Honestly I'm not a big time sushi guy nor am I a sushi connoisseur. But one day my buddy Darren N. asked me if I wanted to go to Kumo Sushi and I responded to him saying, "sure, I think I want to try something different and I never had sushi before". After returning to work with the sushi I ordered and taking the first bite it was surprising how much I actually liked sushi. After that experience I decided to put Kumo Sushi in my work time lunch rotation. I've ordered takeout from them plenty of times thereafter. However, I never really got the chance to experience the dine-in experience of Kumo Sushi because we would always do takeout and it was always packed during lunch. But today was different, simply because myself and a few colleagues wanted to celebrate a coworkers birthday so we left early to beat the lunch time rush and I was actually able to dine-in this time around. Once seated I found that for me Kumo Sushi seems to have a nice ambiance about it that I find pretty cool. Note: If you want to dine-in you will have to beat the lunch time rush crowd. In order to do that you will have to go to this restaurant before noon. Again I was absolutely pleased with the sushi that I ordered. I normally do the Kumo Sushi - Maki Lunch Special for about $9 which gets you two rolls (which they have a nice selection of sushi) and either soup or salad. Today I got the yellowtail & boston rolls with salad and I was 100% satisfied. One of my coworkers ordered something called a sexy jalapeno and he allowed me try one and I most definitely enjoyed that as well and wouldn't mind getting it again if/when I dine-in again. I mean overall I have no issues at all. The service was great, the sushi was great, and the atmosphere felt relaxing. If you are in the area and you like sushi I think you should give this place a try (this is coming from a guy who at one point thought it absolutely ridiculous to eat something wasn't cooked all the way). read more

I ordered a takeout for lobster hibachi and some sashimi. I asked for soy sauce and the waitress said it is inside the bag. However, when I arrived at my hotel the soy sauce is not inside the bag!! This is going to be bad.. having Kumo right in my neighborhood. Finally had a chance to try this place with my best friend for dinner and it did not disappoint! I'm forever craving sushi too. We ordered four special rolls to share: Tiffany's, Dancing Dragon, Butterfly, and Tiger's Eye. My best friend and I agreed the Butterfly was our favorite, it will definitely be one of my defaults if I cannot decide on a roll to order. The restaurant looks small on the outside, but it's nicely decorated and has a nice interior once you go in. I was also able to redeem points from Verizon Rewards for a 25% off coupon, not bad considering how fast your bill can stack up with special rolls. I have had a terrible experiences with sushi in the Northern Va but this place was a breath of fresh air. On my initial visit I ordered sushi off the menu with the exception of one roll, I asked for the chef special. The special was a work of art visually and one of the best rolls I have eaten to date. i strongly recommend ordering off the menu and allowing the chef to create, you will not regret it. Customer service has been consistently great but a bit much at times. Lastly, give dessert a try it will put a sweet ending to your "Kumo" experience. read more

Came here with some relatives today and I was pretty impressed. If you are expecting "authentic" Japanese sushi, this is not the place for you. Kumo is owned and operated by a Chinese family (from Fuzhou, to be exact), and therefore the cuisine is reflective more so of that area. The service here is extremely attentive, detail-oriented, and friendly. My relatives were close with the owners and their adorable daughter, so we shared many conversations with the managers, but I did observe them walking around to chat with other customers. My teacup was always filled and my dirty plates swapped out quickly. We also got wet napkins after eating a dish where we had to use our hands. Dining environment can be described as chic and modern, with not too much Asian influence. The bathroom is very clean as well. I will admit that it is a much cleaner establishment than other Asian restaurants or sushi joints I have been to. We started with the standard seaweed salad and spicy crab salad. The spicy crab salad was delicious, albeit a little too rich/creamy for my own taste. We also received a squid salad, compliments of the chef, which was delicious and had a refreshing vinaigrette sprinkled on top. Next, we had seafood udon and shrimp fried rice, both of which were just average and pretty standard of any Asian restaurant. We also had some sort of grilled fish cheek (I can't recall the name of the fish) that was extremely tender and paired with a very unique vinegar. The lobster entree they brought out next was DELICIOUS. The lobster was so well-prepared and the