This is my second time stopping in for a quick burrito craving. The first time was a good impression - I had the chili lime burrito last time. It was good. So, I had to come back for a second time. The carnitas burrito I had today was good too. I think I have found a go-to burrito place when I'm in this area. The food is good. Burritos anyway. I have not tried other items yet - but intend to do in future visits. The service is good. The price is excellent. The place is clean. I especially like the sink at the front near the entrance for you to wash your hands with soap after eating the burrito with your hands. I guess one could always go to the restroom to wash your hands, but, if you don't need to relieve yourself, the sink is a nice reminder to wash your hands so that your lunch smell does not hang sepia longer than it should. read more

After a year I finally get a chance to return and see if La Costeña has gotten better since the move to their new location and new ordering system. I came later in the day there was no line and I had an opportunity to really look at the menu. It was still confusing I think they need to write specific burritos instead of what they currently have. And the meat choice I wanted wasn't even written on there. Still room for improvement in that department. After I tried my burrito however I have had my doubts erased. The flavors are all still there. The rice, refried beans, salsa, guacamole and pollo emborrachado were just as I remembered from my childhood. Everything was a beautiful combination of flavors and yet you could taste each item individually and it still had great flavor. I'm glad nothing has changed in the kitchen where it really counts. I suggest to people ordering to just tell them what you want and they will make it how you like. I will keep coming back for more. read more

Very close to NASA Research Moffett Field. Paid $4.99 for a regular burrito and can of soda. Drinks was Coke, they did not have any Pepsi in stock. I order food here often, more than once a week. Everything I've tried here has been great, but I usually get the mountain view special (burrito) and a couple of platters. I like the platters because they reheat well later. The food is very flavorful, I especially like the Pollo en Mole & Chili Colorado Beef. Refried beans, spanish rice. Try the fiery spicy salsa if you like hot smokey heat. YUM. I couldn't ask for more. They give you a really cheap deal, and a lot of food. And they keep the lines moving at lunch time. Solid burrito and go to place for lunch if you work near by. It's in strip mall with a couple other small lunch restaurant. I recommend the mountain view special with carne asada, diablo sauce, jalapeno peppers and grilled vegetables. This is one of the historic restaurants of Mountain View. I first went to Costeña back in 1982 when it was located at Old Middlefield & Regnstorff. There was a Dutch door at the back of the grocery store serving only rice and bean burritos. Over the next few years, they began to add stewed meats and mole. La Costeña was in its heyday from the late 80's through the early 2000s. The grocery store property was closed and they moved to the current location on E. Middlefield. The food quality is still very good and they will make any type of burrito you want. I've eaten every single one on the menu and over the years, I'll settle in with a Pollo Encebollado with grilled veggies. They always have a special for the day which is posted just outside the main entrance. It's a good deal if you are up for the type of burrito they're offering. It comes with a regular sized burrito with a free soda. Their online ordering isn't polished yet. There's certain combinations of burritos you can order in person, but you can't get it online. Love these guys and hope they continue to serve the Bay Area's best burritos for a long time to come. read more

Whhaaaaa I didn't get sour cream, whhaaaa they didn't greet me with a cheery smile...what the heck? Silicon Valley is ruined. Same people who are driving up our home prices because they don't know what a house is worth wouldn't know a good burrito it slapped them in the head (and I really want to get my smartphone out for that). These guys have been working this Taqueria as far as i can remember. About 6 years now. The taste is always incredible never misses a spice. You want mild you got mild. You ask for spicy, spicy is what you get. They have the best super nachos of your meat of choice. I personally like Carnitas and Azada. Ohh, they also have the best breakfast burritos!! Been coming here for the last couple of months for a post workout burrito for them gainz the guys there make a mean carne asada super burrito to satisfy any hunger level! So I came to this place because I was craving a quesadilla de Asada ( beef ) with a drink and my bill came to be 11.35 just for a quesadilla with meat and cheddar cheese witch is not typical Mexican quesadilla. New location is nice. Plenty of parking. It's in a little Shopping Center close to the Dollar Tree, Carls Jr. and next to a Liquor Store and "Subway". There are no more glass windows showing the meat and extras. So there is no more pointing out what you'd like. Regular customers can easily order, New customers will need some guidance. You just tell them what you want. Prices are still the same. We were told they were going to change it back to the windows in front set up. Looks like they quickly took over the space and are figuring out the best way to use it. It's just a Restaurant now, no more tiny grocery shop. (I'll miss the 2 for $1 Ice Pops) In addition to the easy parking, they also now have lots of seating! read more

