Upscale sushi restaurant. A little pricier than I expected at nearly $100 for two people. Good ambiance. They had current day music playing which took away from the overall experience. Traditional Japanese music would be more appropriate. FYI, There is a authentic style Japanese dining room that you can reserve for larger groups but you must spend a minimum of $1k on menu items to reserve the room. However, the experience just might be worth the price...remove shoes, sit on floor cushions, low-lying table and sliding doors, along with a Michelin star chef who prepares a tasting menu of sushi and sashimi. In the main dining area you can order single stand alone sushi, sashimi and hand roll items. I ordered the Mexican roll and crunchy onion roll. Both were amazing, fresh, and artfully plated. They also have a wide variety of Sake and cocktails. For dessert I ordered the matcha creme brûlée with fresh strawberries on top. It was to die for...I wanted to lick the bowl because it was so good! Wait staff service was a little slow. My spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer came just minutes before my main course items. So it felt like my appetizer was part of the main meal. But the staff was knowledgeable and attentive so I really can't complain. Lots of seating available when we walked in around 7pm. Lots of parking available and it was nice to have dedicated parking spots for the restaurant. Host and servers were friendly. Once seated, we noticed our waitress was pretty attentive to her regulars but didn't check on us much throughout our meal, which was disappointing. As for the food, I had high hopes, but the pressed salmon was a letdown. It was a really thin slice of salmon, and they went overboard with the lemon....way too sour. The surf and turf roll? Not worth the $36, honestly. It just didn't stand out. The highlight of the meal was definitely the Shrimp Lover roll. I should've stuck with that from the start. The ambiance was also a bit off. The restaurant gives off a vibe that calls for something a bit more polished, but a lot of people were dressed super casually, in sweats, hoodies, and Birkenstocks. This is one of our favorite sushi places here in Rancho. Sushi is always super fresh and the rolls and offerings are always creative and super tasty. Service over the top attentive but not annoyingly so. Can be a dress up nice quiet dinner or more casual both work. There is a nice room off to the side that can accommodate a private party which is nice too. It is hardly ever super busy and the wait is generally minimal. We visited Kuwada yesterday with a group of six and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Right at the start, when our waiter brought water, he spilled an entire glass of ice water onto one member of our party, soaking his clothing. The waiter apologized and moved us to another table, but the only assistance offered was a few towels, which obviously could not address clothing that had been fully soaked. It was uncomfortable and set the tone for the rest of the visit. Service was slow, particularly when ordering. The sushi itself was also very underwhelming, especially considering the high prices. It tasted comparable to pre-made supermarket sushi rather than freshly prepared restaurant quality. Despite the incident and overall poor experience, no accommodation or gesture was offered. Instead, a mandatory 20% gratuity was added for what they classified as a "large group" of six, which came to over $53 just for gratuity'. We had requested separate checks upon arrival but were told they would split it afterward, which required us to go through the receipt ourselves and calculate each party's portion. Overall, the combination of service issues, pricing, automatic gratuity, and disappointing food quality made this a frustrating visit. Based on our experience, we would not return. read more
