So, I'm a person that has been going to La BBQ religiously throughout all the moves and staff changes. I usually order 3 to 4 lbs or brisket and freeze what I don't eat since brisket reheats so well. I'm not falling out of love with the brisket, just the experience now that it's in the quickie pickie. Also I'm not blaming QP at all, they're just along for the ride. My beef is with how now the experience has changed. While it's great that it's mostly an indoor wait, gone are the line beers and musical numbers. You can't bring your own beer anymore and there's no more free beer. Want bread with your brisket? That's extra. Pickles? Extra. Onions? Extra. Want a quart of a side? The container is 3/4ths full. None of the personality is there anymore, just a sort of clash of culture between the Quickie Pickie clients and BBQ lovers. The other thing is that other places are catching up in terms of brisket and have revamped things on their side including HEB and Buc-ee's and that's at a much lower price, free pickles/bread/onions, and none of the wait. Today was probably my last big buy for now from that location :( If you're not gonna try, then I'm not gonna buy. My husband ordered the pork ribs and sausage and said they were good as well but the beef completely outshined them. Totally worth the wait!!! My husband and I love barbecue but it is very hard to find a place with great meat and sides. We went yesterday and we knew there would be a line but the entire line is outside and they close at 6pm so I highly don't recommend going in summer. My husband and I got the brisket sandwich's, potato salad, and apple pie. (They we're out of the shells and cheese) The brisket was absolutely great but if you like your brisket lean I don't recommend the sandwich since they don't ask which you prefer. When it comes to sides I'm very picky. I'm a native Texan and you can't have barbecue without potato salad. Neither of us liked the potato salad. I thought it was way too spicy and my husband did not like the way it was seasoned. They also did not have any beef ribs. Everyone is different! I do have to say the brisket was one of the best I've had. That may sound odd to say, but it kind of distracted from the incredible meat. Pro tip: If you don't want to deal with lines, pre-order and you can simply walk up to the window on the side of the building and pick up your order. La Barbecue is a food truck on Austin's First Street. While waiting in the long, but manageable line, they give out free Lone Star beer, and offer live music. If you don't get there early enough, their meats start selling out. My three friends & I shared half a pound each of the beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey breast, & pork ribs. On the side, we got white bread, and a quart of chipotle cole slaw. Each meat was amazing! The brisket, which had a thin layer of fat, was super tender, and juicy. The pulled pork melted in my mouth. As opposed to most turkey, this one was very juicy. It paired well with their tangy & sweet barbecue sauces on the side. The pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. The dry rub penetrated all the way through the meat, and each bite had a wonderful barbecue taste. Finally, the cole slaw was light & refreshing. It was spicy from the smoked jalapeños. This barbecue was pretty darn good. I was in town one Sunday morning and initially got in line for Franklin's at 940 am, but was told by an employee I wouldn't be getting to order until nearly 3pm. So I exited that line and got in line at the much smaller LA Barbecue line by 10am. I was about 20th in line and it took me until Noon to get to order. Which was fine since I didn't have to be anywhere until 1pm. As far as the food, I ordered 1 Beef rib (pricy at $22/lb), 1 lb brisket, 2 sausage links and a potato salad. The price was a little bit of a sticker shock and reminded me of Killen's in Pearland, which I think was better and I got more food. Brisket - very tender, even with the mixed bag of fatty and lean pieces they gave me, but almost too peppery. Wish they guy at window would have given me all fatty pieces though Sausage - homemade and you can tell. the appearance and initial taste makes you think they put a little bit of yellow curry into the casing, especially since it's fairly spicy for a bbq restaurant. Absolutely spectacular on every level. Brisket is the bomb. The perfectly smoked bark and unnaturally tender/moist beef is hard to describe. It's been perfect each time in over 10 visits. The beef rib... oh, the beef rib. Meat candy. Meat butter. Whatever you call it, call it amazing. It's second to none. I also love that they have unique pork ribs as they're finished with a slightly sweet sauce which is a bit different for Central Texas. The hot guts are the best sausages I've had anywhere. I've eaten at over 50 Texas barbecue spots and theirs tops the list. Perfect coarse grind, peppery, smokey, and a unique orange hue that oozes out from the crisp casing. Sides are nothing to sniff at either. Love the buttermilk potato salad, chipotle slaw and bean salad. All top notch. Their sauces are also my favorite of any Texas joint. Definitely the best Barbecue you can get in Austin without waiting hours in the Franklins line. Now, don't get me wrong; La Barbecue still has a wait (about an hour or so on Saturdays), but it's much shorter. Like Franklins, they run out of things (one time I went and they ran out of brisket, which was not the best, but still fine), so commit to going and adjust your day to plan to eat around 12:30 or 1:00 and show up at 11:30 to noon. read more

A definite must, must, must if you are in Austin. I've been to most of the popular TX BBQ spots and La holds its own. Go on an off hour time, pre or post lunch time and experience some great BBQ. If not, be prepared to wait in a line (not as bad as the other popular place), but it's well worth it. We went at 2:00 PM on a Wednesday and had no wait. Also, they had everything we asked for. We had a smorgasbord of meat including ribs, beef rib, brisket and sausage. The beef rib is slap yo mama good! My mouth is salivating as I type. WOW. This is it folks. The holy grail of brisket at half the wait time as franklin's. I am not the biggest fan of brisket, it usually seems to disappoint me. But by the time it was our turn to order, brisket was the only meat option left. I figured that much after reading yelp reviews during the wait, and they were spot on. We arrived at 1:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon, and we were out of there by 3:40 after eating. Even though I could not try my favorite pork ribs and sausage, I knew the brisket was going to be worth