sauce wasn't too heavy. This entree is NOT on their menu, and was made special for us, which was so sweet of the chef. Next to sample was the Red Bull roll--shrimp tempura wrapped in rice & seaweed, topped with filet mignon and fish eggs. It's surrounded by more varieties of caviar and sauce, layered on a lime slice. Very unique and yummy. Finally, we ordered the sashimi for 2...their sashimi is not as fresh or generous as I have had from other places, so a little disappointed. The pièce de résistance, however, was the raw scallops sashimi... it is served on the shell. The pieces of scallop are extremely thin and layered on top of equally thin slices of lime. The scallops melt in your mouth and the sweetness of the meat is perfectly paired with the kick from the lime slice. I've never had anything like this, and would make the hour-drive from Maryland for this dish alone. Definitely a must try! You do have to call in advance for this dish. At the end, they gave us 2 huge platters of watermelon slices and cherries (very sweet!) in martini glasses. I was particularly impressed by how well displayed all of their dishes were... everything seemed to be decorated or presented in an aesthetically pleasing manner, complete with flashing lights, fans, and flowers. All in all, Kumo Sushi does a great job with presenting unique rolls and entrees and certainly does not disappoint with its service. Kumo probably deserves more of a 2.5-star rating, but I decided to go with 3 because the sushi itself was quite good. The menu is enormous, which the servers really need to keep in mind, at least when you know someone hasn't been there before (our server asked). She came over every 10 seconds asking if we were ready to order "yet." Clearly impatient. Not a good impression. Part of the reason it took me awhile to get through the menu is that almost everything on it has the word "spicy" in the description. I'm not a fan of spicy, so it took me quite some time to find options that were not spicy. It's not their fault that I don't do spicy, but I can't be the only one, so a little better balance might be in order. I can't remember exactly what I had; it was good, but it was also a couple bucks more per roll than I generally pay at my usual place. And you get only one piece in each nigiri order; most other places I've been give you two. So, between the higher prices and the lack of non-spicy options, I don't think I'll go back. But if you like spicy sushi, this place may be very much your cup of tea. read more

I really don't know how this place gets rave reviews...unless the yelpers that rated this place have never really experienced what real sushi and sashimi is... Tonight was my first time at Kumo and I decided to try this place out after reading the positive reviews on yelp. First impression of the place is that it's clean and servers are friendly. After sitting down, I was given 3 menus which took me almost 15 mins to pour through all the pages...I was quite confused with why they had so many menus. This place has a LOT of different specialties rolls options which can be a good thing. There were a lot of rolls with the typical ingredients like spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, imitation crab, softshell crab, etc. there were others that include things I'd never want in my sushi like papaya, mango, pork flakes, soy bean paper, kalbi ribs, duck...umm wth? Did they just decide to pile on all ingredients they can find in the kitchen onto sushi rice? It just seemed like this place is all over the map with a lack of focus on their menu. I ordered an off menu roll called "2013 roll" which was okay. It had baked scallop but it was pretty much cold when it got to the table. I also asked for the sushi/sashimi menu (the little sheet of paper that you can write down the items you want) and normally at a restaurant that's legitimately known for good quality sashimi they will give it to you automatically. I picked yellow tail, toro (fatty tuna), baby yellowtail, & white tuna. one thing to note, Toro is market price and for 2 piece, they charged $8. The meat texture of the fish was harder than most of the sashimi pieces I've tasted. Not sure why it didn't have the chewiness and buttery taste of the fresh sashimi I've had before. Delicious sushi spot in the area! The restaurant is bright, modern, and fairly spacious. I went in for lunch and service was quick and friendly despite a packed restaurant. I got the Chirashi lunch special with miso soup (or you can opt for a salad). $12 for 15 pieces - what a steal! The soup is subpar, but the fish was fresh and delicious and the portion was hearty. There are a number of other sushi, hibachi, and bento box lunch specials as well. Everything is very reasonably priced. This place is great, especially when you consider the physical location (upscale strip mall) and geographic location (Herndon, VA). The restaurant feels opulent, with nice colors, updated decor, and good