This place has decently good sushi. I tried their edamame, sashimi, Spanish Bay roll (riceless), unagi roll, and salmon skin hand roll. Fish tasted fresh and was presented well. The place does't have a typical restaurant layout. The front part is rather dark and feels like a bar lounge. When you enter the back, it is a large airy space with plenty of tables. The tables are far apart so there is no crowded or intimate feeling. While a bit on the pricier side for sushi, it is on par for its downtown location.

Two friends/colleagues and I skipped out of a nearby conference to chow down on sushi and were so stoked on Kuma! We had good service and even scored some free sake when one of the wait staff misunderstood a request (likely because the dining room is so loud! not great acoustics because it's so cavernous, but bright and welcoming, too). I have to admit that I was a little intimidated by their extensive menu, but we loved pretty much everything we ordered. Left stuffed and satisfied!

Really friendly service, but kind of slow with the food. Got the platter with 8 rolls. To be honest, they all tasted kind of the same. It wasn't bad, but it was a lot of California-roll flavors. And there's a lot of sauce, so you're tasting the sauce more than the fish. Will try their chirashi next for something a little simpler.

Since my last visit the food quality and service has improved. We came to love the simple cut rolls.

If you're ever in Monterey County, be sure to check out my absolute favorite sushi bar called Kuma! This is our 2nd time coming to this restaurant and we will keep coming back. The "Lover Plate" for 2 is an especially good deal that features Chef's Choice of a special roll, 8 pieces of Nigiri, 2 hand rolls, 4 pieces of gyoza and wakame seaweed salad -- all for $65! You let the server know what you like and don't like and they will customize the meal for you! I finally went inside after only ever ordering their sushi from the wine bar next door, and the inside was not at all what I expected. The space feels more like a multipurpose ballroom than a traditional restaurant. It is one big open room with very high ceilings, tables and chairs spread out across the floor, and the sushi bar set up along the back wall. There is even a disco ball on the ceiling and a projector, so I am guessing they host other events or maybe karaoke nights that I just did not know about. Aside from the surprise of the interior layout, everything else was great. Our server (I think his name was Ridley (I don't have the receipt anymore sadly), though I might be butchering that) was friendly and on top of things. Drinks came out quickly, the sushi quality was exactly what I am used to from past orders, and I really have no complaints about anything we ate. Just updating my review to share some photos and give a better sense of what the inside looks like, but the food itself is still consistently good.

We don't get to Monterey enough from San Francisco, but when we do, Kuma is ALWAYS on our list of where we have to eat. We were in Japan for 2 weeks in October and we just didn't get enough sashimi. Kuma came to the sashimi rescue. The sashimi is incredibly fresh. No fishy smell here. No sirreee. Most importantly, our compliments to Sushi Chef Mike for his sashimi and sushi artistry and skills. He puts the WOW in our eyes and tummies. We always look forward to his chirashi bowl paired with cold Dasai 45 sake. Kanpai! If you're not sure where to dine while in Monterey, checkout Kuma for great Japanese food.

    BEEF TERIYAKI
    Julia V.

