About a decade ago, my coworker and I had a chat where he told me the dim sum in Vancouver was very good, perhaps better than SGV. That conversation stuck with me. Well with a sample size of a single restaurant, a group of us made the trek to try the land of Van's dim sum on a rainy Friday afternoon. With a closing time of 3pm, we lyfted ourselves to Kerrisdale and had about 45 minutes to order and eat. To be fair, many other dineries had been recommended with some offering all-day dim sum. Alas! those places would have to wait. It was a quiet last hour of dim sum, where polite conversations were happening while the soft raindrops and gloomy view out the window contrasted with the brightly lit interior. There were families and friend groups alike spread out occupying a third of dining tables there. Much like back home, push carts are a rare but welcomed sight as the dim sum ladies try to push the goods on us. I spoke in Cantonese which tickled them. They were confused when they tried speaking similarly with my non-Canto friends, though they turned out just as proficient in English. Some came by to talk with us about the dragon boat festival happening that weekend. Service was quick and food was fresh. Save for one item that was sold out, everything we ordered came out hot and fresh. This included steamed BBQ pork bun, rice rolls with shrimps, shrimp dumplings, siu mai, chicken feet, and a green mochi sesame ball that was surprisingly tasty. We also got two teapots of tieguanyin and oolong mix. As the hour drew to an end, the workers slowly started sitting down for their own lunch. Compared with SGV, the quality and experience are pretty close in my opinion, and that's not a bad thing. read more

There aren't many dim sum restaurants around where they push the food around on a cart anymore. This could very possibly be the one and only one left in Vancouver. The food here was just OK. There are so many other restaurants within Metro Vancouver that serve dim sum far superior to what we had here. This place is a bit of a novelty though since it's probably the only place where you can still see food being pushed around on a cart. Don't count on that cart actually reaching your table though. There seemed to be only one cart and it wasn't very good about travelling to every corner of the restaurant. You will very likely end up having to fill out an order form and send it to the kitchen. One-line review: The food here is excellent but pricey. In particular, the dim sum is very good, probably my favourite thing in the restaurant. We've eaten it in and taken it out, and it was good both ways. We ordered a couple of dishes of 'regular' food for take out -- a scallop and vegetable dish and some Hong Kong style chow mein noodles which were likewise very tasty, but they were ludicrously expensive (mid $60s, I think). In my world, that kind of money should buy a LOT more food. Free parking can be found in the neighbourhood, but it's a challenge. Parking on 41st Ave is at meters. Bottom line: I'd give the food quality a solid 4 and the pricing a 2, so we'll call it a 3. But if you've got money to burn, you can get an excellent meal here. read more

I had a friends reunion in this Chinese Restaurant in Kerrisdale and this is my first dine-out in this neighbourhood. Every time I walk pass the restaurant it gives me an old school impression. My first time in this restaurant was a good experience and the din sum are authentic like those in Hong Kong. I should say they preserve the authentic taste and the size of Har Gou (Shrimp dumplings) is larger than those in Hong Kong. I found the size of the din sum is generally larger in overseas - similar to those in Sydney. The service was good, the servers are attentive and polite. It will be nice to visit again. read more

We had dinner here since it was closed last time we tried to have dimsum. This area reminds me a little bit of West Portal and Inner Sunset in San Francisco. They have a McDonald's and a bus line that passes through. The area seems pretty decent like a lot of locals live here. I digress. The dinner here was mediocre. I wish I could of ordered more dishes to try but with 2 kids it is hard since they are picky and limited on eating. I saw a lot of local residents or so it seems and families come here on a Wednesday night. They have a robot to bring out dishes of food. Dim sum makes me nostalgic for my childhood; growing up and getting cart service dim sum after church every weekend. Cart service is quite rare nowadays and Golden Ocean is one of the few places left in the city that serve their dim sum cart style. During Covid times, staff are masked up and wearing gloves, tables are socially distant and there is hand sanitizer all throughout the restaurant. They are also offering take out and delivery via Fantuaan. I have to say, that this is one of the better dim sum spots I've been to in the city. Even with cart service, the food comes out warm and fresh. The quality of the dishes are high. The portions of each dumpling are large. Prices are decent for each dish. If there is something that isn't offered via cart service, you can order it a'la carte, which is what we did for a few dishes. A few of my stand out favorite dishes were the sio mai, hao gao, chinese donut, and the sweet bbq pork buns. Although, everything we had was delicious. Overall, a really great dim sum experience in the city with wonderful service. Parking is a bit tricky, as you have to find the parking garage behind the building. But there is also plenty of street parking available. Will definitely be back in the near future! read more

