Oh, hole-in-the-wall Mexican, you elusive dragon that I've been chasing my entire life. While I can appreciate the bougie Mexican places downtown and I don't turn up my nose at a Mexican chain like El Torito, my heart really beats for lowkey, independently owned taquerias where the employees don't say a single word to me and churn out some amazing tacos. All that and more is at La Costena. 3 tacos for 6 bucks? I guess I'm eating until I hate myself, thanks! I tried the pastor (alright, not a bright marinade but not bad at all), pollo adobado (mmmm), and carne asada (because im #basic sometimes and a carne asada taco is a true test of the carniceria that taquerias source from. this was bomb and you need it in your face immediately.) I plan on circling back here once a week until I've tried the whole menu, and have broken the employees into at least rolling their eyes at me in disdain. I've been going to La Costena since 1994, when it was located in the back of a Mexican corner market on Rengstorff/Old Middlefield in Mountain View. Sadly it has moved to a new location on Middlefield, and lost a bit of the charm that it used to have as a result, but the food seems just about the same, which is a definite positive. La Costena makes fantastic burritos at a very reasonable price. The seating is both too much and not enough; too much almost any time of the day except during the lunch rush, when it is difficult to find seating and the line can be quite long (although the food is made quickly enough that the line rarely takes longer than 10 minutes and you'll have your food 2 minutes after you order anyway). How much do I love La Costena? Well, I used to own a La Costena t-shirt way back when they made them. I used to have a buy-12-burritos-get-the-13th-one-free card when they used to do that. I almost attended their "world's largest burrito" event in 1995? 1996? but something "more important" at the time came up and I kick myself that I didn't go to La Costena instead. I used to eat there a couple of times per week (not as much anymore as I live further away now). But perhaps the greatest testament to my love of La Costena is that when I lived in China for nearly a year in 2001, I had a friend, before coming to visit me in Beijing, buy me a La Costena burrito and deep freeze it so that it could make it to me in China intact and ready to heat and eat. I am the only person in the world to have eaten a La Costena burrito in China, I am quite certain of that! read more

First time I went to the new location and they don't have the open selection bar anymore! I ordered the super nachos with carnitas,everything and a horchata. I was really disappointed. My cheese was not melted, it was like they forgot to add it and added it towards the end, same with the sour cream, I love sour cream, and they totally held out. The chips and carnitas had too much salt on them and no salsa was added liked I asked. I asked for some on the side and it had no flavor or spice to it so I was glad they forgot it on my order. I had heard about this place for months on end hearing rumors about how delicious it is. However, at the time, they were hidden in the back of a corner market and as far as I could tell it was just legend because no one could remember where it was. Finally, one fateful day, I ran into a coworker who was able to tell me and my lust for this place began. The burritos are massive! But that's not why I love them, they stuff the burritos with all kinds of deliciousness and it's hard to go wrong with what you choose, if it sounds good it is good. The pollo boracho(spelling?), delicious, I go back to this many times, and the mole burrito, also amazing. Meanwhile they've moved to a new bigger dedicated restaurant and the place has not lost it's flare. Still equally as good and fantastic for when you have those burrito cravings. read more

dont get fooled by the rates at the door, Everything inside is almost more than a proper restaurant, no service, food in paper plates, $8 for burritos/plates. Sour cream, salsa and chips are all paid. To top of it all food is bad, Spanish rice is not well cooked, hard and chewy, meat seems like out of fridge, salsa is below average, only plus was flavored warm tortilla. We ordered for a regular burrito $4.99 and asked him to make it like an open burrito bowl, he gave us burrito plate instead, charged extra for sour cream and handed a $18bill, will never go back. 2 blocks down there is taqueria la bamba, amazing food and service, how can a restaurant so close to it be so bad!! read more

