My first time here and I wish I would have known about them sooner. I was here for a work social and I got there too late, but decided to stay and have dinner and drinks solo! They passed my Mexican food basics test (chips, salsa, margs) with flying colors: white corn tortilla chips were hot. fresh. thin. perfectly salted and the best roasted tomato salsa I have tried since I lived in Texas. It was chunky, full of cilantro, medium+ spiciness. One of the first times I have felt a burn on my tongue from house salsa in this state! So good. A house lime margarita on the rocks was strong and tasty, with real lime juice. Great, attentive service. Food came pretty quickly; maybe 7 minutes! Delicious pork tamal and chicken quesadilla combo plate. Chicken (breast meat) filling was moist, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The cheese in the quesadilla was also delicious, unlike processed cheese used at many places. The tortilla was crisp and thin. Perfection!! The pork tamal was small, but very fresh and handmade. Love this place. The patio is amazing and it's a perfect space for an outdoor hang! I had shrimp tacos and they were honestly some of the best shrimp tacos I have had in a while. The service is great out server was a nice lady. The frozen margs come out amazing and great to drink during the chips and salsa moments before the food comes. The salsa is a bit salty for my taste but everything else is amazing and who knows maybe I just got a salty batch that day, I'll update this next time I go there. Food is mediocre, staff so-so, been here a couple times but will not go back after the last visit. My BFF is blind, she has a seeing eye dog that is well trained and wears the harness. I arrived early and my BFF and her husband arrived after I was seated. He dropped her off in front of the restaurant and her guide dog lead her to the door. I stepped up to lead her to our table and then her husband joined us after finding a place to park. Once we were all seated the guide dog curled up under the table and was barely noticeable. One of the wait staff came over and rudely asked for papers for the dog, which is illegal, and continued to be rude to us after we explained that they were not allowed to ask that question, but yes, my friend did have papers and the guide dog was needed as she was blind. The food and service was good but the manager/owner Jerry was arrogant and rude. We were having a good time outside until he came over to tell us to quiet down. We did get a tad bit loud when a large flying insect was in one of the lady's face and she was trying to swat it away. We tried to explain that to the owner but he did not want to hear it. Actually the couple with 2 dogs sitting at the table behind us saw it and the lady at their table swatted at the insect too. It's a Friday night and the ladies got together to hang out. Others were loud (because we can use our outside voices outside on the patio) as well but of course THE BLACK women had to be addressed. I can't say this is the worst Mexican food because it is absolutely NOT Mexican food. Whatever it was, It was awful. I got enchiladas suiza. Tiny, tasteless and dry bits of chicken wrapped -- not cooked in -- tortillas completely covered with a thick, white, unidentifiable sauce. I opened one enchilada and there were 4 tiny chunks of chicken so I was eating mostly tortillas and that nasty sauce. My friend had a burrito also drenched in the same sauce. It was nauseating. Such a big outdoor patio! I finally went with some friends who live just a block or so away and they're regulars haha. They have ranted and raved about it for so long I decided I better check it out. Keep in mind the place is pretty busy on the weekends. We got there early so we were able to get in without a week, but it was packed by the time we left. I got a banana margarita which was so yummy. Of course we got chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso for the table to share. How could you not?! And a shredded chicken quesadilla with hot sauce. It was so savory and yummy I was obsessed. As a first time customer I would say this place is good enough to give it a try. It has a nice atmosphere and vibrant music. The host was friendly and we were immediately seated. The server was nice but could have come by a little more often. It took a little while for him to get us out initial drinks. The food came out fairly quickly. I got the grilled chimichanga. I asked if it came with rice and beans and the server said no but it did so I was glad I didn't order an additional side as I started to. There was clearly a bit of a language barrier. Chimichanga's are my go-to at any Mexican restaurant and this was maybe my least favorite out of many I've tried. I can't say it was bad but it just wasn't good or what I was expecting. No distinct flavor. The texture was probably what I didn't like about it most. A bit too much of the doughiness and no ot enough chicken. I got jalapeno poppers as an appetizer and they were descent. The presentation could've been a bit more appealing instead of poppers spread amongst a heaping bed of lettuce. The other guest got nachos with steak shrimp and chicken. Those were good. The shrimp had a delicious grilled flavor. The water had a beachy taste so I got pink lemonade which only slightly covered up the previous taste. The chips and salsa were really good though. In conclusion. I would give it a try if you haven't been, but it's not somewhere on my list to revisit anytime soon. read more