the wait as soon as I laid eyes on the slab of brisket being carved, juices flowing freely with every touch. They cut us a slice to sample before ordering, and wow...that was it. Brisket heaven. Literally. Yes, there is a layer of fat, and yes it may be greasy, but the flavor as it hits your tongue makes all the calories well worth it The bbq sauce was not necessary to use, and neither were the bread, pickles, and onions. But they each added to the experience a little, and I would recommend trying them to experiment a little. They do accept credit/debit, and they have an atm machine that charges over $3 to use if you need it. By the time we got there, the free keg of beer was long gone, so make sure to BYOB. If it has been raining, wear shoes because there is lots of mud to get through. Came here on a Saturday at the end of SXSW with only about a 40 minute wait at noon, I'd say that's pretty lucky. So one of the plus sides to la Barbecue, every one has mentioned, is the free beer as you wait. The day I went, there was a Firestone 805 vendor - crisp, refreshing, perfect starter to the meal. My friend and I ordered the 1/2 lb. brisket, 1 sausage link, and some pulled pork topped with pickled onions. We ordered all of the sides: chipotle slaw, potato salad, and southwest black bean salad. Meats: I know everyone raves about the brisket, but really it left no impression on me. My friend agreed saying that she could get equally decent brisket from her dad's cooking. The sausage was surprisingly our favorite meat, there was just enough spice and it was grilled to perfection. The pulled pork was good, but again, left no impression. Sides: The sides were okay. My favorite side was the chipotle slaw, which stood out on its own. Though I would prefer a less smoky flavor to complement the meats, as we're already getting enough of the smoked flavor. The black bean salad was just another black bean salad. Maybe we went on a bad day, at a bad time or we somehow got a bad cut of the meats, but the experience was underwhelming. Oh God! This is probably one of the best BBQ. However, the line is killing me. I went there around noon, it took me around 2 hours to get my BBQ. I heard that you can pre-order it a few days before! Cool trailer park eatery (The Good Life Food Park), live music and friendly people. I arrived here on Saturday around 12:15 and waited for about an hour and a half. Well worth the wait. I ordered the following: Pulled Pork & Brisket w/ Red Onion Sandwich (Called the El Sancho and I can see why. Geeeezus!) This sandwich also typically comes with sausage to make it a three meat "loco". They were already sold out of sausage by the time I got to the front of the line, otherwise, I'd have been all over that. Also ordered the potato salad, once again german style. We had been to La Barbecue in the past, but all independently. Given the recent departure of pitmaster Esaul Ramos, and the elevation of Dylan Taylor as the new pitmaster, we wanted to see how the transition is working out. At this point in our trip, we were way behind our planned schedule, having lingered a little to long at some of the previous stops. So it was after 4:00 pm before we made it to the line, and noticed several items already sold out. Brisket was still available, and knowing that La Barbecue delivers some of the best in Texas, it was an easy choice for us. With a little potato salad and homemade pickles on the side, we settled comfortably into a feast of this sublime brisket. Every bite was memorable and spectacular, and even more so given that this was 4:00 pm brisket! If you've never been to La Barbecue, you're missing out on some of the Top 10 BBQ in the state in my opinion. And generally speaking, the lines are never terribly long, so you're assured of getting quality product. The relocation last September to the Aztec Food Park at 1906 E. Cesar Chavez seems like a good fit. The vibe is great, and we had a good time visiting with several local regulars. Visiting Austin, we thought about Franklin Barbecue but were afraid of the wait. It was a Sunday and it had been raining. We drove up to La Barbecue and saw no line, wondered if it was closed. Nuff said. I haven't had franklins yet, so I can't compare to that. I will say this was life changing bbq though. The fatty brisket and smoked Mac and cheese were my favorite items. I also had the pork ribs, chipotle sausage, regular sausage, and pulled pork. Listed in the ranking that I preferred them. I don't normally like bbq sauce either, but the sauce here actually enhances the flavors instead of overpowering. It's a bit tangy and allows me to eat way more bbq because the acidity gives my palette a break and refresh. The sliced pickles are well brined and spicy, while the potato rolls fluffy and make a great vessel for the meat! I really loved this place. I really wanted to love this place and it's obvious a lot of people do. Personally I felt the ribs were extremely over seasoned so much so I was scraping it off in globs. The brisket was the thickest cut I have ever seen and had more fat than meat on some slices, tasted better than the ribs but also over seasoned. Lastly, pickles,onions and bread didn't come with it but was available for an extra charge. My goodness there is no excuse for that and the first time I've seen a bbq place do that. They have tarps as well to shield you. When I went there at 10:45AM, I counted about 70 people ahead of me. The awesome thing is that they give out free Lonestar kegged beer while you wait. As a guy from the SF Bay Area, I didn't understand what all the hype is about BBQ. But, I was told when you go to Austin, you have to go for 'good' BBQ. Well we weren't going to wait 4 hours for Franklins...but I heard from a colleague and got a tip from our waiter at dinner that there is an ex Franklin employee that started up a BBQ food truck called La Barbecue. So we got to the La Barbecue 'compound' 15 minutes before it opened. The line was already at least 100 people. We decided to wait. They served free beer to us as we waited...we talked with locals and vacationers alike while we waited. We waited for 2hrs and 40 mins. AND IT WAS WORTH IT. Now I get it. Now I get why people will stand in line for hours just to eat great BBQ. We had the beef brisket, the pork ribs and the hot sausage link. All were outstanding but the magic was the brisket. I had never had moist beef brisket nearly melt in my mouth. We had both the moist (fatty) and the lean. My favorite was the fatty moist brisket. The pork ribs were fall off the bone tender. I used no sauces. the simple salt and pepper seasoning and the wood smoke did magical things to both the beef and the pork.