Kuma is a pretty good spot with good service overall, and we're usually seated quickly when we come in. First dine-in experience, we ordered some sushi and the beef teriyaki. What stood out to me about the beef teriyaki, was that it had a darker color and looked nicely caramelized, like it had cooked down into the sauce, which gave it great flavor and presentation (pictured). On return visits, though, it hasn't quite looked the same. The cut of beef always seems different and it doesn't appear as caramelized or cooked into the sauce the way it did that first time. It's still good, but I wish there was a little more consistency or made it how was my first time, because that first experience set the bar pretty high. Service is decent overall, although drink orders tend to come out a bit slow -- even on quieter evenings. The space itself is clean and modern, but the dining room feels a little sparse for how large it is. A bit more warmth in the decor could make it feel more inviting.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Staying near downtown Monterey and looking for a light dinner. Searched Yelp and Kuma Sushi jumped out at me. They have a no frills website. I mean really no frills. The home page shows their name, but no other info like address, phone number, location, contact, etc. You know, the usual stuff you'd find on a business website. You only see one link to their PDF menu, and it looks like an outdated menu ... since it has older (lower) prices and also doesn't like some of their newer more current offerings. It was challenging looking at Yelp page for any uploaded photos of their menu because many photos are years old (and you can't sort the photos by date to see the newest ones first). And many of the photos were uploaded sideways, so I have to turn my head sideways to try to read it. This is definitely a place that is better for dining in or ordering take out in person. I came up with a few things that looked interesting and did it the "old fashioned" way by calling the restaurant to place my take out order. They gave me an estimate of 45 minutes. This was a surprise, since it's a Monday night. Would have thought Mondays were slower. Anyhows, I was looking forward to trying this place, and was disappointed by a mix up with the order. Read on. I ordered these : -- Mixed Tempura appetizer $13 -- Whole Hearted Roll $18 Inside : Salmon, Avocado, Micro Cilantro Outside : Hamachi Toppings : Carpaccio Sauce, Green Onions, Garlic -- Rainbow Roll $17 Outside : 5 Assorted Fish Inside : Avocado, Crab, Cucumber Toppings : Green Onion, Masago The Whole Hearted Roll ($18) was excellent! It was so fresh tasting and unique. It was delicious and I would order it again. The Rainbow Roll ($17) was solid, and pretty standard. I probably should have taken a bite of this Rainbow Roll before the Whole Hearted Roll. LOL Because the Whole Hearted Roll outshines the Rainbow Roll by a lot. The menu offered 3 types of Tempura appetizer : Vegetable ($8), Shrimp ($13) and Mixed ($13). I ordered the Mixed Tempura and was surprised to find ZERO shrimp. Not one piece of shrimp in the Mixed Tempura. It was all veggies, 6 of 7 pieces of Veggies. Yet I was charged for the Mixed Tempura. I was definitely charged $13 for my mixed tempura appetizer that had no shrimp. The rolls were $17 and $18. The Tempura was $13. $17 + $18 + $13 = $48. Add 3.5% credit card payment fee brings it up to $49.69. And 9.25% Monterey Sales Tax added, to the combined cost of food + credit card fee, makes the order total $54.27. See photo of my receipt : order amount $49.69 + $4.60 tax = $54.29. It's 2 cents off, but close enough. Other than the tempura mix up, the food here was good. I may give them another try next time. I was also eyeing the Chirashi on the menu. Perhaps next time. Parking in downtown Monterey can be a challenge at times. I had to circle around before I found street parking.

I had the poke and an old fashioned. Both were amazing! Honestly, I can't wait to go back. My wife also enjoyed her rolls immensely!

Had the opportunity to dine here recently, and tried their: Dragon roll, hotate scallop nigiri, and chirashi bowl with choice of side salad (or miso soup). It all tasted fresh and delicious! Service was quick and friendly as well. The chirashi bowl was huge and had thick cuts of sashimi on top of a bed of rice. Would stop by again!

My very best friends first introduced my partner and me to this sushi spot on Alvarado Street, and we've been loyal customers for a couple of years now. The manager is always so welcoming and even recognizes us when we come in for our double date nights, which makes the experience feel extra special. We usually start the night with either the Clean Linen cocktail (which sadly is no longer on the menu, but we still ask for it!) or the Japanese cocktail--both are excellent--plus a sake bomb to kick things off. The Dancing Shrimp appetizer is an absolute must. It's so good that my partner and I used to share one, but now we each order our own because we just can't get enough. For entrées, our go-to favorites are the chicken katsu, unagi nigiri, salmon nigiri, maguro, hamachi, and a few of their specialty rolls. Everything is always fresh, flavorful, and consistently satisfying. Honestly, we never worry about the prices because we always leave full, happy, and already excited for our next visit. As for the ambiance, the high ceilings give it an almost old-church feel when you look up, which adds some unexpected charm. The servers are usually attentive and keep the night flowing smoothly, making the whole dining experience that much better. This place is a must try on Alvarado st.

Sashimi Platter and 2 Teka Maki Rolls
    Devin M.

10/10 Absolutely amazing sushi super fresh and easily my new favorite local spot! Let me start with the sashimi: all of it was a perfect 10/10. Every piece melted in my mouth, incredibly fresh with flawless cuts. I honestly couldn't even pick a favorite because they were all that good. The Tekka rolls were also excellent rolled perfectly with nothing falling apart, just fresh and flavorful in every bite. Hands down, the freshest sushi I've had locally, and I truly savored every bite. Service was fast and efficient. Our server was very attentive and made sure our waters were always filled, which I appreciated. The ambiance was nice too loved the venue, and the disco ball at the front was a fun touch. The only minor drawback was the seating layout, which felt a little too open, almost like people were watching us. But that's just nitpicking, because the sushi was the true highlight here. If you're in the area, this place is an absolute must-try!