The grande dame of old school dim sum is my "go to" place. This is where I find all the traditional Cantonese fare - shrimp dumplings, rice wrapped beef (choong fun), etc. They still push the dim sum carts around! Have many favorites but what comes to mind are the rice wrapped Chinese donuts, deep fried taro dumplings and the chicken feet. Nothing reinvented or fusion. Just prepared fresh with quality equal to and sometimes exceeding places like Kirin. When the owner is around (weekends for sure) the service and food are truly 5 stars. It's a marvel to observe the quickening! Situated in the heart of Kerrisdale area of Vancouver, you will find many old style food places being gradually replaced with new Asian trendy. Came here for an early lunch on our last day in Vancouver. (It's nice that this place opens early at 8am; we came a little before 11). We were immediately seated...in the back corner of the restaurant. I sensed that we'd be ignored/overlooked by the staff and food carts, so I asked to switch to a different table in the front of the restaurant. Food: 4.5-5/5 (All the food was piping hot and everything was delicious) The normal dim sum menu does have English translations but no prices and few pictures of the food. We asked one of the waiters for prices for each other the dishes and he gave us a sheet with the price breakdown of all the dishes (see photo). Neither my boyfriend nor I speak Cantonese (?) so ordering was a lot of pointing and gesturing to items on the push carts or menu. We managed to get what we wanted though! My favorites were the Siu Mai and the BBQ pork buns. Everything was flavorful and well seasoned but I wish there was soy sauce on the table for the extra umami factor. Service: Better than most Chinese restaurants (staff were nicer than the average Chinese restaurant but long waits for food or for waiter to take our order) Having a general idea of the dim sum dishes you want beforehand would be helpful if you don't speak Cantonese. This was my first time trying traditional-style dim sum and this place left me with a great impression. Both the decor and style of serving are really old-school - the servers still bring the dishes around on carts, although not everything makes the rounds so you can catch any of them for an order if there's something on the menu you really want. They stamp a card for your table when you get a dish and I thought the stamping was easy to understand so there were no surprises at the end. There's also a dim sum "robot" bringing dishes around. We didn't get anything from the robot so I'm not sure how it works but it has an electronic cat face and cat ears - I thought it was very cute and didn't compromise the traditional aesthetic of the place. All of the food we tried was delicious. I'm pescatarian but thought there was still a great variety to try. I personally tried the pan-fried taro cake, steamed lotus seed paste buns, black sesame rice balls, steamed shrimp dumpling pan-fried green beans, a steamed green that I wasn't sure on the name of, and mango pudding. Everything was really fresh. I especially liked the green beans which came in a tasty sauce and were cooked perfectly, and the black sesame rice balls, which I thought were a little different and interesting. Really everything was great though and deserves an honourable mention. The bill came out to $28 per person, which was actually pretty good value considering others in the group ate more than I did. One person warned us that they might treat us differently because no one in our group spoke Cantonese, but even if that was the case I felt that the service was great - all the staff was very warm and it was easy to get someone's attention when we wanted to order something. They did tell us we couldn't split the bill between the 6 of us - apparently they sometimes will and sometimes won't according to my friends in the party who had been there before - but it's easy enough to transfer money that it wasn't much of an inconvenience. Been here a few times for dim sum lately and dinner too. Certainly a lot quieter than before. The service is still incredible. The entire team was very enthusiastic in taking care of all the diners. If you are into old fashion dim sum cart, Golden Ocean is the place to be in the west side. Huge assortments on the menu so if you don't see it in the cart, they will bring it with a smile. Some items are only available on weekends and I do wish that was marked in the menu as I don't always remember. I also wish the have chrysanthemum tea as sometimes we prefer non caffeinated tea. Dinner is yummy too. If you prefer less flavour in your dishes, you can ask for less salt and MSG Free. Each dishes are jam packed with flavour and plain rice is recommended to offset and balance the taste. read more