I wanted to update my review after having been a customer here for quite some time now. As before, I am very happy with the food, but I have developed some frustrations with the place, and wanted to share, because this can be helpful to other patrons. Other reviewers talk about the new ordering system and how it is worse. I get it, and I agree with that, but the restaurant staff can also do a lot more with what they have right now to alleviate some of the frustrations: If you are familiar with the place, and know what you like chances are that you are going to order a burrito with a short list of items, all of which will be charged as extra. The food is great, but at the end of the day you are paying around 14$ for the burrito and a drink. I did not think about it too much until I realized that I can order a menu item burrito "With everything" for 7$ with change, and ask for a long list of items to be removed while paying almost 30% less. Well, why would I not switch to doing that? Here is the thing: there is a limit to how much "customization" you can reliably translate in a cashier - printed order - cook - another cook environment. As an engineer I am feeling a strong urge to write an algorithm for calculating this number, but my gut and experience tells me that it is around 4. Basically if you ask for any more than 4 extras or removals there is like a 70% chance that one of your requests will be omitted. Stay with me here, the number of items needed to be removed from my "with everything" order is more then 4, and the number of items I need to add to a basic order to be content with a 95% chance of success is less then 5. So here is my point: Each visit I am paying 20-25% more for my order because, ultimately, there is a flaw with a model. That frustrates me, I should not be paying extra for that, yet, I don't really have a choice. The simple and quick solution to the above problem is to create a short list of easily recognizable menu items as a base from which customers can start customizing. If you do that, most customers will just stick to that baseline, since they were not all that aware of the customization option to begin with. Forgo the extremes such as "with everything", and add items like "Alex special", also a couple of vegetarian options, and some other unique flavors (not random flavors, but tested ones). A quarter of your customer base will be happier (these are some of the people that give you bad reviews right now, but just some), while a big chunk of your customer base will be ecstatic because they never thought about leaving the rice out and adding onions. You cannot keep the same formula you used to have when the customer orders were prepared in real time as they were watching, so, unfortunately, if you keep the current layout, you have to make some changes. Realize that in your new location the name of the game is volume, not margins. There are hundreds of over educated gringos within a walking distance from you, and they are all occasionally tired of the healthy corporate cafeteria choices. You already got what we want, just give it consistently and at a fair price. Personally, I really want this place to succeed, it is a part of a Mountain View history, and, well, I like to see a small business kick ass. However, if the business owners want to consider to change things up drastically... well, I am not going to talk about that, this is way too long as it is. -1 star since my original review, I will continue to be a customer, just not as eager. read more

THIS PLACE IS LEGENDARY! I've been going to this place since they're original location back on Rengstorff back in the 90's. Don't let the Guiness World Book Record for longest burrito fool you. The quality over that quantity record will definitely hit the savory part of your mouth. Oh my God! Soooo good! My favorites is Carne Asada burritos, Chicken Mole burritos, or turning either of those into Super Nachos. I also love the Horchata and Jaimaica drinks. I do miss the old location where I could stand in front of the glass of ingredients and choose what I wanted. But the new location makes up for it by having nice seating now. By the way, I've been to a lot of burrito places up and down the West Coast. This place is worth the trek! read more

I visited the old location several times a year for at least a decade prior to the move, but this was the first time trying the new location. I read many of the critical early reviews and hoped that they would iron out the kinks and return to their former glory. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. We ordered two MV Specials (one grilled chicken, one mole) to minimize the chance of mix up with the ingredients, and while they were good sized, and tasted fine, we missed the "custom" approach of the old location. I know we could have customized here, but clearly with high risk of mix up. To Carmelita W. who so diligently reads and replies to many of the posts here, I have one suggestion: Listen to your customers. People don't criticize for the sake of criticizing. They point out issues because they genuinely loved what La Costena used to be and want to enjoy your food (and their experience) as much as they used to. With some layout changes, I think you could return to the old ordering system which would address a huge percentage of the problems. You might lose a table or two, but I was there at peak lunch hour on a Tuesday and the place was maybe 1/4 full. Clearly the problems with the ordering system are impacting your business. Please acknowledge the issue and find a creative solution to the layout constraints, because nobody wants to see La Constena fail. Great businesses quickly recognize when they have made a mistake and then immediately make the adjustments necessary to keep their customers happy and loyal. read more

This small Mexican restaurant has many different options for food. They also provide the sizes of each burrito so you know exactly what you are getting. Overall, the food here is very good and well priced. The only downsides are that parking during lunchtime can be difficult. But, other than that this restaurant is very good. read more

Good lunch spot if you're in the neighborhood or work in the area. I see mostly the tech workers coming here for lunch, including myself. They offer most Mexican food you'd expect from a Taqueria. Their burritos are huge and pretty cheap. Personally, I like to get their nachos. It's really loaded with everything, I can never finish it! I once watched a Diners Drive Ins and Dives episode where the chef was using this really old grill and he thought the grill added flavor to the food so he would never move. I tried a burrito at the new location. Sadly, it wasn't as good as the old location. I've had many, many, many La Costena carnitas burritos so I know how good these can be. This time the rice was a bit bland and the black beans weren't that soft. The carnitas weren't as flavorful as usual. The dive like charm is gone...perhaps some people may be happy with that, but the new place is just like many other burrito restaurants, though there is now parking. Hopefully, it's just a few start up fumbles and they will be back to their old self soon. read more