lighting. About five different waitresses made me feel like my wish was their command - I had to wait about 30 seconds before I had chopsticks, a fork (since I refuse to learn how to use chopsticks), water, soda, and spring roll (which was on the house - so nice). I always appreciate when a sushi restaurant gets creative with the menu and can offer customers something more edgy than a spicy salmon roll. Off of a list of about 10 specialty rolls, I tried the Tomas roll, which was delicious. It was my first time ever trying a riceless roll and I would highly recommend. They also brought it out on a large plate with really nice presentation and LOTS of special sauce for dipping. I don't know about you, but where I'm from extra sauce = extra stars. I thought the prices were very good considering the quality of the service and food. This is my new favorite lunch place in Herndon and I'm looking forward to becoming a regular. read more

Feeling a rumbly, in my tumbly I conned a co worker into checking this place out for lunch with me earlier this week. I had heard good things from friends, and Yelp had tons of great reviews, so of course I had to check it out. Its a little busy during the work week at lunch, so try and get there early if you can. I ordered the Sushi lunch special. It came with a California roll, and 5 good size pieces of sashimi and a side salad. The side salad was the standard salad served at most sushi places, nothing to brag about, however the quality of the sashimi and the rolls was fantastic. The pieces were pretty big, and you can tell that they used better quality fish than most places. I also ordered a side dish of the eggplant with miso sauce. That dish was delish! It wasn't spicy at all. It had more of a sweet glaze over the perfectly cooked eggplant. I definitely want to order this dish again and again. Not sure how the place would be for a dinner date. Stopped by for a date night, nice little location, they have a wide variety of sushi without cream cheese which made me very happy. We started with the shu mai, not very flavorful but the sushi more than made up for it. We ordered three rolls, one of their specials (2013), beauty and the beast and dancing eel. Honestly all three were great, the beauty and the beast was our favorite, it was wrapped in something that looked like a thin egg roll, and the flavor diversity was well balanced, the dancing eel was a little bland compared to the other two rolls but all had great sauces. My only problem is that almost all of the rolls were too big for me and therefore had to be eaten in bites which takes away from the experience, next time I'll have to ask for smaller pieces. read more

They get four stars, and this is why: 1) affordable, 2) fast, 3) good service, 4) good location/ambience and 5) pretty solid sushi. 1) I had the 2 Rolls Maki Lunch. This includes soup (miso) or salad and comes in at $9.25. For this area...very affordable. 2) We went there for a quick team lunch for work. In and out within 40 minutes. 3) The waitress did not have a lot of the social niceties that some people expect, but let's be real...we're not at Bennigan's. She was nice enough, got all of orders right, kept my hot tea filled up, and was prompt with the check. 4) The location is nice. It's in a little shopping center that has an array of other lunch options. This is especially nice if you have a lot of finicky eaters that want to eat different things. 5) Solid sushi. I ordered the sweet potato roll and the avocado roll. The sweet potato roll was in fact tempura'd sweet potato and was really delicious. It tasted very fresh. The avocado was also really good. I said Jiro doesn't dream of this place solely because the sashimi that another person got did not look terribly fresh. Since moving to the DC Metro area, this is the closest I could find to good, fresh, experimental, sushi. I found that most DC/nova Japanese establishments gravitate toward the lowest common denominator sushi experience. This conception is not entirely true at Kumo. If you do your research, you will find that "traditional sushi" doesn't really exist in the US. Here, it's a fusion dish no matter how you spin it, so authenticity means nothing to me. With that said, I rate sushi restaurants by freshness, preparation, presentation, service, value (who gives me the most maki for my money), and uniqueness/experimentation. Kumo's staff has always been warm and welcoming. I've never ordered a bad roll and even have a few favorites: Simkin's, Incredible Huck (sic), Mermaid, and Angry Dragon just to name a few. The portions are reasonable and filling, and the presentation is always fun. However it might be worth 5 stars with a few more embellishments and attention to detail. For example, Kumo: *Those hand towellets you give us before we dine are supposed to be heated! :) *Experiment more! There is a reason why we order Jalapenos in our Miso; it is because "spicy miso" is AWESOME. Why not put it on the