This was the worst thing that ever happened to a house that I lived in. It happened in March it was completed in August. There's extensive mold damage on water damage due to a pipe that broke in the kitchen. My insurance adjuster recommended custom restoration. Have never dealt with any companies like this in the past but my neighbor use them and was very happy with their results. There was extensive way due to supply chain issues. Just had to pay my deductible that's it. Very happy with the work that was done their true professionals. They did not try to upsell me anything or make things more expensive which I appreciate. My house flooded a few months ago and I called Kustom US. At first they were great. They showed up quickly, got the demo done and had fans drying my house. But when I hired them to do the remodel, the job went south very quickly. I am very unhappy with the work this company did. On day 1, they broke a pot that had a plant in it and didn't tell me. They hid the plant in a random bucket and I had to be the one to get them to replace the broken pot, which didn't happen until the last day of this 2 month ordeal. They used the toilet at my house, which was in my bedroom, and didn't flush. When I was home, a worker said some very inappropriate things to me like "cock and fuck" and "this insurance work is such easy money." Which made a job I already felt uneasy about, more unsettling. They left dings in the walls and spaces between the baseboards and flooring. The baseboards are not the same shiny white they used to be, they're dull and look dirty which makes me think they were only primed. There was sticky dirt left on almost every other panel of the new flooring that I have to use goo-gone to get off. They re-installed my toilet, stove and dishwasher side-ways and the sink in my guest room only dispenses hot water now. They used my couch that I had placed outside as their own personal work station. I came home to stacks of wood and tools on the couch. Some of this was fixed and taken care of but I had to ask over and over again. I am not a confrontational person but there were times where I had to fight with my project director for the sake of getting my house back to what is was. Overall I would not recommend this company and wish I would have used someone else. read more

Adam Adam Adam horrible horrible customer service. Called this morning to speak to someone for some follow up on work being done in my apartment. Adam got on the phone said they send email updates daily my manger said they go to corporate not her. Adam let me know it's not his job or responsibility to keep me updated or to even tell me anything! I also reported one of his staff had a horrible odor that made me leave my apartment until he left my residence as it was all encompassing I had to turn the heater off open all the windows and doors and light candles. He said I was wrong he sees everyone in the morning and never has had a complaint like this so it couldn't have happened. Yet I was there and he wasn't. This was 2 guys I never met they started the work in my bathroom never got their names no name badges on clothes just 2 dudes standing at my door. Everyday is a surprise of when someone will knock and when they will show up it was also a surprise they would be shutting my water off nobody told me so you can imagine my surprise Unfortunately the property manager is only here 2 days per week I let Adam know this and I also let him know since I'm living here it would be great if I was kept in the loop however Adam's attitude was it's none of my bussiness and it's not his job to tell me or keep me in any loop and it's not their "policy"to tell anyone but the manager/landlord basically to bad so sad for me. My apartments is owned by a corporation not a mom and pop. I'm currently living in this construction zone! You would think Adam would have had more respect and compassion for my current situation! My bathroom is split into 3 sections each with its own containment section driving me and my dog insane but we are rolling with it but having a team that is honest and keep you informed is pretty important. In the bathroom the window was sealed with plastic but the workers didn't close the window so the entire time it rained ect the window was wide open yet completely sealed with plastic so I couldn't close it. This is the 2nd time I've had work done in my unit last time it took 6 months this time we are about 2 weeks in! The 2 guys "Richie" "Cruz" that did my kitchen were respectful and took care of my belongs like they belonged to them! The kitchen came out beautiful! The workers really stepped up to the plate when these guys worked I had updates only from them when I asked which was much appreciate. I'm not only living in this construction zone but I'm also building my day around the workers My leg was also sliced open by the kitchen sink which was left in the middle of my kitchen. I loved paying those co pays to have it looked at and a tetanus shot. I Don't BLAME MY KITCHEN GUYS they did the best they could with what room they had. HUGE THANKS TO NEAL,CRUZ,RICHIE AND EDDIE. I had mold remediation done to my condo in September 2025. George Hicks did an excellent job with getting rid of dangerous mold that was located in the walls of 4 rooms of my home (mold that was not visible on the surface of the walls). George was very professional and went above and beyond in making me feel comfortable with the process. He also worked on an emergency that happened in my home due to water damage caused by my upstairs neighbor while I was waiting on my restoration to begin. George came to my home quickly and remediated the water damage by placing several fans to dry out my open walls. Update: tile guy showed up to start shower tile and said he couldn't start because there was no sheetrock up and the studs and electric were t moved for the niche. How does this even happen?? I felt bad for the tile guy...what a waste of his time. DON'T DO IT. We chose Five Star because it was the preferred company by our insurance company when we had a leak in our shower. Because insurance made us remove all materials that were part of the shower across the whole bathroom, we pretty much ended up needed to gut the whole bathroom. This happened in early November 2021 and it is now mid April 2022 with no end in sight. The communication is non existent and I am literally babysitting the process. For example, I just texted our "project manager" (in quotes for a reason) and asked why no work had been done today because I was told that countertops, sinks, and