Fish You Were Here A…read moreJapanese fusion fish-centric restaurant located in Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, it has had the same owners since 1975, when it was FKA "Shabu Shabu" before receiving its current moniker in 1993. The Good: * We loved the location--down a set of stairs into a dimly lit, cozy space. * And speaking of cozy spaces, we love that every table is its own private booth. Nothing is more annoying than having to dine with strangers just inches away, in my opinion. * Service was, uhhh, interesting but passable. We actually liked the dude who was following up behind our server, as he seemed like a really cool guy with definite opinions on the food. * Make sure you order their unique take on chips and salsa! Their fried wonton wrappers paired with a deliciously unique ginger pico de gallo were fantastic. * The Fried Fish Cakes (a daily special, so they might not always be on the menu) were delicious and full of flavor. * We both loved our entrées; my Black Bean Halibut was cooked perfectly--tender and flaky--and I loved the funky fermented black bean sauce. Carissa is still talking about her Almond Sea Bass weeks later, so 'nuff said. * The Warm Tempura Banana Sundae was a bit odd but worked in a weird way. We normally skip dessert unless it's something unique, and this certainly fit the bill! The Meh: * Reservations are handled the old-fashioned way: via telephone. * No outdoor dining. The Ugly: * While being underground is part of their charm, as mentioned above, it is definitely not ADA-compliant. So if you or anyone in your party has difficulty traversing stairs, this probably isn't the place for you. Conclusion: Fantastic date-night spot with great service, ambiance, and food. Highly recommended.

There's a nice outdoor bar area where you can get drinks and appetizers while waiting for your seat. Slow cooked pork belly : 20/10 must try! The crispy outside texture was perfect and the charcoal taste complemented the pork belly fat really well. Szechuan pork ribs: 7/10 Not bad, but the Szechuan flavor lacked and it tasted more like Sriracha. Half butterfish and half ahi tuna dish: 8/10 the sauces were PHENOMENAL!! I'm going to need to get their recipe for their fragrant herbaceous green sauce and the coconutty umami white sauce. On multiple occasions, we had to ask the busboy to send our waiter over because we were either out of soda, to take our appetizer order, or to find out where our drinks were at once we placed the order. When asking how much longer for our drinks, we were told by our waiter 'I put the order in. It should probably be ready now.' He was not friendly and was not what I expected at all of a Pebble Beach restaurant. We come somewhat often as we only live 30 minutes down the road so this visit definitely fell short. With our tip already being included in the final price, I feel as though the effort from our waiter was as if his service to our table didn't really matter as he was getting his tip either way. The restaurant was not very busy either so it just seemed like a lack of effort. I would like to recognize the busboy as he was extremely attentive and always made sure to clear our table timely. I feel as though he would make a better waiter than the individual we had. The food was subpar for a restaurant of this caliber. My bento box with butterfish came out cold. My mom & sister-in-law ordered the bento box with salmon and both mentioned how there was a lack of flavor. Overall, I think I would go to Sticks at Pebble Beach instead as we have always had great service there.

I usually only do positive reviews, but I had to share how put-off I was with my family's…read moreexperience here. When we originally walked in there were very few parties seated. We had a party of nine. Shortly after we were seated, a party of well-dressed ladies that the employees seemed to be familiar with, so I can only guess they were "regulars", arrived. When we first got there, it was fine, but once the other party arrived, we were completely cast aside. We ordered two cups of coffee that we observed an employee walk around with for 20 minutes, stopping to chat , before he plopped it down on a counter before our server brought it to our table. Needless to say, it was already cold. As far as other drinks, we didn't order any. We all drank water and we weren't offered a refill literally until the end when we were almost done with our meal. They were tending to the other party the entire time. When I saw that the other party received all their meals before we did - even though we were there, seated and ordered before they were, I stopped what I can only guess was the manager (dare I say an owner?) and said, "Excuse me sir, we got here before the other party and they've already gotten their food, and we're still waiting." His response was not, "I'm sorry it's taking so long. Let me check on it." Or "I know it's been a while, your food is coming right out." He actually said to me in an irritated tone, "Well because they got all fried food and you got all grilled!" And walked away. And here's the kicker - all our food wasn't grilled. Most of us ordered salads. Granted one had chicken and one had salmon, but who says this to a customer? I honestly wouldn't have cared so much about getting our food after the other party had he responded differently but for someone in the food service industry to treat a customer that way is just gross; for someone to run a business that way is just gross. I wanted to walk out of there without paying, because honestly, the food was gross and the service made it even worse. We got an order of egg rolls (that were all lumpia wrapper with no meat, by the way), my Caesar salad? Every piece of lettuce in my salad was the core, so I pretty much picked out the chicken, and to top it off we ordered clams, which wasn't even part of the delay because they forgot to include it in the order all together. Don't even get me started about how he couldn't answer the question about the menu. I'm Filipino, and that was an insult to Filipino food and to Filipino hospitality. I have so many family and friends in the food service industry and for this reason, I have never given less than 20% gratuity. I cringed doing that here, but I honestly wanted to leave nothing. That's how bad the taste Edwin's left in my mouth. Do better next time. No matter who enters your restaurant, treat all your customers with some warmth, no matter who they are, even if they aren't your regulars, don't make out-of-towners feel like you're doing THEM a favor by LETTING you feed them. Everyone who enters your doors helps keeps your doors open. They have a lot of restaurant choices in the area. Don't make them regret choosing yours.

Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to that excitement. After being seated with menus, we waited about 15 minutes without anyone checking in, offering water, or asking for a drink order. It honestly felt like we had walked into a private gathering, as staff were engaged in long conversations with other tables. Since we were already pretty hungry and hadn't even received water, we decided to leave, so I can't comment on the food itself. This is a bit of a late review, as the visit happened just shy of New Year's Eve. To be fair, they may have been understaffed or we came on an off day, but it was still disappointing. What I really appreciated was that it wasn't overly rich or heavy like a lot of creamy pasta dishes can be. It had so much flavor while still feeling balanced, and I found myself wanting more after every bite. Everything we tried was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and the service was wonderful. If you're thinking about coming here, definitely order the miso pasta

Very disappointing experience This was the first time I…read morehave ever had an experience where the owner had such a bad attitude, while the host/server acted more like the real owner of the restaurant. The host/server was the only good part of this experience. She was polite, respectful, helpful, and professional. It was a cold Sunday afternoon in Carmel, around 1:30 PM, with light rain outside. We asked to sit inside because it was too cold outside. There were three open seating options inside. One was right by the entrance, where it was still cold, and two others were farther inside near the kitchen, where it was warmer. I asked if we could sit at one of the warmer tables. The host/server was nice about it, but then the owner came over and said no, those tables were only for parties of four. I understand restaurant seating policies. I have worked in restaurants, managed restaurants, and trained people to be servers, so I understand that sometimes bigger tables need to be saved for larger parties. But this was Sunday 1:30 PM, after the lunch rush, and the restaurant was almost empty. There were only a couple of customers inside. In that situation, refusing to seat two customers at a warmer table felt unnecessary and showed very poor customer service. A few minutes later, the owner came over with attitude and asked if I had complained to her coworker. I told her I was not complaining. I simply asked if we could sit somewhere warmer. She kept repeating that it was her policy and those tables were for four people. Her tone was rude and unprofessional. Honestly, the best thing this restaurant has is that host/server. She should be the one training people there, not dealing with an owner who talks to customers like that. As for the food, we ordered calamari and coconut shrimp. The calamari was terrible. It tasted old, rubbery, and not fresh at all. I would not recommend ordering it. The coconut shrimp was okay, but nothing special. It was well done, but not tasty at all. It tasted more like breading than coconut or shrimp. I also posted a picture, so people do not think I am exaggerating. You can look at the photo and decide for yourself if it looks more like breading than actual coconut shrimp. If zero stars were an option, I would give zero for the owner's attitude and the overall experience. The only reason I am giving one star is because the host/server was very kind, polite, and professional.

We started with the Caprese salad, which was the perfect size for sharing between two people. To drink, I ordered a glass of Merlot while my partner enjoyed a sangria. The pours were generous and definitely appreciated! For our entrées, we ordered the shrimp Thai curry and the Gyro platter, both of which were flavorful, well-prepared, and satisfying. I debated a few dishes until the server let me know that the owner is from Thailand and this was her own recipe. It was amazing! The service was also exceptional throughout the entire course of the meal. We had several different team members checking on us, and each one was attentive, friendly, and made us feel well taken care of. Going back to the wine pours...we closed our tab but because of the holiday pour we stayed for another round of drinks for dessert! Unfortunately, we didn't have room or time for dessert ( because we had wine for dessert ;) , but after hearing great things about it, the key lime pie is already at the top of our list for next time. This place feels like a hidden gem, and if we find ourselves back in Carmel, we'll absolutely be returning.

Treehouse Café has the kind of cozy, tucked away charm that fits Carmel perfectly. The first thing they brought out was bread with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette and, no joke, that ended up being my favorite bite of the meal. I was still thinking about the bread while eating everything else, which probably says more than I intended. The clam chowder was good and comforting, but if you've had chowder in Monterey, you know the bar is pretty high. The calamari was the bigger disappointment. It was chewy instead of tender and didn't have that light, crispy crunch that makes calamari worth ordering in the first place. By the time we finished the chowder and calamari we were full, but we still looked through the menu to see if anything tempted us. Honestly, nothing really stood out. The pasta prices felt steep, and there wasn't a dish that made us say, "Okay, we have to come back and try that." The only thing that really took away from the experience was how close the tables were. I could hear the people next to us whispering and accidentally became invested in a conversation I was never invited to. Overall, it's a cute place with great service and a nice ambiance that's worth checking out if you're visiting Carmel. I don't regret going, but I also don't see myself going back. On the bright side, at least the bread gave me something to remember. Someone in that kitchen deserves a raise for that basket alone.