menu? Don't like that? How about some more twists on old favorites? *While the value is still pretty good, putting some "chef's special rolls" on the menu at a discount might encourage people to open up their minds and their wallets just a little more. Very disappointing experience. I travel a lot for work, to many different places. Each time I go somewhere, I always open up Yelp to find the highest-rated, nearby, 2-dollar ($$) sushi restaurant. I always find amazing stuff. This was the first time I got disappointed. I arrived at about 6:50 PM on a Tuesday, the place wasn't looking busy - maybe less than half the tables were occupied. I ordered a salmon skin hand roll, a Hamachi hand roll and 2 Toro Nigiri to start. Later I also ordered one of their special rolls. After about 20 minutes waiting, I see the first hand roll ready on the sushi bar. It sat there for about 15 more minutes, when the second one joined the first one in the plate, still in the sushi bar. Five more minutes, a server brings the two hand rolls. As anybody would expect, the Nori wasn't good anymore, wasn't crunchy. Had to destroy the handroll to get rid of it and be capable of eating the contents. The Toro Nigiri was bad. The texture felt like it was a very old piece of Toro that they didn't store properly. Finally, the special roll - it was dull. Nothing special about it. It ended up being pretty expensive (45 usd, no drinks) for a very disappointing diner. Mental note to myself: don't come back! read more

I'm a self proclaimed sushi snob, having had mind blowing sushi in Hawaii (and Vegas and Cali), so my sushi standards are high. But this visit tonight will be my last. There were only 4 people here tonight when my friend and I walked in. The servers took forever to stop at our table, and when they did, they weren't even friendly. Went there with friends on the last Saturday in June. This is a place where quantity and gaudiness trump qaulity and beautity. I ordered shimp and vegetable tempura. The shrimp were not fresh. When I picked them up with chopsticks, half of them just broke into pieces. The vegetables were coated with heavy batter and deep-fried for ages. I felt queasy soon after the dinner. One of my friends ordered sushi deluxe. The showy piece features a Chinese style wooden fan in additon to some dry ice cloud, etc. Wonder how long have they been reusing the fan, or whether they ever wash it. While we were there, three kids from owner's family were sitting at the bar eating dinner and play computer games. The owner - the guy who was in pink tee shirt - walked around serving customers while chewing his own dinner. This place is great! Some of the best sushi I've had in the area, and definitely the best Sushi I've had in Herndon. The presentation was wonderful, the sushi was fresh (best Salmon Sashimi I've ever had) and the special rolls were good sized. My only gripe, which is not worth taking a star off for, was that there seemed to be like half a dozen different sushi menus. We seriously had no less than 4 different sushi menus spread out over the table. I applaud them on their diversity and having the widest selection of special rolls ive ever seen... but it was confusing when the waitress was suggesting rolls and they werent on the menu we had; which resulted in yet another menu being thrown into the pile with even more selections. The menu is massive and impressive, and I can't wait to go back again to try something else! This time around I had Hibachi Tofu, which came with Miso Soup and salad, as well as fried rice. The tofu was perfect, which is not something I say lightly. Cripsy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a tasty sauce covering it. Finally...a decent sushi place in Herndon!!! YAY!!! I have been here twice for dinner with the family and both times, the fish was fresh and delicious. I usually opt for sashimi as that is the tell all of a place and their food. Whether it was yellow tail, toro or uni, it was good. My kids love tonkatsu and they cooked there's perfectly...not overcooked where the meat dry's out. There are some nice options there for rolls and other types of Japanese style cuisine. The place is Chinese owned and they provide really good service. We are fans as this place serves better sushi than 90% of the places in Nova and the service is good. Kumo has become a staple dinner option. The location is convenient, pricing is reasonable and the staff is friendly. The restaurant seems very clean and if you come in often enough, the staff will recognize you. Oh yeah, and the quality/taste of their sushi is always consistently great. Also, free items come with minimum $ orders (steamed edamame, assorted rolls, etc.) My only suggestion is to reduce the amount of sushi options you offer because the menus can get a little overwhelming read more

