Fantastic value, There are some Taquerias that make huge Burritos, but only a few can master the Super Burrito with huge flavor. The Meat to to rice and bean ratio is perfect in these Bad boys. I stopped in after a baseball game for a couple of tacos and ended with two super burritos for the road. They were amazing, the Hot salsa was just enough hot to balance the flavors. If you go to the restaurant to pick up food or dare-I-say dine in, your eyes will quickly fixate on the multiple flies hovering over the open foods and aguas fresca. Yes, the food tastes great, but seeing it prepared makes me really wonder what it is that I'm eating. La Costena on Middlefield and N. Whisman Drive is the 2nd generational taqueria that used to be housed in a Mexican supermarket on Rengstorff and Middlefield. The original taqueria ladies would make exemplary tasting Northern Mexicano styled wet or juicy burritos with love and affection just like how I pictures sus madres would en sus casas. The La Costena awards from the early '90s were for the original La Costena. The 2nd generational taqueria still carries much of the original flavors and tastes of the original taquerias perro the love and motherly affection wasn't there as compared to the original. The guys didn't greet me with much appreciation except as a customer but did deliver a tightly rolled and somewhat flavored burrito. The ingredients were not added evenly so that there was evenly packed tastes in each bite and they skimped on the salsa, nor did they provide a napkin or extra salsa on the side. I'm providing 3 stars instead of 2 because of my affinity with La Costena and the decor of the taqueria has improved but my customer satisfaction has definitely lowered from a 4/5 star rating at the original La Costena to now a 2/3 star rating. La Costena please find some taqueria ladies to put the original love and affection back into the home-style cooking of eating. read more

I was disappointed in this location, no more are the golden days of a million creative burrito toppings and the glass case to help you pick what you want in your burrito. Where is the pineapple?! Food was dry the first time and I didn't want to go back again. I gave them one more chance and the girl that takes the order was rude as hell again for no reason needed. I'm a nice person and I treat people the way I'd like to be treated. Anyways I get back to work and my food was disgusting. Ok, so this is more about the customer service. I don't want to go too much into it but they aren't very accommodating when they make a mistake. They made our burritos with the wrong meat, and when I brought them back, the guy at the register argued me that that's what I ordered, so he took the burritos back and had the kitchen make two new burritos, but they didn't have the added cheese and sour cream that we had paid for, which is another reason to lose a star. We were in the area, taking a stroll and stumbled onto this shopping center and this place. I wasn't super hungry so I got the chips and guacamole. It was cheap (a little over $2) and the guac was super good. I definitely finished my guac way before the chips. I needed more guac. My friend had an al pastor burrito. Hubby and I thought of giving this place a try since we liked the other burrito place (Southwest Grill) that used to be here before and also because we live close by, hence this could have been a nice find for us. But unfortunately we were very disappointed by our experience here. We went on a Sunday morning and there was no other customer there so we expected good service. We ordered breakfast burritos which were good but took a very long time to be served. And meanwhile we could see the people on the counter dancing to the tunes of the radio. While ordering we mentioned that we would like to have it there but they still served it togo and we had to tell them again that we will be having there. They just transferred the burritos in a plate and gave us. The salsa bar is not outside hence you cannot get the salsa of your choice. We asked the folks at the counter for salsa and he responded saying - its inside the burrito. I was shocked by that response. They also have an offer displayed outside saying free soda with the burrito but the folks at the counter did not give us that either. Needless to say, we will never be going here again. read more

I've always liked La Costena. I used to go to their old location for years and I kinda missed the grocery store ambiance. I also missed the fact that you can go down the row of food and have them customize your burrito however you liked it. That was the old La Costena and I missed that. WhenI first came here, I was a bit disappointed that the place looked cleaner and neater than before. Like I mentioned, I liked the old grocery store feel and this doesn't have it. On the plus side, the food is still good. My favorite was always the mole and they are still good. I think they have to simmer this all day so by the end of the day, it tastes really good. La Costeña is quickly becoming my favorite go-to neighborhood Mexican spot. I wouldn't necessarily come out of the way to go here, but it's convenient for me and I think the food is pretty good. The menu here is somewhat small and just written on a chalkboard above the counter. Burritos and tacos are the standard items, but they also have quesadillas and enchiladas. I've gone back and forth between getting the burrito or the quesadilla, although my roommate got the enchiladas last night and those looked good too! For vegetarians, they add a bunch of grilled peppers to your dish, rather than just omitting the meat, so I really appreciate that. Everything is also very customizable here - you choose your type of rice, beans, salsa, etc. The only warning I have is that unlike a lot of places, a "super" burrito does not have more ingredients, rather it is much longer than the regular burrito. There's a helpful little sign to the left of the menu that illustrates your size options. Don't order the super burrito for one person unless you want leftovers because it looks huge! One of the best spots in the Valley for a burrito! You are able to customize the burrito to your choice. Start with your meat and are able to add from a wide range of extras for a small fee. Price is also reasonable, you'll spend $7-10 on the burrito depending on how many extras you choose from. This beats the $10-12 bucks you'll spend elsewhere. The establishment used to be further up on Old Middlefield which had a "chipotle style" order process. The food was lined up behind a glass. They now look like your standard taqueria. I'm writing this review after finishing what may be my last burrito at La Costena. I have been a long term diehard supporter of this place for years, and have given them more than a fair share of my money in exchange for delicious burritos. Unfortunately everything has changed now that they have moved locations and are now located off middlefield across the street from a gas station. Their old location was what appeared to primarily be a small Hispanic food shop, with burritos being ordered in a back room only big enough to fit a few people ordering their food (they had never had inside seating). This is where the key change has taken place; and the new location they have turned in to a sit down place where you order you food and pay first BEFORE they make it. This has not only decreased the quality of my burrito but also drastically changed the burrito building experience. There is something liberating about being able to say "extra black beans please" as they create your meal and before you are asked for money. Instead, I know order and hope that they understood my order. On that note, it has been the same great group of workers making the food. I have nothing bad to say about them at all, but again their English isn't perfect, and you can no longer correct a mistake as it is happening. Short anecdote: my best friend is a vegan and on our first visit to their new location (he has also been a long term customer) they filled his super burrito with enough steak to feed a small army. This is a direct result of the language barrier. Needless to say he didn't find out until he began consuming said burrito. I also feel as if the price has somehow crept up during the move. I just finished my burrito and can of monster energy drink, but was incredibly unhappy to fork over $14 for this meal. The burrito itself (regular size) was $11. That is too much for a burrito. It appears they charged for small things like my choice of tortilla and the addition of cilantro. This is unacceptable to say the least. It is with a heavy heart that I will soon walk out the doors of what was once an incredible burrito building experience never to look back. My money will be spent at Chipotle, as they will allow me to chastise the person making my food for more rice and beans. read more