faucets were going in today. She didn't know. In fact, the last text I had from her was yesterday saying that everything is going smoothly! How about that! Now there will be probably another week or two until one thing goes in, then another week or two to put in one more thing, etc. Another example of the horror we are encountering is one time, the estimator came over to check out the demo and when I opened the door I was like, "uhhh hi?" Because we had nothing scheduled for that day...he said, "I'm here to check out the demo." I said, "uhhhh nothing has been touched and no one has been here for three weeks....nothing is demoed..." They're about 50% more expensive than other vendors and with the s**t customer service and communication, I wouldn't even try them out. If your insurance company says Five Star is your preferred vendor, just take the payout and use someone else. Don't let Five Star tell you it's all related to supply chain issues, etc. Not true. We've have two others look at our project since and they've both said they could have gotten the stuff and finished it months ago. Hoping someone from Five Star sees this and gets the show on the road. Next step is demanding the insurance money back and we'll have someone else finish up the job. First thing they won't work with you're insurance so if you want to pay a ton in excessive claims this is your company. While our insurance company tried to work with this company they called every day literally threatening to send us to collection- threatening customers. We have good credit, pay our bills every month on time and never been treated like this by any company. We had this company come out due to water damage and we of course wanted them to check with our insurance company before doing any work to get the clear and they said it will be ok they will take care of that later. Due to this stress of the situation you just want the work to start and they are shoving contracts in your face while water is still in your house is kind unethical in my opinion, especially when you asked I would like to talk to the adjuster first and they continue to say " there no time for that you must sign and start the work". He had to take apart my bed everyday and move the furniture around the access the affected part of my ceiling. Im appalled at how this company treats its customers. Absolutely ZERO communication when an issue arises. I left out of my previous review that the electric company that they contracted to do work on our home turned off our solar panels AND NEVER TURNED THEM BACK ON! Which left us with a $5704 bill. Initially the company told me to submit my charges to MY insurance company! Are you kidding me? So you're asking me to submit a claim for an error on behalf of your contractor-FRAUD. It has been just over 6 weeks since they told us we would be reimbursed for this-and not one dollar has been reimbursed. I have called, texted and emailed multiple times with the response "let me get an update" "no updates currently" continually. I was then directed to David Chalupka for an "update". Called, left message with the secretary. And also no return call has been yet. Kustom/Five Star provided professional, competent, and quality service in cleaning up and rebuilding after a leak and mold incident. Mitigation manager Adam Wells and estimator Haleigh Taber especially deserve kudos. They were communicative and informative every step of the way about how the process worked. Kustom was proactive and professional in anticipating what problems might arise. Equally important, they were very ethical. Kustom is one of a number of companies that have been vetted by insurance companies to do work on properties damaged by covered claims, and our insurer specifically told us the reason it dealt with Kustom was because the company did things right. When this insurer midway through the restoration process tried to backtrack on coverage and demanded that everyone from the customer to the contractors revise their claims and professional assessments accordingly, Kustom did not take the easy route out. Kustom stuck to its professional assessment despite months of mounting pressure. It was beyond admirable. We had an unfortunate leak in our attic that damaged our ceiling. We called Five Star (also known as Kustom) based on good reviews. They came out, took some scans and called a third party contractor to do asbestos testing. After over a month and no movement towards mitigation and reconstruction and receiving either no callbacks from our frequent calls (the project manager Mike was always out of the office) or a run around, we wondered how low on their priority list we were. Finally, we notified our insurance company of the delays and they recommended a different company which we switched to and has since completed all the repairs. 6 months later, "Five Star" is sending us an invoice for over $1200 for what they only call "mitigation". We had already spoken to them to pursue their money through our home insurance months ago. I could not recommend this company to do more than send an exorbitant invoice. 3/10/24 As an update: We discovered Five Star wasn't even sending the billing to the right place for six months. I feel let down in every phase, from their lack of timely follow up with insurance approvals (the project manager for the company we hired got on the phone with insurance immediately), never even meeting the phantom project manager, Mike, to the poor handling of the billing process. read more

Dante's Inferno describes 7 levels of hell. He could have written more if he had worked with 5 Star, now Kustom Fairfield. From beginning to end, this project was characterized by lazy, non communicative project managers, who often failed to plan even one day ahead. At one point, our project manager disappeared for 10 weeks, not answering any messages. Getting the insurance estimate prepared and approved took 4 months, even though the insurance company was very responsive. Even when approved, nothing happened for 3 weeks. Floor removal involved 2.5 weeks of rotohammering, 8 hours a day. Demolition started quickly, but the manager showed up asking for payment without ever checking to see if the work had been finished (it had not). Their subcontractors were poor. The floor company sent, I believe, an uninsured worker, who started grinding the concrete slab with no dust control. He got floor glue on the wall and front patio. His saw blade was so dull that the house smelled like burned wood for two days. The granite store was also poorly chosen. It turns out they sell very little granite, and are unable to display two slabs at a time. Our granite was shipped there, but then had to be reshipped to a competent fabricator. All in all, nine months were required to do this project, which would have taken a competent company 4 to 6 weeks. read more

