Rob has outstanding customer service, and it made my experience all the more enjoyable. He was sincere and detailed about his findings and recommendations, so I didn't feel like I was getting swindled or misled like I have been before. I've also found many mechanics to be condescending when they discuss issues and pricing, but Rob was very upfront and transparent about everything. Even pleasant chatting on the phone or in the office after the work was done--Rob is a stand-up guy! I went in initially to have my battery checked, figuring it'd have to be replaced. Rob quoted me cheaper than AAA, which also saved me having to wait 2 hours for a driver to see me. My car was also due for a 90,000 mile check, so I wasn't surprised when he brought that up on the phone. Before touching anything outside of the battery though, he told me about my fan belt that was cracking. Midas never mentioned that, and it could have left me stranded on the highway like a poor schmuck had I not done anything about. This feels like a true neighborhood auto shop, where you call up your trusted mechanic to look into a funny sound you heard on the road. After a bad experience at a neighboring shop (see my other reviews if interested), I walked into Kunio's without calling first, and hoped they could do the work. I had 2 brake drums already off the vehicle that I needed machined. I talked to Rob, and he was able to help me out. He gave me a nice fair price, and got both drums done the same day. Rob was courteous and respectful to me and his neighbors, a good guy, and a job well done. Even though it wasn't the biggest of jobs, it was still handled as a priority, and I wasn't made to feel as if I was a nuisance for not calling first. I left there a happy customer. Based upon our experiences with Kunio's Auto Repair, we are also skeptical of the 1 star review; it just doesn't fit logically. We have been limited customers of Kunio's for about 6 years and have taken 2 different cars to him: 1994 Infiniti Q45t and a 2009 Camry Hybrid. Perhaps 8 visits in total. Kunio and his son, Rob, are very easy going, affable people. More importantly they are bright, technically literate mechanics with years of experience. They know what they know and they admit what they don't know. They know Japanese vehicles the best and will turn away/refer the business of German car owners. The shop is immaculate and well maintained. Their equipment is the same. I find their prices to be very competitive and that equals fair. I try to avoid giving 1 star and/or 5 star ratings - though I've done so in the past - because seldom is anything the absolute worst or best. Regarding Kunio's I cannot think of a reason to deduct 1 star. . . . OK, 1/2 star off for the crazy parking. How's that? :-) read more

We trust Kunio and Robb with our cars! We started at Kunio's more than 20 years ago, after my parents had been going to Kunio's for years before that. They have diagnosed and repaired many problems, big and small, on our Toyotas. We have old cars and a tight budget, and Kunio works hard to keep costs reasonable, including advising us on the minimum amount of work to get the job done (or what we could do if we want to spend more money.) DO NOT BE FOOLED BY 5 STAR REVIEWS and DO NOT go to this place if you are new to the area or taking it there for the first time. The owner made it seem like it was a problem I hadn't taken my car there before because he didn't know what my car had been through even though I gave him the information. HE CHARGED ME $378.00 TO PUT SPARK PLUGS IN MY CAR AND INSTALL A BATTERY I GAVE TO HIM. Backstory: After telling me he could not work on my car unless it had a working battery I brought a brand new battery to him to install. He said he was going to run a diagnostic and see what was the problem. His employee called me the next day and said he thought it MIGHT be the spark plugs. An hour later he confirms it is indeed the spark plugs and my car was ready to go and to pick it up early because they were closing 2.5 hours before closing time. He said $155.00 of it was for the diagnostic. But if he ran the diagnostic why would his employee tell me he THOUGHT it was the spark plugs? Also, I thought it was common courtesy to not charge for the diagnostic if you get the work done at the business. THIS PLACE IS A RIP OFF. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