Fair pricing for the sushi I will say that considering the area and ambiance of the place. I have been here 3 times as I enjoy the food. I come back for the food. It's the staff that is not so friendly & dry really. It's not they are flat out rude, but they lack many customer services skills in terms of being pleasant, smiling at customers or just being friendly. The sushi bar staff is much more friendly then the ladies at the door and serving. I will say they do their job and they do wait on you appropriately, but an occasional smile or friendly gestures makes all the difference in the world to a customer. Superb sushi place. I don't get out to Herndon much, but was happy when I stumbled into this modern shopping area and found Kumo Sushi. Out of the 5 rolls my group ordered, only 1 wasn't to my liking (spicy tuna wrapped in cucumber. It tasted like they pureed the tuna, and if that's normal, it just isn't for me. The texture was no bueno). However the other rolls were VERY well done. I recommend the Dynamite Roll as my favorite (on the Special Menu), with a close second being the Sweet Heart roll (on the normal menu). The presentation is also very different. They served our first three rolls on a plate with a glowing ball and some sort of rice noodle over top. Good work on keeping things interesting! I was a little miffed that even though they had sushi rolls with crab in them, they couldn't substitute in real crab in the fake crab rolls (e.g. California Roll) - even for a surcharge this should really be an option. Also humorous was the King Crab Roll that came with, you guessed it, Snow Crab. Huh? Still, it was tasty :) We finished our meals with Tempura and Mochi green tea ice cream. IT was delicious, and both types were very good. I'd recommend the Mochi as it's basically the same thing just not fried. Good way to be a bit healthier. The inside has a 70s/80s feel with the orange chairs, but the place seemed quite clean and the upholstery seemed almost new - great condition. The other weird thing about my experience is we had 2 waitresses. The english wasn't great, which is fine, but it was even more difficult that they didnt seem to compare notes. One would come, we'd order a couple rolls, then the other would come and ask if we decided on out selections. Then we had to explain we already ordered. That happened three times. Yeesh! Super fresh and delicious sushi! We sat at the sushi bar and were offered a complimentary order of white-fish tempura (which was ample in size and absolutely delicious!) The miso soup was nothing special, and I didn't even finish it (a first for me - seemed to lack depth and flavor). Definitely a "pass" in the future for me. The roll menu is...extensive, to say the very least. In fact, it's nearly overwhelming! I loved the Hot Girls roll I ordered, but it needed a bit of sriracha, IMO. So I kindly asked for a quick dab on top of my roll. I received the expected look of horror, eye roll and subsequent chattering about in Japanese...but my oh my,it was worth it. Took my good roll to great. 4.5 stars overall. I've ordered the lunch bento box for takeout a year ago and loved it. Today I had the chance to dine in and check this place out completely. If you plan to dine-in around lunch time, come in around 11:30/45 am--the establishment gets packed...FAST We were greeted and led to our table by a very friendly host. Our server came by and took our drink orders while we were still attempting to sit down completely--this is where the -.5 stars comes in. While we waited for our fifth guest to arrive, a few people asked questions about the menu. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, but seemed pushy. I tried to ignore it. I decided to order two sushi rolls, which also came with a choice of salad or miso soup. Of course I went with yummy miso soup. About 15 minutes later, all of our meals arrived. Once our meals were placed at our table, I felt like we were pressured to leave as soon as possible. I understand it's lunch, but I'm a paying customer and I don't appreciate being pushed out of a door just in order to accommodate a new guest/party. I completely understand if there was a time limit stated somewhere in the store. I could also understand if we were overstaying our welcome, but we were only sitting for 45 minutes--15-20 of which consisted of us waiting for food or taking orders. All in all, this place is great. Again, the [half] star loss is due to feeling pressured to end my meal quickly. I've been here a dozen times for dinner and lunch. Lunch prices are ok. A lot of their specialty rolls for dinner are extremely overpriced. The prices are a little above average. Their selection of sashimi and their "special rolls" take up at least 3 pages. It's not the best in the area but it'll do in a pinch. The service is very quick. Takeout ordering is available online. If you dine in and receive their decorative plates they'll take up your whole table. Don't order any soda. It's ALWAYS flat. Parking under the Harris Teeter lot may be a better alternative to trying to find a spot above ground. read more