Came here for family dinner. The restaurant was only 2/3 full when we got seated but packed after an hour. My mother in law ordered set 10 courses menu. The food was quite slow and super greasy. Server constantly knocked down our tea cups while serving food which made our table like a swim pool. No apology was given nor the tissues to clean. It just totally ruined the dinner! Will not come here again! If you are looking for cheap quality of food and sad service, this is it! read more

Been coming here for dimsum for years. A solid choice for dimsum outside of Richmond. My faves here: mini sticky rice lotus wrap, Chinese donut wrapped with rice rolls, pan fried turnip cake, shrimp dumpling, breaded shrimp with deep fried egg tofu, egg tarts. Recommend staying away from the congee unless you like very watered down congee. Convenient & free parking underground. Love coming here though it's always busy! Another family dinner. Basically the same review as the last with an update. I've mentioned before that I thought it was an off night on my last visit. It wasn't. The food is not as good as it once was. It wasn't bad but it definitely has been better. One heavy criticism: The desserts. Terrible. I can do these desserts at home with far more finesse. The baked tapioca. The waitress said that they had just made it, i.e. fresh. Not. It was rubbery in texture. A sure sign that it was re-heated. Another sure sign? Lukewarm. Barely any red bean paste in the middle, other than a thin streak. When it was being served, the thin layer of bean paste was separating from the tapioca, in whole chunks, because it was so rubbery. Red bean soup. Absolutely terrible. It was murky pale red colour looking unusually cloudy "white". Should not look like that. Reason being, they thickened it with flour or something. There was no flavour from the bean, nor from anything else. Barely any taste at all. This was the poorest attempt at red bean soup that I've seen and tasted. I do this dessert at home for my daughter from scratch. Mine kicks this ones a$$ easily. read more