Trust me, it pays to endure the painful parking situation. Even if you must walk... it is so worth it. This is the first Mexican restaurant in St. Louis where I did not have to add hot sauce... did not even think about it. Their food is both spicy and hot, full of flavor from the ground beef to the chicken in the enchiladas. The Chile Verde is incredible with the pork so tender. The Enchiladas Verde are also amazing including a trio of cheese, ground beef, and chicken for delicious variety. And churros... oh so good. We just keep coming back. read more

Dunno why there are so many 5-star reviews. This is your average, unremarkable Mexican restaurant. Nothing special here. Even the list of "specialidades" holds nothing you can't find at a dozen other area Mexican restaurants. We ordered the molcajete and carnitas. Both were large, flavorful entrees but both were very greasy and nothing was a standout. The beans were tasty but soupy. There was bone gristle in the shredded pork carnitas. Why can no Mexican restaurant make iced tea that doesn't taste like water? Why is the salsa made with pureed tomato sauce? Finally, the size and pace of this busy restaurant has created a thoughtless, factory-like atmosphere. Two examples: servers standing around staring at their phones in between taking orders/running food. (Why am I tipping when we're clearly an afterthought?) And a busser sweeping the floor right in front of an industrial fan blowing across the patio, ensuring whatever was on the floor was now on everyone's plates. We'll probably never be back--because we can get the same food (or better!) at a dozen other restaurants, many closer to home. read more

Busy outside w/ the patio & double-decker pergola porch deck. On the inside, very spacious, colorful and friendly w/ fast service and no pressure to order right away. They have a very extensive menu w/ plenty of choices to choose from and they have a vegetarian section as well. There's a good beer selection & margarita options. Great food from the appetizers to your actually meal w/ fresh ingredients. Taste's & smells for days. All in all; wasn't what I was expecting and so much more. Went here with friends with check out the new place!! The place is HUGE and there are two rooms to pick from. There is also a fantastic patio with a bar and fireplace for later. The interior is bright and wonderful artwork all over. Very cherry and colorful. We sat in a booth and we all order margaritas and got chips and salsa. The chips are just the way I love them,thin and salty and the salsa is just perfect! Not to spicy and not too mild. For my entree I got the fajita quesadilla with is a great way to eat your fajita Others got the chimichanga and regular fajita. All the food was so good and well presented...the service was also super friendly. We will for sure be back and sit on the patio next time! So glad this place is in the neighborhood read more

Service was good. The Catrina margaritas were super sweet but were hand shaken which I did appreciate. The steak fajita burrito was tasty, it did have an odd Smokey flavor to it that I was not accustomed to. I loved the guacamole and the salsa. The chips were perfectly thin/thick. Not too think where it breaks getting healing portion of salsa and not too thick where you weren't able to taste and enjoy the salsa. They do not offer bud select which was a shame. read more

There are a number of things that La Catrina has going for it. First and foremost is the patio. It's huge with a ton of seating and a good vibe. They also have a huge selection of food and margarita options. But for me, the cons did outweighs the pros. First, the parking lot is really small and a lot of the street parking around is residential permit parking only so you risk getting a ticket. The staff was also not very friendly. From the host, to the wait staff, no one was very kind and they were not attentive. Our queso also came out cold and we had a hard time flagging down the staff to get that fixed and get more chips and salsa. When the food came out it was all hot but in general just average in taste and quality. Some of the entrees were greasy, others were dry. Ultimately I decided I'd go back for drinks and appetizers but probably not for a full meal. read more

