our tour up to see the sunset. It took a little bit to get seated, but the view was phenomenal! It was a bit chilly out, so wish we had brought our warmer jackets with us from the tour bus. Due to all the guests (including a few tour buses), it took some extra time to get our food. We were pleasantly surprised to see the amount of food served to us. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Tasty and fresh. If I'm ever out in this area again one day, would love to stop in again for an enjoyable and peaceful meal. read more

Amazing views and great food. I stopped at the Kula Lodge on my way up Haleakalā. Almost everyone I spoke to when planning my trip mentioned the Kula Lodge as a must go to place. I am glad that I stopped by because I was not disappointed, the food was great. I went with the "Woodfire Pizza" and it was fantastic. It is fully customizable and the toppings tasted very fresh. I also tried the "Maui Rueben" which was another good option. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is in a nice dining area with large windows allowing you to see the beautiful nature and skyline. The outdoor seating is covered with open-air views of nature and the skyline with each group having their own private section. The service was a little slow (it was a result of being short-staffed) but I knew that before getting seated as the restaurant staff was kind enough to mention it just in case there was a time crunch.   Kula Lodge & Restaurant was a great place to stop on the way up Haleakalā. Both the food and the views made for a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. It is a terrific place to stop if get hungry or want a little break on your way up the volcano. It is a suitable place to go with anyone and you are sure to enjoy the experience. read more

We ate here after Haleakalā and find everything we had to be decent. * banana and macadamia nuts pancake: huge portion and excellent * chicken and mochi waffle: the chicken is delicious! Mochi waffle needs a little bit more flavor, too blend. * Hawaiian omelet: it's just an omelet and pretty small. * quiche: tiny piece of quiche with salad and fresh fruit. The quiche is excellent but I was definitely expecting a bigger piece. I was deeply disappointed that I wasn't able to sit outdoors as the area wasn't ready. My reservation was for outdoor seating so the restaurant should've given me advance notice that it's not available, not when I'm at the door. This place is not cheap and it would've been all worth it if we can sit outside. They did let us go down to the outdoor seating area after meal and it's absolutely beautiful. read more

We stayed at the Kula Lodge & Restaurant.  The Lodge is very rustic, we stayed one night in Cabin 5 which is the small room with a Queen Bed.  The bed was very soft and comfortable.  There is a heater, mini-fridge, and a microwave.  In mid December, it is a bit cold so remember to bring your warm weather clothes and rain gear.  I think this cabin could improve by building a stone walk-way to the door.  Overall, the check-in was very easy and the room was clean.  My favorite part of the time we spent was listening to the rain outside of our window in the morning.  We ate at the restaurant and had the loco-moco and the smoked salmon eggs benedict.  Oh wow that  hollandaise sauce was amazing.  Creamy and rich with a hit of acidity.  I know that there is new management here so I'm excited to see what they have planned for both the Lodge and the Restaurant. read more

The Kula Lodge may not have the best food on the island, but it is certainly a strong contender for best view on Maui. The high elevation allows you to see a gorgeous array of the island from the windows (indoor seating) or cabanas (outdoor seating.) You feel like you are up in a fancy treehouse! The pizzas here are very tasty and are cooked in a big pizza oven outside, as you watch. We have enjoyed a few different types of pizza here on previous visits. This is a great place to visit for lunch or brunch if you are in the Upcountry/Kula area. Perhaps make a day of it and stop by the lavender farm or MauiWine while you are in the area! There is also plenty of space to easily park, so no trouble there. The grounds are pretty and have nice flowers and outdoor features to enjoy. Definitely a unique spot! read more

We started with the charred prawns, the green salad and the onion soup - all excellent. My wife and I shared the swordfish (It was fantastic!), and our friend ordered the lamb chops. We have been told to come here for the view. We were not really hungry so I ordered a French onion soup and my wife and I both a drink. Amazing views. Drinks were great. The soup was not good at all. Such a shame. The cheese was barely melted and the soup was over the top salty. Turns out this place is known for their pizza with unique pizza ovens outdoors. Our waiter never informed us of this.