Another revisit to this restaurant after a long long break! When my parents were alive, we used to go there pretty often and this was also one of our regular place for larger family dinners. Alas, with time passes, there are less and less members in my family now, so coming here really brings back lots of memories! Ok back to the food, I'm here for dim sum with my partner and we ordered quite a bit of food since we wanted to see if the taste is still up to par and I'm glad to say it still is. One particular item that stands out is the Steamed Rice Rolls; I chose the beef and cilantro filling and it was just perfect! Very thin and delicate with the beef filling seasoned just right! Really, it's hard to find this kind of quality nowadays even in Hong Kong. The other items were all very nicely done and not too greasy, the restaurant was not busy at all, I guess cuz it was Tuesday morning at around 10:30am. Now that I know the Chef owner is still the same I have more confidence in returning! The reason I took one star off from 4 stars is due to the lack of organization in the staffs, there were many servers on the floor but they were all busy chatting (very loudly) and or having their own brunch!! Been here twice 'cause it's close by. Both times I must say service is a bit crappy. Long waits and wrong orders. The food was poor to average the first time but I've noticed the quality being better the 2nd time around. Things I'd recommend getting: -Deep fried prawns -Beef rice sheet rolls -Shrimp Dumplings (Ha Gow) -Matcha black sesame ball -Black Bean & Garlic Spareribs Things you should not get: -Custard bun -Egg Tart (if it doesn't look fresh) -Chicken Chow Mein Note: We ordered the egg tarts pretty late in the game and were told that they were sold out and then realized they still had one plate left and we unknowingly took it but it was not fresh and were better off without them. If you're looking for some cheap but delicious old school push cards dim sum, then this is the place to be! My friend from out of town was craving dim sum so we Yelped and found this place nearby! Always love hanging around the Kerisdale area, because there are so many wonderful places to eat! After eating here we actually proceeded to eat at Nana's green tea which was only a few minutes away. Haven't been here in years as a bit of a trek from north burnaby. But came to celebrate mom's birthday. Made reservations and preordered the free tapioca they offer. FYI, they have a free parking lot in the back of the restaurant that not many know about. I think I had visited quite a few times before discovering it. Staff are friendly but they were busy with tons of large tables. Asked for water and it never got delivered. Although only asked once. The waiter went to check. 15 min later we asked yet another wait staff to check and to also bring the free tapioca they offer and maybe 10-15 min later still nothing. We told a 3rd waiter to just cancel it as we had been waiting for 30 min to find out if it was coming and obviously it wasn't! The second waiter came back to check if we got anything but told her we had not. We were all super frustrated as kids were getting restless and we had waited at least 30 min for them to try to figure out what was going on. We decided to just go to the cash register and pay. What a way to end a birthday dinner! Food 3.5-4 Service 3-3.5 (staff were friendly but they were busy and not necessarily their fault the dish didn't come out, but FRUSTRATING!) We ordered sticky rice, spring rolls, beef tendon, chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle, rice roll with shrimp, and tapioca pudding for dessert. The food was solid, not outstanding though. Our favourites were the beef tendon and the rice roll with shrimp. The tapioca pudding wasn't very good however, it was thick and dry making it tough to eat. Located on the second floor, this dim sum place can be pretty hidden. I see a lot more non-Asian dining here then elsewhere. It was highly recommended by a local too.. came here around 10:30am to avoid the long wait. It was loud and exciting, with conversations and orders all over the place. Food was amazing. There were also some very creative dishes like, the scallop with fried taro; baked tapioca pudding with red bean dessert, etc. The classic dim sum was also excellent. This place used to be much better. Wonder if the owners or management changed. The food is still good, and is now on the cheaper side of good dim sum thanks to all of the price increases elsewhere. The service, however, is absolutely abysmal. Especially the male waitresses. Asking your repeat customers who made a reservation to choose between a handful of tables that are for half the number of people, and right by the entrance where there's a cold draft every time it's open, is pretty disrepectful. Especially when the restaurant is barely half full and was still that way after our meal. Golden Ocean has been here in this location for a very, very, very long time. And that is pretty impressive considering the high turnover of restaurants these days. It's a nice dim sum place to go to if you don't want to drive all the way to Richmond. The staff is fast and friendly. The place is reasonably big and the tables can sit large or small groups of people. There's more of a line-up during the weekend, but it's a bonus when you can wait and there's chairs to sit down. The food carts arrive filled with different kinds of dim sum...pork dumpliings, ha gao, deep fried tofu in spicy salt, spare ribs, siu mai, egglpant with shrimp paste, flat noodle with shrimp or pork, sticky rice, black sesame dumpling dessert....I can go on. If you can't find the item you want on the food cart, you can just order from their list. This is solid dim sum, folks, and the prices are very reasonable, particularly if you come before 11:00 a.m. and get 20% off. You just need to be seated by then. Also, it's one of the last dim sum restaurants to wheel dishes around on the carts. The fact that this place is always packed with hungry customers ensures that there is a steady stream of freshly made dim sum circulating. And when you think dim sum, you think food carts, right? If we have out-of-town guests, we always bring them here for the bustling experience that, unfortunately, most newer dim sum restaurants are foregoing. And the lady who tallies up your bill at the end (you can bring it up to her if you're in a rush) is a virtuoso at what she does. I'm inclined to trust her, since i never know how much each stamp costs (plus there's the discount), and the bill always comes out to lower than I think it should. read more

Not many restaurant that serves dim sum in heated carts anymore.. But you can always find it here! I call it Chinese Fast Food, as soon as you sit down, even before they bring you your pot of tea, the ladies with their carts will come to your table and show show you they have in their carts. The dim sum items are good and hot. If they do not have what you want, just ask them to place an order to the kitchen and they will deliver it to your table really fast. The staff is very friendly and efficient. We had dinner here a few times and the food is good and portions are a large size, average for 10 people dinner with dessert and leftovers are about $10-15/ea. I came around 11:30 am on Sunday for dim sum with friends and it was perfect timing as there was a much longer line soon after we were seated. The spot is decorated much in keeping to any other higher end Chinese restaurant. One neat thing is that they still have people pushing around carts of dim sum which most other dim sum spots have done away with. The food itself was on par with the other good dim sum spots in town with the shumai being particularly memorable. The soy sauce fried noodles was a little underwhelming but all the other dishes we had were pretty good. Definitely worth checking this place out in addition to all the classics (Sun Sui Wah, Fisherman's Terrace, Kirin etc) in Vancouver and Richmond to see which you like best. read more

This continues to be one of Vancouver's most consistent and delicious Chinese Seafood restaurants that remains predominantly visited by locals. Don't get me wrong I still bring my tourist friends here, but it's more off the tour books and sites than say Sun Sui Wah or Kirin. What makes this place a success is the fact that they're not so Asian that non-Asians feel uncomfortable dining here. It's always a balanced crowd, served eagerly by some of the friendliest and chattiest waitstaff I've ever seen at a Chinese restaurant. Menus are bilingual without any of the misspellings or grammatical errors. I hear that owner of this place was also the co-owner (before he sold out his share) of the other popular "Golden" cafes like Golden Oscar and Golden Award etc. Be sure to get the super soft tofu, it's one of the smoothest most delicious dishes they have. read more