I like the burritos and the quesadillas here. The spiciness is just right. I ask for the hottest an when eating it I was like nah this ain't hot but it crept up on me. The place is very clean they even got this cool lil sink inside the seating area . They have a really nice outside seating area too. They gotta work on the communication a lil tho cuz I didn't order Spanish rice but its what I got. What do you get when you combine loud music with a language barrier? A mixed up order and a lot of repeating to get it right. We arrived near closing time and apparently the cleanup person had a goal to walk outta there right at closing time because the mop was going full steam ahead right under our feet. And I must say, there is nothing like eating your dinner with the fresh scent of ammonia in the air. Maybe the pot was getting near the bottom but the mole special had so little chicken it would qualify as a vegetarian dish. Not impressed. Cheap and filling! The basic regular burrito is super filling and comes with a drink for only around $5! Super simple with a wide variety of meats to choose from and many additional toppings that you can add. So far I've only tried the al pastor burrito here but I definitely want to try a bunch of other meats they have as well as the tacos! This past November, we were in the Bay Area, and despite valiant efforts, were unable to visit our beloved La Costena. However, we were in the Bay Area again in Decemebr for a much longer visit, so we were able to go their new location. The wife and I both agreed that the old storefront with the restaurant in the back had a special charm and uniqueness to it. It was fun to go to the counter there and see and choose all of the different condiments, which looked appetizing and/or new for you to try in front of you and point, ask, etc what you wanted to add to your burrito. The new places loses that charm. One now looks up at the menu board and chooses your ingredients and condiments. While the food is still really tasty, it is just missing that special charm. However, a plus of their new location is that the parking lot is huge compared to the tiny private lot or street parking at the old location. I ordered how my friend, Rich, many years ago, taught me. I asked for a "super dooper", which is on their menu as the "super" burrito. Basically they overlap two of those really large flour tortillas and fill that puppy up. In my younger days, I could easily devour the whole monstrous thing. Nowadays, I got through 2/3 of it, and saved the remains for a snack. A few folks eating or waiting at tables were chuckling when I walked by with my burrito half hanging out of its brown bag. I ordered a chile verde with all the fixings and man, was it good. We have yet to find a place in SoCal that comes close to La Costena. If my fellow Yelpers know of a place, please let me know! Something that was not on their on-line or printed menu but on their menu board at the counter was "lengua". I wished I had seen that option before I ordered my Chile Verde version. However, even with the additional items, the burrito was average at best. I got the chico (btw the super burrito is quite SUPER, 2 meal size+ super) burrito with no beans, rice and al pastor. That alone sounds like a bland burrito so I asked for cilantro, salsa, sour cream, and corn. Even so, it was just ok. The pastor wasn't dry, which was nice, but nothing else seemed to be seasoned very well or had much flavor. Without additional items, the burrito with rice, meat and just beans is very cheap- good value. It's a small little restaurant, so food came out quick- score! First time I came here, I didn't understand the menu. It seemed all too cryptic to me with a price for only beans and rice, meat price and the different burrito sizes. It wasn't that clear but I figured it out. Also, there isn't really a place for a line and I've seen people line up on both sides of the tables because they were confused. Get in the right since the cashier is on that side. The big pro about this place is that you can customize your burrito to what size, meats, fillings, beans and even rice. So many choices. Their food has good flavor and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. - Burritos are very tasty with whatever meat you decide to put in to it. The medium size is pretty big and can get someone full. Look out for the mountain view burrito because that has most of the toppings. I forgot the combo that had all of the toppings, that one is good too. 5 out of 5 - Quesdillas are smaller however still have the good flavor. The only problem is that if you get a meat that sits in juices, the juices will come out and make a puddle of liquid on your other slices of quesdilla on the plate. 4 out of 5 - Nachos are decently sized but its my least favorite thing here. 3 out of 5 I always come here whenever I want a quick lunch.