We met with Chris the supervisor and walked us through the process and introduced us to Nate our project manager. Nate and his crews were very polite, professional, and courteous. The work done was amazing considering what we started with vs. what we ended up with. My only critique was the length of time it took from start to finish, but seeing how there's a pandemic going on its definitely not a huge deal. After being out of warranty almost a year Five Star graciously returned and repainted our lower kitchen cabinet doors that were experiencing some chipping from our not using the cabinet handles to open and close the doors. They relocated the handles higher up to the top of the doors, patched and sanded the old holes, and put on new paint. They also covered the cost to repair one of the screen doors on a pair of large sliding glass patio doors that got damaged during the original installation and never worked quite right. I had a leak from my upstairs bathroom that manifested itself in the ceiling of the family room. Mercury Insurance called 5 Star and they came out to mitigate the damage. After all was said and done in my closet and family room and the guy came to remove their equipment, I noticed a couple of days later that my S&W 6906 9mm Semi Auto was missing. It was in my closet in a suede pistol case. The case is still here, gun still missing. Do I think they took it? All I know is when he left my gun left! Five Star Restoration performed the emergency services after we had a house fire. We worked with a lot of people during this difficult process, but our primary point of contact was Ron Hicks. From day one, he provided us with a very caring attitude and he was clearly experienced in overseeing the many, many tasks and challenges of clean up, tearing down of walls to prevent mold, having temporary fencing installed, packing all of our home contents, etc., etc., etc. He always assured us it was okay to call anytime. One time we had a question and, although he was at one of his kid's games, he answered our call and got us the information we needed within 10 minutes. My husband remembered that, the night of the fire, Ron was able to help him calm down. We also worked with the office personnel and I always had pleasant and prompt help. Every person we worked with assured us that their helping us was their priority - and they certainly made us feel we were not just a number. When we were actively looking for temporary housing, they were helpful in keeping their eyes open for potential rental vacancies: This was above and beyond their scope of responsibilities. This 2 star rate is not for their actual work on our house. It is a rate for their bad pre-sale customer service. Our bathroom floor was damaged due to toilet leaking problem. We need to get floor restored first. We searched on yelp and contacted couple companies for inspection at beginning of Feb. Five Star Restoration responded quickly and said they could do the inspection sooner. We decided to go with them even they charge higher inspection fee ($250). Their technician came a week later and inspected the damage. He said he would write report and send us estimation soon. But then we started a waiting in dark period. We called them several times for our report and estimation. After almost two weeks, we finally got the report and surprised by the estimation of $4800+. With that, we had to go through insurance claim. The estimation from our insurance inspection report was much lower (less than 1/3 of Five Star Restoration's). We contacted Five Star Restoration again, and asked their project manage to call back for discussion. But we never heard from them. We paid $250 and got no where after more than one month. It is said that some contractors reject a customer by over estimate potential cost. I am not sure if we were in such a situation. As a customer, I would rather be told directly that my project is too small (or you are too busy) to take. In that way I can save my time, and get my real problem fix earlier. We ended up going through another round search for contractors, and have our floor restoration done in reasonable price. read more

Professional, courteous, knowledgeable, skilled, thorough, thoughtful, considerate, and friendly to boot, he helped set our minds at ease instantly. He correctly and quickly diagnosed the problem and set up the equipment needed for full mitigation. A week later, Bobby came out to check to see if the issue had been rectified, which it had. He, too, is a peach. All the folks in the office with whom we had phone contact were terrific, also. I was on the phone with them at 930 at night and they were willing to come out right away. I was impressed every step of the way. We had a water leak and damage from our master bath through the ceiling into our family room. They identified the affected area, dried it all out and basically took care of it all. The technicians that were in our home were polite and thorough. I was so impressed I was extremely comfortable letting them come and go even if I weren't home. When I first noticed the leak I thought this process was going to be a nightmare. Instead- Nate and his crew made it easy. I hope to never need their services again but if I do I know who to call. They were recommended by the insurance. The mitigation went quick and smooth bc it was subcontracted out. The office and estimator were professional but almost as soon as I signed the contract for repairs lies began and then the project kept being stalled by them. After the insurance placed some pressure, they quit. Although they had ALREADY received payment for the permit, they tried to cancel it and get a refund. It wasn't until the CSLB was contacted that they released the permit stalling the project for 3 more weeks. Whatever you do, DO NOT use this company. Initially they'll impress you but it's part of the act. Then they'll just lie, lie and lie some more. Lies and being untruthful seem to be how they do business. 3.5 months later the project still hasn't been completed and if they had told me they wouldn't start initially or disappear I wouldn't have had the demo done so soon. Just avoid! Five star should be called one star and as I started getting new bids from contractors this seems to be their reputation on the street. read more