One of our neighbors recommended this shop a couple of months ago. I remembered that when I decided to have my brakes replaced and a/c fixed on my car. The dealers in Pleasanton and Concord have both demonstrated less than ethical behavior so I wanted a good alternative. This proved to be an excellent choice! Fast and friendly family run garage. Located behind Big O Tires on Contra Costa in Pleasant Hill. I'm back on the road having paid about half of what the dealer would have charged me. By the way, tires are next on my list and he strongly recommended getting Michelin or Goodyear tires from Costco and let me know that they have coupons available for these almost every week. We were shocked to see the unfavorable review written on 4/9/11 regarding Kunios Automotive. The writer must have gotten his mechanics confused or he is a competitor trying to get more business for himself. Kunio (and now his son) have worked on every car we've owned since shortly after we moved to Walnut Creek 23 years ago. Coincidentally, it turned out that Kunio's brother was our trusted mechanic for years when we lived in El Cerrito. Kunio has also worked on two cars our son owned, our daughter's car and friends whom we have sent to him, all of whom have been highly satisfied. Kunio has also given us advice on the telephone and he has saved us money numerous times. When I picked up the car after the work was done, there were no hidden surprises or charges tacked-on. Those are common tricks that many other shops, especially "corporate-chain" auto shops, do to stick it to you and make more money. Kunio's is a very nice place, Rob is very polite as other reviewers have noted...however... I brought my Chevy Cobalt in for a 60,000 mile service. Here's the result: 1. I had to come back 4 times before the work was finally complete. The first return was because, and I quote,"I received the wrong transmission fluid and put in in before I realized...". While I was glad he phoned me to tell me this, I still had to come in on the weekend to have the correct fluid put in. That was the second time I had to return, but in the meantime... 2. For the first time, I was told I needed new front brakes (which I believe was true), and that the tires needed rotating. I then spent an hour going to 4 different auto parts store before I found and bought the special tool needed to remove my lug nuts. At the time Rob told me that he asked the tire store next store if they had the tool and they told him no. When I checked with them, however, they told me that had a few of the tools. If Kunio's has rotated tires in the past, is it reasonable to think my wheels were the first with locks they have ever encountered? I found the tool and they were able to complete the work. Why didn't they have the right tool for the right job? I had to drive around and find the tool myself?... 3. Astonishingly, Rob was unable to figure out how to reset the "oil remaining" indicator, and although he thought he had done it, I had to reset it myself the next day. Was mine the first vehicle they have ever done an oil change on? It seems so...but I'm glad he threw in the paper telling me how to do it. 4. After having the front brakes replaced (see #2), I stil have a "shuddering" in the front end that wasn't there before. I'll have it checked somewhere else at my expense. When I spoke to Kunio about this, he said it might be the rear brakes and I should bring the car in to have them checked. The thing is, they said they checked the rear brakes during the service and they were not needing work. I declined the invitation to come back (for time #5) since my confidence is pretty low concerning them. 5, Yes, they did knock off some $$ for the 4 times I had to return to the shop, but it turns out that a complete 60,000 mile service wasn't done. A lot of money for fluid chances, spark plugs and brakes. A lot of money... 6. I asked if Rob would check the actual pressure in the air conditioner, and the reply was, "it's blowing cold". Not what I asked for, which was for a check of the coolent pressure. I'll get it checked somewhere else. Take your vehicle here if you must, but be aware that, if they can't even reset the oil usage indicator, and put in the wrong fluids, that could be trouble for your car. I have used Kunio to repair my cars for over 20 years. I recommend all of my friends to him. Everyone that I refer LOVES him. He is THE MOST honest mechanic in the world! I am shocked at the one star review. I doubt seriously that it is a real review. Anyone that has used Kunio would know that this description does not even fit him. You can feel completely at ease when you take your vehicle to him. He has worked on our BMW's, Honda and others. I wish there were more like him!!! read more

I landed up at Kunio's with my 11-year-old Subaru when it died on me in Pleasant Hill while I was on my way home from work. Robert and Kunio were both great with me, broke the bad news ever so gently that it had a blown head gasket and while it could be fixed if I wanted to throw several thousand dollars into an aging car, they didn't recommend that course of action! I agreed and went and got a new car, and while it was sad to give up my trusty old Subie I appreciated their honest appraisal. Wow. I've never had such a prompt, attentive, and wonderful auto repair service. Granted, my problem was relatively simple - the plastic shield under my car broke. Robert fixed it with a simple pin and told me if it doesn't hold, just come back and they'll help me out. And that's it! I was on my way. I'm very glad I came here, this will probably be my go-to auto repair if anything happens with my car. I used to take our car to the dealership but when they told me they had no openings for 9 days, that was the last straw. No more dealership. I called Rob at Kunio's and he is such a nice man. Told me up front that he was short one man and probably could not repair my car that day but would have a chance to see what was wrong. He called the end of the day and told us what was going on and said it would be repaired the next day. Our car runs perfectly and he said to drop by anytime to have the oil checked, lights replaced, air put in tires, etc. they have no courtesy driver but he said when they have time they drive their customers. All in all, I would rather have great service than a driver always available. We are very impressed and happy with Kunio's. read more

We have taken all of our cars to Kunio's for about 15 years. Wonderful service. Only one time have they not been able to fix it (electrical problem). They frankly explained how much time they put in to chasing down the problem. And that further work on their part would not likely produce better results. We of course paid them for their time and effort. I am concerned that the previous reviewer feels that someone should not be paid for work done. When you bring a car in with a problem, there could be multiple reasons as to why. Two years ago another shop told me I had $1,200 of needed front end repair. Kunio looked at it and said it was in good shape but all of my belts were in poor condition. They had a lot of miles on them and I was glad to get new ones. Last week I took the same car into him, a 1998 Q45t. He diagnosed the oil leak as minor and checked out the entire front end for $71 in labor. Very honest, very thorough. I remain a happy customer. read more