After hearing about their amazing burrito, I was excited to taste it myself. Sadly I was vastly disappointed with my steak burrito and the al pastor taco I ordered. I have no problems with the price or the portions, but food should first and foremost be tasty. Everything from the rice and beans to the meats lacked flavor. It may be that I am used to home cooked Mexican food with more flavor, but the utter lack of something as simple as salt left me dumbfounded at how so many people can say that the food here is great. This place isn't as good as I remember it back a few years ago. I was working at a school in MY View . I loved when I would stop by and get myself a huge burrito with quac that is nice and chunky fresh. When I finally stopped by to see the new location it had a complete different feel. I was used to the hole in the wall little tiny spot with a line running outside. I still love their chile Colorado but the burritos don't seem as good. Like I said could be the fact it was such a dive before my expectations were lower but still friendly folks and yummy food. I can't believe this place is still in business with their cashier's uninterested and dismissive attitude. Every time I've been here the guy taking the order is unappreciative and unfriendly. This place is a local favorite with authentic Mexican food. I ordered a Nacho plate which comes with loads of cheese, salsa, pepper in large portion with many meat choices to choose from, and price is very reasonable considering that most restaurants in Mountain View are getting expensive due to Google Effect. I used to like this place a lot but I went to their new location and I must say it's the worst costumer service I've ever had. And the food wasn't worth the experience. First of all we got there at 9 pm. when the place closes at 10 pm. and maybe that's why they weren't in the best mood but if you're going to have a place open until 10 or take a shift that goes until 10 I think it's reasonable to expect costumers at 9. We weren't the only people going there to eat either. When looking at the menu it would be kind of confusing in some areas so we were asking the cashier questions about the types of burritos and what went on them. He seemed really rude and didn't give clear answers. I had ordered a chicken burrito with spanish rice, salsa, black beans and the extras which when I asked what the extras were he told us that it was the salsa, sour cream, and guacamole so I ordered this. However when I got home which was only about 15 minutes later not only was the burrito cold but they had put corn, lettuce, jalapenos, and olives in it which I did not ask for. So I was pretty disappointed. My boyfriend ordered a super burrito with spanish rice, refried beans, mild salsa, grilled chicken, lettuce and cheese. But when he started eating it he was also disappointed. There was hardly any salsa, there were lots of onions which he didn't order and there were bits of corn in it. While we were sitting at the tables waiting for our food, and by this time it was around 9 15 or 9 20, the cashier came out and started putting all the chairs up right next to us and kept giving looks like he wanted us to move. I think it's kind of rude to do that when there are people sitting at chairs still and it's not even closing time. besides us there were two other people there as well. Then when more people came in we could hear one of the cooks in the back complaining and saying "shit." While I understand they were probably not happy to have more costumers in the final hour of their shift, it looks bad to customers that are paying money for their food and makes them uncomfortable. It comes off as unprofessional. Over all if you're going to have a place open until 10 you shouldn't be planning to close up around 9 unless you're going to put a sign up on the door saying so. The food wasn't good, wasn't even warm and the service was bad. Tried going here twice since they moved but had bad experiences both times with the service so I won't be going again. read more

If you are in the mood for a quick bite, La Costena is a great Mexican restaurant. The crew is friendly and efficient and the dish i tried, a Chicken burrito bowl was delicious. The hot sauce was not too hot but savory. The meat was tender but well cooked and the black beans were great, too. The decor is bland but certainly not a consideration, if you want to get a quick delicious meal quickly. It fit into my plan to stay on the low carb diet. I am not sure that the delicious sauce would have a negative impact on it. It is a regular haunt for my fellow colleagues and me. read more

I randomly found this place while looking to grab lunch one weekend when I got pulled into work. I was actually looking for Roger's Deli, but turned into the wrong lot and saw this place. I've been missing good Mexican food from Los Angeles, so I checked it out. While definitely "good enough," it just didn't blow me away. I had the "Mountain View special" with a carne asada burrito, and got the horchata, which was pretty tasty. The burrito was good too, and arrived very quickly, which was nice. Their soda machine wasn't working, which meant no ice for my horchata, but it was pretty well chilled so it wasn't a huge deal. I'll be back since it's super close to work, pretty reasonably inexpensive, and fast. read more

I went there to get a quick burrito for lunch and I ordered MV Special burrito ( cheese with guacamole) got back to work and found out that there were no cheese and guacamole on my burrito of course they charged me for it, very disappointed! I came back later and informed the counter person that I got the burrito special and showed him my receipt but there were no cheese and guacamole. The counter person said "ohh really". Yes , I told him. The counter person did not seems to care if they made my burrito wrong and was charge extra for it. I usually go here every other week but since this episode, not going back. Tried the new location after many years away from the Bay Area. Service was friendly, prompt, and quick. I got carnitas and carne asada burritos. The carnitas burrito was everything I expected and remembered from years ago. Very tasty. The carne asada was good, although somewhat odd. It was labeled "beef" and was apparently made with a kind of ground beef. Yes, I know "carne asada" means grilled meat, and that's a very broad term, yet this wasn't like any carne asada I have eaten previously, nor did it resemble the carne asada pictured on the restaurant's website. Geese where do I begin with this one... by far the worst burrito / customer service I've experienced in a while. Let's start at the beginning, arrived to the location and it was completely dead (that should have been first red flag) all the employees were just standing around leaning agents the counters bighting their nail not okay. Now let's get to the reason I came in the first place the food. The food was absolutely disgusting! I ordered a simple burrito asada with guacamole nothing crazy no way you can get the wrong.... the meat was full of fatty tissue that wasn't cooked all the way, the guacamole was already turning black, and to top it off the meat was cold. I would have went back and asked for my money back but I live way too far to go back. Also not only did I have to pay for the burrito but I also had to pay for it when I got home after I ate it...