This place is right down the street from me and is amazing for takeout and dine in! I've tried something new every time I've come here and it is always amazing. The staff is friendly and fast-paced. Some of my favorite meals are the tortilla soup (just trust me), the tilapia entree, and the fajitas! I've always wanted to try la Catrina, but the size of the crowd has always intimidated me. I got lucky a few Fridays ago and was able to sit at the bar outside almost immediately. Although the outside temps were creeping towards 100 degrees, their patio is well covered and keeps as cool as a concrete patio in St. Louis can in June; not to mention the vibrant colors and numerous umbrellas make you almost forget you're sitting on Hampton. As for the food, I will say I had the most unique chimichanga I've ever had. I got the "chimichanga on the grill" which is what I think would come to be if a chimichanga and fajitas had a child. It was surrounded by sizzling hot veggies and covered in just the right amount of cheese. The only reason I'm giving a 4 star is because I think the margaritas were pretty good (they don't even compare to Chavas, which are top notch in my opinion). I say think because I had so many it's hard to say but I guess they were good enough to keep drinking. I will definitely be returning. I would like to sit on the upper deck and see if the margaritas taste the same and up there. read more

He gives me a drink with ants in it and when placing a order for chips and dip just looks at my husband and walks away without saying anything then when telling him the drink have bugs in it he just poor the drink out. We sat inside the restaurant and to my surprise there was ants on the table . I do not recommend eating here! read more

Everytime we asked anything of him, whether it be for more water or my sons sour cream we ordered or a question on the menu he acted like we were inconveniencing him extremely. Love La Catrina. I was introduced to their fine food as a birthday lunch with my step-son. I ordered Tacos Michocan - three soft tacos filled with chicken and Mexican sausages. Topped with cilantro and onions. Absolutely delicious and it has become my go-to carry-out order. Chips are also great with the order, served in brown bag carry-out which adds to the "street taco" feel. They don't mention the limes with the food which is a nice squeeze-on plus. The staff at La Catrina is always friendly for carry-out or seated. Don't overlook the patio seating. There are Televisions tuned usually to sports for those who might be interested but not overwhelmingly so. It is fortunately not a sports bar but a great Mexican restaurant. The 2 story patio is what caught my eye for this restaurant. Like most Mexican restaurants, they give you complimentary chips and salsa. The tortilla chips here are probably the BEST I've had in the city. They had the right amount of crisp, salt, and oil. I could eat the chips without the salsa, which was also very good. If you are looking for a great patio that is large and has some that is shaded come here! It has a large two story patio outside, the main level part of the patio has umbrellas and a covered area. I don't know if the upstairs part has umbrellas but there is plenty of shaded area on the main level if you want shade. The restaurant has good happy hour Monday- Friday til 5 with $3 margaritas. We got a spicy margarita and it was very good! To eat we got a variety of things, I got the fajita quesadilla and it was fabulous I would recommend. My one friend got the nachos and they looked delicious and the other friend got tacos which she said were super good! I would recommend anything we had! Food is good and authentic Mexican, chips were yummy-they were thin and had just the right amount of salt. Salsa was fair, not very tasty, guacamole was really good. The downfall is their drinks, seems like most everything is pre-made from machines and mixes are from gallon jugs. I had a frozen daiquiri for $11 and it seemed like all sugar and no alcohol. I vowed never to go back to this restaurant after the last debacle however we decided to give La Catrina another chance, sorry I did. We called in a carry out order happy someone answered the phone. When I arrived to the bar the bartender (woman) was not acknowledging me or looking my way. After standing at the bar for for awhile, I asked her if my carry out order was ready and she promptly said very rudely "oh we're not doing carry out you can't order carry out we're too busy.' We came here for a drink and relax. Disappointing, at best. First, they seem to be cavalier about the CDC guidelines - tables too close together, place too crowded, employees wearing masks below their nostrils. Second, we were seated right away, but waited for some time for our server, who I had to flag down when she finally looked up from her cellphone. We had to flag her down on more than one occasion. Unless there's a family emergency, I don't see how it's acceptable for an employee to be using her cellphone in plain view of patrons and blatantly ignoring them. Third, we ordered a jumbo margarita and a banana daiquiri, both of which tasted like there was no alcohol whatsoever. At $8.49, that's an awfully expensive glass of kool-aid. The double decker patio is nice, however. With a little more distance, better service, and better drinks, I would consider a second visit. As that's a lot to change, it's unlikely I'll be back.