Things started off with breaded shrimp balls served with both tofu and eggplant deep fried underneath/onto it. It was fairly standard and went down well. The sweet chips with honey (a dessert they served to us first since it was fresh), however, was not good and an overly sweet assault on my taste buds. I thoroughly honey garlic spareribs served with more shrimp balls. The steamed tofu and egg white with diced seafood was soft and easy to eat with many different elements making for a good combination. I thought the house special crab with noodles was quite good. I love noodles with my seafood and it was tasty, filling, and very saucy. The stir fried beef with peppers and steamed buns was decent. I ate it up like a Chinese soft taco. The beef was a little on the thick side and chewy. The deep fried sole fillet on brocoli was a good enough as standard seafood and veggie combination dish. I refrained from the deep fried duck wrapped in taro due to my aversion to taro, but it seemed crispy on top and tender inside. I enjoyed most of the desserts including the baked tapioca pudding with red been inside. Janice wasn't too impressed with the traditional tofu pudding. The deep fried green tea sticky rice balls (right) with black sesame inside was fairly delicious with its rich sesame flavour in addition to being very green. The server will take the sheet and enter the order into the computer, then he/she printed the dim sum list and put it on the customer's table. In this way, the customers will know the type and the quantity of dim sum that they'd ordered, and the servers can keep track of the order as they bring the dim sum to the table. Also, using the computer to enter the order is more efficient and more effective than having the server to write down the order because miscommunication might occur if the customer and/or the server has accent. Surely, the customer would speak to the server if they want something that is not on the dim sum sheet. I was surprised to see the server used separate little papers to write down our order because the server might not be able to follow up on our order if he/she loses those little papers. As a result, the servers were not sure of the dim sum that we'd ordered, and it was difficult for us to tell the server which dim sum was missing. Their ordering system was indeed disappointing. Another dimsum dive with the "golden" moniker. God knows how many they are! Situated right behind the complex where Ajisai is located, underground parking was quite convenient and upon taking a couple of flight upstairs, a typical Cantonese style restaurant stands. This maybe the only authentic Cantonese restaurant in the area of Kerrisdale/Shaughnessy, and this pretty much explains the huge crowd. It's noisy, bustling, very busy, even the servers seem stressed from the pace and vibe of the restaurant. In fact, despite making reservations, I waited still for some time before getting a table. The food is decent and perhaps a little above average, considering they serve the dimsum the traditional push cart style. My usual staples arrived from the table still fresh, special mention goes to flavourful pork siu mai, and delicious deep fried black sesame balls. There is still a great deal to be desired ambience wise. I realize that Chinese restaurants are noisy, but it was way too loud here, it makes you want to finish off your food and head out. Probably explains why the staff attitude towards customers seem hurried. The super tight and cramped seating does not help at all either. I've had more pleasant and comfortable dimsum experience elsewhere, even in the side of Asian populated Richmond. It's a decent dimsum destination only if you're hankering for some Cantonese cuisine and happen to be in the Kerrisdale area. Otherwise, I would head off to Richmond or Kirin for better dimsum eats. read more

I met up with a friend who was working in the area community centre. When asked what I feel like eating dim sum came to mind. I always like dim sum and I haven't had it in a while. My friend suggested Golden Ocean Seafood Restaurant. I've been here a few times for both lunch and dinner but that was ages ago. When I walked in the first thing that came to mind was wow has this place ever fallen! It's a bit difficult to put into words but it just seemed that what it was 5 years ago (when I was last there) it is today! Nothing changed! The management did not think to upgrade the place to make it more inviting. Well the place was half full. Not quite the new, styling, and vibrant place it once was. The food was ok. We ordered a variety of your standard dim sum dishes. They have a mixture of the pushed food cart and order the dish you want. For the most part it works. The food is generally fresh and comes out piping hot. Taste... well I have to say nothing special. It's just standard Chinese dim sum faire. Not horrible but not great either. Don't come expecting to be pampered, but the service is way better than what you will see in Hong Kong and the dim sum quality is both cleaner and just as good as the places I tried in HK.
